Hall, Edith Friday, 03 Feb 2006
Edith Marcella Hall died Feb. 3. She was 78.
She settled in Federal Way in 1974 and worked in the area at McDonald’s as a hostess and at Boeing as a security guard. She recorded news and books for the blind, and she was a founding member of Solveig Lodge 31 of the Daughters of Norway.
Survivors include her children –– Linda Hall, Patrick Hall, Thomas Callahan and Donna Robinson –– six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the American Heart Association or to the scholarship fund of Solveig Lodge 31 of the Daughters of Norway.
A memorial service was conducted Feb. 23 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Burien.

King, Myrtle Sunday, 12 Feb 2006
Myrtle Jeanette King of Federal Way died Feb. 12. She was of 82.
She was born July 13, 1923, in Ralph, S.D. to Ole and Petra Storlie, who immigrated from Norway in the late 1800s.
She married Walter King in 1945 after a five-week courtship.
She worked as a cook at Clark County Holiness Association Camp, Friendsview Manor and NAPS Deli in Newberg, Ore., Tualitin Hospital in Hillsboro, Ore. and Twin Rocks Friends Camp on the Oregon coast. She also lived in Bend, Ore. and Poulsbo.
Survivors include daughters Shirley Tunsen of Spokane, Sharon Sullivan of Federal Way and Linda Edwards of Vancouver; a son, Bill King of Kitsap County; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her husband of 58 years, Walter, brothers Selmar, Henry, Pete, Norman, Bill and Bud, and sisters Signey Crevier, Palma Blume, Edith Johnson and Vi Disbrow.
She was a member of the First Friends Church in Vancouver and active in the women’s missionary group there.
A funeral service was held Friday at First Friends Church in Vancouver, followed by a graveside service at Willamette National cemetery in Portland, Ore.
Memorials may be made to Twin Rocks Friends Camp & Conference Center, P.O. Box 6, Rockaway Beach, Ore.

Gartner, Ruby Wednesday, 01 Feb 2006
Services are scheduled for next week for Ruby Gartner.
A rosary will be held Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. at Bonney-Watson Federal Way, 1535 SW. Dash Point Road. The Funeral Mass will be Feb. 15 at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 30525 Eighth Ave. S. Federal Way, where she was member.
She was born May 6, 1914 in New Salem, N.D. to Hector and Mary DeClercq. She grew up and attended school in Hebron, N.D.
She married Christ Gartner in 1935 and they moved to Federal Way in 1943 so he could work in the shipyards. They were married for 56 years.
Survivors include her daughter, Geralyn Stevens of Federal Way; a son, Douglas Gartner of Puyallup; a brother, Ernest DeClercq of Helena, Mont.; sisters Maybelle Fehr of Bismarck, N.D. and Laura Pfleger of Portland, Ore.; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1991, son Dwight Gartner in 2002, a brother and three sisters.
Memorials may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.

Vorwerk, Lorraine Thursday, 30 Feb 2006
Lorraine Vorwerk, 74, died Jan. 30.
She was born Dec. 9, 1931 in Becker County Minn. In 1957, she moved to Washington with her husband, where they settled in Auburn. She lived there for 49 years.
Survivors include her four children –– Lee Vorwerk, Les Vorwerk, Barbara Strain and Bonnie Osborn –– and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Feb. 11 at 3 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall at 31519 Sixth Ave. S. in Federal Way, followed by an informal open house reception from 4 to 7 p.m. at her home.
Arrangements are by Bonney-Watson Federal Way.

Wilma Grohs
WILMA J. GROHS, 80, died 6/14/06 at St. Francis Hospital in Federal Way. She was born on June 29, 1925 in Mountain View, MO. She married Harvey L. Grohs in 1947 in Portland, OR.
Wilma enjoyed gardening and was an avid painter. Wilma also traveled with her husband for over 25 years within the US and abroad to many foreign countries. Wilma traveled on several trade missions with other representatives from the State of Washington to establish foreign trade for their business and the State of Washington. All of her hard work was paid off when the business received a President E Award for exporting excellence.
She was truly a great woman and will be missed.
Wilma is survived by her husband, Harvey of Des Moines; son, Larry Grohs of Des Moines; daughter, Riva Bjorklund of Federal Way and grandchildren, Nina, Kristina, Matt and Greg.
Visitation will be 6/20/06 from 3to7pm, funeral services will be on 6/21/06 at 1pm, both at Yahn and Son Funeral Home with burial to follow at Mt. View cemetery.

