Nishimori, Tairoku Friday, 10 May 2002 Bainbridge Island Review Bainbridge Island, WA
Lifelong Bainbridge Island resident Tairoku “Tike” Nishimori, age 85, died May 10.
He was born on Bainbridge on Feb. 18, 1917 to Kirohachi and Tsue (Hamasaki) Nishimori.
In 1936, he graduated from Bainbridge High School where he played football and basketball. As a young adult, he taught judo and competed in tournaments, attaining fourth-degree black belt honors.
He was interned at Manzanar from April 1942 until August 1943. In September 1943, he married Chizuko Matsuno in Glen Ellyn, Ill.
He spent most of his career as a television technician, retiring in 1983 from North Star Cable in Seattle.
He enjoyed bowling, mushroom hunting, fishing, outings with the Senior Center and other outdoor activities, and operated a small Christmas tree farm.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Chizuko of Bainbridge; son Richard of Bellevue; daughters Janice Nishimori of Bellevue and Jean Divine of Bainbridge; son-in-law Jim Divine of Bainbridge; five sisters, Masako (Kim) Muromoto, Bellevue, Kiyoko Mazie of Bloomington, Minn., Suiko (Robert) Yonemitsu of Sedro Woolley, Matsue (Samuel) Watanabe of Seattle and Shimako “Sally” (Tom) Kitano of Puyallup; and many nieces and nephews.
Family services were held, and remembrances can be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements were under the direction of Kass Funeral Home.

Chanak, Adam G.S. Chanak Wednesday, 08 May 2002 Bainbridge Island Review Bainbridge Island, WA
Bainbridge resident Adam G.S. Chanak, age 48, died May 8 in Seattle.
He was born in Duluth, Minn. and lived in northern Minnesota until 1973.
He graduated magna cum laude from E. Washington University in Cheney, Wash. in 1978 and from Gonzaga University School of Law in Spokane, Wash. in 1983.
Adam was a practicing attorney in Washington state for the past nineteen years. He was a member of many professional associations and served as Chair of the Section on International Practice of the Washington State Bar Association from 2000-2001.
He fluently spoke five languages, enjoyed sailing, playing the viola and piano, was an avid writer, and held a lifelong interest in theology. He was an active member of Saint Spiridon Orthodox Cathedral in Seattle.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George (Donna) Chanak of Minnesota; sister, Helen Chanak of Eden Prairie, Minn.; and uncle, aunts, and cousins in Minnesota.
An Orthodox memorial service or Panikhida will be held 11:15 a.m. June 16 at St. Spiridon Orthodox Cathedral in Seattle. Father Vadim Pogrebniak will officiate. Private Eastern Orthodox services and burial were held in Minnesota.
Memorials may be given to Saint Spiridon Orthodox Cathedral, 400 Yale Ave. N., Seattle, WA. 98109 attention Father Vadim Pogrebniak, or to the Humane Society. Messages for the family may be sent to Helen Chanak, 6530 Kingfisher Lane, Eden Prairie, MN 55346.

Funke, Jerrold Wednesday, 08 May 2002 Bainbridge Island Review Bainbridge Island, WA
Jerrold Funke, age 57, died May 8 at his Bainbridge residence.
He was born Feb. 22, 1945 in Bremerton, to Theodore and Zelma (Krafczik) Funke.
Following graduation from West Bremerton High School in 1963, he joined the Army and served two tours of duty in Vietnam in the infantry and as a helicopter pilot, earning the Bronze Star and Air Medal.
His civilian career spanned more than 25 years in the real estate industry.
In 1996, he changed direction and began work in the maritime industry in boat detailing, yacht sales and as a shipwright with the Boat Company in Poulsbo. Ill health forced him to retire in January 2001.
He enjoyed sailing his boat, the Cayenne, cooking for friends and family and watching the Mariners.
He was preceded in death by is son Aaron in 1990. He is survived by his friend and partner, Sue Fowler, and her children, Molly Nettlebeck of Seattle; Joshua and Billie Nettlebeck of Poulsbo; Sue’s mother, Margaret Fowler of Bainbridge Island; his daughter Lelaine (John) Keith and children Arianna, Noah and Carrie; and two brothers, Dennis Funke of Federal Way and William Funke of Spokane.
A celebration of his life will be held 1-4 p.m. June 23 at Seabold Hall. Remembrances may be made to Hospice of Kitsap County.
Arrangements were under the direction of Kass Funeral Home.

