Warren E. Berg
Dec. 21, 1923 -- May 17, 2006
Warren E. Berg died of lung cancer in his Port Ludlow home in the company of his family and hospice caregiver. He was 80.
He was born to Carl and Edith (Heen) Berg in Enumclaw, where he was an Eagle Scout.
He married
Patricia Elarth on Aug. 9, 1945. She died in 2005.
He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Washington.
During World War II, Mr. Berg served as a Navy bomber pilot, after which he was a commercial pilot with Northwest Airlines for 35 years before retiring.
He lived at Lake Sawyer, near Maple Valley, before moving to Port Ludlow, where he owned a noted rhododendron garden at Hood Canal.
Mr. Berg, who belonged to the Rhododendron Species Foundation Society and traveled to Asia many times to search for rare plants, had a passion for propagating rhodies.
He was awarded a gold medal for producing ``Patty Bee, " named after his wife, and named many other new rhodies after family members and friends.
Mr. Berg, who was a member of Port Townsend Presbyterian Church and the Port Ludlow Computer Club, also enjoyed beekeeping, archery, skiing, photography and rock collecting.
Survivors include sons Tom Berg of Woodinville and Chris Berg of Port Ludlow; daughter Marilyn Lilienthal of Port Angeles; brother Charles Berg and sister Joanne Henry, both of Enumclaw; and five grandchildren.
Services: Private celebration of life was held in the Hood Canal garden.
Public memorial service on June 17 at 2 p.m. at the Rhododendron Species Foundation, Weyerhaeuser Way South, Federal Way.

Aina Charles
April 4, 1928 -- May 23, 2006
Aina Charles of Auburn and Port Angeles died of cancer in Port Angeles. She was 78.
She was born to George and Hannah (Sampson) Bolstrom Sr. in Port Angeles, where she married
Gilbert G. Charles on March 28, 1946.
Mrs. Charles was a homemaker who enjoyed gardening, community events at the tribal center, animals and working crossword puzzles.
Survivors include sons Gary Charles, David Charles and Dennis Charles and daughter JoAnn Charles, all of Port Angeles; son Vernon Charles and daughter Ruth Charles, both of Auburn; brother Gordon Charles of Bellingham and brothers Johnson Charles and Richard Sampson, both of Port Angeles; sisters Helen Charles, Peggy Bowchop, Elva Arakawa and Margaret Sawyer, all of Port Angeles; and one grandchild.
Services: Tuesday, May 30, 11 a.m., funeral in the Lower Elwha Tribal Center, 2851 Lower Elwha Road, Port Angeles. The Revs. Ben Charles and Patricia Bennett will officiate.
Burial will be in Place cemetery, Port Angeles. A dinner in the Lower Elwha Community Center will follow the service.

Frances M. Fox
June 2, 1922 -- May 18, 2006
Frances M. Fox of Sequim died at Sherwood Assisted Living. She was 83. Cause of death is pending.
Mrs. Fox was born to William and Jennie (Carter) MacLean in Tacoma.
Mrs. Fox graduated as valedictorian from Sumner High School in 1940. She attended Tacoma General Hospital School of Nursing and graduated as a registered nurse in 1943.
She worked as a nurse at Tacoma in 1943-54, at Good Samaritan Hospital in 1961-63, for two doctors in Puyallup in 1964-74, and the General Services Administration in 1974-84.
She married
Gail F. Fox in 1950 in Tacoma. He died on July 23, 1993.
She resided in Port Angeles from 1995 until 2000, when she moved to Sequim.
She enjoyed camping, vacations and traveling with her family, and gardening in her flowerbeds.
She was a member of Jovita Baptist Church and Sumner Grange.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law David and Lynn Fox of Port Angeles; daughter Julie Fox of Ukiah, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law Laurel and Petty Anthen of Lake Bay; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brother and sister-in-law Donald and Kay MacLean.
Services: Saturday, June 3, 2 p.m., memorial service at Jovita Baptist Church, 1120 114th Ave. E., Puyallup. Pastor Larry Gray will officiate, and a reception will follow at the church.

Shirley Natalie Klahn
Oct. 9, 1927 -- May 20, 2006
Shirley Natalie Klahn of Forks died of coronary artery disease. She was 78.
She was born in Seattle to Henry and Edna Christine (Claussen) Heeren.
She married
Richard N. Klahn in Tacoma on Sept. 15, 1976. He died March 11, 1992.
A longtime resident of the West End, she was employed by Hoh River Cedar for many years.
In addition to maintaining an open house for family and friends, Mrs. Klahn was an adventuresome cook, avid gardener and voracious reader.
Survivors include sons Rick and Bob Sprinkle of Seattle; stepsons Ed Klahn of Forks and Donald and Richard Klahn, both of Texas; daughter Kathy Heesch and stepdaughter Anita Ferris, both of Forks; brother Sheldon Heeren of Bellevue; many grandchildren and one great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by sister, Barbara Adnvik.
Services: To be held this summer. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.
Danny Lauridsen

Port Angeles resident Danny Lauridsen died at age 65.

