Ralph Stanley `Skip' Knapp
Feb. 1, 1937 -- Nov. 30, 2004
Sequim resident Ralph Stanley ``Skip" Knapp died at his home of heart failure. He was 67.
He was born to Ralph and Fannie (Bucher) Knapp in Whitehouse, Ohio, where he graduated from Anthony Wayne High School.
He received a bachelor's degree from Bowling Green State University, Ohio.
He served in the Army from November 1960 to November 1962.
Mr. Knapp's work first took him to California, Wyoming and Alaska, where he was in charge of geodetic survey on a ship off the Alaskan coast.
He then was transferred to Pakistan, where he met and married
Grace Wallis.
The Knapps returned to Alaska, where they lived until a year ago when they moved to Sequim.
Mr. Knapp, a sports fan, enjoyed following the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Browns and the Bowling Green Falcons.
Survivors include his wife; son Christopher Knapp of Anchorage, Alaska; brother Richard Knapp of Perrysburg, Ohio; and sister Carol Roach of Waterville, Ohio.
Services: Saturday, Dec. 4, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. visitation at Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel, 108 W. Alder St.
The funeral at 3 p.m. will also be held in the chapel. A reception after the funeral will be held at the family residence, 541 America Blvd., Sequim.

Catherine Tolliver
Feb. 14, 1922 -- Nov. 25, 2004
Catherine Tolliver of Port Angeles died at age 82 from complications following surgery.
She was born to Anton and Rose (Schaaf) Glaser in Mandan, N.D.
She married
William C. Tolliver in Mandan on Nov. 25, 1942.
Mrs. Tolliver lived in Kennewick before moving to Port Angeles.
Mrs. Tolliver is survived by son Thomas Tolliver and daughter Billie Hanowell, both of Port Angeles; sister Carol Page of Bonny Lake; brother Raymond Glaser and sister Agnes Geise, both of Mandan, N.D.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Her husband died July 8, 1985.
Services: None. Cremains will be scattered. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

RICHARD G. GREENSIDE
Richard G. Greenside passed away on November 27, a few weeks short of his 87th birthday. He passed quietly in his sleep after a day spent with his sons and their families.
Richard was born December 20, 1917, in Spokane, Washington.
He attended school at Gonzaga Prep and Gonzaga University.
Proudly serving in the Army during World War II, he spent time in the Pacific and retired from active duty in 1946 as a First Lieutenant, Artillery.
After the war, he married
Trudy Woolsey of Spokane with whom he raised four sons.
He worked for Fuller O'Brien Corp. for all of his working life. The majority of his career was spent in sales and store management in Spokane and Wenatchee, Washington, and finally in Santa Barbara, California, where he retired in 1982.
An avid sportsman, he retired to Sequim in 1982 to spend his final years with friends and family enjoying the fishing and outdoors of the Pacific Northwest.
He was a devout Catholic and a lifetime member of the Elks Club.
His beloved wife of 42 years, Trudy, his brother, Charles, and sister, Jeanne Johnson, preceded Richard in death.
His memory is proudly sustained by his sister, Peggy Patrick, of Spokane and her family, his sons and their wives: John and Joann Greenside, Don and Toni Greenside, and Mike and Nora Greenside, all of California, and Mark and Cam Greenside of Nevada.
His legacy continues with his grandchildren, Natalie, Nick, Nate, Hayley, Trevor, Taylor and Victoria.
A special thanks to his nephew Bill and Esther Littlejohn of Sequim, who were of special help to Richard and his family during his years in Sequim. We would also like to express gratitude to Bob and the late Nan Littlejohn, Jane Ostermann, Jim and Alice Armstrong, and his other friends and neighbors for providing key support and friendship, especially during his final years in Sequim.
He requested no memorial service. Interment will be with Trudy at Sequim View cemetery.

Elizabeth Nellie Cutter Bass of Port Angeles died one day before her 94th birthday.

Dorothy Miller Dequine
June 30, 1913 -- Nov. 30, 2004
Dorothy Miller Dequine, 91, died in her Sequim home, in the company of her husband of 72 years and family members.
She was born in Schenectady, N.Y., to Bradford and Mary Elizabeth (Severson) Miller.
She married
Louis Edward Dequine Jr. in Madison, Wis., in 1932.
She earned her bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Wisconsin in 1934.
Mrs. Desquine, who worked as a physical therapist, journalist and teacher, lived in Sequim for two years.
In addition to being a world traveler, she starred in community theater and was an accomplished golfer.
Mrs. Dequine was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority and a Presbyterian Bible Study. She also volunteered with many service clubs and civic groups, including United Way, Red Cross and League of Women Voters.
Survivors include her husband; daughters Jennifer Eastburn of Sequim and Elizabeth Dequine of Bainbridge Island; son Louis Edward Dequine III of Oak Creek, Colo.; brother Dick Miller of Las Vegas; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brother Vance Miller.
Services: A memorial celebration of life at the family's ranch in Colorado is planned for August 2005.

