Anderson, Elmer Donald Tuesday, 13 Dec 2005
Island native Elmer Donald Anderson, 91, died Dec. 13 at Martha and Mary Nursing Home in Poulsbo.
He was born March 13, 1914, at Port Blakely on Bainbridge Island. He attended the Port Blakely school as a child, and Toe Jam Hill was his playground.
He worked at the Winslow Shipyard during World War II, and for many years at the South Beach Country Club as the caretaker until his retirement in the 1980s.
He had an excellent memory and liked sharing stories of Port Blakely. He was interviewed several times by the historical society. He enjoyed “tinkering” and always had a project to work on.
He spent his whole life in the family home at Port Blakely until a few years ago, when he moved to Liberty Shores retirement home and then Martha and Mary until his death.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Howard. He is survived by his cousins Bernice Bradley of Seattle, Bill (Sue) Minster of Seattle and Larry Minster of Hansville.
A graveside service will be held this spring, with interment among other family members at Port Blakely cemetery.
Enright, Vera Agnes Sunday, 18 Dec 2005
Vera Agnes Enright, 102, died Dec. 18 at her Bainbridge Island home.
She was born April 7, 1903, in Chicago, Ill., to Francis and Agnes Enright and went to public school there.
In the 1930s, she worked for Curtis Publishing, a magazine publishing house, in Chicago. She was sent by the company to be office manager at its New York office in the then-new Rockefeller Center, and she vividly remembered seeing each Rockettes show.
She moved away from Chicago for family reasons to Anchorage, Alaska, and was active in the Grandmother’s Club there.
She moved to Sequim in 1984 and lived in various places on the Olympic Peninsula, coming to Bainbridge Island about 10 years ago.
She had a fantastic memory, and at one time was a national trivia contest winner, receiving cars, radios, furs and a yacht.
She is survived by her nephew Bud (Mary) Enright of Merrimack Port, Mass., and related Enrights of Chicago.
At her request there will be no services. She will be cremated and interred in Chicago in the cemetery with her parents.

Wonders, Eileen M. Tuesday, 13 Dec 2005
Eileen Mildred Wonders died Dec. 13 in Seattle at the age of 83.
She was born on July 30, 1922 to John Olander and Irene Wallace.
She was a native of Longmont, Colo. and a resident of Poulsbo for 22 years.
She was a faithful member of the First Lutheran Church in Poulsbo. She was Worthy Grand Matron of the Eastern Star from 1982-1983 and served as a Gray Lady for the Red Cross in Europe.
She was an avid quilter and knitter. She also enjoyed being with her family and playing piano and golf.
She is survived by her husband, Glenn Wonders of Poulsbo; her daughter, Glenda Specht and her husband Tom of Puyallup; her brother, John Olander of Columbus, Neb.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Dec. 22 at the First Lutheran Church, 18920 Fourth Ave. NE in Poulsbo.

Criss, Sherry A. Sunday, 11 Dec 2005
Sherry A. Criss, 68, of Bainbridge Island died Dec. 11.
She was born Oct. 29, 1937, in Washington, and was a Bainbridge Island resident for the last 15 years.
She was a pioneer in visual merchandising, a world traveler and a gourmet cook.
She is survived by two daughters, Tammie Zilkey and Crystal Vaarvik; and grandchildren Kari, Austin, Rilee and Michala, all of Gig Harbor.

McGaughy, Alice Josephine Monday, 05 Dec 2005
Former Bainbridge Island resident Alice Josephine (Vildmo) McGaughy, 86, died Dec. 5.
She was born July 8, 1919, in Wafted City, N.D., to Norwegian immigrants Peter and Matte Vildmo. She was the youngest of four daughters. She sang in the church and school choirs, including a school trio group. She was a cheerleader and participated in gymnastics.
In 1939 she moved to Tacoma and attended Pacific Lutheran College. She later transferred to Washington State University, where she met Jack McGaughy. They were married
in 1941.
They lived in various parts of the country, including Seattle, Mercer Island and Tacoma, and on three separate occasions, Schenectady, N.Y. In 1962 they moved to Bainbridge Island, where they lived for 37 years, before moving to Spokane in 1999.
She was preceded in death by her husband in June of this year. She is survived by sister Margaret of Bellingham; sons Michael (Connie) and Dennis (Liz), both of Spokane, and Scott (Vicki) of Graham, Wash.; grandchildren Sasha (Bill), Casey, Mitzie, Joshua (Amber), Josie-Lynne, Bryan (Charlotte), Brad, Brett and Brooke; and great-grandchildren, Taylor and Sydney.

Arambula, Raul ‘Rocky’ Friday, 02 Dec 2005
Raul “Rocky” Arambula, 77, died Dec. 2 at his Bainbridge Island home.
He was born March 7, 1928, in Detroit, Mich., to Christopher Arambula and Maria Ayala.
He was a World War II veteran and had lived on the island since 1999.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Arambula; stepchildren Don Muridan of Tacoma, Dawn Muridan of Kona, Hawaii, and Diona Thompson of Lakewood; nephew Rod Varney of Stamford, Conn.; and siblings, Kim Varney of Stamford, Conn., and Jimmy Randall of Chicago, Ill.

