Oakes, Leonard Thursday, 13 Oct 2005
Leonard Robert Oakes of New Port Richey, Fla. died Oct. 13 in Franklin, Tenn.
He was a native of Elizabeth, N.J., a hotel executive and a veteran of the Navy.
Survivors include sons Thomas Oakes of Federal Way, Stephan Oakes of New Port Richey, Fla. and Richard Oakes of Franklin; daughters Delores Oakes of Buffalo, N.Y. and Kathleen Burns of Lake Orion, Mich.; a sister, Loretta Buff of St. Petersburg, Fla.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann.
A memorial Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Oct. 18 at St. Philip Catholic Church in Franklin.

Gilbert, Bryon Tuesday, 11 Oct 2005
Bryon W. Gilbert of Wenatchee, a former Federal Way resident, died Sept. 11. He was 46.
He was born Feb. 19, 1959, and graduated from Decatur High School in Federal Way. He played basketball at Big Bend Community College and Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore.
He was a basketball coach at Big Bend, where he won a NWAACC championship in 1982. He also coached basketball in Guam and Denver, Colo., and since 1999 was a volunteer assistant coach for Wenatchee Valley College.
He was an assistant chief pilot for Continental Micronesia in Guam and a pilot for Continental Airlines, based out of Denver, Hawaii and Newark, N.J.
Survivors include his wife, Malou of Wenatchee; a daughter, Dominque; a son, Grant; and brothers Ronald Gilbert of Graham and Donald Gilbert of Tacoma. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Gloria Gilbert.
A memorial service was held Sept. 18 in Wenatchee.

Audett, Aloise Sunday, 09 Oct 2005
Aloise Marie Audett, a 25-year resident of the Auburn West Hill area, died Oct. 9. She was 78.
She was born May 1, 1927 in Seattle to Knute and Edna Magnuson. She she was a 1945 graduate of Ballard High School.
She was a long-time member of the Saratoga Pinochle Club.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Milton; children Guy Audett of Port Orchard, Brad Audett of Federal Way, Kurt Audett of Maple Valley and Cheri Audett of Kirkland; a brother, Harold Magnuson of Oshkosh, Wis.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Oct. 22 at Yahn and Son Funeral Home, 55 W. Valley Highway S. in Auburn.
Harwood, Karen Saturday, 10 Sep 2005
Karen Ann Harwood of Federal Way died Sept. 10 at St. Joseph Hospital in Tacoma. She was 46.
She was born May 25, 1959 in Seattle. She was a 1977 graduate of Federal Way High School and was a lifetime resident of Federal Way and Auburn.
She was the office manager at Active U.S.A., Inc, where she was employed for 29 years.
Survivors include her son Beau David; parents Gary and Gloria Harwood; and brothers Mark Nichols, Brian Nichols, Wayne Nichols, Chock Nichols and Gary Harwood.
A celebration of her life will begin at 2 p.m. Sept. 21 at Generational Hope Christian Center in Maple Valley.
At the suggestion of the family, memorials may be made to Children’s Orthopedic Hospital Foundation, MS:S-200, P.O. Box 50020, Seattle, WA 98145-5020.
Arrangements were by Yahn and Son Funeral Home in Auburn.
Scheerer, Carolyn Thursday, 15 Sep 2005
Carolyn Buck Scheerer died Sept. 15 in Federal Way. She was 79.
She was born July 22, 1926 in Wethersfield, Conn., and graduated from Lasell College in Auburndale, Maine.
She moved to Seattle in 1951 and worked at Boeing until retirement.
She was an active member in her church and with the Mountaineers.
Survivors include her daughter, Nancy Rusk; a sister, Barbara Buck Lipes; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton, and son, David.
Services will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 1 at Steel Lake Presbyterian Church, 1829 S. 308th St. in Federal Way.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to Steel Lake Presbyterian Church.
Rhoads, Michael Tuesday, 13 Sep 2005
Michael Rhoads died Sept. 13.
He was born Jan. 13, 1978 in Seattle. He grew up in Federal Way.
Survivors include his parents, Jerry and Carolyn Rhoads of Federal Way; sisters Kathleen Rhoads and Colleen Reed; and a brother, Jerome Rhoads.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Sept. 20 at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 30525 Eighth Ave. S. in Federal Way.