Alton Carl Bortz
Al Bortz of Seattle passed away peacefully to join the Lord on June 11, 2006 at St. Frances Hospital in Federal Way, WA. He was born on November 26, 1923 to Charles and Carrie Bortz in Meyersville, PA (Allentown). Al was one of ten children and spent his early life helping with may chores on the family homestead. He graduated from Whitehall High School in Allentown, PA in 1942. Al served four years in Army ordinance in WWII and worked as an interpreter and clerk. In 1947 he married his wife, Rita, in Auburn, WA. They made their home in Seattle where they lived until Al moved to a nursing home in 2003. Al enjoyed his career as a lithographer for 40 years and he was a member of the Amalgamated Lithographers Union. He had many happy times with his grandchildren and they were his pride and joy. Al especially loved the many summers he spent fishing at Blue Lake with his family.
Al is survived by his wife of 59 years, Rita; daughter and son-in-law, Audrey and Dale White, and their children Ashley and Nick of Ephrata; son Steve Bortz, and his sons Tim and Matt, all of Seattle. He is also survived by four sisters, Olive Stauffer, Polly Reigel, Lorene Snyder, and Betty Gersbach all in Pennsylvania; sister-in-law, Norma Smoczyk of Seattle, and numerous neices and nephews.
There will be a private burial at Mt. View cemetery in Auburn. A memorial mass will be held at a later date at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Seattle, WA.

Norma Hoffman
Norma Jean (Payne) Hoffman was born 16 December 1922 in LaGrande, Oregon and died 6 June 2006 in Renton, Washington.
The daughter of William Vernon Payne and Irma Henrie, she married Gerald O. Hoffman of Salt Lake City, Utah 6 June 1941 in Eugene, Oregon.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Wilma Comfort.
She is survived by her husband, her brothers Charles William (Bill) Elder, Gordon Elder, and Richard Elder, her children Ronald Hoffman, Jimmy Hoffman, Linda Kay Whiting, Larry Hoffman, William Dale Hoffman, Donald Hoffman, Dean Hoffman, and Douglas Hoffman, 47 grandchildren, and 92 great-grandchildren.
Her funeral will be Monday, 19 June 2006 at 11:00 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 816 Field Ave NE (formerly 11852 140 th Ave SE), Renton, Washington.

Klinger, Judy Thursday, 16 Nov 2006
Judy Klinger
Judy Kay Klinger died peacefully in her home in Federal Way on Nov. 16, 2006, at age 51.
Judy’s faith in God along with her family and friends gave her the strength for her courageous five-year battle with breast cancer.
Judy was born Jan. 8, 1955, in San Pablo, Calif. She served in the U.S. Army as a medic. After the Army, she lived in Massachusetts followed by Vancouver, Wash., where she was employed as a school aide and custodian. Judy also lived in Glasgow, Mont., and worked at the St. Marie Bowling Alley. In 1993, Judy moved to Federal Way, where she worked for Creative Minds, Learning World and Alaska Airlines. Judy’s grandchildren and family were her major focus in life and she was a friend to all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband of 12 years, Roger L. Klinger; daughter Siobhan Laulu of Federal Way; son Matthew Burnham of Federal Way; stepdaughter Jennifer Meyer of Lacey; stepson Jason Klinger of Federal Way; brother John Franulavich of Orchards, Wash.; sister Andrea Franulavich of Anacortes, Wash.; and her grandchildren Angelica Barron, Cecilia Laulu, Dylan Clelano, Taylor Klinger and Christopher Baraglia.
Funeral services were held Nov. 21 at Yahn and Son Funeral Home in Auburn. Burial was at Mountain View cemetery in Auburn. Memorial contributions may be made to The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Puget Sound Affiliate, 1900 N. Northlake Way, Suite 135 Seattle, WA 98103.

