HOWARD EMERY VAN DYKE
Howard E. Van Dyke, 79, died peacefully on November 24, 2004, in Port Townsend.
He was born January 29, 1925, in Wenatchee.
Howard and his twin brother, Harold, grew up in Orondo, Washington. The redheads were inseparable, and well known for their mischievous pranks.
Howard attended Wenatchee High School, graduated in 1943, and in the same year married
Doris Irene Shriner of Orondo. They were divorced in 1981.
Howard fulfilled his military service as private first class in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps from 1945 to 1947, and returned home to Wenatchee, settling in a home on Cherry Street.
Affectionately known as ``Howie, " he worked as a mechanic at North Central Chevrolet from 1951 to 1955. He became co-owner, then owner, of Midway Texaco Service on Wenatchee Avenue from 1955 to 1971, where he was known for his excellent ability to repair and maintain vehicles.
During that time, he pursued his many interests and hobbies. He built a boat in the family garage and joined the Lake Chelan Yacht Club, rising to the rank of Commodore in 1968.
Together with the Board of Directors, he helped establish the Yacht Club Villa land parcels that are being enjoyed by many Yacht Club members today.
He had an avid interest in woodworking and made his summer home at the Yacht Club, where he carved totem poles, street and entrance signs and donated them to the Villa.
Other interests included snowmobiling, square dancing, clogging and helping his many friends, acquaintances and family with their multiple mechanical difficulties.
After a brief retirement, he returned to work at the Chelan County Public Utility District from 1982 to 1993. In 1994, he retired permanently to his beloved home in the woods at the Yacht Club Villas.
Affected by a prolonged illness, Howard was moved to Port Townsend to be near his family in 2002.
Howard held memberships in the following organizations: Lake Chelan Yacht Club, Wenatchee BPOE, Apple Country Snowmobile Club, and Buds & Blossoms Square Dance Club.
Howard is survived by his two daughters and their husbands, Cheryl and Ed Merrill of Port Townsend and Annette and Mark Banton of Federal Way; his twin brother and his wife, Harold and Mary Van Dyke of East Wenatchee; and his sister and her husband, Frances and John Manicke, of Wenatchee.
Visitation will be held at Telford's Chapel of the Valley, East Wenatchee, on Tuesday, November 30, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Services will be held at 11 a.m.
Internment follows at Evergreen Memorial Park, East Wenatchee.

Myrtle Mae `Nonie' Scheppler
June 3, 1920 -- Nov. 22, 2004
Port Townsend resident Myrtle Mae ``Nonie" Scheppler died in Kah Tai Care Center of renal failure at age 84.
She was born in Morris, Minn., to Thomas Edmund and Emma Josie (Garberick) Spaulding.
She married
Herbert Milton Scheppler on July 16, 1943, in Marquette, Mich.
The Schepplers lived in several cities in California, Oregon and Washington due to Mrs. Scheppler's husband's employment.
In Oregon, she volunteered for residents of Tigard Care Center for 20 years.
Both she and her husband worked in the insurance industry.
As his health declined, they moved to Port Townsend 11 years ago. He died March 23, 1998.
Mrs. Scheppler had a passionate Christian faith, which she loved to share with others. She was a member of Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, attended Women's Bible Study, and enjoyed reading the Bible and Christian fiction.
Mrs. Scheppler is survived by daughter Barbara L. Capparelli of Park Ridge, Ill.; brother and sister-in-law Dr. Kent E. and Herma Spaulding of Tacoma; sister and brother-in-law Mary Rose and Elmer Stanton of Port Townsend; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, one grandchild preceded her in death.
Services: Wednesday, Dec. 1, noon, memorial in Church of the Redeemer, 45 Redeemer Way, Port Hadlock. The Rev. Don Pieper will officiate. A reception at the church will follow the service.
Private inurnment is in Laurel Grove cemetery. Kosec Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Paul `Joe' Jennings