Eugene Edward Engel Sr.
Oct. 6, 1926 -- Aug. 10, 2004
Former Port Angeles resident Eugene Edward Engel Sr. of Hollis, Alaska, died in Ketchikan, Alaska, at age 77.
He was born in Port Angeles to R.J.J. ``Rob" and Rosavilla Mae (Vitale) Engel and was a member of Mount Pleasant Grange.
Survivors include his sister, Meryl Burke, of Port Angeles.
Services: Saturday, Dec. 4, 11 a.m., graveside service in Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road. Coast Guardsman Dave Coburn will officiate.

Gregory Gene Horejesi, a resident of the Hoh Reservation, died in Forks at age 21.

Eugene C. `Bud' Reader

Sequim resident Eugene C. ``Bud" Reader died in Olympic Medical Center, Port Angeles, at age 84.

Walter B. Rommel
Nov. 3, 1912 -- Nov. 29, 2004
Port Angeles resident Walter B. Rommel died in Crestwood Convalescent Center at age 92.
He was born to George and Carrie Rommel in Pomeroy, where he grew up and received his formal education.
He enjoyed playing sports. As a young man, he played shortstop for the Bearded Beauties baseball team.
In 1941, Mr. Rommel moved to Walla Walla, where he worked for the highway department
He married
Hazel M. Hathaway on Nov. 4, 1945.
The Rommels moved to Port Angeles in 1962, and he worked at Swain's General Store until his retirement in 1973.
Mr. Rommel is survived by his daughter-in-law, Dolores Rommel, of Fountain Valley, Calif., and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife and his son, Bruce Rommel.
Services: At his request, none. Cremains will be buried in Mountain View cemetery, Walla Walla. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Jean M. Williamson
Jan. 12, 1919 -- Dec. 1, 2004
Jean M. Williamson, 85, died in her Port Angeles home after a long illness.
She was born to James A. and Daphna L. (Martin) Curry in Waverly, Iowa, where she attended Wartburg College.
She married
Robert E. Tompkins in Iowa in 1941; they divorced in 1967.
In 1977, she married
Edsel W. Williamson in Bellingham; he died in August 2003.
Mrs. Williamson, who retired from Pacific Northwest Bell Telephone Co. in 1978 with more than 30 years as a chief operator, lived in Bremerton and Bellingham before moving to Port Angeles 28 years ago.
She was a member of Telephone Pioneers of America, Peninsula Long Rifles, Soroptimist and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Williamson's survivors include sons Craig R. Tompkins of Bremerton and James A. Tompkins of Puyallup; stepsons Marc Williamson of Bainbridge and Chris Williamson of Coos Bay, Ore.; daughter Kathi J. Leary of Port Angeles; stepdaughters Maureen Anderson of Graham and Laurie Haubrich of Kingston; sister Helen Clary of Waverly, Iowa; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.
Services: Friday, Dec. 3, 1 p.m., memorial in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Charles Mays officiating. Private graveside service in Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road, Port Angeles.

GARY E. HAGEN
Gary E. Hagen, age 65, of Port Ludlow died November 26, 2004, at Harrison Hospital from Acute Leukemia.
Gary was born in Monroe, Michigan, on September 3, 1939, to Edwin Victor and Lenora Edith (Measel) Hagen.
Gary graduated from Monroe High School in 1957, Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in 1961 and went on to earn his Master's Degree from the Armed Forces Institute of Technology, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio, in 1972.
On September 23, 1961, Gary married
Judith Grace Wagner in Birmingham, Michigan.
Gary served in the U.S. Air Force for 25 years until his retirement as a Colonel in 1985.
After his retirement from the Air Force, Gary was a Business Administrator at Menlo Park Presbyterian Church in Menlo Park, Calif.
He was the President of the Timberton Home Owners Association, Treasurer and Board Member of Port Ludlow Community Church and enjoyed reading and spending time with family and friends. Gary truly was a leader, mentor and encourager of others.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Judith Grace, of Port Ludlow; father Edwin Victor of Fort Myers, Florida; daughter Lori Elizabeth Hagen and her partner, Karen McColloch; son Brett Edwin and his wife, Anneke, of Seattle, Washington; grandson Lukas Nathaniel Hagen; and his cousin Sandra Measel-Gorowski.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Lenora.
A memorial celebration will be held Monday, December 6, 2004, 1:30 p.m., at Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church, 11042 Sunrise Drive NE, Bainbridge Island, WA 98110.

