Ruth Theresa Wicklund
The Ultimate Grandma
Ruth Theresa Wicklund was born on Aug. 20, 1910, in Jordan Valley, Oregon. Ruth was the second of five children born to Joseph and Rosella Lessman, homesteaders who raised cattle.
Ruth remembered a childhood which emphasized education and was marked with hard work. She rode in a wagon pulled by the family's horses, Prince and Ned, to attend the one-room schoolhouse.
Ruth enjoyed spelling and studied diligently, graduating from the eighth grade.
Ruth traveled to Gem State Adventist Academy in Caldwell, Idaho, to attend high school. She traveled the 80-mile journey with her sister, Rose, on top of a load of hay a neighbor was delivering to town.
She was the valedictorian of her graduating class.
After high school, Ruth moved to Portland, Oregon, where she got a job working at the Portland Sanitarium and Hospital for a year.
While there, she was encouraged to apply to nursing school. She was accepted into the program.
She promptly moved into the dormitory and began her nurse's training.
After she completed the three-year program, she accepted a position working for the County Hospital in Longview, Washington. The pay was $50 a month and provided room and board.
She made an acquaintance with a couple who became lifelong friends, Gene and Liz Nelson.
The Nelsons introduced Ruth to a handsome young man named Ennis August David Wicklund, who worked at Weyerhaeuser.
David and Ruth fell in love and were married May 24, 1938. They traveled by bus to New York and met a friend from Ruth's high school days who took the newly married couple to Radio City Music Hall for a show.
The honeymoon continued, and Ruth and David traveled by ocean steamer to Guttenberg, Sweden.
Finally, a train took the couple to Sundsval and David was able to introduce his new bride to his family.
After a three-month honeymoon, the couple returned to Longview where David built a new home that they would enjoy throughout their long and happy marriage.
While living in Longview, Ruth worked the night shift at County Hospital. Her work included admitting patients, sterilizing equipment, assisting in obstetrics and helping with anesthesia during surgery.
From 1940 to 1972, she specialized in obstetrics at Cowlitz General Hospital and St. John's Hospital.
David and Ruth had three children: Gary Wicklund and wife, Betty, of Damascus, Oregon; Linnea Balkan and husband, Mike, of Sequim, Washington; and Nancy Parkins and husband, Ray, of Radium Hot Springs, British Columbia.
Grandchildren brought a newfound joy for the couple and they proved to be amazing grandparents.
Ruth was the ultimate grandma. Their grandchildren would visit them often and cry when they had to leave. There was never enough time with grandma.
In 1972, Ruth retired from nursing but not from her strong tradition of hard work.
She continued to sew, crochet, garden and can fruit, tomatoes and green beans for her family.
In 1992, David passed away in the family home with Ruth at his side.
Ruth moved to Sequim in 1994 and shared the home of her daughter, Linnea, and son-in-law, Mike Balkan.
Ruth's hands were seldom idle as she crocheted pillowcases, doilies, pieced quilts and made countless baby blankets, continuing until just weeks before her death.
She was able to baby-sit her great-grandchildren and remained an avid writer, staying in touch with her family and friends.
Ruth's life created a foundation on love and service that touched everyone she met. That history continues in the lives of her three children, nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She is survived by a sister, Alice Lessman of Enterprise, Oregon.
After 96 years of living well, Ruth died at home on September 21, 2006.
She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Saffia Morkely.
Donations in Ruth's memory may be made to the Adventist Community Services, 30 Sanford Lane, Sequim, WA 98382, or Hospice of Clallam County, P.O. Box 2014, Port Angeles, WA 98362.
