Robert Lee Green
June 23, 1929 -- Nov. 29, 2004
Lifelong Port Angeles resident Robert Lee ``Bob" Green died at age 75 after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.
The son of William and Lillie (Davidson) Green graduated from Roosevelt High School in Port Angeles in 1947.
He earned a bachelor's degree from Central Washington State College in 1951.
Mr. Green served in the Army as a Russian language specialist on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, during the Korean War.
He married
Donna Suzanne Knudson in Port Angeles on March 5, 1955.
Mr. Green managed Knudson's Variety Store. He opened the 88 Cent Store on Frist Street in 1957 and operated it for more than 25 years. In 1987, he retired as a partner in the Forks Thrifty Mart.
In addition to being a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Port Angeles, Mr. Green was a founding board member of Northwestern National Bank as well as a member and past president of the Port Angeles Rotary Club.
He enjoyed traveling with his wife, hiking with his sons in Olympic National Park, fishing and hunting with buddies, snow skiing with family and friends, and playing golf at Peninsula Golf Club.
Mr. Green is survived by his wife; sons and daughters-in-law Todd and Carmen Green of Spokane and Colin and Joan Green of Harare, Zimbabwe; son Jeff Green and daughter-in-law Susan Green, both of Lake Stevens; sister and brother-in-law Mildred and Steve Rupert of St. Louis; sister Doris Skinner and sister-in-law Lillian Green, both of Port Angeles; and five grandchildren.
Services: Friday, Dec. 3, 1 p.m., memorial in First United Methodist Church. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Armenta Madelyn Merchant
Jan. 16, 1914 -- Nov. 22, 2004
Sequim resident Armenta Merchant died in Olympic Medical Center, Port Angeles, at age 90.
Born to Joseph L. and Olive Jane (Washburn) Elam in Frederick, Okla., she graduated from high school in Chattanooga, Okla., then graduated from Oklahoma Central University.
She married
John R. Merchant in Chattanooga, Okla., on April 7, 1939.
During World War II, Mrs. Merchant worked as a chemist in an aviation gasoline refinery. She also taught school for many years, and served as a church secretary.
After retirement, she and her husband moved to Sequim in 1971.
The couple enjoyed many years of travel throughout the United States and Canada, as well as boating and fishing, and hiking on the Olympic Peninsula. Her favorite hobby was gardening. In recent years she was an avid Mariners baseball fan.
Mrs. Merchant was preceded in death by her husband.
She is survived by a niece in Texas.
Services: Dec. 15, 1 p.m., memorial service in Sequim Presbyterian Church, 950 N. Fifth Ave. Cremation was by Olympic Cremation Association, Port Angeles.

Robert Sidney Brown
March 7, 1915 -- Nov. 24, 2004
Robert Sidney Brown died in Sequim at age 89.
He was born in Hood River, Ore., to Carmen and Nell (Wilson) Brown. From ages 3 to 12, he lived in Port Angeles.
After a time in Seattle, he returned to the Peninsula and graduated from Sequim High School in 1934.
Mr. Brown then attended Griffin and Murphy Business College in Seattle, where he was employed by Kiekefer Container Corp. for about three years, then was in marketing and sales for Campbell Soup Co. for another three years.
He married
Verna Lotzgesell in Sequim on April 6, 1940.
During World War II, he served in the Army Signal Corps in 1942-45.
Following the war, Mr. Brown worked for the Bank of Sequim, then as office manager of a co-op and, later, Frank Rhoda Studebaker, both in Ellensburg.
He then was office manager of another co-op, this time in Auburn.
After moving to Sequim about 1954, he owned and operated Brown's Town and Country Store until 1967, then worked at Brown's Outdoor Store in Port Angeles from 1969 until 1986, when he retired.
Mr. Brown, who spent five years on the Sequim School Board, was a member of the Amateur Radio Club of Sequim and Past Master of Masonic Lodge No. 213
He is survived by daughters Verona ``Ronnie" Rice of Edmonds, Sidne Cameron of Sequim and Laurel Gloor of Papaaloa, Hawaii; stepdaughter Mary Henderson Jones of Virginia; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Brown's wife died in February 1994. He also was preceded in death by brother Wilson W. Brown and sisters Lois Bergstrom and Berith McCormick.
Services: Private family services were held. Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel, Sequim, was in charge of arrangements.

Allen Braddock Dunham
May 19, 1923 -- Nov. 25, 2004
Allen Braddock Dunham, 81, died of cancer in Port Townsend.
He was born in Omaha, Neb., to Howard Craven and Jacy (Allen) Dunham.
During World War II, he served in the Navy in 1943-46 and saw duty in the Pacific.
He married
Lynne Nugent in Detroit in 1970.
As president of Friends of Fort Worden, Mr. Dunham saw the group's dream of opening a visitor information center and gift shop in the historical old guardhouse become a reality.
In addition to being a member of Friends of Fort Worden, he belonged to the Heritage Group and Port Townsend Yacht Club.
Mr. Dunham's survivors include his wife; son Craig Busch of West Seattle; and daughters Patsy Clarke and Karen Williams, both of Michigan, and Victoria Passalaqva of Arizona.

