KATHERINE ROSE ALLEN
Katherine Rose Allen, 94, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2006, in Bonney Lake, Washington.
``Grandma Kay's" final months were under the loving care of her granddaughter and husband, Janet and Chris Dahl, in their Bonney Lake home.
Katherine's parents, Frank and Mary Ann Maissen, immigrated from Switzerland early in the 20th century. Katherine was born on March 13, 1911, in Kirkland, Washington.
Soon after that, her father, Frank, died suddenly. According to Swiss custom at the time, Frank's brother, John, was obligated to marry the widow and bring up her three children. John lovingly accepted that obligation, and together they had nine more children.
Soon after the loss of her father, the family moved to Yakima, where Katherine attended St. Joseph's Academy. During the hard times of the Depression, Katherine helped the family finances by working in hop fields, and was a longtime employee of the Gibson Meat Packing plant in Yakima.
In 1942, Katherine married
Robert Allen, who at the time was serving in the U.S. Navy. After the war, Katherine and her husband bought a fishing boat and spent several years fishing the Alaskan waters around Kodiak Island. Katherine served as a cook on the vessel.
When her husband began crab fishing in the Bering Sea, she retired from the seafaring life and opened a motel in Port Angeles.
Katherine loved to travel. While Bob was in Alaska, Katherine became a world traveler, visiting her relatives in Switzerland and eventually touring most of the countries in Europe on her own.
After Bob's retirement, they traveled to Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean, Mexico and South America.
In addition to traveling, Katherine was an avid gardener, winning citywide recognition for her beautiful yard in Port Angeles.
Katherine is survived by her daughter, Margaret Cunningham House (Lorne) of Yakima; seven grandchildren, Dan Cunningham (Carol) of Sunnyside; Karen Pruitt (Ronnie) of Selah; Janet Dahl (Chris) of Bonney Lake; Christine Jacobsen (Frank) of Buckley; David Cunningham (Vicki) of Yakima; Shannon Webster (Duane) of Yakima; Cathy Blore (Mark) of Selah; 16 great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is also survived by a brother, Charles Maissen (Isabel), of Yakima, and three sisters, Frances (Bob) Mitchell of California; Monica Hackett of Yakima and Helen Woodworth of Yakima.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; father Frank Maissen; stepfather John Maissen; mother Mary Ann Maissen; sister Mary Ann Searles; and brothers Louie, Joe and Jake Maissen. Several of her siblings were lost in infancy.
Grandma Kay was a lively, generous and beautiful lady. Despite many years of illness, she maintained her sense of humor and zest for living. She was like a playful sister to her daughter and grandchildren -- they never knew what to expect.
All of her family and many friends will miss her. She will be forever in our hearts.
At Katherine's request, there will be no service. A Celebration of Her Life will be held at The Morning Star Church (formerly Masonic Center) in the upstairs annex, Yakima, Washington, on Saturday, January 21, 2006, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Burial will be March 13, 2006 at Calvary cemetery.
