Greggerson, V. Kenneth Thursday, 08 Apr 2004
V. Kenneth Greggerson, age 92, of Bainbridge Island, died peacefully April 8 at Messenger House Care Center, with his famly at his side.
He was born June 4, 1911 in Spokane, and married
wife Virginia on July 28, 1933.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in 1933 at the University of Idaho, and was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity and Alpha Kappa Psi.
He made a career in plastics as a factory representative. He also was a member of the Masonic Lodge, and served as a Justice of the Peace.
He is survived by his wife Virginia Greggerson and daughter Beverley Greggerson, both of Bainbridge Island; and two granchildren and one great-grandchild.
Private services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
Judith Sola, Judith Wednesday, 07 Apr 2004
Longtime Bainbridge Island resident Judith Sola, age 89, died April 7 at Harrison Hospital in Bremerton.
She was born Aug. 16, 1914 in Norway.
She taught Sunday school at Port Madison Lutheran Church and was active in the church.
She enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, taking cruises and visiting Norway.
In her younger years she enjoyed entertaining friends in her home.
She is survived by one son, Larry Sola, Bainbridge Island.
Graveside services will be held at 12:30 p.m. April 13 at Port Madison cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home.
Anderson, Elwood Marvin Friday, 02 Apr 2004
Bainbridge Island resident Elwood Marvin Anderson, age 89, died April 2 at Island Health and Rehabilitation on Bainbridge Island.
He was born Feb. 20, 1915 in Enderlin, N.D., son of Jens and Ragna (Husemoen) Anderson.
Elwood got his first job as a 13-year-old chauffeur to a county commissioner from North Dakota.
Later he worked at Peterson and Peterson in Enderlin delivering groceries in his panel truck.
He spent 40 years as a brakeman/conductor on the Soo Line Railroad between Minnesota and North Dakota.
He retired in 1975 and he and his wife, Ruth, moved to Seattle to be near their daughters.
He enjoyed golf, playing the harmonica and the accordion on which he was self-taught.
He enjoyed woodworking and looked forward to every spring and the beginning of the Seattle Mariners season.
He is survived by his two daughters, Marvel Loria, Bainbridge Island; Jean Storelee, Port Orchard; one brother, Vernon (Leila) Anderson, Enderlin, N.D.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
His wife, Ruth, in 2002; one sister, Margaret; three brothers, Henry, Elmer, and Norman; and one grandson, David Loria, in 1987, all preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. April 12 at First Lutheran Church, 2438 Mitchell Road, in Port Orchard.
A graveside inurnment service will be held at Port Blakely cemetery on Bainbridge Island at 11 a.m. April 24.
The funeral arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home.
Meacham, Eleanor C. Thursday, 01 Apr 2004
Eleanor C. Meacham, 90, of Bainbridge Island, died April 1 at Swedish Hospital in Seattle.
She was born Dec. 22, 1913, in Vancouver, B.C., to Cliff and Lillian Watson.
Her family moved to Long Lake near Port Orchard to run a lumber mill, later moving to Phoenix, Ariz., where she graduated from high school. She then returned to her native Canada to acquire a nursing degree.
At age 26, she moved to Seward, Alaska to work as a registered nurse. It was here that she would meet her husband, William A. Meacham, an engineer and Naval Reserve officer. Wartime saw them stationed in Washington, D.C.; Annapolis, Md.; and California. They and their children settled at Port Madison on Bainbridge Island in 1946.
She was an independent spirit, always swift to defend the voiceless: the birds, otters and other wildlife. She always told stories of ocean exploration – storms in which the mast of the sailboat touched the water – and desert camping trips. Sailing to Alaska and exploring the Inside Passage and Puget Sound was a pastime which four generations of her family enjoyed.
The family also enjoyed mooring the sailboat at Port Angeles in the winter so they could ski and snowshoe Hurricane Ridge.