Sari Kathryn Hurley
Feb. 2, 1919 -- Nov. 24, 2004
Port Townsend resident Sari Kathryn Hurley died in Harrison Hospital, Bremerton, at age 85.
She was born in Bellingham to Joseph C. and Edith (Staton) Peeples.
She married
Jim D. Hurley in Bellingham on Dec. 31, 1937. He died May 18, 1988.
Mrs. Hurley is survived by her partner of 16 years, Al Seiber; foster son Bill Burlingame; daughters and sons-in-law Joan and Larry Riibe and Mary and John Corbett; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brother Jack Peeples.
Services: Rosary on Saturday, Dec. 4, at 12:40 p.m., immediately preceding memorial Mass in St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 1335 Blaine St., Port Townsend. The Rev. Gary Sumpter will celebrate.
Private burial will be in Fort Worden Military cemetery. Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge of arrangements.

Floyd Dale Kimball
July 22, 1928 -- Nov. 22, 2004
Floyd Dale Kimball died of cancer in Port Townsend. He was 76.
Mr. Kimball was born in Shirley, W.Va., to Harry Hadsel and Dollie Ethel (Sweiger) Kimball.
Mr. Kimball joined the Navy in 1945, and served on aircraft carriers in the Pacific. Discharged from the Navy in 1949, he joined the Coast Guard in 1950, came to Port Townsend and was assigned to the Point Wilson Light Station for one year before being placed in charge of the Marrowstone Point Light Station in 1952-53.
He lived in Port Townsend after then.
He married
Mirriel May Knight on Nov. 3, 1951, in Port Townsend.
He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Princeton Veterans. His hobbies included coin collecting and attending garage sales.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Kimball's survivors include sons and daughters-in-law Steven Dale and Rebecca (Brawner) Kimball of Federal Way and Daniel Duane and Victoria Kimball of Olympia; sister Bertha Oliva Gaskins of Weirton, W.Va.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by brother Darrel Duane Kimball.
Services: Graveside services were held Nov. 24 in Laurel Grove cemetery, Port Townsend, with Steven and Daniel Kimball officiating. Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, was in charge of arrangements.

Katheryn Myra Murphy
March 29, 1908 -- Nov. 27, 2004
Homemaker and Sequim resident Katheryn Myra Murphy died at age 96.
She was born in Clarksville, Ark., to Clarence Guy and Ora Ann (Friend) Webber.
She married
Marcus Daly Murphy in Revelstoke, British Columbia, on Oct. 2, 1929.
Mrs. Murphy is survived by son Gary E. Murphy of Sequim; daughter Joanne P. Meyer of Wickenburg, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Her husband and their sons, Richard G. and Micael D. Murphy, preceded her in death.
Services: Private graveside inurnment in Sequim View cemetery was arranged by Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel.
Randall Scott Petersen
April 13, 1969 -- Nov. 19, 2004
Former Sequim resident, Randall Scott Petersen of Kingman, Ariz., died at age 35 from injuries received when he was struck by a vehicle.
He was born in West Covina, Calif., to John K. and Judy D. (Beam) Petersen.
Mr. Petersen worked at landscaping in Phoenix before getting into drywall construction in Sequim and Kingman.
Mr. Petersen's survivors include fiancee Karen Andrew and her daughter, Haley, both of Kingman; sons Michael, Kristian and Marcus, all of Sequim; grandparents Ronald and Phyllis Beam, sister Tami Petersen, parents John K. Petersen, Judy Petersen and Pat Tenneson, all of Sequim; and brother Mike Petersen and his fiancee, Wendy Pearsall, both of Kingman, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by grandparents Jens K. and Anna Sofia Petersen.
Services: Memorial to be announced. Lietz-Fraze Funeral Home, Lake Havasu City, Ariz., is in charge of arrangements.
Donald Rand
March 28, 1917 -- Nov. 24, 2004
Sekiu resident Donald Rand died in Forks Community Hospital at age 87.
He was born in Margie, Minn., to Horace Wing and Laura (L'Herault) Rand, and moved to Port Angeles at age 13.
Because of the Great Depression, he left high school in his senior year to join the Civilian Conservation Corps and help his family financially.
After this, he ``rode the rods" throughout the nation in the company of farmers and their families who lost their homes during the Dust Bowl.
In Ketchikan, Alaska, Mr. Rand worked on a mink ranch, at a dairy, with fish traps and in logging.
He returned to Port Angeles to marry Claudine Powless on Dec. 6, 1940.
The couple lived in Clallam Bay and Forks in 1941-45, moving their home to Port Angeles when he entered the Army in 1945.
Mr. Rand worked at several logging camps and was the business agent of Local 390, International Woodworkers of America, during the 1950s.
He moved to Sekiu in 1954 and commuted to Port Angeles until his wife and son joined him on the West End in 1962.
Before retiring in 1978, he was employed for 24 years by Crown Zellerbach Logging Co. in Neah Bay.
Mr. Rand was a charter member of Port Angeles Free Methodist Church at age 16.
Among his other community activities were membership in Eagles Club, Alaska; president of Clallam County United Way in Port Angeles; and membership in Clallam Bay Senior Citizens, Children's Orthopedic Hospital Guild and the Writing Workshop in Clallam Bay.
Mr. Rand's hobbies included cutting wood, hiking, steelhead fishing, deer hunting, whale- and eagle-watching, and feeding birds from his kitchen window.
He also was an avid Seattle Mariners baseball fan and enjoyed football.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years; son and daughter-in-law Gerald and Carol Rand of Forks; daughter Sharon Rand of Bellevue; sister Beatrice Jacobs of Port Angeles; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brothers Julian, Albert, Sam, John, Art and Howard Rand; and sister Dorothy Miller-Henry.
Services: Saturday, Dec. 11, 1:30 p.m., memorial in Clallam Bay Presbyterian Church, Eighth Street at Highway 112. The Rev. Dan Ketchum will officiate.
A private graveside service will be held Wednesday, Dec. 1, in Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road, Port Angeles.
