ELIZABETH "BETTY" JANE PETERSON

Elizabeth "Betty" Jane Peterson, a Vancouver, WA resident, passed away Sept. 25, 2008, at the age of 86. She was born April 14, 1922 in Manson, WA to Donald and Georgia (Franz) Pittman.
Betty retired from working at Bemis.
She was a member of Grace Baptist Church.
She loved to garden and fish and especially loved her family.
"Mom loved to bake and was always doing for other people.
Mom never knew a stranger."
Betty is survived by her son, Jerry (Debra) Peterson of S. Carolina; daughters, Donna Peterson, Shirley Garrett, Georgia Peterson and Bonnie Womack, all of Vancouver; sisters, Janet of Yakima, WA and Evelyn of Cle Elum, WA; brothers, Harold and Lowell of Manson, WA and Kendall of Chelan, WA; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Anton "Tony" Peterson; and son, Gustav Peterson.
A viewing will be held Wed., Oct. 1, 2008, 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Evergreen Staples, 4700 St. Johns Road with the memorial services to be held there on Thurs., Oct. 2, 2008 at 10:00 a.m.

CONNIE RAE HENRY

Connie Henry, age 56, of Washougal, WA passed away on Friday, Sept. 26, 2008 at the Ray Hickey Hospice House, while holding the hand of her loving husband with her loving family at her side, after a courageous four-year battle with Breast Cancer. She was born in Vancouver, WA on Nov. 9, 1951 to the wonderful parents of Robert (Bob) and Melanie (Mary) Denton.
Connie and her brother, Craig were raised in Washougal and are graduates of Washougal High School. After graduation Connie and her childhood friend, Corolyn attended and graduated from Western Business College.
Her career of over 30 years took her to become a Patient Registration Supervisor at SWWMC, where she took tremendous pride in providing priceless care to families that SWWMC serviced.
She was the strongest link in her families lives, that will NEVER be forgotten. Connie's strong sense of independence and strength will forever be with us. Connie was devoted to her husband, her family, dogs, home and gardening.
Connie is survived by Patrick Henry, her husband of nine years; and their dogs; loving mother, Melanie Denton; and brother, Craig Denton. All her family members; Robert and Harriet Peterson and their family, David and Cerina Goad, Susan Secor, Pam Denton, Michelle Denton, Brayden Denton, Patricia (Trish) Bleth, Drew Wilkins, Devyn Busby and Logan Wilkins.
She was preceded in death by Steven Peterson, her 1st husband of over 20 years; and her loving father, Robert Denton.
A graveside service will held Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. at the Washougal Memorial cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Straub's Funeral Home and Columbia River Cremation in Camas. John D. McGraw
February 13, 1924 ~ September 26, 2008
John D. McGraw passed away on September 26, 2008 in Vancouver, WA at the age of 84. He was born February 13, 1924 in Torrance, CA, to Dee and Carrie McGraw. After working in the shipyards in the early 1940’s, John joined the Army Air Corps and logged more than 600 hours of flight time over enemy territory.
After the war, John began a lifelong career in telecommunications. John married
Velma (Jean) Simms in 1948. John and Jean’s first home was in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
John moved to Alaska in the early 1960’s, where he continued work in telecommunications and real estate investments.
John loved fishing and skiing, and he could often be found at his cabin in Girdwood, Alaska, celebrating and recuperating from a day on the slopes with a host of friends and family.
John moved to Vancouver, WA, in the early 1980’s, which became his beloved final home of comfort and retirement. As a deeply religious man, John was an active Gideon, and benefactor of numerous Christian charities. He devoted both time and money to the Breaking Free organization, which helped former prisoners make the difficult transition back into productive life.
John McGraw is survived by his wife, his two children David and Stacey, his six grandchildren, and one grandchild.

MICHAEL K. REDD
May 8, 1958 ~ Sept. 26, 2008
Michael K. Redd of Vancouver, WA, passed away on September 26, 2008 at the age of 50.
Mike leaves behind his beloved wife, Veronica. They were married
in 1985, and have two sons, Andrew who attends Portland State University and Matthew who attends Washington State University. Mike is also survived by his parents, Bob and Sharon Redd of Woodland, WA; two brothers, Bob Redd, Jr. and Erin Redd, of Vancouver, WA, David and Angela Redd of Woodland, WA; and his sister, Jennifer and Corey Sanderford, of Tacoma, WA; also by many nieces and nephews.
Mike worked at Comcast Cable for most of his adult life.
He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, where he was active in the Knights of Columbus, past Grand Knight and a Cub and Boy Scout Leader.
Mike loved his family, martial arts, camping, hunting, fishing, golf and playing Texas Hold 'Em.
Mike's rosary and vigil service will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. The funeral Mass will be held on Friday, October 3, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. also at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 4701 NW Franklin, Vancouver, WA, 98663. Reception to immediately follow.