Jirka, Carl Sunday, 21 Aug 2005
Carl J. Jirka, 58, died Aug. 21 in Kirkland, where he lived.
He was born Oct. 20, 1946 in Chicago, Ill.
He was a longtime employee of Boeing.
Surviivors include Dawn Knight; children Ian and Landree Jirka; his mother, Ann; and brothers Robert, James and Jeffrey Jirka. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Jirka.
A private family service was held.
Holstin, Daniel Saturday, 27 Aug 2005
Daniel William Holstin died Aug. 27 in Montana.
He was 59.
He was born Dec. 3, 1945 in Puyallup. He grew up in Federal Way, where he graduated from Federal Way High School in 1964.
He served in the Navy as an air traffic controller for four years.
He and his wife, Rowena, were married
Nov. 13, 1974. They moved to Thompson Falls, Mont., where he helped found the local search and rescue unit and served as an emergency medical technician for Thompson Falls Ambulance for many years. He also was a certified grader and worked for Crown Pacific and Thompson River Lumber.
He was a member of Elks and was elected second exalted ruler of his local lodge.
Survivors include his wife; children Tom Mazur and Debby Franck, both of Thompson Falls, Leonard Holstin of Colorado and Danielle Creekmore of Idaho; siblings Jack Holstin of Federal Way, Diana Burnett of Puyallup and Donna Olson of Edgewood; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Helen and William Holstin.
No services were held.
Fields, Douglas Monday, 22 Aug 2005
Douglas Allen Fields died Aug. 22. He was 73.
He was a Twin Lakes resident in Federal Way since 1966.
He was born March 24, 1932, grew up in Seattle and graduated from Garfield High School (1950) and the University of Washington (1955).
He was a captain in the Air Force until 1958.
Highlights of his 44-year career in real estate included being a founding sales manager with Quadrant Real Estate in the development of Twin Lakes, and co-founding Evergreen Realty. In 1978, he purchased South King Realty and handled the United Homes Development in West Campus. After selling South King Realty, he became an associate broker for John L. Scott Real Estate.
He was a member of the Clan MacLachlan, Rotary International, The Model T Club, The Jaguar Club and Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club. He was a Master Mason with Eureka Lodge 20 and served as president of the Federal Way Soccer Association. He was active with local rose-growers’ societies had more than 400 roses throughout his yard.
He was a crew member on the sailboat racing team that won the Six Meter World Cup in 1973, was a licensed aeronaut for hot air balloons and purchased or built several vintage automobiles.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Aletha; a son, Skye Fields; a daughter, Natali Hughes; step-daughters Joanne Gore and Leslie Landoe; a brother, Robert Fields; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was conducted Aug. 26 at Marine View Presbyterian Church, followed by a celebration of Mr. Fields’ life at Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club.
The family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Association.
Humphrey, Maria Sunday, 31 Jul 2005
Maria C. Humphrey of Federal Way died July 31.
She was born in New Mexico. In her early teens, she was removed from her Pueblo village, entered the Indian Boarding School and graduated in 1952 from the nursing school at Ganado Mission School in Ganado, Ariz. She and her husband moved to Seattle in 1957.
After earning a nursing degree from Seattle University, she was a nurse supervisor and program coordinator for the Seattle-King County and Tacoma-Pierce County health departments. As director of social-human services and nursing supervisor for the Seattle Indian Health Board, she helped open the first Seattle neo-natal/well baby clinic for urban Native Americans in the mid-1970s, which earned her national recognition. She also worked as a health specialist for Westinghouse Health Systems. She retired in 1997 as director of nursing services for the Portland Area Indian Health Services, covering three Northwest states.
In 1986, she received the Henry M. Jackson Award for her work in Native American health.
Survivors include her sons, John R. Humphrey III and Scott Humphrey, sisters Ruby Trujillo and Josie Montoya, and a brother, Felipe Lauriano. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, John, in December 2004.
A memorial service and reception are scheduled for 3 p.m. Aug. 28 at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, 3939 SW. 331st St.

Passey, Richard Monday, 15 Aug 2005
Richard E. Passey, 70, died Aug. 15 in Des Moines.
He was born Feb. 17, 1935 in Montpelier, Idaho.
He worked for Lockheed and retired from Boeing as an aerospace engineer.
Survivors include his children ?”?” Kim, Lisa, Dani, Kelly, Laurie and Lynette ?”?” and a sister, Marsha. He was preceded in death by his wife of 38 years, Joy.
