Phillips, Rhonda J. Sunday, 14 Nov 2004
Rhonda J. Phillips, longtime resident of Bainbridge Island, died Nov. 14. She was 78.
She was born Feb. 17, 1926.
She is survived by her daughter Sharon Kithcart, son-in-law Tim Kithcart and grandson Aaron Kithcart.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Nov. 23 at Christ Memorial Church, Poulsbo, with a reception at the family home.
Baker, Margaret C. “Maggie” Paine Sunday, 14 Nov 2004
Margaret C. “Maggie” Paine Baker, 88, died Nov. 14 at Swedish Providence Memorial Hospital.
She was born Oct. 11, 1916.
A resident of Bainbridge Island for 21 years, she previously lived in Dubuque, Iowa.
While in Iowa, she owned and operated the Dubuque Beauty Academy and served as president of the Iowa State Cosmetology Board for several years.
She also was an instructor for the Northeast Iowa Community College.
Upon moving to Bainbridge Island, she became active in St. Cecelia Church and the VFW. Over the years she also spent many hours caring for the children of many families.
She is survived by two daughters Dee (Wayne) Vestal of Tampa, Fla., and Deborah Paine of Seattle; one son Howie (Vicki) Paine of Bainbridge Island; three grandchildren, Chris Mendell, Nashville, Tenn., Travis Paine Turnsen, San Francisco, Calif. and Cameron Paine-Thaler, Seattle; and two great-grandchildren and two nieces, Tana Paine (Monte) Parrish, Ames, Iowa, and Stephanie Paine, San Diego, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Mary Howard; and her husbands John Paine and Bill Baker.
Following cremation, a mass will be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 22 at St. Cecelia Catholic Church with reception following.

Johnston, James Jay “Artie” Thursday, 11 Nov 2004
James Jay “Artie” Johnston, 48, died Nov. 11 after a four-year battle with cancer.
He was born Jan. 9, 1956, in Spokane, to Alson and Ida Mae Johnston.
The family moved to Bainbridge Island, where he attended school and graduated in 1974.
He enjoyed sports, playing on local softball teams with his many friends.
After high school, he worked a few odd jobs, including a Fish and Wildlife Protection Officer for two summers in Alaska.
In 1980 he became the third generation of Johnstons to work for Pacific Northwest Bell, and stayed with that firm for the next 25 years.
In 1995 he seized an opportunity with work to move his growing family back to his hometown of Spokane.
Once back, he took on a new position in marketing, and later as a field operations supervisor, managing an “elite” team of CD technicians.
He enjoyed flying, camping with his family and swimming in Long Lake. He truly enjoyed life,
He is survived by his wife Gail; parents Ida Mae and Alson; sister Katherine; sons Christopher and Matthew, and daughters Amanda and Nicole.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 20, at Heritage Funeral Chapel, Spokane.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to: Jim Johnston Children’s Memorial Fund, c/o Sterling Savings Bank, Private Banking, 111 N. Wall, 2nd Floor, Spokane, WA 99201. A trust fund was set up at Washington Mutual in James Johnston’s name by his friends at Qwest.

Allen, Arnold John Friday, 15 Oct 2004
Arnold John Allen of Poulsbo died Oct. 15. He was 83.
He was born July 18, 1921, in Tacoma to Patrick and Mae Allen, and graduated from Buckley High School in 1939.
On Aug. 5, 1943, he married
Patricia Crowder. They raised two sons at Point White on Bainbridge Island.
After 39 years with Pacific Northwest Bell as an engineer, he retired in 1979. He and his wife traveled all over the Northwest, fishing every river as far north as Canada and south to California. Known to have tackle boxes for each kind of fish, he was always prepared at a moment’s notice.
He was a fan of the Huskies and was a season-ticket holder for many years, traveling to the Rose Bowl on more than one occasion. Always the last one to finish a meal, he was a great teller of stories at the table.
He is survived by his sons David of Poulsbo and Les (Shirley) of Everett; and four grandchildren: Amy Allen of Kingston, Andrew Allen of Poulsbo, Danielle Allen of Issaquah, and Marci Allen of Everett.
He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia and daughter-in-law Mary Allen.

