Dana Bruce Mower
1956 — 2012
Dana died doing what he loved the most, skiing a black diamond mogul run after a fresh snow fall of 36 inches on a gloriously sunny day in Sun Valley, Idaho.
One of his last phone calls, of course from the ski hill, was “It’s just perfect, just perfect.” Dana had an enlarged heart which led to a heart attack on the Christmas Lift Chair on Mount Baldy. He was skiing alone, knowing how sweet it was to catch the last run of the day. The quiet. The joy. The connection he felt to the God that Dana knew.
Dana grew up in Tacoma, Wash., on Wapato Lake, with four siblings and parents who raised him to believe in himself and encouraged his independent spirit, which later led to Dana’s successful career as a real estate entrepreneur. Dana graduated with a degree in civil engineering from the University of Washington, and in 1995 started DBM Consulting Engineers.
Dana’s visionary sight and focus brought him remarkable success with real estate investment. From 1999 to 2003 Dana developed Landis Point and Hazel Gardens apartment projects, as well as the 2003 Street of Dreams.
From 2004 to 2007 Dana parlayed his previous successes into Riversand, a 40-acre residential development project in Auburn, Wash. This project exemplifies one of Dana’s strongest attributes, which was to convert a property with entitlement difficulties into a developable piece of land.
In 2005, Dana refitted his dream boat, The Christina, a 120-foot yacht; he was looking forward to exploring the blue-sky waters of the Caribbean. In 2007, Dana realized his dreams in purchasing Lynyard Cay, a 77-acre island in the Bahamas, where he planned a multi-use luxury community.
Dana loved hiking the Sawtooth Mountains in North Central Idaho and walking the downed, yellowed maple leaves in October. He loved crabbing off of Sunset Point and piloting his boat through all weather in the San Juan Islands.
Dana loved golf, skiing, and most especially the miracle of flight — to look upon the world from his cockpit 3, 000 feet up, and to watch the earth fall away and the heavens open. Dana lived with passion and dignity and invention. His soul ran deep. Dana left this world with no fear.
Dana leaves behind his mother, Lois Mower, and his siblings, Larry Mower, Greg Mower, Linda Turner, and Scott Mower. And Dana leaves behind Christine Leiren Mower, the love of his life for 37 years.
A memorial will be held at Neighborhood Church, 2802 Bridgeport Way W, University Place, WA 98466, on Dec. 11, at 1 p.m.
Please send any donations to the American Heart Association in memory of Dana Bruce Mower.

Samuel Alexander Carter
March 5, 1982 — Nov. 23, 2012
Samuel Alexander Carter of Friday Harbor died Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, of an accidental drowning, sometime after 12:30 a.m.
He was 30 years old.
Born March 5, 1982, in Grand Forks, British Columbia, Canada, Sam is the son of Thomas R. Carter and Nina A. White.
Sam attended 1st-12th grade in Friday Harbor, also attending Skagit Valley Community College and Shoreline Community College, where he earned his high school diploma and most of his credits toward an associate arts degree. During that time, he enjoyed rich friendships with peers and faculty, always living by Mr. Westphalen’s “Golden Rule”.
After graduation, in 2001, Sam, along with Todd Lowen, Casey Baisch, Brook Melville and Rosa Blair (mentored by Ben White), spent the next year studying for ISA certification for arbor culture, passing all but one section of the rigorous exam.
Sam balanced commercial fishing in Alaska with arborist work in the San Juan Islands for his remaining years. Finding community in three states: Alaska, California and Washington, Sam spent his summers fishing, falls doing arborist work and winters with close friends. He loved snowboarding, reading cook books, developing recipes and most of all cooking for friends.
With a kind smile and warm sincere interest, he met the world each day. The ring of his laughter as he engaged small children will echo eternally in the canopied foliage of the trees he so dearly loved.
He will be sorely missed…
Losing his mother at age 11, he never got over the pain of her absence; one of his wishes was to be buried by her side. His ashes were transported to Egegik, Alaska on Dec. 3, where he is surely now resting in his mother’s arms.
Sam found his way into many hearts in the community and his family thanks them all for their support during this time of loss.
Sam is survived by his father, Thomas Carter and wife Tamara Carter, stepmother Sarah Bergman, brother Ray Chmiel, sister Alycia Johnson and brother Christian Carter, aunts and uncles; Deanna, Jessica, Roy, Margo, Theresa, Nora and Hazel, and grandmother Margret Horton, and many cousins, nephews and nieces.
There was a small gathering at Evans Funeral Home on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, giving family and close friends an opportunity to say “good-bye” before Sam was flown to Alaska. A funeral in the Egegik Baptist Church, with Paul Bischoffski officiating, was held Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at 11 a.m.
A celebration of Sam’s life will be held at the Friday Harbor Grange, Dec. 23, 2012. The family encourages all who knew Sam to come and to share in the lasting joy his life gave us all.

Theodore Vern Coffelt
March 20, 1930 — September 5, 2013
Vern Coffelt was born in Westsound on Orcas Island to Amos and Helen Smedberg Coffelt.
He grew up on the Smedberg farm on Turtleback Mountain, the third of four brothers. The family worked the farm for a frugal and healthy livelihood, learning old world farming know-how from his grandfather John Gus “JG” Smedberg. Vern’s father Amos worked on the early freight boats and ferries, and died in 1942.
The family was very young. The Coffelt boys were known for being an active, lively bunch who worked long and hard to make ends meet. Vern and his brothers Jack, Amos (Ed) and Russell all attended grade school and high school on Orcas Island.
In 1950, the family moved from the Smedberg place on Turtleback to the fertile Crow Valley farm. Vern stayed with his mother to work the place now known as the Coffelt Farm.
Helen Coffelt passed in 1955. Vern was left with an active farm and full-time operation with sheep, cattle, dairy, poultry and a hay crop to manage. Vern cherished the farm education he had with his grandfather Smedberg on the Turtleback farm.
Family farms were struggling to survive in those years and Vern found it prudent to find other work for several years to support the farm. He worked in logging and construction and then, in 1960, went to work full-time for Orcas Power and Light Cooperative. In the early '60s, he married Florence “Tony” Howard.
In 1977, Vern and Sidney Reynolds were married and formed a life partnership and team that has carried the farm to the successful operation it is today.
In 1995, after 35 years of service as line foreman and later operations manager, Vern retired from OPALCO. Vern spent the rest of his life doing what he was meant and chosen to do. He seldom left the farm and put each day to his calling of working the farm. He loved his work and was committed to producing the best quality food he could for Orcas Island.
August 20, 2013 was Vern’s last day on his beloved farm. He did the chores and daily work and then suffered a crippling stroke during the night. He was airlifted to the hospital in Bellingham and then to Whatcom Hospice House in Fairhaven where he rested, was tended to by Sidney and visited by family and friends.
Vern earned his final rest after two weeks in the constant care of Sidney in hospice. He passed on to his reward on Sept. 5, 2013.
Vern is survived by his wife Sidney; sons Tim and John (Sarah); grandchildren Brandon, Kendra, Jordan and Rayna; brother Russ (Jan) and numerous nieces and nephews. Vern was amous for being a favorite uncle.
Vern will be remembered for his legendary integrity, wide and frequent smile and his wonderful, keen and sharp sense of humor.
He had a remarkable ability to play with words and deliver a clear meaning - with a twinkle.
A memorial service for Vern will be held on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m. at the Oddfellows Hall in Eastsound. Refreshments are being prepared by the Orcas 4H Fur & Feathers Club.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Whatcom Hospice House.
