Guy, Dorothy Friday, 16 Apr 2004
Dorothy E. Guy, 105, died April 16 in Seattle, having lived in three different centuries.
She was born July 19, 1898 in Victoria, B.C. She met her husband Albert on Vashon Island, where she graduated from high school. She attended Bellingham Normal Teachers College, and taught school until her marriage.
She enjoyed travel with her husband, and spent 83 summers at Pleasant Beach on Bainbridge Island with family and friends.
She was a member of Queen Anne United Methodist Church, and attended Rolling Bay Presbyterian and Seabold United Methodist when on Bainbridge.
She is survived by her son, George A. (Marjorie), eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Albert K. Guy, president of G.O. Guy Drug Stores, and her daughter Grace and son-in-law John Putnam.
A memorial celebration will be held at 2 p.m. May 1 at Queen Anne Methodist Church.
Stevenson, Stuart H. Wednesday, 14 Apr 2004
Bainbridge Island resident, Dr. Stuart H. Stevenson, died peacefully at home on April 14.
He was born Aug. 3, 1924, in Ocean Falls, B.C., son of Hugh and Edythe (Errington) Stevenson.
The family settled in Aberdeen, Wash., where Stu graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1942.
He started college, leaving to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and returned to school after the war, graduating from the University of Oregon in 1947 and the Illinois College of Optometry in 1951.
He started his optometric practice in West Seattle in 1953, retiring in 1990. During that time he was very active in the West Seattle community, serving as president of the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, YMCA board of directors, and West Seattle Helpline. He also was a volunteer for the Bainbridge Island Helpline.
He served as president of the King County Optometric Society and was a trustee of the Washington Optometric Association, District No. 3. He volunteered his services to the Seattle Vision Center and the Seattle Millionaire Club Charity.
He and his wife Ginny relocated to Bainbridge Island in 1993. He was an active tennis player, joining the Bainbridge Island Racquet Club, until illness forced him to slow down.
He was an avid fishing enthusiast; he made countless fly-fishing journeys and salmon expeditions with his buddies throughout his lifetime.
His children were at the center of everything he did in his life. He was also particularly close to Ginny’s younger sisters, Anne Solomon and Diane Cantwell; Diane, who spent her childhood and teen summers with Stu and Ginny, was with the family at his side when he passed away.
He was also fond of his retriever companion, Cami, his best friend Dr. Sam (Sue) Tarica of West Seattle, and longtime friend and fishing buddy, Joel (Sally) Buxbaum of West Seattle.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Ginny, of Bainbridge Island; son Jon of Maple Valley, and daughter Sheri of Kent; his father-in-law, Sid (Pauline) Cantwell of Palo Alto, Calif.; his mother-in-law Carol Cantwell of Windsor, Calif.; and Ginny’s eight siblings, all of California.
At his request, no funeral services will be held; a celebration of life will be held in May on Bainbridge Island. In lieu of flowers, the family requests remembrances to a favorite charity.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home, Bainbridge Island.
Stockman, Rena Tuesday, 13 Apr 2004
Rena Stockman of Poulsbo, age 75, died April 13 at Harrison Hospital in Bremerton.
She was born April 25, 1928, in Williston, N.D., to Anton A. and Marie (Lokken) Odden.
She graduated from North Central High School in Spokane.
She entered the escrow and real estate industry in 1962. In 1969, she joined Puget Sound Mortgage and Escrow on Bainbridge Island, after co-owning Eastside Mortgage and Escrow in Bellevue since 1963.
She married
Donald H. Stockman on June 6, 1970, on Bainbridge Island.
At the time of her death, she owned and operated Sound Recon Services of Poulsbo. She and her husband also made a second career of buying and remodeling homes in Kitsap and Mason counties.
She enjoyed decorating her homes, traveling the country with her husband, playing golf, crafts, and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by daughters Cindy (Bruce) Campbell, of Shaker Heights, Ohio, Laurie (Paul) LeMay of Poulsbo, and Resi Stockman of Vancouver, Wash.; sons Richard Stockman and Robert Stockman, both of California, John (Pam) Stockman and Hank Stockman, all of Seattle; and 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1991.