Lindberg, Capt. Timothy Drew Tuesday, 07 May 2002 Bainbridge Island Review Bainbridge Island, WA
Bainbridge resident Capt. Timothy Drew Lindberg, age 44, died May 7.
He was born on Staten Island, N.J. to Howard and Patricia (Kerr) Lindberg. After graduating from Mendham High School in New Jersey in 1976, he attended Maine Marititme Academy, where he graduated in 1980.
He sailed offshore for nearly 10 years, earning an unlimited ocean masters license.
In 1989 he moved to Bainbridge Island and joined the Washington State Ferries, where he was employed until his death.
His hobbies included beekeeping, making stained glass and enjoying the outdoors.
He is survived by his wife Lane of Bainbridge Island; son Teddy of new Jersey; parents Howard and Patricia Lindberg; sister Kerrie (Gayle Anders); five nephews and one niece.
A memorial service was held May 18 on Bainbridge Island.

Adams, Donald Paul Thursday, 02 May 2002 Bainbridge Island Review Bainbridge Island, WA
Donald Paul Adams, age 88, died May 2 at Hospice House in Anderson, S.C.
Born in Johnstown, Penn., he was a graduate of Penn State University and was a member of Phi Psi fraternity.
He led a distinguished career as a Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent in New York City before retiring to Sun City, Ariz.
He and his wife, Martha Paulson Adams, enjoyed travel, astronomy and hiking.
In 2000, he moved to the Inn At Seneca in Seneca, S.C.
He is survived by children Susan Brown of Seneca, S.C., Sally Richard of Bainbridge and James R. Adams of Lititz, Penn; grandchildren Lora Miles, Richard and Steven Brown, Tracy Noble, and Elizabeth and Woody Adams; and great-grandchildren Stephanie and Courtney Miles, Alexander Brown and Maggie Noble.
He was preceded in death by his wife.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Seneca Presbyterian Church in Seneca, S.C.

Hebert, Gertrude Wednesday, 01 May 2002 Bainbridge Island Review Bainbridge Island, WA
Gertrude Hebert age 79, died on May 1 at the Madison Avenue Retirement Center.
She was born in 1922, daughter of Leon Gerald Stickney.
She graduated from Toppenish High School in 1940. She received a bachelor’s degree in education and a bachelor of science degree in nursing from University of Portland in 1944, later obtaining a master’s degree in nursing at Central Washington University.
She and her husband, Dr. James F. Hebert, moved to Yakima in 1951, where they raised seven children.
She taught nursing at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital School of Nursing and at Yakima Valley College for 15 years.
She served on the boards of Catholic charities, the Comprehensive Mental Health Services Board and on the National League For Nursing Accreditation, where she was responsible for reviewing practical nursing programs throughout the country. She also served a three-year term with the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges.
She was an active volunteer for Hospice in Yakima, Wash.
As a resident of Bainbridge, she was an active member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church and was an enthusiastic volunteer with the Blakely school “Study Buddies” program.
She is survived by her children, Susan Hebert, David Hebert and Richard Hebert, all of Seattle, James Hebert of Wenatchee, JoAnne Fiander of Bainbridge Island, Patty Agnew of Bellevue, and Barbara Hebert of Orcas Island, and grandchildren Patrick and Alexa Fiander, Meagan Wynne, Caitlin and Nic Agnew, Scot and Tod Hebert.
Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. May 4 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Hospice of Kitsap County and the Kitsap Humane Society.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home, Bainbridge Island.

