Hoffman, Janet Lorraine Thursday, 23 Oct 2003
Longtime island resident Janet Lorraine Hoffman, age 75, died at Island Health and Rehabilitation on Oct. 23.
She was born Aug. 23, 1928, in Seattle, daughter of Louis and Stella (Kuntz) Griffin.
Shortly after she graduated from Lincoln High School in Seattle, she married William C. Hoffman. They lived in Seattle until they came to Bainbridge Island in 1971 as the co-owners of Village Foods.
They operated the store until 1985. While at Village Foods, Janet was the bookkeeper.
She also served on the election boards for Snohomish and Kitsap counties for 35 years.
After retirement, she spend several years working at the Bargain Boutique. She enjoyed playing bridge and cribbage, and traveling.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
She is survived by her mother, Stella of Seattle; three daughters – Sue Pomar of Bainbridge Island, Carol Harvey of Bothell and Betsy Simpson of Burien; and three grandchildren – Jennifer, Meagan and Kelli.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Madison Avenue Retirement Center.

The family expressed its thanks to the staff at Island Health and Rehabilitation for the care they provided.

Schaeffer, Inez Lucile Thursday, 23 Oct 2003
Former Bainbridge resident Inez Lucile (Deiner) Schaeffer, age 72, died Oct. 23 at her home near Belfair, under the care of Hospice.
She was born April 11, 1931 in Arlington, to Charles Harry Deiner II and Hannah Marie (Sjodin) Deiner, residents of Oso, Wash.
She lived for more than 30 years as caretaker at Fay Bainbridge State Park, the Country Club of Seattle and the American Legion Hall property. In 1998, she moved to a small cabin at Lake Christine outside of Belfair.
She was an active member of the American Legion Colin Hyde Post No. 172 Women’s Auxiliary.
She served as auxiliary president, many times organizing community services such as blood bank, gift packages to the Retsil veterans home, and Girls State. She was always a part of the work crew for American Legion bingo and had a passion for the game.
She was an artist at heart, spending many years creating holly wreaths and cedar garlands that decorated many local businesses and homes.
She was a founding member of Kitsap Clay Works for hobby ceramists in the early 1980s.
She continued to do ceramics through her illness, teaching Jack to do all the casting work. The two of them together were regular vendors at many local holiday bazaars and had become regular vendors at the Belfair farmers market during the summer season.
She enjoyed family gatherings, being with her grandchildren, camping, a family hunting camp in Twisp, playing bingo and trips to Reno with friends.
She is survived by her husband John “Jack” Rodger Schaeffer; children Donald Ivan Schaeffer of Maltby, Anna Marie Million of Tahuya, Joseph Ralph Schaeffer of Suquamish, Ingrid Lucile McDonald of Bremerton, Michelle Inez Solier of Bremerton, and John Charles Schaeffer of Suquamish; many grandchildren; and brothers Harry Deiner of California, Robert Deiner of California, Lester Deiner of Hawaii, and sister Iris Queen of East Wenatchee.
A memorial service and brunch will be held at 3 p.m. Nov. 2 at the American Legion Colin Hyde Post No. 172 on Bucklin Hill Road.
Arrangements are by Kass Funeral Home.

Clark, Arthur B. Thursday, 23 Oct 2003
Bainbridge resident Arthur B. Clark, age 79, died at Oct. 23 at Messenger House Care Center.
He was born July 5, 1924 in Mook, Ky., to W.J. and Eva (Sipes) Clark.
He enlisted in the Army at a young age and served 12 years in the United States, Europe, Korea and Japan. It was while stationed in Vienna, Austria that he met and married his first wife.
When he returned to the States, he worked at the University of Washington and later at Boeing, where after 20 years he retired in 1986.
He is survived by children, Arthur B. Clark, Jr., and Rosalie Clark-Horacek, both of Vienna, Austria; Colleen Clark-Dyke, Bainbridge Island; one sister, Anna Frances Oliver, Bowling Green, Ky.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
At his request, no services will be held. Arrangements are by Kass Funeral Home.

