Friedrich, Nancy Muller Tuesday, 24 Jun 2003
Longtime islander Nancy Muller Friedrich, age 60, died June 24 at Swedish Medical Center, Seattle.
She was born Jan. 19, 1943 in San Francisco to Dr. Charles D. Muller and Esther (Cornwell) Muller.
After graduating from West Bremerton High School in 1961, she attended the University of Washington, graduating in 1965 with a bachelor’s degree in history.
In 1969, she completed her master’s degree in business and hospital administration at George Washington University in Washington D.C.
She served her residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
She married Paul A. Friedrich in February 1968.
For 12 years she was assistant administrator at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle, where she set up the first day care program for employees’ children, created home-like obstetrical services and invited nurse midwives to deliver babies at the hospital.
She was named one of 100 Seattle Newsmakers of Tomorrow by the Seattle Chamber of Commerce in 1978. In 1981, she was awarded a Crosby Fellowship from the American Hospital Association to study teenage health care among hospitals and community agencies.
In 1981, she established her own health care consulting firm. During the next 20 years she provided consulting services to hospitals and health care administrators throughout the United States.
In 1987 the New Zealand Institute of Health Administrators invited her to New Zealand to write a national plan for delivery of health services.
She was a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, conducting workshops to help other hospital executives – especially women – gain fellowship in the prestigious group.
Her professional skills in diplomacy carried into her personal life, and she gave freely of her time and hand-made gifts. She was an accomplished seamstress, gardener and interior decorator.
She was a 33-year resident of Bainbridge Island, enjoying both the rural lifestyle and views of the Seattle skyline from her several residences.
In the early 1990s, she worked with others to create the all-island City of Bainbridge Island.
“She was very visionary in recognizing the needs of the island, very generous with her time, efforts and ideas, ” said former mayor Dwight Sutton. “She was a behind-the-scenes force to crystallize concerns and press people to move forward.”
In recent years she found pleasure in creating beadwork necklaces and other jewelry to sell at the Bainbridge Island Farmers Market. She served as market manager in 1999.
In 1987, she began running marathons, raising thousands of dollars for Providence Home Health Care and other charities over the next few years.
She is survived by her children, Jennifer Mary Friedrich and Michael Joseph Friedrich, both of Seattle. She is also survived by her mother, Esther Muller, Bremerton; two brothers and their spouses, Charles and Eileen Muller, Poulsbo, and Barrie and Jeri Muller, Bremerton; three sisters and their spouses, Donna Copley and Pete Simpson, Seabeck; and Pam and Roy Campbell and Liz and Ken Lauzen, Bremerton; and 25 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Charles D. Muller, M.D.

Indridson, Marian Agnes Friday, 22 Aug 2003
Marian Agnes Indridson, age 96, of Bainbridge Island, died Aug. 22 at Island Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born Oct. 18, 1906, in Nelson, British Columbia, Canada to Henry George Lincoln and Margaret Emily Hawes Lincoln.
In 1931, she married Herman J. Indridson in Vancouver, B.C.
She became a U.S. citizen on a 100-degree day in July of 1941, on the steps of the Seattle courthouse.
During the war years, she helped sell U.S. savings bonds in front of the old Woolworth store in downtown Seattle.
In 1948, she and her husband purchased property on Ferncliff, where she resided for over 50 years.
She was a 78-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star; a past Grand Royal Matron and 68-year member of the Order of the Amaranth; a 58-year member of the Daughters of the Nile; served twice as President of the Bainbridge Island Garden Club; and was one of the original founders of the North Kitsap Rhododendron Society.
She is survived by her daughter, Marian McArthur of Bainbridge, with whom she enjoyed many world travels. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1978.
At her request, no services will be held. Memorials may be given to the Bainbridge Island Garden Club for the planting of flowers on her beloved island.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Wiggen and Sons of Seattle.