Monk, Anna Mary Saturday, 10 Dec 2005
Anna Mary Monk, 96, died Dec. 10 at Hearthstone Retirement Home in Seattle.
She was born Oct. 11, 1909, in Pauls Valley, Okla., to Clinton R. and Cora Etoile Gantz. The family moved to Ferndale, Wash., around 1916-18.
She married
George Edwin Monk in 1941. They lived in Seattle and weekended on Bainbridge Island until 1951, when they settled at Port Madison. She moved to the Hearthstone in 1988 to be near her daughter.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Seabold Orthopedic Guild and was known for her artistic hooked rugs and knitting.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Monk; her brother, Robert Gantz; and her daughters Josephine (Nate) Helman and Judy (Larry) Wade.
She is survived by her daughter Isabel Monk Mays Van Valey; son Robert Edwin (Dora) Monk; 12 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
Private family services will be held with arrangements by Evergreen-Washelli. Contributions may be made to the Children’s Orthopedic Hospital or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Schwede, Henry Julius Friday, 09 Dec 2005
Henry Julius Schwede, 95, died Dec. 9 at the Wyatt House with his family and friends by his side.
He was born Jan. 1, 1910, in Willamette, Ore. His family later moved north to homestead in Saskatchewan, Canada.
He returned to the United States in 1937 and married
Lucille Gernet in 1939.
He worked for Boeing Aircraft Co. in Seattle for 33 years as a master machinist. He was a member of two Masonic lodges.
Lucille died in 1973. He married
Irene Maas in 1976 and moved to Bainbridge Island two years later. Irene died in 1997.
He is survived by his step-son, John (Frances) Elmore, of Anchorage, Alaska; step-daughter Mary K. Neuer of Bainbridge Island; his stepgrandsons John Elmore Jr., of Oregon, Stephen Carow of Olympia and Paul Carow of Seattle; granddaughter Denali of Anchorage, Alaska; and great-grandchildren Aaron, Kevin, Annaka, Callan and August.
Visitation was Dec. 14 at the Bainbridge Masonic Lodge on Grow Avenue followed by a funeral service. Graveside services were that day at Washington Memorial Park in Sea-Tac.

Johnson, Keith V. Tuesday, 24 Jan 2006
Keith V. Johnson, 87, of Poulsbo died Jan. 24 at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Nov. 29, 1918 on a farm in Soldier, Kan., to Walter and Elsie (Starr) Johnson.
He attended business college in Topeka, then moved to California after school and served in the Navy during World War II.
He bought interest in Eastman Oil Well Survey Co., which did directional drilling in Long Beach, Calif. After that he worked for 20 years as an auditor for the State of California, eventually retiring as district tax administrator.
He married
Mary Beth Manuel Huguley on July 11, 1952 in North Long Beach, and adopted Mary Beth’s daughter, Peggy.
He was active in the Masonic Lodge, Order of the Eastern Star, Shrine and Scottish Rite organizations from 1961 until his death.
He and his wife moved to Washington in 1994, and he became active in and joined the First Lutheran Church in Poulsbo.
He was preceeded in death by his sister, Eunice Sproul of Kansas. He is survived by his wife, Mary Beth; daughter, Peggy (Ron) Booth; three grandchildren, Patrick (Annette) Booth of Acme, Wash., Heathere Booth (Jeff) Cericola of Bainbridge Island, and Michael (Doreen) Booth of Kirkland; great-grandchildren Christopher Cericola, Alexa Cericola and Gabriel Booth; sister Alta Conner of Kansas; brother-in-law Lyle Sproul of Kansas; sister-in-law Pauline Spoelstra of Colorado; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Jan. 29 at First Lutheran Church on Fourth Street in Poulsbo. Services will be at 11 a.m. Jan. 30 at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shriners Crippled Children’s Hospital in Portland, Ore.

Lundgren, Della J. Monday, 23 Jan 2006
Della J. Lundgren, 80, died on Jan. 23 at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle.
She was born June 3, 1925 in South Dakota to Peter J. Eberhard and Ottilia Biederstedt.
She was a resident of Bainbridge Island for 40 years, and was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church on Bainbridge. She enjoyed baking, cooking and gardening.
Her husband, Kenneth Lundgren, died in 1989. She is survived by her daughter, Diane Udell, of Bainbridge Island; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Gyger, Gladys M. Wednesday, 18 Jan 2006
Gladys Marie Teeling Gyger died Jan. 18 on Bainbridge Island. She was 101, and a survivor of two cancers for more than 20 years.
She was born to George and Blanche Currie on Aug. 17, 1904 in Chicago, Ill. She was adopted as a baby by George and Laura Montague and came to Washington in 1905.
She lived in Rhyolite, Nev., and Tonopah, Nev., for a few years before returning to Kingston when she was 7 years old.
She married
James Teeling in 1924 and lived on a farm by George’s Corner.
They had six children: Margaret Jeanne Smith of Bainbridge Island, Beverly (Victor) Clough of Poulsbo, Laura Lee Johnson of Silverdale, Robert (Marian) Teeling of Palmer, Alaska, Dorothy Teeling of Seattle and son James Teeling, who died in 1951.
Her husband died in 1954. She married
Lew Hopkins in 1955 and he died in 1958; she then married
Irvin Gyger in 1960, and he died in 1993. Survivors include her five children, 16 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and 32 great-great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 29 at Eagle Harbor Congregational Church on Bainbridge Island. Memorials may be sent to a favorite charity.