Services were April 17, with arrangements by the Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove Memorial Park, Poulsbo. An online memorial can be viewed at www.lewischapel.com.
Upham, Robert L. ‘Roy’ Tuesday, 13 Apr 2004
Robert L. “Roy” Upham, age 65, of Suquamish, died April 13.
He was born Sept. 28, 1938, in Polson, Mont.
He was self-employed as an interior designer. In the mid-1970s, he founded the Hobby Horse restaurant on Bainbridge Island.
He is survived by his companion Wesley Jacobson of Suquamish; stepbrother Tim Jensen and aunt Beatrice Atkinson, both of Montana.
A gathering will be held from 2-6 p.m. April 24 at the Golden Dragon Restaurant in Poulsbo.
Palmeter, Felicia M. Monday, 12 Apr 2004
Felicia M. Palmeter, age 99, of Bainbridge Island died April 12.
She was born Oct. 3, 1904, in Yakima.
She is survived by children Marlene N. Maitland of Bainbridge Island and Earl A. Palmeter of Snoqualmie; and six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
Services will be at 1 p.m. May 1 at Eagle Harbor Congregational Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the church, or to a favorite charity.
Bickler, Jane E. Tuesday, 29 Jun 2004
Jane E. Bickler of Suquamish died June 29, in Suquamish. She was 85.
Bickler was born to Godfred and Myrtle Clarberg in Seattle on June 9, 1919. She graduated from Franklin High School in Seattle in 1936.
She married
Peter Bickler on Aug. 23, 1942 in Seattle. She was a housewife who enjoyed reading, traveling and spending time with family. Her husband built the home in which she lived until her death.
Bickler is survived by her daughter JoAnn (Stan) Baker of Rolling Bay and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Peter Bickler, parents Godfred and Myrtle Clarberg, son Paul Bickler and brother Jack Clarberg.

Grotle, Bertha Thursday, 01 Jul 2004
Bainbridge native Bertha Grotle, 91, died July 1 in Seattle.
She was born April 28, 1913 on Bainbridge. She served her country in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a nurse, and continued her career as a nurse for the next 50 years.
She is survived by her niece, Karolin Highland, and nephews Ken, Del and Mark Grotle.
Services are 11 a.m. July 8 at Wiggen and Sons Funeral Home, 2003 NW 57th St., Seattle.
Graveside services are 11 a.m. July 9 at Kane cemetery on Bainbridge Island. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimers Foundation.
Prichard, Bobbye Friday, 17 Dec 2004
Former Bainbridge Island resident Bobbye Prichard, 73, of Port Orchard, died of cancer Dec. 17 at Ridgemont Terrace care center.
She was born Dec. 16, 1931, in Sterling, Colo., to LeRoy and Esther (Saylors) Mills, and grew up in Greeley, Colo.
On June 29, 1948, she married
William E. Prichard in Greeley.
She was a homemaker who enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, teaching them arts and crafts and painting. She was also a “serious rock hound” and jewelry maker.
She and her family lived on Bainbridge Island from 1955-1981.
She is survived by her husband; son Doug (Becky) Prichard of Port Orchard; daughters Jackie Armstrong of Puyallup and Robin (Jimmy) Neville of Port Orchard; sister LaVonne Stansbury of Cheyenne, Wyo.; grandchildren Coliene, Taylor and Sam Prichard, and J.J. and Daisha Neville, all of Port Orchard, and Scott and David Wilbur of Puyallup; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by son Lee Prichard in 1964.

Somers, Howard Edward Saturday, 15 Jan 2005
One of the early pioneers in the now flourishing Washington state wine industry, Howard Edward Somers died Jan. 15 at his home in Poulsbo. He was 86.
Born Nov. 23, 1918, at the former Seattle General Hospital, he attended Latona Grade School and the former Lincoln High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering at the University of Washington and a master’s degree at Cornell University.
Following service as an officer in the United States Navy in World War II, he became a partner and winemaker in his father’s St. Charles Winery at Grapeview. It was the first bonded winery in the state.