Nelson, Jacob Bain Sunday, 10 Aug 2003
Jacob Bain Nelson, age 18, of Bainbridge Island, died Aug. 10 near Quilcene in Jefferson County.
He was born to Bruce and Susan Kerrigan Nelson on Nov. 6, 1984, in Boston, Mass., where he lived for the first six years of his life.
When his family moved to Bainbridge Island in 1990, he attended Wilkes Elementary School, Woodward Middle School and Hyla Middle School.
After attending the Lowell Whiteman School in Colorado, he returned to Bainbridge Island where he graduated from Bainbridge High School this past June.
He was an accomplished gymnast who competed at the national level, and taught gymnastics for the Bainbridge Island Park and Recreation District. He was also an expert wakeboarder, snowboarder and skateboarder.
He was a world traveler who did volunteer work with children in China and Nepal. He visited Mexico and numerous Caribbean Islands where he became a certified scuba diver. He had just returned home from a trip to Europe with his friends and family.
He was known for his personality and caring nature, his sparkling eyes and smile, and the ability to make everyone around him laugh.
He is survived by his mother Susan Kerrigan Nelson of Bainbridge Island; brother Zachary and sister Sophie Nelson; grandmothers Lena Kerrigan of Bainbridge Island and Dorothy Nelson of Providence, R.I.; aunts and uncles Pat Kerrigan, Sue and John Kerrigan of Bainbridge Island, Sheila and Robert Greenbaum of Providence, R.I., Deborah Nelson and James Pratt of Rockport, Mass.; cousins, Katrina and Haley Kerrigan of Bainbridge Island, Cara and Nicholas Pratt of Rockport, Mass., Todd and Wendy Greenbaum of Providence, R.I., and Stephanie Skultety of Tiverton, R.I.; and family friend Bryan Garoutte.
He was preceded in death by his father, Bruce Nelson, and grandfathers Jack Kerrigan and Walter Nelson.
A funeral service will at 1 p.m. Aug. 16 at Seabold Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made to to the Jacob Bain Nelson Memorial Fund c/o Bainbridge High School, 9330 NE High School Road, Bainbridge Island, WA 98110.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home, Bainbridge Island.

Price, Stanley Milford Wednesday, 06 Aug 2003
Former Bainbridge Island resident Stanley Milford Price of Poulsbo died Aug. 6. He was 79.
Price was born to Mary Lucinda and Robert Marshall Price on June 22, 1924 in Govan.
He married Bertha Thompson Feb. 2, 1950 in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho.
Price graduated from high school in Wilbur in 1943.
He worked as an auto mechanic and a farmer on Bainbridge Island and in eastern Washington.
He served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific theater from 1943-1945.
He enjoyed reading, gardening, playing pinochle and fixing things.
He is survived by his wife Bertha Price of Poulsbo; sons John Marshall Price (Judi Anne Burch) of Indianola and Stanley Michael Price of Vancouver; daughters Carol Anne Price (John G. Townsend) of Poulsbo and Judy Louise (Michael Stephen) Stebbins of Troutdale, Ore.; brother Dale (Darlene) Price of Electric City; sisters Ruth (Woody) Thurlow of Downey, Calif., Peggy Johnson of Burns, Ore., Wanda (Lawrence) Flood of Pullman and Martha Nordhagen of Issaquah; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and five sisters.
A family gathering was held in Poulsbo.
Memorial gifts may be made to a charity of choice.