Smith, George Edward Tuesday, 21 Oct 2003
Bainbridge Island resident George Edward Smith III, age 84, died Oct. 21 at Island Health and Rehabilitation on Bainbridge Island after a two-year bout with cancer.
He was born March 2, 1919 in Seattle, to Glen H. and Edith (Andersen) Smith.
He attended Lincoln High School in Seattle and served in the Army during World War II.
Following his military service, he worked as a salesman for Quaker Oats, and later for Georgia Pacific Paper Company, where he worked for 20 years.
During his time at Georgia Pacific, he worked in Portland, Ore., and Atlanta, Ga., becoming vice president of sales for the Far East and traveling extensively.
He was an avid boater, fisherman and motor-home enthusiast. He enjoyed his winters in Palm Desert, Calif.
He is survived by his wife, Marion, Bainbridge Island; son, George Smith IV, of Edmonds; two brothers, Benjamin Smith, Gordon Smith; one sister, Dorothy Gilsdorf; and three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret Ann.
A celebration of his life was held Oct. 25 at the family residence.
Remembrances can be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 2383, Bremerton, WA 98310.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home.

Clifford, Patricia ‘Pat’ Friday, 23 Apr 2004
Former Bainbridge Island resident Patricia “Pat” Clifford died April 23. She was 101.
She was born May 31, 1902, in Prienai, Lithuania, to Matt and Magdalena Kachulis. She came to America with her family in 1911, and they settled in Tacoma.
She moved to Bainbridge Island in 1970, and celebrated her 100th birthday at the Winslow Arms apartments where she lived.
She enjoyed being with people, playing bingo and pinochle; she was a volunteer at the Bainbridge Island Senior Community Center thrift shop, and was a member of Unity Church.
For the last two years, she was a resident of Cedars at Park Rose Assisted Living in Tacoma.
She is survived by daughter Anita (Don) Willsey of Tacoma and son Stan (Lucille) Keders of Sun City, Calif.; and four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Clyde, and three brothers and two sisters.
At her request, there will be no services. Memorials can be made to the the BI Senior Center.

Nickerson, Charles ‘Nick’ Friday, 23 Apr 2004
Charles ‘‘Nick” Nickerson, 79, died April 23 in Klamath Falls, Ore.
He was born July 11, 1924 in Troutdale, Ore., to Mark and Ada Nickerson. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II in the South Pacific.
He was chief engineer for Bell Laboratories and held a number of patents. The most notable was the use of Braille for telephone operators.
He lived in the Northwest most of his life. He was an original investor in Bainbridge Floorcovering when it was purchased by Steve Shawley in 1972.
He is survived by his daughter Signe, son-in-law Leo and grandson Mathew, all of Klamath Falls, and brother-in-law Richard of Lebanon, Ore.
A memorial service will be held July 11 in Portland, Ore.
Duckworth, Herman C. Tuesday, 20 Apr 2004
Herman C. Duckworth, 81, of Bainbridge Island died April 20 at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after an aneurysm.
He was born May 27, 1922, in Minneapolis, Kan., to Albert and Ruth Duckworth. He graduated from high school in Cassville, Mo.
He served in the Army Air Force from 1942 to 1945, where he earned the Philippine Liberation Medal and Bronze Stars.
On May 4, 1946, he married Dolores Bokovoy.
He went on to work for 11 years as a masonry contractor and 27 years as a meat cutter with Town and Country Market on Bainbridge.
He enjoyed gardening and greenhouse work, and was a member of Bainbridge First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife Dolores; two sons, Ronald and Donald Duckworth; a daughter, Pamela Duckworth; a sister, Betty (Duckworth) Morris; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. A brother, Robert, preceded him in death.
A graveside service will be at 1:30 p.m. April 24 at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bremerton, followed by a reception at 3:30 p.m. at the Bainbridge First Baptist Church. Memorial donations may be made to Bainbridge First Baptist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn.

