Swanhild L. `Swanie' Miller
Aug. 20, 1918 -- Dec. 11, 2005
Port Hadlock homemaker Swanhild L. ``Swanie" Miller died of heart failure at age 87.
She was born in Milan, Minn., to George M. and Julia M. (Hanson) Feroe and moved to Kent at age 6.
She married Herbert H. Miller in Kent on April 12, 1941.
After retirement, the Millers moved to the Oak Bay area of Port Ludlow. Later she moved to Port Hadlock.
The Millers divorced in 1988.
Mrs. Miller, who enjoyed volunteer work as well as enjoying fishing, camping and crafts, was a member of Jefferson County Firefighters Auxiliary, Chimacum; Children's Hospital Auxiliary, Port Ludlow; and United Community Methodist Church.
She also was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, of which she served as local president as well as district president.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law Sharon and Hub Cottier of Port Ludlow, Pam and Gary Hollis of Auburn and Leann and Perry Miller of Calabasas, Calif.; seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Services: Saturday, Dec. 17, 1 p.m., memorial in United Community Methodist Church, 130 Church Lane, Port Hadlock. Inurnment at a later time will be in Hillcrest cemetery, Kent.
Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: Jefferson Home Health and Hospice, 834 Sheridan, Port Townsend, WA 98368; or charity of choice.

George E. Olson
April 24, 1920 -- Dec. 5, 2005
George E. Olson died in his Nordland home of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He was 85.
He was born to Edward and Helen Ruth (Stone) Olson in Brooklyn, N.Y.
After graduating from high school in New York, he moved to Long Beach, Calif., with his parents at age 18.
In 1941, he enlisted in the Coast Guard. Due to medical reasons, he was discharged in 1943.
He married Shirley Irene Barron on Nov. 3, 1945, in Long Beach, Calif.
Mr. Olson and his wife lived in Lakewood, Calif., where they raised their four children.
He retired in 1973 and moved to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, where he built a tavern. The Olsons came to Nordland in 1985.
Survivors include his wife; son and caregiver Kent Olsen; and daughter and son-in-law Leslee and Rob MacDonald.
Other survivors include daughter and son-in-law Donna and John Doney; daughter Debra Steinfort; brother-in-law Leonard Heim and sister-in-law Lois Heim.
Also surviving are seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services: At his request, there was cremation on Dec. 8. Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, was in charge of arrangements.
A celebration of life is pending.
Memorials: Jefferson Healthcare Hospice, 834 Sheridan St., Port Townsend, WA 98368.

Richard George Painter
Jan. 21, 1930 -- Dec. 3, 2005
Sequim resident Richard George Painter died in St. Clair Hospital, Lakewood, of pneumonia at age 75.
He was born in Waterbury, Conn., to George Henry and Mildred Ellen (Anderson) Painter.
He married Sharon Murray in Fairbanks, Alaska, on Feb. 6, 1955.
He was an Air Force fighter pilot who retired at the rank of colonel after serving from 1951 to 1978 in such diverse locations as Vietnam, Japan and throughout the United States, including Alaska.
In 1971-73, Col. Painter was commander of the 318th fighter interceptor squadron at McChord Air Force Base, Tacoma.
After retirement from the military, he worked for Hughes Aircraft and lived in Northridge, Calif.
In addition to maintaining membership in the Dungeness Golf Club and being a former member of the Sequim Bay Yacht Club, Col. Painter enjoyed fishing, shrimping and his three dogs.
Survivors include his wife; son John R. Painter of El Segundo, Calif.; daughter Susan E. Hill of Olympia; and two grandchildren.
Services: None. Olympic Cremation Association, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: Clallam County Humane Society, 2105 W. Highway 101, Port Angeles, WA 98363.

José Perales
March 9, 1963 -- Dec. 7, 2005
Port Townsend resident José Perales died in University Hospital, Seattle, of a rare lung disease. He was 42.
He was born in Mazatlán, Mexico, to Abel Perales Chavez and Juana Guitierrez de Perales and raised in Mexico.
After graduating from school in Mexico, he went on to receive technical training.
Mr. Perales moved to the United States in 1989, and worked as a waiter at El Serape Mexican Restaurant for 14 years.
He enjoyed music (including playing drums), tennis and reading, and was a member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church.
His first wife, the former Diane Smith, preceded him in death.
He married Olga Lilia Garzôn Palomera on March 9, 1999, in Mazatlán, Mexico.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Perales' survivors include son Jes^pks Humberto Perales of Port Townsend; daughter and son-in-law Jessica and Saul Diaz and daughter Elizabeth Perales, all of Madras, Ore.; daughters Erika Marie Perales and Lupita G. Perales and his parents, all of Port Townsend; brother Humberto Perales and brothers and sisters-in-law Enrique and Carmen Perales and Miguel and Claudia Perales, all of Mexico; sisters and brothers-in-law Guadalupe and Raymundo Olivas and Yolanda and Armando Perales, all of Mexico; sister Carmen Perales of Bremerton; and three grandchildren.
Services: The Rev. Abraham Cueva Partida celebrated Mass of Christian Burial on Dec. 12 at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, Port Townsend.
Burial was in St. Mary's cemetery with Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: Perales Family Memorial Fund, any Bank of America branch.