Jerald Elmer Louthan
Feb. 15, 1946 -- May 25, 2006
Jerald Elmer Louthan of Forks died of cancer. He was 60.
He was born in Aberdeen to Elmer and Evelene Alice (Grove) Louthan.
After graduating from high school, he joined the navy and served aboard the USS Independence.
He married
Jackie Foster in Montesano on April 7, 1973.
Mr. Louthan, a road-paving supervisor, belonged to the engineers union.
He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He was a fishing guide.
In addition to his wife, survivors include son and daughter-in-law Shannon and Tena Leavitt of Ferndale; son Jim Louthan; daughter and son-in-law Kim and Jim Harrison of Thorne Bay, Alaska; his parents of Montesano; mother-in-law Marie Allen of Forks; brother and sister-in-law Les and Yvonne Louthan of Montesano; sister and brother-in-law Joyce and Gordon Bursell; and four grandchildren.
Services: Tuesday, May 30, 2 p.m., graveside committal in Elma Masonic cemetery, Elma-Monte Road, Elma.

Frances I. Morgan
Aug. 2, 1926 -- May 19, 2006
Former Sequim homemaker Frances I. Morgan of Brownsburg, Ind., died of congestive heart failure. She was 79.
She was born to Hope Calvin and Dolly Bell (Cosper) Fortenberry in Columbia, Miss., where she graduated from Columbia High School.
She married
James Louis Morgan in Port Orchard on May 6, 1949.
Mrs. Morgan was a longtime resident of Sequim, and left the area in 2002.
Survivors include son Tim Morgan of Sequim; sons and daughters-in-law Jerry and Cindi Morgan of Brownsburg, Ind., and Tom and Pam Morgan of Meridian, Miss.; daughter Jackie Olsen of St. Marys, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law Tally and Kyle Kettel of Poulsbo; and brother and sister-in-law Harroll and Eleanore Fortenberry of Augusta, Ga.
Also surviving are sisters Nell Cody of Gulfport, Miss., Jennifer Olsen, Dylan Morgan and Sydney Morgan, all of Meridian, Miss.; sister and brother-in-law Elizabeth Wayne and Leo Von Pingle of Ridgeland, Miss.; and three grandchildren.
Her husband died Sept. 5, 2001.
Mrs. Morgan was also preceded in death by brothers Joe Fortenberry and Carroll Fortenberry as well as sisters Pauline Cofield, Sarah Houston, Eula Rayborn and Henrietta Ashley.
Services: At her request, none. Matthew's Mortuary, Brownsburg, Ind., is in charge of arrangements.

FRANCES I. MORGAN
Fran passed away on May 19, 2006, in Brownsburg, Indiana. She was a former longtime resident of Sequim.
Fran was born to Hope Calvin and Dolly Bell (Cosper) Fortenberry of Columbia, Mississippi, on August 2, 1926, along with her twin sister, Elizabeth Wayne.
She was a graduate of Columbia High School.
She was in the Navy when she met her husband, Jim, who was also in the Navy.
Fran and Jim Morgan were wed on May 6, 1949, in Port Orchard, Washington.
Fran mustered out of the Navy, while Jim continued on to have a 30-year career and retired as a lieutenant commander.
During those 30 years and more, they moved multiple times to different parts of the country. During all those moves she never lost her Southern accent!
Fran and Jim settled in Sequim for their last years together. At Jim's passing in 2001, they celebrated 52 years of marriage.
Entertaining, traveling and quilting were some of her favorite pastimes.
But the most important was her family.
She is survived by five children: daughters, Jackie Olsen of St. Marys, Georgia, Tammy L. (Kyle) Kettel of Poulsbo, Washington; sons, Jerry (Cindi) Morgan of Brownsburg, Indiana, Tim Morgan of Sequim, Washington, and Tom (Pam) Morgan of Meridian, Mississippi.
She was also lucky to have three wonderful grandchildren: Jennifer Olsen, Dylan Morgan and Sydney Morgan of Meridian, Mississippi.
Her twin sister, Elizabeth Wayne (Leo) VonPingel of Ridgeland, Mississippi, survives her, along with sister Nell Cody of Gulfport, Mississippi, and brother Harroll (Eleanor) Fortenberry of Augusta, Georgia.
Sisters-in-law Marilynn (Dave) Deaver of California, Maxine (Richard) Harless of Washington, and brother-in-law Jim Stevens of Hawaii, along with many nieces and nephews, also survive her.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Joe Fortenberry and Carroll Fortenberry as well as her sisters, Pauline Cofield, Sarah Houston, Eula Rayborn and Henrietta Ashley. Her sister-in-law, Jerri Stevens, of Hawaii also preceded her in death.
At her request, no services were held. She is inurned with Jim at Tahoma National cemetery.