He retired as a commander in the U. S. Navy Reserves.
After his father’s death and subsequent sale of St. Charles Winery, he became oenologist for Seattle’s one-time National Wine Growers and later Chateau Ste. Michelle in Woodinville. During this time, he was instrumental in the development of the prize-winning “Johannesburg Riesling.”
Retiring from wine-making he tried his hand at real estate, joining the John L. Scott agency on Mercer Island. He was president of the Mercer Island Chamber of Commerce and later, after a move to Bainbridge Island, worked as an agent with Johansson and Clark Realtors.
He was a charter member and former secretary of the Washington Wine Grower’s Association, a charter member of the American Society of Oenologists, and founding member of the “Knights of the Vine.”
He enjoyed study, sailing and being with his family.
He is survived by his wife Murial, two children; son Laurie Somers and wife Carol of Port Townsend; daughter Kristi Somers of Portland, Ore., and son-in-law Ron Orr of Bainbridge; a brother, Bill Somers of Gig Harbor; and grandchildren Matt Orr, Kjirste Orr and April Cross.
He was preceded in death by his children Elizabeth Orr of Bainbridge Island and Donald Somers of Seattle.
A service and reception will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 21 at Grace Episcopal Church on Bainbridge. Remembrances may be made to Grace Church Memorial Fund or the American Cancer Society.
Bennett, Jimmie Travis Friday, 07 Jan 2005
Former Bainbridge Island resident Jimmie Travis Bennett, 68, of Loon Lake, Wash., died Jan. 7 at Holy Family Hospital in Spokane.
He was born June 7, 1936, in Lawtey, Fla. He spent most of his life in Alaska, where he worked for the city of Anchorage fire department. He retired from the City of Bainbridge Island’s Department of Public Works in 2000.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Bennett, of Loon Lake; step-daughters Patricia Henry of Hailey, Idaho, and Teresa Graves of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; brother Avery Bennett of Nebraska and Charles Bennett of Georgia; sisters Esther Bennett of California and Dee DeMontollin of North Carolina; and two grandchildren.
He was cremated, and no services are planned. Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society.
Arrangements are under the direction of Schanzenbach Funeral Home, Chewelah, Wash.
Hildebrand, Katherine ‘Kitty’ Thursday, 13 Jan 2005
Katherine ‘Kitty’ Hildebrand, 66, died Jan. 13, surrounded by her children after a long battle with lung disease.
She was the first child born to Dr. Robert and Katherine Mullarky of Seattle. She was raised in the Mt. Baker area of Seattle and graduated high school from the Bush School in 1956.
After high school, the former Seattle debutante moved to Oakland, Calif., and attended Mills College. There, she met and married
Dr. Byron Hildebrand of Oakland.
The couple had three children. After her husband’s death in 1972, she returned to the Northwest and settled on Bainbridge Island in 1977.
She worked for Farmer’s Insurance and the optometry office of Dr. George Neishem. She then went to work at the M.L. Mallard yarn shop, developing her already outstanding knitting and needlework skills. Her works were recognized by numerous organizations, with one of her pieces being chosen for the White House Christmas tree.
She enjoyed the friends that stitching brought her, from Bainbridge to Greenbrier. She also loved to travel, create meals, peruse mail order catalogs and do crossword puzzles. She enjoyed looking out at the water from her Eagle Harbor home, and watching her grandchildren play on the beach.
She is survived by her children, Kass (Mike) Klemz of Lynnwood, Heidi (Mark Hannon) of Bainbridge Island and Robert (Jaime) of Pleasanton, Calif.; brother Pat (Milly) Mullarky of Kirkland; sister Macy (Dick Ackerly) Mullarky of Seattle; and her five grandchildren: Katie and Mike Klemz, Nickolas Hannon, and Madison and Mia Hildebrand.
She was preceded in death by her husband, and her sister Susan Mullarky of Tucson, Ariz.
The family thanked Dr. George Pappas and staff at Swedish Medical Center, who provided care and comfort during her illness, and other caretakers.
