Charnell, Shirley Monday, 20 Feb 2006
Shirley Charnell, who died Jan. 20, is remembered by friends and associates for her civic involvement in Federal Way.
Charnell, a past recipient of the Citizen of the Year Award by the Federal Way Chamber of Commerce, “was always working for the betterment of her community in every shape or form, ” said Mary Davies, a lifelong friend.
Charnell’s volunteer activities included the Historical Society of Federal Way, Federal Way Community Council (including two years as president), the Chamber of Commerce, Candlestick Players of Federal Way, the District Court site selection committee, the community plan committee, Soroptimist International and Boys and Girls Club.
She was president of League of Women Voters of South King County, represented Federal Way on the King County Policy Development Committee and served with Municipal League, United Way and groups dealing with courts and Forward Thrust.
Then-governor Dan Evans appointed her to the Washington Women’s Council for four years.
In 1988, she helped organize the historical society which continues today. The group honored her at a luncheon in December 1966 when she moved to Puyallup.
Charnell was born Nov. 9, 1933 in Honolulu, Hawaii. She moved at an early age with her grandparents to Federal Way, where she helped her grandfather, Andrew Kristensen, bring in the hay at his 40-acre homestead at Pacific Highway South and South 320th Street.
Survivors include five children, 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her family will hold a memorial service for her Feb. 18 at 3 p.m. at Unity Church of Edgewood, which is located at 2908 Meridian E.
Trask, Betty Wednesday, 18 Jan 2006
Betty L. Trask of Des Moines died Jan. 18.
She attended Church of the Good Shephard in Federal Way and was a longtime volunteer with the Federal Way Symphony.
Survivors include her son, Grover Trask, his wife Kellye and their two children.
The family requests that any memorials be sent to Federal Way Care Givers, in care of Church of the Good Shephard.
Trenary, Marklin Sunday, 15 Jan 2006
Marklin Ray Trenary died Jan. 15. He was 52.
He was born Dec. 31, 1953 in Great Bend, Kan. His family relocated to Seattle in 1958. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Federal Way in 1972.
He worked for Boeing in Everett for 20 years.
Survivors include his parents, Leon and Colleen Trenary of Federal Way; sisters Terri, Becky and Beverly; and a brother, Curtis.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Jan. 29 at Federal Way Church of Christ, 30012 Military Road S.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
DeLisle, Judy Saturday, 07 Jan 2006
Judy Barbosa DeLisle of Kent died Jan. 7. She was 65.
She was born May 6, 1940 in Seattle.
Survivors include her husband, Gary; sons Roy and Gary Jr.; daughters Lee and Ronna; and sisters Joan Hanson of Auburn and Sue Langford of Federal Way.
Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Jan. 21 at Rivercrest cemetery in Burien.
Iwamoto, Rae Friday, 30 Dec 2005
Rae Marie Iwamoto died Dec. 30. She was 42.
She was born on Sept. 25, 1963 to John Iwamoto and Crystal Butler. She was a resident of Federal Way for more than 30 years
She worked as an assistant teacher at Muckleshoot Tribal School
Survivors include a daughter, Cassandra Johnston, who is a student at Hawaii Pacific University in Honolulu, Hawaii, brothers James Iwamoto of Renton and Daniel Iwamoto of Federal Way, and her mother, who lives in Spokane. She was preceded in death by her father.
A memorial service will held Jan. 14 at 2 p.m. at SeaTac Bible Church at 29926 37th Ave S. in Auburn.
Brazeal, Jean Thursday, 29 Dec 2005
Jean Brazeal of Federal Way died Dec. 29.
She was born in 1929 in Nebraska.
She moved to Idaho, where she married
Robert Brazeal on Aug. 9, 1947.
They lived in Vale, Ore. for three years, then Gering, Neb., where she started her career in banking.
In 1974, they moved to the Seattle area. She worked for banks in Seattle and Bellevue, eventually retiring to travel to California, Maui, Honolulu and Alaska with her husband, as his construction job building McDonald’s restaurants required.
More than 15 years ago, they settled at Kloshe Illahee in Federal Way, where she was the horseshoe champion.
Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Robert; a son, Ronald Brazeal of Canada; a daughter, Carol Shapiro of Arizona; brothers and sisters Donna, Ines, Deloris, Linda, Clyde and Carl; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Jan. 6 at the Kloshe Illahee clubhouse.

Wintler, Rebecca Monday, 25 Dec 2006
Rebecca Ann Wintler, a longtime Federal Way resident, died Dec. 25. She was 80.
