Turner, James Saturday, 24 May 2003
James E. Turner died May 24 at the University of Washington Medical Center.
Turner was born March 6, 1953 in Seattle and graduated from Federal Way High School in 1971.
He served in the Navy for six years aboard a guided missile cruiser. After finishing his tour of duty, he completed his bachelor of science in electrical engineering at the University of Washington in 1981. He earned a masters in the same field at UW in 1988. He worked for Boeing for 22 years.
He served as a deacon at Christ’s Church in Federal Way and taught Sunday school for many years. He coached Little League baseball for 10 years.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia; sons John, Tim and Todd; his parents, John and Maxine; brothers David and Bill; and a sister, Sheri Dunn.
A memorial service was conducted May 28 at Christ’s Church.
The family suggests remembrances be made to the Christ’s Church building fund.
King, Walter Sunday, 03 Aug 2003
Walter Peery King died Aug. 3, 2003, in Federal Way. He was 88.
He was born Nov. 24, 1914, in Buhl, Idaho. He lived in the Vancouver area, beginning in 1938, until his recent move to Federal Way.
He attended George Fox University, worked in construction as a contractor and was a manager for Evergreen Rentals and Earl Kelly’s Buffet. He also was a World War II veteran and a former cook for the Vancouver Veterans Administration Hospital. In addition, he was a maintenance supervisor for Vancouver First Friends Church and managed Twin Rocks Friends Camp, where he was a pastor for Friends Church. He was a member of many Christian organizations, including the Clark County Holiness Association.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Myrtle; daughters Shirley Tunsen of Everett, Sharon Sullivan of Federal Way and Linda Edwards of Arlington, Wash.; a son, Bill of Poulsbo; a sister, Maxine Larsen of King Hill, Idaho; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Burial with military honors was Aug. 8 at Willamette National cemetery in Portland, Ore. A memorial service was Aug. 9 at Vancouver First Friends Church. Evergreen Staples Funeral Chapel was in charge.

Twylla Caudle, Des Moines resident
Twylla Magel LaViolette Caudle of Des Moines died July 30 in Seattle.
She was 66.
She was born Nov. 30, 1936, in Bismark, N.D.
She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Seattle and Federal Way High School.
She married
Dale H. Caudle in 1953.
She is survived by her husband; sons Randy Caudle of Milton, Cary Caudle of Federal Way and Lloyd Caudle of Kent; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Aug. 6 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Federal Way. Burial will be at Gethsemane cemetery in Federal Way.
Arrangements are by Yahn and Son Funeral Home.
May, Ruth Monday, 28 Jul 2003
Ruth L. May, 86, a former Federal Way resident, died July 28.
She was born Sept. 29, 1916. She graduated in 1935 from West Seattle High School and attended two years of business college.
She worked at the Bon Marche for 19 years and was a 40-year Federal Way resident until moving to Eatonville less than three years ago.
Survivors include her children, Beverly Ruth Truva of Eatonville, Karen Sims of Billings, Mont. and Christi Bennington of Richmond, Va.; six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank.
Services were held Aug. 4. Arrangements were by Bonney-Watson Washington Memorial Funeral Home.
Kidwell, James Sunday, 27 Jul 2003
James Glenn Kidwell died July 27 in Federal Way. He was 76.
He was born Jan. 12, 1927, in Seattle and lived his entire life in the Seattle and Federal Way area. After graduating from O’Dea High School, he entered the Army and served two years in the Korean War.
He was instrumental in the formation of the Federal Way Boys and Girls Club. He served as the organization’s president. He also was a former candidate for the Washington Legislature.
He was an electrician and worked in civil service until retiring at the age of 62. During his retirement, he was devoted to caring for his wife, Shirley, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s shortly after his retirement.
Survivors include his wife; children Michael Kidwell and Melodie Grigsby; and a sister, Mary Lee.
At his request, services were private.
The family suggests memorials be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 12721 30th Ave. NE., Suite 101, Seattle, WA 98125.
Firnhaber, Hubert Saturday, 19 Jul 2003
Hubert Firnhaber, 72, church educator
Hubert (Hub) Otto Firnhaber died July 19.
He was 72.
He was born May 1, 1931, and moved to the Federal Way area in 1967.
