Godwin, Kenneth Edward Monday, 06 Mar 2006
Kenneth Edward Godwin, age 83, died March 6 at Normandy Park, Wash.
He was born March 14, 1922 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II, after which he graduated from McGill University with a master’s degree in civil engineering.
He moved to Bainbridge Island in 1965 and worked for Chevron in Seattle for many years.
He was a leader in the local Boy Scouts and an avid hang glider pilot.
He is survived by his wife Jeannine; son Glen and daughter-in-law Kerri; and grandsons James and Matthew.

Hanson, Marcella Phelps Friday, 24 Feb 2006
Marcella Phelps “Marcy” Hanson died Feb. 24, in Poulsbo. She was 80.
She was born Nov. 8, 1925 in Brecken­ridge, Minn. and grew up in rural Missouri, where the Depression had a big impact on the lives of her and her family.
After college, she reared her family in Terre Haute, Indiana and then North Allegheny, Penn.
She earned a degree in zoology from the University of Michigan in 1946.
As her oldest son went off to college himself, she entered law school at the University of Pittsburgh in 1967 and received her degree in 1970.
She practiced law for a number of years before she was called on to serve as a judge in the Children’s Court of Allegheny County. She retired from the bench in 1981.
Upon retirement she and her husband, Ray Hanson, moved to Poulsbo.
Always an active member of her community, she ran the Community Blood Program in Terre Haute and served on the school board in Allegheny County, Penn.
Locally, she served on the Poulsbo Library Board and contributed many hours of volunteer time to the Children’s Hospital Bargain Boutique on Bainbridge Island.
She and her husband were longtime active members of the Suquamish Community Congregational Church.
She is survived by her older sister Ruth Mark, of Scottsdale Ariz.; three children, Chris Scott Hanson of Bainbridge Island, Holly Stuart of Poulsbo, and Nick Hanson of Seattle; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held March 19 after the regular church service at the Suquamish Community Congregational Church, 18732 Division Ave. in Suquamish.
Memorials may be made to the Children’s Hospital Bargain Boutique, 572 Winslow Way E., Bainbridge Island, WA 98110; or to the Poulsbo Library, 700 NE Lincoln St., Poulsbo, WA 98370.

Hoyum, H. Marguerite Friday, 03 Mar 2006
H. Marguerite Hoyum, 85, died March 3 at Messenger House Care Center on Bainbridge Island.
She was born Aug. 4, 1920 in Reardon, Wash. to William John Arp and Flena Hoge.
She was an 80-year resident of the Spokane area.
She devoted her life to her family and volunteered her time to her church, Meals on Wheels, Greater Spokane Music Festival, Hutton Elementary School PTA, Cross Walk (a ministry to help troubled teens) and many other areas of service. She also was a board member of the Riverview Nursing Home.
She was a member of the Central Lutheran Church in Spokane and the Port Madison Lutheran Church on Bainbridge Island.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alton Hoyum, and her granddaughter, Carolyn Jean Hoyum.
She is survived by her children; Ron Hoyum and his wife, Lori, and Julee Huggins and her husband Gary; siblings Leora (Frank) Renner and Chris (Bill) Wyatt; grandchildren Erica, John and Gretchen; and nephews Stephen and Greg Renner and Chuck and Gordon Wyatt.
Graveside services were March 7 at Riverside Memorial Park in Spokane.
A local memorial service will be held at a future date.

Harris, Doris S. Sunday, 05 Mar 2006
Doris S. Harris, 81, of Bainbridge Island died March 5.
She was born on Nov. 7, 1924, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Franklin and Florence (Renard) Simpson.
She moved from her childhood home in Philadelphia to Seattle in 1945 to work at the Bell Telephone Company.
She and her husband, Malcolm, moved to Bainbridge Island shortly after their marriage 41 years ago.
When Doris retired from working, she continued her commute to Seattle for her volunteer work at Harborview Medical Center and the American Diabetes Association.
Doris loved and was fascinated by the wildlife that visited their home in the woods. Only one of the many traveling trips Malcolm planned could lure her away from her observation post of woodland animals and birds, or her beloved dog, Holly.
She was preceded in death by her three older brothers. She is survived by her husband, Malcolm, of Bainbridge Island; and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. March 18 at the family home, 10895 Skinner Road on Bainbridge Island. For information, call 842-9577. All who wish to attend are welcome.

