Smith, William Brent Saturday, 17 Aug 2002
Bainbridge native William Brent Smith, age 84, died Aug. 17 in Anacortes.
He was born in 1918 on Bainbridge Island in a log home built by his grandfather.
After graduation from Garfield High and the University of Washington, he attended the Officer Candidate School in Annapolis, Md.
During WWII he served as a Navy communications first lieutenant in New Guinea. After the war, he was instrumental in structuring the radio communications system for Seattle City Light at Ross Dam. He then worked a full career as an aerospace engineer in California.
Retiring to the Northwest in 1995, he and his wife, Marion, were for years a familiar sight in Anacortes as they took their daily walks.
He is survived by children Brent, Carroll and Elizabeth; grandchildren Talitha, Megan, Robin, Travis and Regina; and great-grandchildren, Ally Ann, Barret Brent and Jeremiah Roy.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Aug. 23 at Evans Funeral Chapel in Anacortes.

Gill, Ronald Everett Saturday, 17 Aug 2002
Bainbridge resident Ronald Everett Gill, age 55, died Aug. 17 at his sister’s home in Lyle.
He was born Sept. 4, 1946 in Los Angeles, Calif. to Rex and Marian (Ness) Gill. He grew up in Ridgecrest, Calif. and attended Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo, Calif., graduating as a mechanical engineer.
His passion for sailing led him to Wilsonville, Ore. where he built a sailboat. After moving to Washington, he sailed the boat to Costa Rica and then to Florida. He later relocated to Bainbridge Island, where he continued to craft fine sailboats.
He is survived by his brother Larry Gill and his wife Lynne of Dallasport, Wa.; sister Patrice Archuleta and her husband James of Lyle; niece Megan Gill of The Dalles, Ore.; nephew Nat Gill of Maui, Hawaii; nephew Luke George of Grass Valley, Calif.; niece Carole Archuleta of Sacramento, Calif., and nephew Vincent Archuleta of San Francisco, Calif.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Aug. 31 at 656 Struck Road in Lyle.

Kidder, Elizabeth Sexton Friday, 16 Aug 2002
Bainbridge resident Elizabeth Sexton Kidder, age 84, died Aug. 16 in Seattle.
She was born Mar. 31, 1918 in Winchester, Mass. to Isaac Edward Sexton and Nellie (Fraser) Sexton. She attended Brimmer and Mary High School in Boston, Mass. and graduated from Bennett College in Millbrook, N.Y. in 1938.
On Mar. 21, 1942, she married
Arthur A. Kidder, Jr. in Winchester, Mass.
She was a homemaker, and enjoyed painting, needlepoint, knitting and rug hooking. She was a member of the Freedom Public Library in Freedom, N.H., Bainbridge Island Visually Impaired Support Group and the Wing Point Country Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Kidder, in 1989, and siblings Edward Sexton, Jane Prescott and Helen Mcintyre.
She is survived by three daughters, Lynda Kidder Scheer of Coconut Creek, Fla., Dianne Kidder and husband Dan Johnston of Bainbridge, and Sally Kidder David and husband Bob of Bainbridge; eight grandchildren – Andrew J. Scheer, Jr., Christopher A. Scheer, Timothy A. Robinson, Jessica E. Robinson, Elizabeth F. Robinson, Sarah S. Davis, Tiffany M. Davis and Joshua P. Davis; and great-grandchild Tyler D. Robinson.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Aug. 24 at Forest Lawn cemetery in Barrington, R.I. under the direction of Monahan, Kelly, Drabble, Sherman Funeral Home in Providence, R.I. Interment will be in Forest Lawn cemetery in Barrington, R.I.

Werter, Joan Helen Tuesday, 13 Aug 2002
Bainbridge resident Joan Helen Werter, age 76 died Aug. 13 at Harrison Hospital from complications due to lung cancer.
She was born June 30, 1926, in St. Louis to Merrill and Mabel (Becker) Baker. She graduated from Fremont High School in Los Angeles, Calif. in 1944.
On June 13, 1953, she married
Don Werter in Las Vegas, Nev.
She worked as an administrative assistant with the South Bay Union High School District in Hermosa Beach, Calif., and at Clapp School in Huntington Beach, Calif. She retired in 1988 after 20 years.
She was a talented watercolor artist.
She is survived by her husband, Don Werter, of Bainbridge; a daughter, Deborah Werter of Redwood City, Calif.; a son, Jeff Werter and his wife, Deborah, of Antioch, Calif.; a brother, John Baker of Laguna Beach, Calif.; two sisters, Wanda Penn of San Rafael, Calif., and Patricia Wolf of Los Angeles; and grandchildren Brian and Laura.
At her request, private services were held.

