Schaffer, Hazel J. Wednesday, 05 May 2004
Hazel June Schaffer, age 83, of Bainbridge Island, died May 5 at Harrison Hospital in Bremerton.
She was born June 29, 1920, in Portland, Ore., to Virgil R. and Beatrice (Beach) King. She was raised in Portland, and came to Washington in 1940.
She was a homemaker. During World War II, she worked at Keyport Naval Undersea Warfare Center; there, she met her husband Otto J. Schaffer, who was serving in the Army.
In her later years, she was self-employed on Bainbridge Island. She enjoyed dancing, bingo, gardening, sewing, crafts and traveling. She was a member of Olympic Baptist Church of Edmonds, and Bremerton Ladies of Elk.
She is survived by daughter Candice M. (Randy) Jernigan of Silverdale; sons Ken Schaffer of Seattle and Jack Ring of Kingston; sister Jean Steele of Edmonds; and seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by hers sons Loren and Francis, and her daughter Beatrice.
Services will be at 11 a.m. May 11 at the Stone Chapel, Poulsbo, with graveside services at 3 p.m. that day at Floral Hills cemetery in Lynnwood.

Powell, Florence Edna Wednesday, 05 May 2004
Florence Edna Powell of Bainbridge Island died May 5 at Messenger House.
She was born Jan. 27, 1920, in Toledo, Ohio, the daughter of Frank and Nellie (Tyburska) Wawrzyniak. She graduated from Central Catholic High School (Toledo) in 1938, where she met future husband, Ralph Powell. They were married
June 8, 1940.
She worked in various retail dress shops and enjoyed reading.
She is survived by daughters Lynne Stockwell of Tallahassee, Fla., and Jill Jepson of Bainbridge Island; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Interment will be at Ottawa Hills cemetery, Toledo, Ohio. Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home.
Mershon, Caren C. Tuesday, 04 May 2004
Longtime Bainbridge Island resident Caren C. Mershon, 86, died May 4.
She was born Feb. 9, 1918, daughter of Hans and Catherine Christian. She lived in Pacifica Palisades, Calif., before coming to Bainbridge Island.
She was active with Friends of the Library and various book clubs and enjoyed embroidery, classical music concerts, reading and supporting many local charities.
She was preceded in death by husband Boies Mershon in 1983.

Johnsen, Amy J. Tuesday, 04 May 2004
Longtime Bainbridge Island resident, Amy J. Johnsen, age 75, died May 4 at her home.
She was born March 13, 1929 in Chicago, Ill., to Emil and Lucy (Bispala) Johnson.
She went to school at Haite Grade School with the same school members through Senn High School in the same locality.
Amy started nurse’s training in March 1947 at Northwestern University via Wesley Hospital in Chicago, Ill., and finished three years later in 1950 in time to take “State of Illinois Boards” thus becoming a Registered Nurse in Illinois.
She then was employed at Research and Education Hospital in Chicago.
On the evening of Nov. 22, 1950 she was married
to J. Robert Johnsen at Lutheran Church on Wilson Ave. in Chicago.
They moved to Champaign, Ill., where J. Robert was in school at University of Illinois. Amy was Head Nurse of Carl Hospital at Champaign until J. Robert graduated in June of 1952.
The day after graduation they loaded all their possessions in the car and went to Denver, Colorado. There she was a Head Nurse on the infant floor of Denver Children’s Hospital until they moved to Bainbridge Island, where they have lived since.
They have been members of Bethany Lutheran Church since 1955 and Amy was a member of P.E.O. since 1963.
Amy loved to do crafts, especially beadwork, travel and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her husband, J. Robert Johnsen, Bainbridge Island; son Brian Johnsen, Renton; daughter Claire Chavanu and grandsons Andrew and Kyle Chavanu, Bainbridge Island; daughter Sandra Johnsen Sahleen and grandson Cole and grand daughter Karsen Sahleen.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. May 20 at Bethany Lutheran Church.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home, Bainbridge Island.
Narte, Jaime Peralta Saturday, 01 May 2004
Jaime Peralta Narte, age 79, of Bainbridge Island, died May 1 at Messenger House Care Center.
He was born March 9, 1925 in Luna, La Union, the Philippines to Felipe and Catalina (Peralta) Narte.
He came to Bainbridge Island in 1949 and worked in the strawberry fields. Later, with his uncle, Felix Narte, he worked in the salmon canneries in Alaska.
For nine years he worked at Washington Fish and Oyster in Seattle. When he wasn’t working, he attended the University of Washington and graduated with a degree in engineering. This led to a career at Boeing where he worked for 30 years, retiring in 1991.
He enjoyed gardening and landscaping, reading Louis L’Amour novels, spending time with his family, his cats and his dog, Andy. He worked on the Filipino American community center, helping to bring it to use.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Narte, Bainbridge Island; seven sons, Jaime Narte, the Philippines; Jaime Narte, Wenatchee; Phillip D. Narte, Glacier, Wash.; Myron “Tony” Narte, Poulsbo; Mario V. Narte, Chilliwack, B.C.; Dante E. Narte, Bainbridge Island; Moreno C. Peralta, Bainbridge Island; four daughters, Linda Buccat, the Philippines; Adelina Singson, Maple Falls, Wash.; Deborah Smith, Bainbridge Island; Catalina Renteria, Chilliwack, B.C.; and 25 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A wake was held May 5, with mass May 6 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church and burial at Island Center cemetery.

