DARLENE MAE HARRIS
Dec. 27, 1934-Dec. 28, 2004
Darlene Mae Harris died of respiratory failure at St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, Washington, surrounded by her family. She had just turned 70.
She was born to Melvin and Dorothy (Scott) Goode of Quilcene, Washington.
Darlene was born in Port Townsend and was a lifelong resident of Quilcene.
She attended and graduated from Quilcene High School.
Darlene married
Kenny Harris in Quilcene on June 29, 1951.
She worked as a bookkeeper for Buck Mountain Logging Company most of her career.
She was on the Port Townsend Bowling League with her girlfriends for many years. After retirement, Darlene loved to sing, listen to music, knit, crochet, bake goodies, garden, bird watch, work crossword puzzles, play cards and read.
She is survived by her husband, Kenny, of 54 years; son and daughter-in-law Mel and Lorna Harris of Olympia; daughter and son-in-law Cheryl and Manouel Piliaris of Olympia; daughter and son-in-law Pamela and Art Mack of Quilcene; sister and brother-in-law Nancy and Guy Beckwith of Fallbrook, California; seven grandchildren: Tony, Chris, and Andrew Harris; Jason and Athena Piliaris; Alexis and Kristian Mack; and two nieces and seven nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Melvin Goode, mother, Dorothy Goode; sister, MaryLou Rubert; and niece, Donna Harris.
Memorial service: Celebration of life will be held January 22, 2005, at 1 p.m. at Quilcene First Presbyterian Church, 294433 Highway 101, Quilcene. A potluck luncheon will follow the service.

Carrie Campbell died in Port Angeles at age 88.

Mary Moe
April 12, 1905 -- Jan. 3, 2005
Port Angeles resident Mary Moe died at age 99.
She was born in Colburg, Ore., to John L. and Mary E. (Spores) Renninger.
Mrs. Moe was affiliated with both the Rebekkah and Masonic lodges.
She is survived by son John Dale Miner of Eugene, Ore.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Ronald L. `Buzz' Nelson
Sept. 1, 1933 -- Jan. 3, 2005
Port Townsend resident Ronald L. ``Buzz" Nelson died of heart failure in Jefferson Healthcare hospital at age 71.
He was born in Hillsboro, Ore., to Fay Cecil and Virginia Fay (Bascomb) Nelson.
Mr. Nelson's 1953 marriage to Betty Boutwell in Macon, Ga.; and 1969 marriage to Beverly Hewitt in Lynnwood ended in divorce.
He served with the military police in the Air Force.
Mr. Nelson's survivors include son Mark Nelson of Shenandoah, Iowa; stepson Rick Hewitt of Kansas; daughters Lorraine Shupe of Dawson, Neb., and Virginia Purvis of Emporia, Kan.; stepdaughters Debbie and Lorrie Hewitt, both of Aberdeen, and Joan Hewitt of Mountlake Terrace; brothers and sisters-in-law James E. and Dottie Nelson of Brinnon, Vernon and Judy Hedrick of Mossyrock and Steven and Kathy Hedrick of Las Vegas; sisters Yvonne Fontes of Brinnon and Lavern Lister of Lynnwood; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brother Jerold Hedrick.

Edith Reavis

Edith Reavis died in Sequim at age 87.

Harry Edward Reed Jr.
May 14, 1944 -- Jan. 4, 2005
Carlsborg resident Harry Edward Reed Jr. died in Tukwila at age 60.
He was born in Seattle to Harry Edward and Lena Evelyn (Hutt) Reed, and moved to Sequim as a small child. He graduated from high school in 1962.
In 1965-67, he served in the Army, including duty in Germany with Co. E., 24th Engineers.
Mr. Reed, who retired as a carpenter, was former president of Carpenters Local 1303 and an assistant teacher of carpentry at Peninsula College.
He also was owner of Head 'n' Horn Taxidermy and a member of the National Taxidermist Association.
Mr. Reed, who was recognized numerous times in Boone and Crockett record books and the Washington Big Game Animals record book, belonged to the North American Hunting Club, National Rifle Association, Peninsula Long Rifles, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, National Wild Turkey Federation, and Olympic Peninsula Resource Advisory Committee.
His passion for outdoor activities included participating in construction of the Hood Canal Bridge and I-90 floating bridge across Lake Washington, as well as fishing and crabbing.
He also was vice president of Windjammer Gold Corp., with mining interests in Idaho.
Mr. Reed was a volunteer at the Sequim Food Bank, and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elks and Eagles.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law Jody and Donald Kirst of Sequim; daughter Jenny Reed of Sequim; brother Stanley Reed of Spanaway; and sisters Janet White of Belfair and Ann Reed of Sequim.
His parents died in 1991.
Services: Sunday, Jan. 9, 1:30 p.m., memorial at the Elks Lodge, 143 Port Williams Road, Sequim. Bonnie-Watson Parker Chapel of Burien was in charge of cremation.

