MARIA SEMOTIUK VAUGHAN CATHCART
1927-2006
Maria was born in the USSR on February 15, 1927, to John and Kathryn Semotiuk.
She has one sister, Annie Nociar, of Langley, British Columbia.
Her father immigrated to Canada in 1919, and soon became the proud owner of a large farm. A coal stove warmed them, cows and chickens fed them, man and machinery harvested crops, and life was good.
At the tender age of 18, Maria was walking in the rain in Vancouver, British Columbia, when a sailor approached her and asked to share her umbrella. He asked her if she liked chicken; when she said yes, he asked, ``How about a wing?" and held out his arm to her.
Thus began a marital union that lasted over 25 years, when on May 4, 1969, Denver Ward Vaughan died of cancer.
Together they gave life to Devin Vaughan of Port Angeles and Garland Vaughan of Port Angeles; also Darlene Jewel Vaughan, who died at age 5 in 1955.
Maria remarried in 1970 to Thomas Cathcart. He passed away in 1989.
Maria was a fantastic cook. Through the years this gift was appreciated at a logging camp in Alaska, a landmark hotel in Forks, a roadside eatery near her home on the Bogachiel, and at her own dining room table.
Cabbage rolls, fried corn, date squares, cornbread and beans, chocolate gravy and biscuits, maple bars, and her beloved Ukrainian specialties made every meal a banquet.
Maria designed jewelry, loved to travel and enjoyed gardening. She loved reading and studying the Bible, and constantly kept notes about what she learned. It inspired her to talk to anyone she met about this oldest of books.
During her illness, she spoke of how her God Jehovah was helping her to endure, and of His promise of resurrection back to this earth under paradise conditions. This she awaits.
A memorial for her will be given by Jim Petrie at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses at 1714 S. N St., Port Angeles, on Saturday, January 28, 2006, at 2 p.m.