Yetsko, John Michael Thursday, 23 Feb 2006
John Michael Yetsko of Bainbridge Island died Feb. 23 due to complications from Parkinson’s disease.
After a long and notable career in the U.S. military, and 20 more years of university and college administration, he and his wife of 60 years, Bonnie Hopper Yetsko, retired to Bainbridge Island in 2001, to be close to their family.
He was born Jan. 8, 1923, in Revloc, Penn., to Charles Casper and Esther Ellen (Carns) Yetsko. After attending St. Peter’s High School in McKeesport, Pa., he graduated from Holy Hills Carmelite Seminary, in Hubertus, Wis., a monastery of Friars of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
He began his military career serving sea duty for the U.S. Marines in England and Scotland. He served as a personal aide to President Franklin Roosevelt, while also attached to the USS Wichita commander, acting as consultant to the British Navy.
In 1942, he became a member of the elite U.S. Marine Corps Raiders, Carlson’s Raiders, 2nd, a select and secret group developed by President Roosevelt for purposes similar to the British Commandos and the Chinese guerilla resistance. James Roosevelt became the executive officer of the commando intelligence unit, as well as a lifelong friend.
He earned numerous commendations, citations and medals of valor in the Pacific theater, including a Silver Star, five Bronze Stars, a Presidential Unit Citation with ribbon bar, and Navy Unit Commendation with ribbon bar for the Treasury-Bismarck Archipelago operation; Bougainville, Northern Solomons, Marianas, and Okinawa operations of the Asiatic Pacific campaign; as well as the European-African Campaign and Asiatic-Pacific Campaign.
The commanding general of the fleet Marine Forces, Pacific, commended him as having “displayed brilliant tactical and exacting technical skill, and his outstanding qualities of leadership and constant devotion to duty were an inspiration to his men.”
On Sept. 2, 1945, he was one of eight U.S. Marines invited to attend with his command, the signing of the Japanese Surrender on board the USS Missouri in September 1945.
New Year’s Eve, 1942, while temporarily stationed in California, he met the love of his life, Yvonne “Bonnie” Ellen Hopper of Pasadena, Calif. On New Year’s Day, their first date, they attended the Rose Bowl Game together.
For the next three years, while he served overseas during World War II, they shared their romance through hundreds of exchanged letters. They married upon his return in 1945.
For the next 15 years, with their two children, Debbie and Greg, and their dog, Mike, they traveled and lived abroad, sharing adventures in new cultures with new languages.
After his retirement from the Marines, he enlisted in the U.S. Army as a career infantry intelligence specialist where he taught Arctic wilderness survival and mountaineering training.
He completed worldwide service that included Asia, Europe and the United States as an intelligence and operations specialist, including collections, interpretation and analysis of intelligence information and training and supervision of personnel.
He worked once again with James Roosevelt through the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., until retirement.
He attended UCLA and the University of Alaska, and began a second career in university administration as a department director. For the next 20 years, he served on the staff of California Institute of Technology, in Pasadena, Calif., and the University of California, in Long Beach; University of San Francisco; the University of Alaska; American University, in Washington, D.C.; and spent a number of years at Claremont McKenna University, in Claremont, Calif.
He shared his love of golf with his grandsons and nephews. With an eight handicap, he often participated in amateur tournaments with friends at Brentwood and Via Verde country club in California.
Growing up in the woodlands of Pennsylvania, he had a lifelong love of nature and the outdoors, always professing a sense of wonder and awe. He was an avid mountain skier, as well as a fisherman, equally at home in the mountains and on the sea.
He was preceded in death by his parents; by his brother Charles R. Yetsko, a medical corpsman killed in 1952 in the Korean War and sister, Virginia Yetsko.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie E. Yetsko, Bainbridge Island; his daughter Debbie Y. (Richard P.) Vancil, Bainbridge Island; grandson Ryan P. (Debbi Lester) Vancil; great-grandchildren Corbin Lester Vancil and Maddy Reeves Vancil; grandson Joshua P. (Carolina Y.) Vancil; son Gregory J. Yetsko, grandson Daniel J. Yetsko and granddaughter Emily S. Yetsko, all of Ithaca, N.Y.; nephew Dr. Gary Hopper, Monrovia, Calif.; niece Marcia A. Hopper Mantana, Idyllwild, Calif.; nephew Thomas Hopper, Sand Point, Idaho; nephew Edward Hopper, Hemet, Calif.; sister Leah Turnsec, McKeesport, Pa; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. March 9, followed by military honor guard and flag presentation ceremony at St. Cecilia Catholic Church. A reception follows at the Vancil family home on Bainbridge Island.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Booth Gardner Parkinson’s Care Center, Evergreen Healthcare Foundation, (425) 899-1900.

