Karen S. O'Neill
May 25, 1946 -- Jan. 11, 2006
Port Angeles resident Karen S. O'Neill died of cancer in Crestwood Convalescent Center, Port Angeles. She was 59.
She was born in Brady, Texas, to Col. Leland Oscar and Dorothy Gibson (Weiner) Krug.
She graduated from Alfred State Technical College, which is affiliated with State University of New York.
She was an executive secretary for the Department of Energy in Las Vegas, executive secretary for Farmers Insurance in Bellevue, and a Microsoft temporary agent in Issaquah.
She was a member of the Northwest Florists Association and worked in a flower shop in Issaquah.
In addition to being a Certified Professional Secretary since 1987, she was a member-at-large of the Association for Office Professionals, chapter 39000.
Mrs. O'Neill, who joined the Mountaineers in 1995, also belonged to the Museum of Flight in Seattle St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Sequim.
Married and divorced, she is survived by son Dennis Leland O'Neill of Port Angeles and stepson Michael James O'Neill of Houston.
Other survivors include stepdaughters Colleen O'Neill Slade of Fort Rucker, Ala.; Marilyn O'Neill of Salisbury, Md.; and Jenny O'Neill Goertimiller of Trappe, Md.
Her brother, Lan Krug died Oct. 5, 2005, also of cancer.
Services: Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2 p.m., memorial in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim. The Rev. Robert Rhoads of St. Luke's and Pastor Scott of Sequim Community Church will co-officiate. A coffee and cookie fellowship will follow the service.

Saundra Jean Blackmore
Sept. 9, 1935 -- Jan. 12, 2006
Saundra Jean Blackmore died in her Brinnon home of lung cancer. She was 70.
Born in Sioux City, Iowa, to Lawrence and Hazel (Herst) LaFleur, she grew up in Wilmington, Calif.
She married
Calvin M. Blackmore Jr. in Las Vegas on July 3, 1967.
Mrs. Blackmore moved to Alaska in 1976, living at Wolverine Lake and working at an art gallery in Wasilla.
In 1990, she retired to Washington state.
Mrs. Blackmore enjoyed gardening, cooking and sewing.
Survivors include her husband; sons and daughters-in-law Calvin L. and Jodi Blackmore of Seabeck and Rick and Danna Newman of Redding, Calif.; son Carl Newman of Wisconsin; daughters Marla Blackmore of Vancouver, Wash., and Cheree Newman of Wasilla, Alaska; brother-in-law Phill LaFleur of Connecticut; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by sister Donna LaFleur.

Daniel Robert Edgington
Dec. 3, 1981 -- Jan. 1, 2006
Former Port Angeles resident Daniel Robert Edgington was found dead in his dormitory at Yokota Air Base, Japan, where he held the rank of senior airman in the Air Force. He was 24.
An investigation into the cause of his death is ongoing, Capt. David Westover, a 374th Airlift Wing spokesman, told Stars and Stripes.
He was born in Port Angeles to Robert Donald and Sharon Kay (McNally) Edgington.
He graduated from Port Angeles High School in June 2000 and earned an associate degree in liberal arts from Western Washington University, Bellingham, in 2002.
He joined the Air Force in December 2002, underwent basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, and took advanced training at Sheppard Air Force Base, also in Texas.
His next duty station was at Scott Air Force Base, Ill., for additional training before assignment in Japan, where he was a laboratory technician for the 374th Medical Support Squadron.
Senior Airman Edgington was recognized as Airman of the Quarter in 2004.
He had obtained a line number for promotion to staff sergeant at his first testing in December 2005.
Senior Airman Edgington's survivors include his father, Robert; mother and stepfather Sharon and Russ Cordery; brother Jason M. Edgington; and grandparents Jennie C. McNally and Harold and Denise Edgington.
Also surviving are stepbrothers Shawn and Pat Cordery and stepsister Megan Cordery.
Services: Sunday, Jan. 22, graveside service in Ocean View cemetery, 3127 W. 18th St., Port Angeles. Jim Lierly, a family friend, will officiate.
Celebration of life will follow at his father's home, 706 S. Cedar St., Port Angeles.
A memorial service was held in Yokota Air Base Chapel on Jan. 9.
Dorothy Marie Martin
Jan. 18, 1918 -- Jan. 16, 2006
Port Angeles resident Dorothy Marie Martin, who had Alzheimer's disease, died quietly surrounded by her daughters at age 87.
She was born in Winifred, Mont., the daughter of Christine Wilcox of Denmark.
She married
James W. Martin on March 20, 1941.
The Martins lived at Grays Harbor before moving to Main's Logging Camp at Lake Ozette in 1954. They relocated to Clallam Bay about 1957 and to Port Angeles in 1966.
A homemaker who loved her gardens and pets, she also enjoyed the mountains that surround Port Angeles.
Mrs. Martin's survivors include daughters Penny (Walt) Stephens of Port Angeles, Lindy Johnson of Bellevue, Kathleen Baughman of Enid, Okla., and Diana (Kirk) Vance of Sequim; sister June Wilcox and brother Howard, both of Salem, Ore.; brothers Earnie of Ocean Shores and Chuck; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by sisters Willa Dell Miller and Eleanor Headland.
Services: Friday, Jan. 20, 10 a.m., memorial at Independent Bible Church, 116 E. Ahlvers Road, Port Angeles. The Rev. Dr. Mike Jones will officiate. A reception in the church will follow.
Burial will be in Ocean View cemetery, 3127 W. 18th St., Port Angeles.