Burks, William Roy Friday, 10 Nov 2006
William Roy Burks
William Roy Burks died Nov. 10, 2006, in Belt, Mont., at age 68 after a brave fight against cancer. He was a former Federal Way resident for more than 20 years.
He was born March 8, 1938, in Lone Pine, Calif. He worked for K&K; Trucking and Bobby Wolford Trucking. Survivors include his wife, Terrentia Burks, of Montana; stepfather Jack Vanhorn of Montana; brother Wally (Terri) Burks of Montana; sister Donna Randall of Iowa; sons Craig (Lisa) Burks of California, Anthony (Linda) Burks of Montana; daughters Laura Burks of Federal Way, Billie Adams of California, Sherri Issak of California; and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by parents Vera and Ellsworth Burks. Schnider Funeral Home in Montana handled the arrangements.

Cady, Byron Randolph Sunday, 05 Nov 2006
Byron Randolph Cady Jr. died Nov. 5, 2006, at his home of 40 years in Federal Way.
He was born Oct. 21, 1929, in Lowell, Mass. He graduated from Bowdoin College and came to the Northwest with Weyerhaeuser, eventually retiring in 1984.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Louise Coburn Cady; daughters Jennifer Baugh, Laura Hilby (husband David) and Pamela Fogelberg (husband Jack); seven grandchildren; and his sister Priscilla Clement of Westford, Mass.
He was an active and devoted member of Wayside United Church of Christ and the Federal Way Kiwanis.
Services will be held 1 p.m. Nov. 11 at Wayside UCC, 2000 SW Dash Point Road, Federal Way. Remembrances can be made to Wayside or a charity of your choice.

Guillette, Ernestine “Tina” Tuesday, 31 Oct 2006
Ernestine “Tina” Guillette
Ernestine “Tina” Guillette died at her Federal Way home on Oct. 31 at age 75 after a battle with lung cancer.
She was born June 21, 1931, in Athol, Mass. In 1951, she married Leon “Gil” Guillette who preceded her in death.
She was a homemaker until her children grew up, then went to work for J.C. Penney as a sales associate.
She is survived by her daughter Teenamarie Callahan of Federal Way and Thomas Guillette of Vancouver, Wash.; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and many cousins.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 4 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Federal Way. Visitation and rosary were held Nov. 3 at the Gaffney Funeral Home Chapel. Internment will be at Calvary cemetery.

Stanley Tomich
Stanley G. Tomich died Oct. 29 at his Federal Way home at age 82.
He was born July 7, 1924, in Roslyn, Wash., and served in Europe with the U.S. Army during World War II from 1941-45. He lived in Federal Way the past 18 years. He worked for Boeing for 13 years and retired from the Seattle Water Department in 1985.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Pat Tomich of Federal Way; son Tony (Danielle) Tomich of Portland, Ore.; daughters Mary (Tim) Mauceri of Federal Way, Linda (Jim) Graddon of Tacoma; two grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial Mass was celebrated Nov. 3 at St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Federal Way, with internment at Gethsemane cemetery in Federal Way.
In lieu of flowers, send remembrances to Northwest Parkinson's Foundation, P.O. Box 56, Mercer Island, WA 98040.
Arrangements were made by Marlatt Funeral Home in Kent.

Dietrick Jones
Dietrick (Deke) Jones died at home on Nov. 17, 2006, at age 89.
He was born Dec. 19, 1916, in Olympia. He was an engineer and worked at Boeing for more than 40 years.
He was past president of the Federal Way Historical Society, Friendship Force, Northwest Council of Camera Clubs and the North Lake Improvement Club.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Jones; his four children Jana McIlroy, Marna Jones, Gary Jones and Glenda Jones; and eight grandchildren.
Private burial services were held Nov. 21 at the Masonic Memorial Park in Tumwater. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Federal Way Historical Society or the North Lake Improvement Club.