Doane, Gordon K. Saturday, 10 Aug 2002
Gordon K. Doane, age 86, died Aug. 10 at the Madison Avenue Retirement Center.
He was born Jan. 17, 1916 in Almira, to Oscar and Eva Doane. He graduated from Almira High School in 1933 and attended two years at Washington State University.
He took a job as a concrete engineer on the Grand Coulee Dam project. While at Coulee Dam he married
Dorothy (Jerrich) Doane in 1939.
He worked at Bangor and Keyport and was the supervising engineer for the Alaska ferry terminals that stretch from Ketchikan to Skagway.
The family lived in Alaska for 20 years, where he spent his free time hunting and fishing.
After 30 years with the government, he retired in 1975 and moved to Bainbridge, where his favorite activity was golfing with friends at Meadowmeer Golf Course.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; children Robert Doane and Cynthia (Doane) Sypolt; grandchildren Sophia and Mac Doane and Kelly Hawley and great-granddaughter Jessica Hawley.
Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Madison Avenue Retirement Center.
Kelly, Jennievee Isabel Friday, 09 Aug 2002
Jennievee Isabel Kelly, age 89, of Bainbridge Island, died Aug. 9 at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle.
She was born Dec. 15, 1912, in Ypsilanti, N.D., to Julius and Mary (Angen) Ukestad. She was a 1930 graduate of Ypsilanti High School.
On May 24, 1934, she married
Owen A. Kelly in Jamestown, N.D.
In the early 1940s, they moved to Rolling Bay on Bainbridge Island, where she worked as a cook at Messenger House Nursing Home from 1950-74.
She enjoyed sewing, quilting, cultivating flowers and knitting caps for premature babies born at Harrison Hospital. She was an active member of Port Madison Lutheran Church.
She is survived by three sons, Donald Kelly and his wife, Julie, of Kingston, Owen “Buster” Kelly and his wife, Maureen, of Bremerton, and David Kelly of Rolling Bay; two daughters, Patricia Yeo and her husband Bill, and Lorretta Short and her husband Dave, all of Bainbridge; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Ken Gehlhar of Jamestown, N.D.; a sister-in-law, Gladys Ukestad of North Dakota; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1959; brothers Loyal, Manroy and James; sisters Ianca Larson and Bertha Gehlhar; and half-brothers Marcus and David Ukestad.
Funeral services were held Aug. 12 at Port Madison Lutheran Church. Interment was at Hillcrest cemetery at Port Blakely.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Port Madison Lutheran Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Areneda, Fredrick Miguel “Freddie” Friday, 28 Feb 2003
Bainbridge Island resident Fredrick Miguel “Freddie” Areneda died Feb. 28 in North Vancouver, B.C., Canada.
He was born on Dec. 14, 1933 in Vancouver, BC. He logged from the 1950s until 1980 in Washington and Alaska and worked at North Kitsap High from 1982-1998.
He is survived by his children Bob (Sheila) Nanaimo, BC; Charlotte (Brian), North Vancouver, BC; Fred Jr. (Adrienne), Bainbridge Island; Peter (Christine), Suquamish; Jerry, Kingston; Joseph, Kingston; Frances (Jerry), Port Orchard; 19 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. April 12 at Kane cemetery on Bainbridge Island.
A luncheon will follow immediately after the service at the Suquamish Tribal Center, Sandy Hook Road, Suquamish.
Flodin, Edna Dorothy Monday, 24 Feb 2003
Lifelong Bainbridge resident Edna Dorothy Flodin died Feb. 24 at age 98, at Messenger House on Bainbridge Island.
One of nine children, she was born Nov. 21, 1904 in Eagledale to Charles Victor and Jennie Lundgren.
To attend Winslow High School, she had to row a boat across Eagle Harbor. She graduated in 1922.
In 1928 she married
Maldur H. Flodin, also an island native. He preceded her in death in 1979.
Her hobbies were gardening and travel, although her main interest in life was her family.
She is survived by sons Roger (Mardette) of Bellevue; Lyle (Ada) of Sequim; four grandsons, two granddaughters, six great grandsons, two great-granddaughters, her sister Mildred Ostrand of Bainbridge Island, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. April 5 at Bethany Lutheran Church on Bainbridge Island.