R. William `Bill' Bradford
Sept. 20, 1947 -- Dec. 8, 2005
R. William ``Bill" Bradford, founding publisher and editor of Liberty magazine, died at his Port Townsend home of cancer. He was 58.
Mr. Bradford was born to Raymond Frederick and Eleanor Mae (Ritter) Bradford in Detroit, Mich.
He was raised in Traverse City, Mich., and graduated from Grand Valley State College.
While a college student, he launched a coin and precious metals business that evolved into Liberty Coin Service, an enterprise he operated in Lansing, Mich., before selling it to move to Port Townsend in 1980.
While in high school, he read the works of Ayn Rand, and contacted what he called ``the libertarian virus" after reading a copy of the New Individualist Review, according to an account he wrote in Liberty in September 1992.
This led him to begin laying plans for the establishment of an intellectual journal which would, he said, explore libertarianism as a practical philosophy of both personal and political action.
In 1987, he launched Liberty and soon developed it into the leading independent voice of libertarian thought in the United States that it remains three decades later. He also contributed articles and reviews to other publications.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen, of Port Townsend; brother James C. Bradford of Bryan, Texas; and sisters Barbara J. Bradford of Port Ludlow and Tacy B. Tolosa of Lithuania.
Services: None. Kosec Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: Charity of choice.

Viola Fritz
March 14, 1917 -- Dec. 7, 2005
Viola Fritz died of cancer at Olympic Care and Rehabilitation Center. She was 88.
Mrs. Fritz was born to William and Bertha (Welk) Klein in Monticello, Minn. She married Harry H. Fritz on March 14, 1948, in Sequim.
When she was two years old, the family boarded a train in Minneapolis and moved to Anacortes, where she lived until her marriage.
She enjoyed caring for her husband and three daughters on their small farm outside Sequim.
Mrs. Fritz was a member of the Sequim Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include daughter Judy Cochran of Gig Harbor; daughters and sons-in-law Jerrietta and Ray Braun of Seattle, and Jeanette and Jeff Gault of Sequim; brother and sister-in-law Eldon ``Bud" and Geraldine Klein of Forks; sister and brother-in-law Janett and Jack Kiesser of Sequim; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Her husband died in 1990.
Services: Monday, Dec. 12, 11 a.m., funeral at Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Steve Devine officiating, followed by a graveside service in Sequim View cemetery.
Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: Assembly of God World Missions, 1445 N. Boonville Ave., Springfield, Mo. 65802, for R. Michael and Sharyl Langford, Account No. 222140 in memory of Viola Fritz.

Robert A. Johnson
April 27, 1940 -- Nov. 27, 2005
Former Peninsula resident Robert A. Johnson of Brady died in Suquamish of heart failure at age 65.
He was born in Lake Fork, Idaho, to George William and Lydia Sophia (Kantola) Johnson.
Mr. Johnson was a truck driver for Boise Cascade in Idaho during the 1960s, after which he worked as a mechanic in Forks. In the 1990s, he was a heavy-equipment mechanic in Alaska.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife, the former Cheryl Ann Butterfield; sons Robert Carey, Toby Johnson and Chad Johnson; sister Maxine Shelby; and nine grandchildren.
Services: Held Dec. 3 in First Baptist Church, Forks. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, was in charge of arrangements.

ROBERT `BOB' JOHNSON
Bob Johnson passed from our midst recently. He moved on to that great fishing hole in the sky on November 27, 2005, while caring for his father-in-law in Suquamish, Washington.
Bob was born and raised in McCall, Idaho, where he first worked in the logging industry as a truck driver and mechanic. He spent a good portion of his life working and raising a family in Forks, Washington.
In later years, Bob lived and worked in Alaska before settling in Brady, Washington.
Bob was loved by many and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He had a quick wit, a big heart and a wonderful sense of humor. Bob loved to hunt and fish, and really enjoyed puttering in his wood shop.
He spent most of his life doing for others, and in 65 years asked only for honesty and time with family and friends.
Bob is survived by his sister, Maxine Shelby; his wife, Cheryl Johnson; and three sons, Carey, Toby and Chad Johnson. He is also survived by two stepchildren, Melanie Gimlin and Josh Christie, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and grandkids.
You will be missed Grandpa, Dad, Husband and Friend.
Memorial donations may be made to Forks Timber Museum, P.O. Box 873, Forks, WA 98331.