Anderson, Eleanor Burns Monday, 19 Apr 2004
Eleanor “Ellie” Burns Anderson, age 87, died April 19 at Martha and Mary Health Center in Poulsbo.
She was born to Harry and Margaret Mullen Burns in Seattle, on Feb. 15, 1917, the sixth of seven children.
Growing up in Seattle, she graduated from Holy Names Academy, earned a bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of Washington, and later a master’s degree from the University of Puget Sound.
She was a social worker who worked primarily with families and children. Her last professional position was in Tacoma working with adoption and foster-care placement for Catholic Community Services.
Always a dedicated volunteer, she was on the board for the Nativity House, a member of the St. Leo’s Catholic Parish, a member of the Gig Harbor Chapter of the American Assocation of University Women and a lifelong Democrat.
When she moved to Bainbridge Island from Gig Harbor, she quickly established deep roots and new friendships by involvement with the Bainbridge Ometepe Sister Island Association, her book group, line-dancing and exercise classes, as well as frequent visits to the Bainbridge public library.
She was a reader, traveler, berry picker and activist who had great empathy and respect for others.
She is survived by her children Alistair R. (Bob) Anderson, Jr. (Elizabeth Mariner) of Capitola, Calif.; Kenneth J. (Ken) Anderson (Sherri Robertson) of Seattle; Mary Jane (Molly) Anderson (Michael Corroone) of Woodinville; Elisabeth C. (Libby) Anderson (Michael Bonoff), of Bainbridge Island; Alicia E. (Lissy) Anderson (Richard Hagemeier) of Vancouver, Wash.; and Katherine F. “Kit” (Jim Laws) Anderson-Laws of Bainbridge Island.
She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; sister Jane Ellen of Portland, Ore.; and cousins Ellen Mullen of Seattle and Mary Frances of Spokane.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alistair R. Anderson, Sr., in 1970 and a daughter, Margaret Jean Anderson Looper, in 1988.
Services will be at 12 p.m. April 30 at St. Leo’s Church, 710 S. 13th St., Tacoma. A reception will follow at the home of Ann and Bill Evans, 1320 North Yakima, Tacoma.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Nativity House 2304 Jefferson Ave., Tacoma, 98405. Arrangements are by Kass Funeral Home.

Strobeck, George Donald Friday, 16 Apr 2004
George David Strobeck Sr., age 85, of Bainbridge Island, died April 16 at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle.
He was born Oct. 4, 1918, in Edgewater, Colo. to George and Louise Strobeck.
On Aug. 11, 1940, he married Anne Ruth Payne in Edgewater.
He graduated from Wheat Ridge High School in Wheat Ridge, Colo., and attended the University of Colorado, Denver, and the University of Washington.
He came to Bainbridge Island in 1941 to work at the Winslow Marine Railway and Shipyard Co.
He served in the Navy from 1945 to 1947, stationed in Pennsylvania. He was then employed as an engineer by Nickum and Spaulding Naval Architects. He worked for L.G. Massart Plumbing and Heating as a field engineer at Kwajalein Atoll. He retired from the firm of Bouillon, Christofferson and Schairer Consulting Engineers as a Professional Engineer in 1981.
He was a watercolorist who also enjoyed trout fishing, walking on the beach and desert, camping, golfing and spending time with his family and friends. He was also a scout leader with Troop 496 of the Boy Scouts of America.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Ruth; son George David Strobeck Jr. and daughter Sharon (Robert) Carter; grandchildren Tamara (D.L.) Bennett, Kristen (Donald) Schwartz, Edward (Tara) Strobeck, Shannon Strobeck, Jennifer Komedal, Robert Strobeck and David Strobeck; great-grandchildren Trevor and Collin Strobeck; and several nieces and nephews.
A gathering of family and friends will be held 1-3 p.m. May 8 at the Bainbridge Island Commons.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Bainbridge Island Aid Car, c/o Bainbridge Fire Dept, 8895 Madison Ave. NE; the American Diabetes Associations; the Bainbridge Island Senior Community Center, P.O. Box 11205; or the Kitsap Humane Society, 9167 Dickey Road NW, Bremerton, WA.