For 26 years he worked as the Christian education director at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, established the preschool and kindergarten program, and served as a counselor until his retirement in 1993.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 46 years, Helen, of Des Moines; children Beth Lockard of Westchester, Pa., Bruce Firnhaber of Sammamish, Cari Ronish of Federal Way, Marci Ronish of Des Moines and Lori Hill of Shoreline; and 16 grandchildren.
Memorial services are set for 1 p.m. Aug. 7 at Community of Christ at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 515 S. 312th St., in Federal Way. Graveside services were held July 23 at St. Paul cemetery in Sherwood, Ore.
Memorials can be made to Charcot Marie Tooth Association or Children’s Ministries at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church.
Ford, AJ Wednesday, 16 Jul 2003
AJ Ford died July 16 at his home in Federal Way. He was 17.
Ford was to be a senior this year at Thomas Jefferson High School.
Survivors include his parents, Rick and Jean Ford; a sister, Lea Ford; a brother, Bryan Ford; and grandparents Bill and Dot Ford.
A memorial service was held July 24 at Community of Christ at St. Luke’s, with burial at Washington Memorial cemetery in SeaTac. Arrangements were by Bonney-Watson of Federal Way.

Karren, Ruth Monday, 14 Jul 2003
Ruth McKnight Karren, 85, a former Federal Way resident, died July 14 in Woodland Hills, Utah.
She was born July 27, 1917, in Lewiston, Utah. She attended high school in Richmond, Utah and married
Meldon Karren in 1939.
At the time of her death, she was a resident of Orem, Utah. She lived previously in Federal Way and Pleasanton, Calif. She was a homemaker and served four missions.
Survivors include her eight children –– Claudeen Hill and RaKell Petrini, both of Billings, Mont., Ned Karren of Bellevue, Kaye Jones of Blackfoot, Idaho, Gaylord Karren of Woodland Hills, Utah, Dale Karren of San Diego, Calif., Joel Karren of Orem and Mary Karren of Crane, Mont.; three sisters; one brother; 41 grandchilden and 49 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, four brothers and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held July 18 in Logan, Utah. Interment was at Lewiston cemetery. Arrangements were by SereniCare Funeral Directors.
Paris, John Thursday, 10 Jul 2003
John B. Paris, a longtime Federal Way resident, died on July 10. He was 69.
He was a 1952 Federal Way High School graduate and resided in Marine View Estates since 1953. He was a Teamster, driving for Auburn Packing Co., Lynch Furniture in Kent and West Coast Grocery/Super Value in Auburn and Tacoma.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Diana; children Lory Mitchell of Bothell, Jack Paris of Milton and Patrick Paris of Federal Way; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. July 17 at Calvary Lutheran Church, 2415 S. 320th St.
Miedema, Clarence Friday, 27 Jun 2003
Clarence A. Miedema, 74, died June 27 in Tacoma.
He was born Aug. 22, 1928, in South Dakota.
He retired in 1992 after 40 years with Bill Gill Lincoln-Mercury of Tacoma.
Survivors include a son, Scott Miedema; daughters Chyrll Wilson and Michelle Hofer; five brothers, two sisters, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. July 2 at Merrill Gardens in Puyallup.
Arrangements are by Powers Funeral Homes.
Pfeifer, Iola Sunday, 15 Jun 2003
Iola Pfeifer died June 15 in Federal Way. She was 82.
She was born Aug. 27, 1921 in Gordon, Neb. She married
Clair Pfeifer on Feb. 27, 1942 in Cheyenne, Wyo. She worked at Boeing during the 1950s and, with her husband, owned and operated Cristy’s Tavern in Renton in the 1960s. When they moved from Burien to Mason Lake in 1972, she opened a beauty salon and operated it until her retirement in 1984. She was a member of Mason-Benson Community Hall.
Survivors include sons Merle Pfeifer of Puyallup and Richard Pfeifer of Algona; a daughter, Lynda Blake of Kent; a brother-in-law and his wife, Leon and Margie Pfeifer of Kent; and 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow, followed by funeral services at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Bonney-Watson Washington Memorial in SeaTac.
McCarthy, Christopher Friday, 12 Sep 2003
Christopher John McCarthy died Sept. 12 at his home in Federal Way. He was 29.
He was born March 24, 1974 in Renton and graduated from Federal Way High School and Western Washingotn University. He was a computer technician.
Survivors include his parents, Larry and Linda McCarthy of Federal Way; a sister, Erin Reinhart of Seattle; and grandparents Frank and Lillian Walisch of Vancouver, Wash. and Golda McCarthy of Ferndale.