English, Dorothy V. Monday, 20 Feb 2006
Dorothy V. English, 84, of Bainbridge Island died Feb. 20.
She was born on June 7, 1921, in Lawrence, Mass., to Richard Vincent and Alice Deblois.
She earned a bachelor of arts degree at Emanuel College and a master of arts at Simmons College, in Boston.
During her first 15 years as a librarian, she worked at Boston College, the Harvard Museum of Comparative Philology and schools and public libraries in Endicott, N.Y.
She moved to California in 1960, where she worked at Berkeley Public Library and became head of children’s services in Vallejo and San Mateo, Calif. She came to live on Bainbridge Island and accepted a position in 1974 as director of children’s services at Seattle Public Library, from which she retired in 1989.
Among her honors was a life membership to the Association of Children’s Librarians of Northern California. She was the first person to be awarded life membership to the Association of Children’s Librarians of the Puget Sound Council of Children’s Books and Media.
She is survived by her three sons and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 9 a.m. Feb. 24 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church on Bainbridge Island, with interment at Seabold cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Group Health Hospice.

James, Regina Marion O’Donnell Friday, 10 Feb 2006
Former Bainbridge Island resident Regina Marion O’Donnell James died Feb. 10 in Gig Harbor, after suffering a brain aneurysm seven months ago.
She was born Jan. 13, 1949, in Brooklyn, N.Y.
While residing on Bainbridge Island, she managed the Washington State Liquor Store. She retired in 2004 after 26 years of service with the state.
In retirement, she pursued her interests in gardening and developing her 11-acre property in Allyn, with her husband Randy James. She was an active volunteer with animal rescue in Mason County.
She is survived by husband Randy James; stepson Miles; sisters Kathleen (Jeff) Kutz and Eileen O’Donnell; nieces Theresa and Angela; and great-niece Megan.
She was preceded in death by James Ofsthun and survived by stepchildren Mike, Darren (Kathy) and Jamie; and two grandchildren, Kevin and Christina.
The family expressed its thanks to caregivers during her illness, including the neurosurgical team at Harborview Medical Center, Dr. Laligam Sekhar and his staff at Neuro ICU and 3 West.
Memorial services were Feb. 25, with arrangements by Haven of Rest Funeral Home in Gig Harbor. Remembrances may be made to Union Gospel Mission; or HMC at 1325 Fourth Ave., Seattle, WA 98101.

Brown, William R. Tuesday, 20 Aug 2002
William R. “Bill” Brown, age 65, of Bainbridge Island died Aug. 20 at his home on Yeomalt Point, after a three-month battle with cancer.
He was born July 26, 1937 in Pittsburgh, Pa., to Fred and Clare Brown.
He grew up in Pittsburgh where he attended St. Basil High School, becoming very active in speech and debate. He won a number of awards as a member of both the Catholic and National Forensic Leagues.
In 1959 he earned a BA from his hometown Duquesne University. While at the university, he joined the Air Force ROTC and rose to become Cadet Commander of the students his senior year. In 1976, he completed a master’s degree at the University of Dallas.
He served in the Air Force Strategic Air Command, flying B-47 bombers and reaching the rank of captain. In 1964 he left the Air Force for a career with Delta Air Lines.
On July 24, 1976, he married Charlotte Wawrzynski, an American Airlines flight attendant from Chicago, Ill.
During his 33-year career with Delta, he flew most of the airline’s planes: C-46, DC 6/7, DC-9, DC-8, B-727, B-767/757 and L-1011. After serving as a flight-training instructor in Atlanta in his early years with the airline, he settled in Dallas, Tex., where he lived until his retirement in 1997.
He began volunteering in the early 1970s for numerous jobs with the pilots union, the Air Line Pilots Association.
After becoming chairman of the union’s flight safety efforts, he turned his attention to the political arena. He was chosen to represent the Dallas pilots for a number of years before being elected in the early 1980s to be chairman of the Delta pilots union. He was asked to return to that position two more times over the next 15 years.
In 1996-1997, he served as the first pilot member of Delta Air Line’s Board of Directors.
Having fallen in love with Bainbridge in the early 1990s, the couple built a dream home and moved to the island in 1997.
He rapidly become involved in the community and was asked to join boards and committees at his church, St. Cecilia, Bainbridge Performing Arts and Kiwanis. He and Charlotte were also active in Bainbridge Welcome Wagon.
He was also known as an uncompromising Pittsburgh Steelers fan.
He is survived by his wife Charlotte of Bainbridge; daughter daughter Nicole (Troy) Niehaus and three grandchildren, Natalya, Jack William and Priya of Kingston; brothers (Fr.) Richard T. Brown, Robert V. Brown of Woodridge, Ill., and David J. Brown of Tucson, Ar.; sister Kathleen R. McCusker of Pekin, Ill.
Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 23, followed by a rosary service at 7:30 p.m., both at the Stone Chapel in Poulsbo.
A mass will be held at noon on Aug. 24 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church. Pilots are requested to wear uniforms to the mass.