Raber, Chester “Chet” Lowell Sunday, 23 Feb 2003
Chester “Chet” Lowell Raber, 87, died Feb. 23 at his home in Whittier, Calif. He was born Jan. 19, 1916 in Juneau, Alaska, the youngest child of Albert and Stella. After his graduation from Sultan High School in Sultan, Wa., he and his parents, sister Evelyn and brother Kenneth moved to Bainbridge, where they lived for many years.
He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II in the South Pacific, and was honorably discharged in 1946. In 1947 he married
Sylvia Ackerman and joined General Petroleum Oil Company.
When the company became Mobil Oil in 1953, he moved to the new headquarters in Los Angeles, Calif., making a home in Whittier. He retired from Mobil in 1975.
His greatest interest after family was history; systematically reading the holdings of the local library. He enjoyed visiting the older areas of the United States to explore historical sites, as well as travelling to Europe with his wife to visit family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia, in 1995. He is survived by daughters Sally (Barry) Pataky of Whittier and Conni (Doug) Clarke of Vashon Island; grandson Ted and great-granddaughters Kimberly and Katherine, all of Whittier. No services will be held. Remembrances may be made to the American Heart Association.
Nelson, Jane Hakes Sunday, 23 Feb 2003
Former islander Jane Hakes Nelson, age 82, died Feb. 23 at the Franke Tobey Jones Retirement Estates on Point Defiance in Tacoma.
She was born July 28, 1920 in St. Louis, Mo. She attended Stephens College and graduated in 1941 from Iowa State College with a B.S. in home economics/textiles and clothing.
She was a homemaker, wife and mother of two children. She enjoyed pets, sewing, cooking, gardening and antiques.
From January 1995 to October 2002, she and her husband, Bradley H. Nelson, lived at the Marina Condominium at Harbourside on Bainbridge. They then moved to Franke Tobey Jones Retirement Estates.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years; son Murray D. (Bonnie) Nelson of Fox Island; daughter Nona N. (Rick) McCown of Pittsburgh, Pa.; grandchildren Fiona N. (Todd) Walter of Mountain View, Calif., and Sara and Christopher McCown, of Pittsburgh and Colorado; and great-grandchildren Kiana and Reese Walter.
Services were held March 1 at Franke Toby Jones in Tacoma. Remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the American Heart Association. Arrangements were by Tuell-McKee Funeral Home in Tacoma.
Arcand, Elizabeth Imelda Friday, 21 Feb 2003
Bainbridge resident Elizabeth Imelda Arcand, age 77, died Feb. 21 at Messenger House Care Center on Bainbridge Island.
She was born Dec. 24, 1925, in New Haven, Conn., to Jeremiah Francis and Mary Loretta (Cavanaugh) Dunn. She graduated from Commercial High School in New Haven, Conn., in 1943.
She earned a degree as a registered nurse from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Portland, Maine. She later worked in private practice in New Haven until being commissioned as an ensign in the Navy in 1950.
She served at Bethesda Naval Hospital and at St. Albans in New York, where she met her husband, Albert Arcand, a naval officer.
She became a homemaker and mother after an honorable discharge in 1952, and spent the next 15 years traveling to such places as New York; Norfolk, Va., Guam; Brunswick, Maine; Korea and Keyport, Wash.
The couple moved to Bainbridge Island in 1967.
She was devoted to her children and to her husband of 52 years, enjoying picnics, swimming and knitting. She also volunteered for Children’s Orthopedic, Bainbridge Island; and the naval hospital in Bremerton.
She gave her family her deep faith in God.
She is survived by her husband, Albert, of Bainbridge; four sons: Jeremiah of Yakima, Albert, Jr., of Bethesda, Md., Edward of Silverdale, and Andrew of Silverdale; daughters Denise Wolber of Colleyville, Texas; Colette Arcand of Bainbridge, and Michele Belieu of Bainbridge; 14 grandchildren; brothers Daniel Dunn and William Dunn; and sisters Loretta McCarthy and Jane Dunn, all of Connecticut.
She was preceded in death by her son Paul in 1976, and her sister, Anna in 1993.
The rosary will be said at 10 a.m. Feb. 26 followed by the mass of Christian burial at 10:30, both at St. Cecilia Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Kane cemetery, Bainbridge Island.
