Russell O. Pundy

July 13, 1931 -- Feb. 19, 2005

Sequim resident Russell O. Pundy died of cancer at age 73.

He was born in Milwaukee, Wis., to Gustaf Jullian and Pearl Inez (DeSoto) Pundy.

He graduated from Wilson High School in St. Paul, Minn., in 1949.

He served with the Air Force in 1952-60 as a military policeman in Alaska.

Mr. Pundy married Marilyn Ruth Price in Watertown, S.D., on Aug. 4, 1967.

He worked as a conservation service representative for Puget Power, living in Mount Vernon, Bothell and Renton.

Mr. Pundy enjoyed dancing, music, playing the trumpet, ice hockey and skiing. He traveled around the country in his RV.

He was a Lutheran Church member and belonged to Escapee RV Club and K/M Resorts of America RV club.

Survivors include his wife of Sequim; sons David W. Nelson of Auburn and Eric W. Nelson of Seattle; daughter Karen R. Adams of Renton; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services: No services. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: Hospice of Clallam County, P.O. Box 2014, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Irene Bennefield-Nelson

July 13, 1919 -- Feb. 17, 2005

Port Townsend resident Irene Bennefield-Nelson died of pneumonia at Jefferson Healthcare hospital at age 85.

She was born in Canton, Texas, to William and Emily (Streckert) Bennefield, and graduated from high school in Terrell, Texas.

She married Billy Joe Nelson in Dallas on Dec. 2, 1950.

Mrs. Bennefield-Nelson retired from Cooper Airmotive in Dallas at age 62, then continued to live with her husband in the Dallas area until his death on Feb. 19, 1993.

She moved to Washington state in 1996 to be closer to her daughter and son in law, settling into an apartment in Port Townsend before entering Kah Tai Care Center.

Mrs. Bennefield-Nelson enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking and knitting. She was active in church activities and volunteer work.

She was a member of the International Aerospace Machinists Union in Texas.

She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Janice Marie and Charles Richard Osborn of Port Townsend; sister Pearl Reese; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by sister Izzabelle Stark.

Services: Private family ceremony was held.

Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: The family suggests donations in Mrs. Bennefield-Nelson's name to a favorite park or recreational facility.

Helga S. Lassus

Jan. 10, 1921 -- Feb. 18, 2005

Helga S. Lassus died in Port Angeles at age 84.

Drennan-Ford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ruby C. Masin

April 9, 1920 -- Feb. 18, 2005

Ruby C. Masin died of a stroke at Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles at the age of 84.

She was born in Elkhart, Kan. to Fred M. and Minerva (Kifer) Coultice.

She married J. E. Masin on July 17, 1940. They lived and farmed in Hooker, Okla., until his death in 1980.

She worked as a grocery store checker in Hooker for several years.

Mrs. Masin moved to Port Angeles in 1988 to be near her daughter.

Mrs. Masin enjoyed sewing, reading, and, after moving West, watching the ocean, a miracle for her after living for so many years on the Prairie.

She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, volunteering on many church activities, and worked in the Olympic Medical Center gift shop.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law Dorothy and Robert Schnieders of Port Angeles; and sisters Dorothy Gose and Barbara King, and brother Jimmy Coultice, all of Hutchinson, Kan.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by infant daughter Jo Ann and brother Stanley Coultice.

Services: Wednesday, Feb. 23, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., visitation at Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, 105 W. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

Graveside service at 1 p.m. at Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road.

Memorials: The family requests no flowers.

Clare J. Monroe

Feb. 18, 1919 -- Feb. 14, 2005

Sequim resident Clare J. Monroe died of congestive heart failure at age 85.

He was born in Salina, Utah, to James O. and Erma (Jensen) Monroe.

He married Ruth M. Meusel in Baltimore, Md., on July 2, 1943.

Mr. Monroe was an electrical engineer with RCA for more than 25 years before retiring in 1972.

He moved from Vista, Calif., to Sequim in 1986.

Mr. Monroe was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, son Michael J. Monroe, daughter Susan M. Wickes and four grandchildren.

Services: None. Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel is in charge.

Marshall `Sal' Salvaggio

April 2, 1919 -- Feb. 15, 2005

Marshall ``Sal" Salvaggio died in his Sequim home of congestive heart failure at age 85.

He was born in Rochester, N.Y., to Angelo and Rose (Pecora) Salvaggio.