Port Angeles resident Paul ``Joe" Jennings died of cancer at age 67.
He was born in Bowlegs, Okla., to Leonard Loyie and Katie Opal (Taber) Jennings and moved to California at age 5.
He married
Carol Anita Holman in Concord, Calif., on Nov. 7, 1958.
Mr. Jennings, who received a lifetime community college teaching certification from University of California, Berkeley, and worked as a welding instructor and inspector, was a member of Piledrivers Local No. 34 in Oakland, Calif., and the American Welding Society.
He moved to Port Angeles in 1999.
Mr. Jennings, who also was an Air Force veteran, enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping trips, and was proud to be a great-grandfather.
Survivors include his wife; son Mark Glenn Jennings, daughter and son-in-law Teri Jo and Morris Dikes, and brothers Bob Jennings and Gary Jennings, all of Antioch, Calif.; brothers Gene Jennings of Fall River, Calif., and Don Jennings of Sacramento, Calif.; sister and brother-in-law Barbara Sue and John Adams of New Orleans; one grandson and two great-grandchildren.

Terry S. Truckenmiller of Port Angeles died at age 52.
She was born in Santa Monica, Calif., to Marvin and Joyce (Kline) Lincoln.
She married
William B. Truckenmiller on Feb. 6, 1972.
Mrs. Truckenmiller lived in Port Angeles for the past 32 years.
In addition to attending Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Port Angeles and Joyce Bible Church, she was a member of Equis & Us Horse Club and enjoyed participating in 4-H with her children.
Survivors include her husband, son and daughter-in-law Travis and Christi Truckenmiller, and daughter Alesha Truckenmiller, all of Port Angeles; her parents of Wyoming; brother Randy Lincoln of Wyoming; sister Sherry Halsey of Wisconsin; and one grandson.
Services: Saturday, Nov. 27, 1 p.m., graveside service in Ocean View cemetery, 3127 W. 18th St., Port Angeles. Father Kurt Nagel and the Rev. Melvin Wilson will officiate.

Richard M. Buss died in his Sequim home at age 77.

Ronald Alan Crawford

Longtime Peninsula College Professor Ronald Alan Crawford died of cancer at age 68.
He was born in Seattle to Robert Wayne and Genevieve (Braillard) Crawford.
He earned his Master of Science degree in physics from Oregon State University in 1965.
Mr. Crawford, a member of the Peninsula College for 40 years, taught physics, geology, astronomy, oceanography, geography, hiking and mountaineering.
He married
Grace Elaine LaFerney in Port Angeles on Feb. 20, 1998.
He enjoyed hiking, mountaineering, flying, nature and writing.
Survivors include his wife; son Alan Raymond Crawford; stepson Nicholas Wayne LaFerney; daughters Kathleen Crawford and Holly Rowan Crawford; and three grandchildren.

FRED LEE MICHALSCHECK SR.
July 12, 1933 - Nov. 20, 2004
Sequim resident Fred Lee Michalscheck Sr. died at home of complications from pneumonia.
Fred was born to Raymond Lee and Muriel Jacobs Michalscheck in Port Angeles.
He married
Beverly Jean Steilacoom in Port Angeles on Sept. 3, 1955.
Fred's career was with the ITT Rayonier Pulp Mill. He spent 35 years with the company, retiring in 1988 as a recovery operator.
Fred loved any vehicle with two or four wheels! During his motorcycle hill climb days, he was one of a select few to conquer the old original Morse Creek Hill Climb.
He raced stock cars at the McDonnell Creek track, placing at the top many times and earning the nickname ``Madman Michalscheck" for his skill and daring.
He had many motorcycles over the years, but his favorite by far was his Harley-Davidson, always putting a big smile on his face.
His family life was of the utmost importance to him. He was a master family storyteller and was well known for his joke-telling. He always had a positive and upbeat attitude about life.
His passing leaves a big hole in the hearts of all his family, but we'll always be proud he was ours, and will be forever.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years; sister Sandy and brother-in-law, Nick Larson; daughter Cyndee and son-in-law Chuck Thompson of Atlanta, Georgia; son Fred Michalscheck Jr. of Port Angeles; daughter Shari Michalscheck of Montana; son Randy and daughter-in-law Holly Michalscheck of Port Angeles; six grandchildren, two great-grandsons and his dog, Rachel.
Graveside services: Wednesday, November 24, 2004, at 1 p.m. at Ocean View cemetery.