Stern, S. Roger Saturday, 13 Nov 2004
S. Roger Stern, 66, died Nov. 13 at his home on Blakely Harbor.
He was born Aug. 16, 1938, in California, but moved to the Magnolia neighborhood of Seattle before he was three months old.
He attended both Magnolia Grade School and Catherine Blaine Junior High School, and graduated from Queen Anne High School in 1956.
The beginning of his sophomore year at Queen Anne he met Anne Hamilton, who later became his wife of almost 48 years.
Following graduation, he volunteered for a two-year assignment in the U.S. Navy’s submarine service. He graduated from the Submarine Academy at New London, Conn., and was assigned to the USS Diodon, where he became a sonarman, petty officer third class.
After discharge from the Navy, he earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and a master’s degree in general engineering at the University of Washington
He worked for Bell Systems for 30 years. Part of that time covered the beginning of data communication. He was asked to be part of a nationwide team of engineers who met in Cooperstown, N.Y., to study and develop products to serve the computer data communication industry.
One well-known product that emerged from the effort was the “mag strip” card reader, the first telphone terminal that could read a magnetically encoded strip of recording tape attached to a plastic card.
Following retirement from the phone company, he worked in Winslow for the engineering firm DLI, traveling to various naval ships to do vibration and stress analysis. He was employed for a time with NorEastern Trawl Systems, where he assisted with the Ocean Spar anchoring system.
He and wife moved to Bainbridge Island in the late 1960s, seeing it as a good location to raise a family and enjoy boating on Puget Sound.
He built his first seaworthy vessel at age 9, followed by a 26-foot Thunderbird sailboat while in graduate school. There are presently five, 15-foot rowboats on Bainbridge Island built by him and his neighbor.
He is surived by his wife Anne, daughter Michelle (Bill) Bressler; son Sam; four grandchildren; his father, a sister and a brother and their spouses.
At his request there will be no public service, but the family hopes his friends “will hold a happy thought for the day.”
Boggs, Harold A. Friday, 22 Oct 2004
Bainbridge Island resident Harold A. “Hal” Boggs, Jr., age 70, died Oct. 22 at Wyatt House.
He was born Aug. 5, 1934 in Memphis, Tenn., to Harold A. Boggs, Sr. and Mary Louise (Todd) Boggs.
He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1957. He served in the Navy as a pilot and later as a flight instructor on the venerable A-4s.
While attending Naval post-graduate school in Monterrey, Calif., he met and later married
Judy Ann Ecklund on May 25, 1963 in Reno, Nev.
During his career, he worked at Corning Glass Company from 1965-1980 in sales and finance; Pfizer, Inc. in Columbia, Md., and Fairfield, Ct., and at Boeing in Seattle from 1988-1996, also in finance.
He was a fine watercolorist and art enthusiast, an avid reader and interested in politics.
He spent his last days surrounded by his loved ones and died peacefully.
He is survived by two daughters, Lisa McCabe, Seattle; Shannon Dow, Bainbridge Island and one granddaughter, Hailey Todd McCabe, Seattle.

Poulsbo resident Martin Tonnessen, 83, died Jan. 31.
He was born Feb. 21, 1921, in Denbigh, N.D., to Oscar and Zena (Cornish) Tonnessen.
He married
Bonnie D. Burke on Dec. 8, 1961 in Milton, Wash.
He was a pipefitter for area shipyards, including Washington State Ferries.
He is survived by his wife Bonnie D. Tonnessen; sons David Tonnessen of Poulsbo, Steve Tonnessen of Spokane and Donald (Robin) Tonnessen of Tacoma; daughter Sharon (Paul) Utley of Covington; brothers Harry (Virginia) Tonnessen of Milton, Fla., Richard Tonnessen of Kerrville, Texas, and Kenneth Tonnessen of Towner, N.D., Gerald (Margo) Tonnessen of Bainbridge Island; sisters Dorothy (Daniel) Richter of Rugby, N.D., Annabelle (C.L.) Banta of Bremerton and Leona Tonnessen of Deer Park; and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Feb. 6 at Central Kitsap Presbyterian Church in Bremerton. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Stone Chapel. Donations can be sent to Parkinson’s Disease Association, 1959 N.E. Pacific St., Seattle, WA 98195.
Avitabile, Edith Dugan Thursday, 27 Jan 2005
Edith C. Dugan “Edie” Avitabile, 91, of Pinellas Park, Fla., died Jan. 27 in Largo, Fla.
She was born in New York City and moved to St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1975, from Hackensack, N.J.
She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and was past president of the Ladies of Knights of Columbus, St. Petersburg Council.
She retired after 20 years of service as a loan and certification clerk for Chase Manhattan Bank.
During World War II, she worked for Gruman, manufacturing ammunition shells.
She enjoyed bingo, dancing, playing cards, music, going to Las Vegas and going on cruises.
She is survived by her son John J. “Jack” Dugan of Bainbridge Island; daughters Mary Ellen Martino and Eleanor V. Rachon, both of St. Petersburg, Fla., Kathleen C. Benson of Indian Shores, Fla. and Barbara E. Butler of New York City; and 15 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Memorial Park Funeral Home, St. Petersburg.
Thompson, Norma Lucille Friday, 28 Jan 2005
Former island resident Norma Lucille Thompson, 93, died Jan. 28 at her home in Lacey.
She was born on Dec. 17, 1911, and resided on Bainbridge Island for 53 years.
She retired from the Bainbridge Island School District in 1974. While on the island she was a member of the Wing Point Golf and Country Club and the Poulsbo Yacht Club.
She and her husband, Alden, moved to Panorama City in Lacey in 1999.
Her husband preceded her in death in December 1999.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Ken Cumle, Lacey, three grandchildren, three great grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