Anderson, Olive L. Tuesday, 27 Apr 2004
Olive L. Anderson, 93, died April 27 at Island Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born Oct. 25, 1910, in Pueblo, Colo., to Charles Herman and Laura (Newcomb) Greene.
During her childhood, she lived in many states in the South and West, as her father was involved in early railroad building.
She married
Oscar F. Anderson in Binghamton, N.Y., on Jan. 31, 1929. He died in 1979.
She worked in retail sales, and enjoyed traveling as well as the homemaking arts.
She is survived by her son Charles F. Anderson and his wife Ruth of Bainbridge Island; her daughter Susan Wilson of Bandera, Texas; her grandsons Jason Wilson of Denver, Colo., and Matthew Anderson and his wife Julie of Santa Rosa, Calif.; her granddaughter Kathryn Pompeo and her husband Philip of SeaTac; and two great-granddaughters, Maggie and Fiona Anderson.
She was preceded in death by her brothers Donald and Carson Greene and her sister Winifred Wright.
Services will be private. Interment will be in Vestal Hills cemetery in Binghamton, N.Y.

Grotle, Bertha Thursday, 01 Jul 2004
Bainbridge native Bertha Grotle, 91, died July 1 in Seattle.
She was born April 28, 1913 on Bainbridge. She served her country in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a nurse, and continued her career as a nurse for the next 50 years.
She is survived by her niece, Karolin Highland, and nephews Ken, Del and Mark Grotle.
Services are 11 a.m. July 8 at Wiggen and Sons Funeral Home, 2003 NW 57th St., Seattle.
Graveside services are 11 a.m. July 9 at Kane cemetery on Bainbridge Island. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimers Foundation.
Ugles, Mary Amelia Monday, 17 May 2004
Mary Amelia Ugles died May 17 in Santa Monica, Calif.
She was born Nov. 8, 1924, at Eagledale on Bainbridge Island, to Sam and Milica Ugles.
She worked as an administrative assistant in insurance and banking in Seattle, Hawaii and Santa Monica, Calif., until her retirement.
She is survived by her sister Carmel (David) Myers, brother Pete (Velora) Ugles, sister-in-law Molly Ugles, and five nieces and six nephews. She was preceded in death by brother John Ugles.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. July 24 at Holyrood cemetery, 205 NE 205th St. in Seattle. Donations can be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Guyman, Walter Wednesday, 30 Jun 2004
Walter Guyman, 89, died June 30 at his Bainbridge Island home.
He was born Feb . 12, 1915, in Edmonton, Alberta, to Mathew and Annie (Berry) Guyman.
He attended high school in West Seattle, graduating in 1935.
He married
Marjorie McCauley on April 21, 1945.
He was a service station owner and real estate agent, retiring in 1975. He was a member of the Wing Point Golf and Country Club, and enjoyed fishing and traveling.
He is survived by his wife Marjorie; sons Douglas Guyman of Medina and Gregory Guyman of Mercer Island; and grandchildren Jeffrey, Laura, Elizabeth, William and Catharine.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. July 11 at Wing Point Golf and Country Club.
Randish, Matthew J. Monday, 28 Jun 2004
Matthew John Randish, 83, died peacefully June 28 at his home in Kirkland.
He was born Dec. 20, 1920, in Seattle, to Matthew and Vinka Randish, and was raised with two brothers and two sisters in the Ballard neighborhood.
His parents, who had immigrated from Yugoslavia and started with very little, were successful grocery retailers and had their own markets, Randish Grocery.
Matthew went to school in Ballard for grade school and graduated from Edmonds High School.
After high school, he started working for his father in their store on Queen Anne. He then joined the service to enter World War II in the medical corps.
After basic training, he was sent to Korea, and was in the first landing party. He later served in Okinawa, Japan.
After the service, he went to Seattle University, then started work in the grocery industry and managed for Safeway and then Big Bear stores, which later became Lucky food stores. He managed many Lucky store openings.
He then went to work for the IGA warehouse in Bellevue, later American Strivell grocery. He was the designer for a new store development for independent grocery store owners. Stores he set up included the first three IGA stores in Kitsap County.
When he set up the Madrona IGA on East Union in Seattle, he liked the store so much he bought it himself and ran it successfully for 20 years. He retired from the store in 1982, then helped his sons in their businesses.
He was an avid card player, from poker to bridge. He was a life member of the College Club of Seattle and a great dancer who loved to boat. Cars, familiy and traveling were his favorites, and he loved his children and grandchildren.
He is surived by his wife Margaret of Kirkland, to whom he was married
for more than 50 years; daughter Joan of Bellevue and Matthew of Bainbridge Island; and grandchildren Jennifer and Christopher.
Funeral services were July 2 at Holy Family Church in Kirkland, with burial at Sunset Hills cemetery. Arrangements were by the Colonial Chapel, Green Funeral Home of Kirkland.
McFadden, Austin ‘Barney’ Wednesday, 23 Jun 2004
Austin “Barney” McFadden of Kingston died June 23 in Poulsbo. He was 82.
McFadden was born to Austin P. and Nora (O’Grady) McFadden in Worcester, Mass. on April 18, 1922, and graduated from St. Peter’s High School in Worcester, Mass.
He married
Helen D. Rukosky on Dec. 11, 1943 in Brooklyn, N.Y. He served in the U.S. Navy for seven years, achieving the rank of pharmacist’s mate first class. He then worked in pharmaceutical sales for more than 30 years until his retirement in 1980.
He was a member of the Exchange Club, American Legion and the 76ers Golf Club in Michigan City, Ind.
A service was held June 24 at the Stone Chapel in Poulsbo.