Mann, Annamarie “Mia” Geist Thursday, 22 May 2003 Bainbridge Island Review Bainbridge Island, WA
Annamarie “Mia” Geist Mann, age 89, of Bainbridge Island, died May 22 at her home.
She was born Dec. 6, 1913 in Minneapolis, Minn., to Emil Geist and Augusta Ohage.
She attended Carleton College, and graduated in 1935 from the University of Minnesota. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
She studied at the University of Munich, then trained at Massachusetts General Hospital in the treatment of dyslexic children.
Before moving to Seattle, she and her husband, Frederick M. Mann, made their home in Cambridge, Mass., San Francisco, Calif., and in Marin County, Calif.
In 1954 they moved to Seattle, where he served as university architect.
She developed a lasting interest in the beauty of her adopted city. She initiated and helped realize the Seattle Street Tree program and the summer monthly Bicycle Sunday program.
She served on the Municipal Art Commission’s (now the Seattle Arts Commission) Street Beautification Committee, as well as on Forward Thrust. She was an active board member of the Lighthouse for the Blind, the World Affairs Council, the Citizens’ Planning Committee, Historic Seattle and the Street Tree Advisory Board. She was a member of the Sunset Club, the Elizabeth Fischer Orthopedic Guild, and the Committee of 33.
The Manns moved to Bainbridge Island in 1976.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years in April 2002. She is survived by children Grace M. Smith, Mary M. Gregory, Frederick T. and Richard E. Mann; and five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
At her request, no service will be held. Remembrances may be made to the Children’s Orthopedic Hospital and Medical Center Summer Camp Programs.

Lindsey, Robert Dalton Pawsey Wednesday, 21 May 2003 Bainbridge Island Review Bainbridge Island, WA
Robert Dalton Pawsey Lindsey III, age 66, died May 21 at his Bainbridge Island home. He was born March 20, 1937 in Ketchikan, Alaska.

Rose, Yvonne Marie Tuesday, 13 May 2003 Bainbridge Island Review Bainbridge Island, WA
Yvonne Marie Rose, 56, of Bainbridge Island died May 13.
She was born Sept. 17, 1946 in Portland, Ore.
She lived in Bend. Ore., for 15 years, working at St. Charles Hospital as a radiology technician. She also worked at the University of Washington Medical Center as a student advisor in the X-ray department.
She was an active member of the National Ski Patrol on Mt. Bachelor in Bend, and a fine skier.
She served on the board of directors of the local theater group and founded the Amici Club, a local heritage group for Italians.
She and her husband Michael lived and cruised aboard their 42-foot sailboat for five years, exploring Alaska, Mexico, Central America, South America, the Caribbean and the East Coast before illness ended their voyage.
They then settled on Bainbridge Island, because it reminded them of their peaceful life aboard the sailboat.
She is survived by husband Michael Road and son Matthew Rose; mother Henrietta Cereghino; brother Michael Cereghino; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Blackmon, Helen S. Monday, 12 May 2003 Bainbridge Island Review Bainbridge Island, WA
Bainbridge Island resident Helen S. Blackmon, age 83, died May 12 at Island Health and Rehabilitation.
She was born Oct. 12, 1919, in Denver, Colo., to Gustavus and Mabel (Wortham) Sessinghaus.
She graduated from Barnard College in New York City and earned a master’s degree at Patterson State Teachers College in New Jersey.
She then embarked on a career in elementary education. She taught in Little Ferry, N.J. in the early 1960s and taught English as a Second Language until 1970.
When her first husband, John Williams, Jr., died in 1975, she ran his insurance agency for the next 10 years.
In 1985, she married William A. Blackmon, Jr. and they lived in Manhattan until his death in 2000.
During their years of marriage, they traveled extensively; Helen successfully traced her family tree back to England in 1600; immersed herself in the cultural offerings of New York where she was a member of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Natural History; and held memberships in the Daughters of the American Revolution and Daughters of the Confederacy.
She is survived by one daughter, Ann Cook, and one son, John Williams III, both of Bainbridge Island; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
At the family’s request, no memorial services will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home.