He was on active duty with the Marine Corps in 1941-67 and retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Mr. Salvaggio saw duty at Iwo Jima, Korea and Thailand.

He earned his bachelor's degree in political science and spent two years in law at the Marine Corps Staff and Command Colleges.

Mr. Salvaggio sold real estate in San Diego before moving from La Mesa, Calif., to Sequim in 1991.

On the Peninsula, he tutored for the reading programs at Greywolf and Haller elementary schools in Sequim.

Mr. Salvaggio was a member of the Marine Corps League in Port Angeles and the Elks Lodge in Sequim. He also belonged to the Military Officers Association of America and was a former member of Rotary.

He married Norma Jean Burge on April 25, 1967, at Naval Station San Diego.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Salvaggio's survivors include stepdaughter Alexis E. Grone of Sequim and one granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by son James J. Salvaggio, sisters Lily Salvaggio and Grace DiSessa, and stepbrother Nick Gustina.

Services: None. Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

D. CHARLOTTE BRIDGES

Sept. 5, 1937-Jan. 30, 2005

D. Charlotte Bridges was born in Harrisonville, Missouri.

She graduated from La Junta High School in La Junta, Colorado, and University of Northern Colorado.

She married Kenneth Bridges in 1958.

Charlotte and husband Ken retired form the Highline School District in Burien, Washington, after 26 years of teaching. They moved to Sequim in 1993.

The mother of two sons, Clifford (deceased) and Kevin.

Husband Kenneth, son Kevin and granddaughters Annikka, Torri and Olivia, sister Sally and mother Frances survive Charlotte.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

JOSEPH EDGAR MELTON

Joseph Edgar Melton was born December 28, 1940, in Olean, Missouri, to Rayma (Luethen) and Clifford Melton.

The family moved to Port Angeles, where Joe attended grade school.

The family returned to Missouri when Joe was in the seventh grade. He finished school in Camdenton and started working for a surveyor.

Washington state called to him because, in Joe's words, ``it was in my blood and I wanted to get back to Port Angeles and good hunting and fishing."

He met Kathleen Spaulding in Forks and they married October 27, 1962.

Joe worked with the engineering crew, starting in the field and advancing to draftsman, for Rayonier at Beaver.

After four years, he took a job with Clallam County Engineering Department with a variety of responsibilities that prepared him for a lifetime of work with surveying, drafting, subdividing and all things dealing with land development.

He worked for Petersen and Clark and Northwestern Territories for almost 20 years. In 1992, he had the opportunity to buy into a title company, which became Clallam Title.

Joe loved life! He loved his family, his work, all the people he worked with, ending almost every encounter with ``luv ya."

He loved his community and donated endless hours for the Cancer Relay for Life, becoming a top fund-raiser for the cancer society. He was the Barbeque King and fed volunteers with a big smile.

He was a supporter of the Boys & Girls Club and was on many committees, and was named affiliate of the year many times by Port Angeles and Sequim Realtors.

His fishing trips were legendary, he never wanted to quit; he loved hunting, also. Alaska fishing trips were a regular necessity for him.

A highlight of Joe's life was playing Santa at Christmas, not just for his grandchildren but for all his business friends as well, even when Kathleen refused to be his elf after one season.

Surviving are his wife Kathleen, daughter Shellie and husband Robert Beaudette of Port Angeles; sons Eric and wife Angie of Jacksonville, Florida, and Garrett and wife Cindy of Clackamas, Oregon. His grandsons in Florida, Dylan and Spencer, his fishing buddy; and grandson Trenton; granddaughters Tiffany and Emily in Oregon; and grandsons Kury and Brody Springer of Port Angeles.

He is also survived by three brothers, Larry and wife Alfreda of Moses Lake, Michael of Raymond, and Doug and wife Pam of Colorado. Many nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles also survive.

He also has his chosen children, Jeff, Jay, and Gerald Petersen, Babs and Tony Barlow, Jo Lea Freeman, Jennifer Holcomb and Joe McFarland.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Cliff and Rayma Melton.

A celebration of life will be held on February 27, 2005, at the Elks Lodge in Port Angeles from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Port Angeles Food Bank, 402 S. Valley St., Port Angeles, WA 98362; or Hospice of Clallam County, 540 E. Eighth St., Port Angeles, WA 98362.