CLIFFORD F. MILLER
Oct. 25, 1919-Nov. 30, 2004
Clifford F. Miller died November 30, 2004, at Port Angeles Care Center at the age of 85.
Born October 25, 1919, in Naples, Idaho, to Anton (Tony) and Eva Miller.
He began working for the railroad in his early teens, repairing and laying track. He held various positions on the railroad, advancing to fireman.
At the time World War II broke out, he was completing the requirements to be an engineer on steam locomotives.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on January 8, 1942, and attended Aerial Gunnery School at Tyndall Field, Florida. He was trained and served as an airplane engine repairman, and was certified by Curtiss-Wright to work on the Curtiss-Wright P40-E and P40-F.
As an Army Air Corps crew member, he served in Ghana and received the European African Middle Eastern Service medal.
Upon his return to civilian life in January 1946, he returned to railroad work and was promoted to engineer on steam engines before they were replaced by diesel locomotives.
He spent his 42-year railroad career working for the Spokane International Railroad, which became a wholly owned subsidiary of Union Pacific in 1959. He was one of the first engineers to operate Canadian Pacific locomotives.
During a hiatus from railroad engineering, Cliff owned and operated a gas station and grocery store, and then the Destiny Bay Resort on Kootenay Lake in British Columbia.
Cliff married
Barbara K. Allen on August 31, 1977, in Spokane, Washington.
Following his retirement, the couple moved to Sequim where Cliff built a new home.
Cliff was preceded in death by his brother, Bill Miller, and sisters Betty Morton, Meg Burroughs, Dottie Miller and Lucille Lindberg.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by several nieces and nephews.
A private family memorial will be held in Spokane at a later date. Cliff requested that his remains be scattered along the Moyie River.
KATHERYN MYRA MURPHY
March 29, 1908-Nov. 27, 2004
After a brief illness, Sequim resident Katheryn Myra Murphy passed away at the age of 96.
She was born March 29, 1908, in Clarksville, Arkansas, to Clarence Guy Webber and Ora Ann Friend.
The family moved to Mount Vernon, Washington, where Katheryn met her husband of 64 years: Marcus Daly Murphy. They were wed in Revelstoke, British Columbia, Canada, on October 2, 1929.
The family lived in Nanaimo, Canada; Mount Vernon; Beaverton, Oregon; Sequim; and San Diego, California, before returning to Sequim in 1995.
Katheryn was preceded in death by her husband, Marcus Daly Murphy, son Michael Murphy, sister Gladys Howell, and brothers Clarence and Ray Webber.
Katheryn is survived by her son, Richard G. Murphy of Williamsburg, Virginia, daughter Joanne P. Meyer of Wickenburg, Arizona, and son Gary E. Murphy of Sequim, Washington.
Katheryn is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
At Katheryn's request, there will be no services. Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Stephen Henry Blenk
Feb. 28, 1956 -- Nov. 24, 2004
Sequim resident Stephen Henry Blenk, 48, died of injuries received in a vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 101, west of Carlsborg.
He was born in Minneola, N.Y., to Henry Joseph and Helen Ann (Wozniak) Blenk.
A 1978 graduate of Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., he was a writer, master woodturner, educator and mentor.
Before moving to Sequim in 1982, Mr. Blenk lived in Long Island and Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and in the Seattle suburb of Burien.
He was known as a creative problem-solver who saw ways to make the people and the things in his world better.
He was an avid outdoorsman, whether serving as assistant scoutmaster of Boy Scouts of America Troop 1491 or fishing with a buddy. He always made time for family and community, working at the ongoing process of building their home and fostering a gifted program for Sequim schoolchildren.
He belonged to St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Sequim and to the American Association of Woodturners.
Mr. Blenk's 1978 marriage to Nanci Clark ended in divorce in 1984.
He married
Susan Ann Moss in January 1988 in St. Joseph's.
In addition to his wife, survivors are son Robert Henry Blenk and daughter Jenny Rose Blenk of Sequim; son Dain Stephenson Blenk, stationed at Hill Air Force Base, Utah; his mother of Aquebogue, N.Y.; brother and sister-in-law Michael and Diane Blenk of Youngstown, N.Y.; and sister and brother-in-law Marilyn and ``Mitch" Hungate of Lake Tapps.
He was preceded in death by his father; sister Barbara Ellen Karp; and grandparents Henry Sebastian Blenk, Barbara Ann Schmitt, Michael Wozniak and Mary Stadnik.
Services: Memorial held in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Sequim, on Nov. 29. The Rev. Thomas Beattie presided. Cremains were scattered at sea.