She was born May 3, 1925 in Portland, Ore. She graduated from Oregon State College (OSU), where she was national president of the Home Economics Society for one year and a member of Alpha Chi Omega.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Carl, of Federal Way; sons, Marty, Ben and Casey; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Dec. 31 at Our Saviour's Baptist Church in Federal Way. A graveside service was conducted Jan. 3 at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent.
At the request of the family, memorials may be made to the Our Saviour's Baptist Church.
Wolfe, Kate Monday, 25 Dec 2006
Kate Virginia Wolfe died Dec. 25. She was an eight-year resident of Federal Way.
Survivors include a daughter, Lynne Garnett of Federal Way; a son, William Wolfe of Tacoma; relatives in Baltimore Md.; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren in Washington.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 8 at Unity Church, 2908 Meridian E. in Edgewood.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Northwest Kidney Foundation.
Dalton, Thelma Tuesday, 13 Dec 2005
Thelma Woodward Dalton died of cancer Dec. 13 in Federal Way. She was 87.
She was born Sept. 8, 1918 in Preston, Idaho.
She lived most of her life in Utah, where she ran a well drilling business with her husband, to whom she was married
for 25 years.
Survivors include her children ?”?” Janet Rumel of Federal Way, Jon and Darrel of Texas, and Richard and Diane of Utah; a sister, Joyce Dickason of Seattle; 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Burial will be in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Kearns, Jack Thursday, 01 Dec 2005
Jack Kearns died on Dec. 1. He was 81.
He was born Aug. 14, 1924 in Charksburg, W. Va.
He was a master chief in the Navy, serving for 24 years. After retiring from the Navy, he worked for Proctor & Gamble in Oxnard, Calif.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Milton and the Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Ilene, of Federal Way; sons Jeff and Kenny of Boise, Idaho; four grandchildren and one great-child.
A memorial service was held at Tahoma cemetery in Kent.
Collins, Waneda Wednesday, 16 Nov 2005
Waneda Ione Collins died Nov. 16 in Federal Way. She was 86.
She was born March 7, 1919 in Clinton, Iowa.
She attended college for one year. She married
Lawrence Collins on March 27, 1944 in Seattle. In 1982, she retired from managing mobile home parks in California.
Survivors include her husband, Lawrence, of Napa, Calif.; a son, Michael V. Comstock of Federal Way; a daughter, Sharon K. Kline of Black Diamond; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Jones, Zakarij Thursday, 24 Nov 2005
Zakarij Mason Jones died Nov. 24 as a result of a diving accident in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where he lived. He was 30.
He was born Nov. 12, 1975 in San Jose, Calif. He grew up in Federal Way, graduating from Decatur High School in 1994.
He married
Robyn Woodman on Oct. 12, 2003. They traveled in Europe for six months before moving to Belize for a job opportunity.
He was a diving educator, earning his first instructor rating at age 18. In 2001, he earned a Course Director Certification, making him one of 1, 500 in the world of Professional Association of Diving Instructors. In 2004, he earned a Tri-Mix Instructor Trainer rating with Diving Science and Technology, making him one of 125 in the world.
Survivors include his wife; his father, David Jones; and a sister, Bekah Jones. He was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara.
A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 4 at the Seattle Aquarium, 1483 Alaskan Way in Seattle.
Smith, Mabel Saturday, 05 Nov 2005
Mabel Louise Smith died Nov. 5. She was 89.
She was born Sept. 12, 1916 in Brainerd, Minn. She was a long-term resident of Des Moines.
Survivors include her daughter, Joyce Sweetman, and one grandchild, both of Federal Way. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her son, Gary, and husband Bob.
A memorial service was held Nov. 12 at Riverton Crest cemetery.
Christianson, Alvin Monday, 21 Nov 2005
Alvin E. Christianson, 78, died Nov. 21.
He was a 25-year resident of Federal Way before moving to Puyallup two years ago.
He was born Nov. 10, 1927 in Wynyard, Saskatchewan, Canada, and joined the U.S. Army Air Force in December 1945. While stationed at Chanute Field in Illinois, he met Vera Buckley, whom he married
on March 12, 1949. They moved to Seattle in 1955.
He retired in 1990 after a 28-year career with Oak Harbor Freight Lines.
Survivors include his wife; children Angela Peters of Federal Way, Janie Kay of Burien, Dan Christianson of Newport, Ore., and Dennis Christianson of Newark, Calif.; sisters Fern Parker Dolores Siereveld and Jonina Johnson; brothers Ken Christianson and Tracy Christianson; seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by two granddaughters, Melissa Peters and Tara Christianson, and three brothers ?”?” Pall Matheson, Johann Matheson and Kristjan Matheson.
Funeral services were conducted Nov. 23 at Yahn and Son Funeral Home, followed by interment with military honors at Mountain View cemetery in Auburn.