Bonifield, Thomas Robbins Tuesday, 18 May 2004
Dr. Thomas Robbins Bonifield, age 61, died of cancer May 18.
He was born July 1, 1942 in Evansville, Ind.
He prepared for vocational church service at the Vancouver School of Theology, Seattle University School of Theology and Ministry and the Olympia Diocesan School of Theology. His field education was with the Episcopal Maritime Ministry where he served as associate director. He also earned a BS from the Indiana University School of Medicine and a master’s and doctorate degrees in philosophy at the Pennsylvania State University Graduate School.
He was commissioned as an officer in the United States Public Health Service in 1966.
While on active duty, he served initially as an environmental health officer for indigenous Alaskan communities; his duty included the development and presentation of field environmental health service delivery procedures for the United States Peace Corps and Army Special Forces.
Following graduate studies in environmental epidemiology and environmental psychophysiology, he served as senior medical scientist for the Division of Indian and Alaska Native Health.
He worked on a number of pioneering projects, including the first application of satellite linked medical diagnostic imagery from remote Arctic Public Health facilities to specialty diagnostic centers, reducing the need for medical evacuation of patients. The project was conducted in collaboration with the United States Army and National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
He was medically retired, due to loss of central vision, from the United States Public Health Service with the rank of commander following 14 years of active duty.
On Dec. 11, 2002, he took vows of Life Profession as a Solitary anchored to the Bainbridge Parish of St. Barnabas.
The Rev. Webster Barnett, his mentor in ministry, stood with him as his vows were received by the Rt. Rev. Sanford Hampton, Bishop Assistant, of the Diocese of Olympia.
He was also licensed in pastoral care and leadership, and was a professional member of the Association of Military Chaplains and the Assembly of Episcopal Healthcare Chaplains.
He was a life member of the Blinded Veterans Association and the Disabled American Veterans Association.
In accordance with the Vietnam Era Readjustment Act, he was appointed as a civilian senior medical research scientist in the United States Public Health Service; there, he served as scientific director of USPHS’ Operational Medicine Informatics Laboratory, with units at the Naval Undersea Medical Institute and Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory in Groton, Conn.; the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego, Calif.; and the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., as well as in Seattle.
The family moved to Bainbridge Island in 1978 upon his assignment to the Public Health Service Marine Hospital in Seattle.
He served the island community as a charter member of the Bainbridge Island Trails Committee, and as chaplain for the Visually Impaired Persons support group.
He was also an ordained elder and founding member of the church Spiritual Formation movement at Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church.
Since his retirement from the United States Public Health Service in 1997, following 32 years of service, he served disabled and aged people on the island as part of the St. Barnabas Episcopal Church pastoral care ministry.
In 1990, he received the highest civilian award granted by the Public Health Service from the Surgeon General in ceremonies at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md., for “pioneering work and tireless dedication in the development and implementation of medical information systems for United States Public Health Service beneficiaries.”
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Connie Rollins Bonifield; son, Tom (Lauren) Bonifield, Jr. of Bainbridge Island; daughters Heather (Devon) Felise and Amanda (Yaro) Brock of Seattle; and granddaughter, Emma Rose Bonifield.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. May 29 at Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church, Bainbridge Island.
Memorials can be made to the healing ministry at Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church or the pastoral care ministry at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church.

Roza, Timothy John Tuesday, 18 May 2004
Timothy John Roza, age 60, of Bainbridge Island died at his home May 18.
He was born Aug. 23, 1943, in Chico, Calif., to Louis and Eva Roza. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, he worked for Boeing and later earned a degree in education from Seattle University.
In 1973, Tim began work for the Washington State Department of Revenue as a revenue officer. He worked there 30 years. He was very dedicated to his job,
He enjoyed spending time outdoors, camping and traveling, woodworking, reading, astronomy, dancing, and especially science fiction.
He is survived by his wife, Diane, Bainbridge Island; one daughter, Tamera McCoskery, Bainbridge Island; and his “Number 1” grandson, Spencer .
A rosary will be said at 9:30 a.m. May 25, followed by the funeral mass at 10 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Bainbridge Island. Burial will be at Tahoma National cemetery at 2 p.m.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home.

Hart, Jr., William S. Thursday, 13 May 2004
William S. Hart, Jr. age 81, of Bainbridge Island, died May 13 at Swedish Hospital in Seattle.
He was born Sept. 6, 1922 in Santa Monica, Calif., to William S. Hart, Sr. and Winifred Westover Hart, both silent film actors.
He graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1939 at age 17, and later earned a master’s degree in environmental planning. During World War II, he was a cryptographer and member of the Office of Strategic Services.
After many years struggling to secure his father’s ranch in Newhall, he turned to real estate development and appraisal. He taught appraisal, business and finance for some 40 years at various places including UCLA, USC and Santa Monica Community College.
He retired in 1989 and relocated to Bainbridge Island with his wife and children. He enjoyed reading and playing classical guitar.
He is survived by his wife Rosalind Hart; daughters Vanessa, Karina and Christina; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. May 26 at Port Madison Lutheran Church, with a ceremony at the Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Mortuary in Westwood, Calif., on June 12.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home.