Burial service will be a private family event following the reception.
GENE "JAKE" L. JACOBSEN
Sept. 23, 1931-Sept. 25, 2008
Gene L. Jacobsen of Vancouver, WA passed away on September 25, 2008 at the age of 77. He was born Sept. 23, 1931 in Helena, Montana to Kathleen and Harry Jacobsen. He had one sibling, Betty Joann.
Before retiring, Gene was a foreman at ALCOA.
He loved fishing, camping, landscaping, and travel.
In his earlier years, he raised horses and was once a member of the Clark County Sheriff's Posse.
Survivors include daughters, Debra Amundson and Carrie Kennedy; step-children, Gary Christensen and Laura Wenrick; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to his memorial service at Evergreen Memorial Gardens on Friday, October 3, 2008 at 12:30 p.m. A gathering will be held at Jollie's Restaurant following the service.
David Allen Patterson
August 30, 1937 ~ September 26, 2008
David Allen Patterson died September 26th, 2008 at the age of 71 in his Ridgefield home. David was a devoted husband, father, and grand-father. David was born in Bonners Ferry, Idaho on August 30, 1937. He was a builder of highways and homes, of families and memories. He was most at home doing landscaping around his home and around the homes of folks who could no longer do their own yards. Dave is survived by his loving wife, Gayle; and his two courageous daughters: Kelli (husband Doug Findlay) and Diana (husband Scott Thurman); and his three beloved grand-children: Michael David Findlay, Sarah Gayle Thurman, and Scott Patterson Thurman. Although he lost his battle with cancer, Dave won the war through the love of his Lord, and Savior.

Jean L. Womelsdorff of Vancouver, WA, passed away on Sept. 23, 2008 at age 88.
She was born Dec. 2, 1919, in Portland, OR.
She graduated from Franklin High School.
LILLIAN TAVARES
June 12, 1927 ~ Sept. 19, 2008
Lillian Tavares, age 81, passed away on Friday morning, Sept. 19, 2008 at her home in Vancouver, WA with her family by her side. She was born June 12, 1927 in Providence R.I., the daughter of Thomas William Lawson and Annie Mae Ferry.
Lillian married
Joseph Tavares September 13, 1947 in Providence and the marriage lasted 61 years. Just a few days after their marriage they followed her brother-in-law out to the West Coast.
Lillian possessed a compassion for those less fortunate in life and truly appreciated her own good fortune. She never knew a stranger and was warm and friendly to everyone she met.
She suffered from severe rheumatoid arthritis in later life but bore it with humor and determination.
Her strength was an inspiration to everyone who knew her.
Lillian was a loving wife, mother and nana to her family.
Lillian is survived by her husband, Joseph Tavares; daughter, Sandy Gretsch of Vancouver; son and daughter-in-law, David and Vicki Tavares of Federal Way, WA; son, Joseph M. Tavares of Vancouver; grandchildren, Gina Gretsch of Vancouver, Melissa Tavares of Vancouver, Eric Tavares of Salem, OR and Kevin Tavares of Spokane, WA; two great-grandchildren; sister, Merle Almeida of Denver, CO; brother, Thomas "Sonny" Lawson of E. Providence R.I.; and half-sisters, Dorothy Harris and Ellen Hayes.
She was preceded in death by her half-brother, Edward Rose; and half-sister, Gladys.
A private family service will be held.

COURTNEY BACKSTROM
Nov. 25, 1926 ~ May 4, 2008-
Courtney W. Backstrom of Vancouver, WA, passed away on May 4, 2008 at the age of 81. He was born in Kulm, ND on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25, 1926 to Victor and Tina Backstrom.
Courtney served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict as a crew chief on fighter jets.
He retired from the Vancouver Fire Department in 1976.
Courtney bravely battled a multitude of health issues for some time, always keeping his sense of humor-that twinkle in his eye and a smile on his face.
He took great pride in his family and their accomplishments. They came first with him. He was truly the light in our lives. With him in a room, everything seemed brighter. Anyone who met him always remembered him. He knew no strangers.
His love of sports was legendary, reading the sports section every morning right to the last day and a dedicated spectator at his children's and grandchildren's sporting events.
Courtney was an avid fisherman who could be depended on to catch the 1st, the most and often the biggest fish.
He enjoyed traveling, visiting Canada, Mexico and many areas of the U.S. including Alaska and Hawaii.
Courtney is survived by his wife, Louise, married
59 years, 8 months and 1 day; daughter, Lori Blocker of Portland, OR; sons, Bruce Backstrom of Portland, OR, Guy (Becky) Backstrom of Sammamish, WA; grandchildren, Adam Elliott of Portland, OR, Hayley (Tyler) Drimmel of Honolulu, HI, Reid and Keiley Backstrom of Sammamish, WA; brothers, Melvin Beckstrom of Vancouver, WA, Willard Backstrom of Vancouver, WA; sisters, Grace Bradford of Vancouver, WA and Dorene Rightenour of Vancouver, WA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Victor and Tina Backstom; sisters, Esther Scoggin and Lucile Bjerke; and granddaughter, Brianne Blocker.
There will be a private committal with military honors at Willamette National cemetery.