Cecil Monroe `Bud' Fralick
Oct. 20, 1918 -- Jan. 3, 2006
World War II veteran Cecil Monroe ``Bud" Fralick died of cancer in his Port Angeles home. He was 87.
Born in Baineville, Mont., to Frank Newton and Marie Elma (Ratledge) Fralick, he completed high school then enlisted in the Navy, where he received additional vocational schooling.
Mr. Fralick retired from active duty in 1959 as a chief petty officer. He had served in California, Hawaii and Alaska, and aboard the USS Yorktown and USS Bon Homme Richard.
After his Navy career, he devoted his time to public service and private business support in Sunnyvale, Calif.
He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association and Independent Bible Church.
In addition to his wife, the former Reba Pauline Pearce, Mr. Fralick's survivors include daughter and son-in-law Sandra and Dick Whitten of Sparks, Nev.; sisters Janet Fralick, Ella Fralick and Edith Fralick; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services: Tuesday, Jan. 10, 1 p.m., memorial in Independent Bible Church, 116 E. Ahlvers Road, Port Angeles. The Rev. Michael Jones and Anthony Sackor will officiate.
A reception will be held in the church following the service. His ashes will be scattered at sea by the Coast Guard.

Norma Jean Hazel
July 15, 1934 -- Jan. 3, 2006
Sequim homemaker Norma Jean Hazel died in Olympic Medical Center of natural causes at age 71.
She was born in Corning, Iowa, to Ralph and Lenora (Hendrickson) Stewart.
She married
Robert M. Hazel in Reno, Nev., on Sept. 17, 1954. He died July 17, 1998.
She lived in Sequim for 20 years and was a longtime volunteer with the American Red Cross.
Mrs. Hazel was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
Survivors include son Robert M. Hazel Jr. of Issaquah; daughter and son-in-law Lou Anne and Tracy P. Harnby of Beaumont, Calif.; sister Betty Hartley of Salem, Ore.; and two grandchildren.
Services: Saturday, Jan. 7, 10 a.m., funeral Mass in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 121 E. Maple St., Sequim. The Rev. Thomas W. Beattie will preside.
Burial will follow in Dungeness cemetery. Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Marie W. Jakeway
June 6, 1918 -- Jan. 1, 2006
Former Peninsula resident Marie W. Jakeway, 87, died in Klamath Falls, Ore., of age-related causes.
She was born in Anaheim, Calif., to Rudolph and Rachel (Ellermeier) Schippmann.
She married
Alvin Jakeway in Chowchilla, Calif., on Aug. 26, 1933.
Mrs. Jakeway owned a dairy in Quilcene from 1950 until 2001.
In addition to enjoying crochet and embroidery work, she was a member of the Grandmothers Club and Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Her survivors include sons and daughters-in-law Chuck and Jan Jakeway of Klamath Falls, Ore., and Raymond and Charlyne Jakeway of Krum, Texas; daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth and Bruce Hastings of Puyallup; brother and sister-in-law Fred and Audrey Schippmann of California and Doug and Nancy Schippmann of Boring, Ore.; sister and brother-in-law Bonnie and Jim Metcalf of Milton-Freewater, Ore.; sister Willa Bruce of Escondido, Calif.; three grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Her husband preceded her in death in 2001.
Services: Today, Jan. 6, memorial in Eternal Hills Chapel, Klamath Falls, Ore. Tim Herzfeldt-Kamprath will officiate.
Burial will be in San Pasqual cemetery, Escondido, Calif.

William Donald Sump
March 6, 1940 -- Dec. 27, 2005
Sequim resident William Donald Sump died of pneumonia in Port Townsend. He was 65.
Born in Billings, Mont., to Donald Frederick and Evelyn Leah (Hazelton) Sump, he lived as a small child in the World War II detention camp at which his father was employed in Hart Mountain, Wyo.
As a youth, he became an Eagle Scout and graduated from Sheridan (Wyo.) High School in 1958.
He graduated in 1964 from Sheridan Junior College and later from the College of Engineering at University of Wyoming.
While a member of the Wyoming National Guard, he was involved in competitive shooting at Camp Perry, Ohio, and attended officer candidate school.
While working at Yellowstone National Park, he met Elizabeth Louise Kraemer, whom he married
in Guttenberg, Iowa, on June 14, 1964.
Mr. Sump, who was employed by Boeing for 31 years as a research engineer in the stress lab and field service customer support engineer, retired in 1995 to Sequim.
He enjoyed traveling with his family, competitive shooting (at which he became a master), membership in the Sequim RC Aeronauts, building and flying radio-controlled airplanes (including a model B-17G with 103-inch wingspan made from his own plans), and raising tropical fish and koi.
Mr. Sump belonged to Dungeness Valley Lutheran Church.
In addition to his wife, survivors include son and daughter-in-law Matt and Cindy Sump of Sumner; brother and sister-in-law John and Charleen Sump of Spanish Fork, Utah; sister and brother-in-law Marian and Al Smith of Lewiston-Clarkston; and one granddaughter.
Grandson Jeremy Nathaniel Sump died in 1999.