Johanna Smith died in Forks at age 64.

THOMAS E. MAHAN
Thomas E. Mahan, 62, of Quilcene, died Thursday, Dec. 30, at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Born in Brookhaven, Miss. to Thomas and Dorothy (Hughes) Mahan, he grew up in Pascagoula, Miss., and served in the U.S. Air Force before moving to Seattle in 1965.
He met his wife, Jeanne, in Seattle and they married
in 1970. Two years later, they moved to the Olympic Peninsula and eventually settled in Quilcene.
Tom worked as a timber faller for most of his life and he loved the outdoors.
He spent considerable time with his family and raised a daughter and three sons, which he considered to be his greatest accomplishment.
Tom was truly one of a kind, a strong, charismatic, impulsive and sensitive man who felt he had a calling to help those who no one else wanted to help, and he touched the lives of hundreds of people.
Tom is survived by his wife of 34 years, Jeanne Mahan; his children Minqua Mahan and her husband, Kirill Berezov, John Mahan, Josh Mahan and his wife, Joni, Paul Mahan, and grandsons Eli Mahan and Mark Berezov.
Mother Dorothy Mott, sister Ann and Spencer Sublett, and brother Joey and Laura Mott also survive him.
A memorial service is scheduled for noon on Saturday, January 8, 2005, at the Quilcene First Presbyterian Church. Pastor Pat Love will officiate. A potluck reception follows the service.

TASCHIA MARIAN PLATEK DUNLAP
Taschia Marian Platek Dunlap died Tuesday, December 28, 2004, at home surrounded by her family.
She was born October 17, 1914, in Manchester, New Hampshire, the second of six children.
At the age of 18, she entered Plymouth Normal School, Plymouth, New Hampshire, graduating in 1936 with a teaching certificate in music. She taught in Lyme, New Hampshire, from 1936-1937 and in Hooksett, New Hampshire, from 1937-1941.
Taschia married
Joseph H. Dunlap Jr. on July 3, 1940, and as a military wife traveled all over the globe while raising four children. They lived in South Carolina, New Hampshire, Texas, Puerto Rico, Kentucky, Washington, California, Germany and Montana before retiring to Port Hadlock in 1966.
During their two assignments in Germany, Taschia was active in the Protestant Women of the Chapel organization, serving as President of the Southern Germany Conference and in 1965 as President of the Protestant Women of the Chapel for all of Europe.
In 1961 Taschia received a B.S. in Secondary Education from Montana State University, Bozeman, Montana. She received a master's in counseling from Seattle University in 1972.
Her teaching career included teaching in the Chimacum and Port Townsend school systems, the Diagnostic and Treatment Center for Boys and Girls, Fort Worden, Washington, and counseling at Port Townsend Senior High School until her retirement in 1979.
Taschia was active in the Guardian Ad Litem program, teaching parenting classes at the county jail, establishing and volunteering at Kid's Place, Delta Kappa Gamma, leading church retreats, and counseling for the Juvenile Diversion Program.
As a member of the Community United Methodist Church, Taschia served as lay speaker, representative to the annual conference, choir director and substitute organist.
She enjoyed participating in the Pacific Northwest Methodist Jubilate Choir, and with them performed in Australia, Poland, Estonia, New Zealand and Japan.
In 2000, Taschia was honored as Tri-Area Citizen of the Year.
Taschia's passion for volunteering and giving back to the world community was matched by her passion for travel.
In the last decade alone, she walked with the penguins of Antarctica, the iguanas of the Galapagos, the lemurs of Madagascar, and the impoverished of Guatemala. She sailed Egypt's Nile River and China's Yangtze River, and followed the footsteps of St. Paul through Greece and Turkey.
In October, Taschia's family gathered with her in a celebration of her 90 years of life, a meaningful time of sharing.
Taschia is survived by her daughter Christine and son-in-law Michael of Spokane, Washington, and their children Stephen, Jonathan and Catherine; her daughter, Brenda Anderson and son-in-law Allan of Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Calif., and children Gwendolyn and Christine; her son Joseph Dunlap of Spokane; her son Jack and his wife Kathy of Palmer, Alaska; and her great-grandchildren, Madeline and William Dodge.
Her brother, John Platek, and his wife, Priscilla, of Manchester, New Hampshire, and her sister, Christine Jillson, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, also survive.
A celebration of life memorial service will be held at the Community United Methodist Church on January 8, 2005, at 2 p.m.