Beside sailing and canoeing the Northwest, she enjoyed hiking the Olympic Mountains, gardening, helping with 4-H projects, Girl Scouts, Campfire Girls and Boy Scouts. She worked as a relief nurse at the Winslow Clinic.
After her husband died in 1997, she lived alone at their “sandspit” cabin at Point Monroe, with her nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren enjoying summer visits. She helped organize the annual 4th of July celebration that included a community parade and a 21-gun salute.
She is survived by children William (Colleen) Meacham of Kirkland, Mike (Connie) Meacham of Anchorage, Kathleen (Peter) Turner of Seattle, and Pat Pasini of Helena, Mont.
A gathering of family and friends was held April 4.
Samek, Richard D. Tuesday, 23 Mar 2004
Former Bainbridge Island resident Richard D. Samek of East Lansing, Mich., died March 23. He was 69.
He was born March 3, 1935 in Alliance, Neb., to Melvin H. and Anne L. (Cherry) Samek, and grew up on Bainbridge Island.
He was an avid reader and sports fan, and enjoyed music, history and flower gardening.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon Ann; daughter Kristen (Robert) Schmidt of Gresham, Ore.; son Jay (Manilla) Samek of Lansing, Mich.; grandchildren Sarah (Jordan) Adams, stationed in the U.S. Army in South Korea, Rachiny Samek of Lansing, Mich., and Noah Dean Schmidt of Gresham, Ore.; sister Jeanne (Joe) Shull of Lakeland, Fla.; brother-in-law David Erickson of Woodinville, Wash., and several neices and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Lynette Erickson.
Services will be at 2 p.m. March 26 at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. East Chapel in East Lansing, Mich., with the Rev. David A. Davis officiating.
Kilmer, Edith Mae Saturday, 20 Mar 2004
Poulsbo resident Edith Mae Kilmer, age 98, died March 20 at Martha and Mary nursing home in Poulsbo.
She was born Oct. 8, 1905, in Nebraska, the daughter of James and Nancy (Case) Hansberry.
She graduated from high school in Eastern Washington.
On March 26, 1923, she married
Eugene C. (Jerry) Kilmer. They made their home on the Olympic Peninsula, where he was a logger and she was a homemaker.
She became a licensed beautician and operated a salon in Port Gamble and later managed salons in Suquamish and then Kingston. Later she changed careers and worked as a nurse’s aide before retiring at age 72. She and her daughter then moved to Port Townsend, where she enjoyed family and friends.
She is survived by one son, Bill Kilmer, of Molalla, Ore.; one daughter, Evah Summers, Poulsbo; seven grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Lela Kilmer and Gene Worsey.
A graveside inurnment will be held at 1 p.m. March 26 at Seabold cemetery on Bainbridge Island.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home.
Birum, Irene Thursday, 13 May 2004
Irene Birum, age 93, died May 13 at Messenger House Care Center on Bainbridge Island.
She was born Feb. 5, 1911, in Claremore, Okla., to Addison and Gerrette Carlton. She grew up in Yakima with her family of four sisters and three brothers.
She married
Ralph Birum on June 25, 1933. She was a fulltime housewife until 1946, living in Wenatchee and Tacoma, and Missoula, Mont.
In 1946 she and her husband owned and operated an ice creamery and delicatessen in Puyallup, which continued until 1955.
At that time they moved to Mountlake Terrace, where they owned and operated a hardware store until 1964. After that she worked for the University of Washington and the City of Mountlake Terrace until 1969.
Throughout her life she enjoyed cooking, gardening, and flower arranging as special hobbies. She gave willingly of her time to help her family and others.
In 1998 she and Ralph moved from Everett to Bainbridge Island to reside at the Madison Avenue Retirement Center.
After 68 years of marriage Ralph preceded her in death in December 2001. She was also preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
She is survived by sister June of Tyler Texas; brother Don of Yakima; sons Larry (Mary Kay) of Mesquite Nev., and Ron (Linda) of Bainbridge Island; grandchildren Derrick of Duvall, D’Layne of Lewisville Texas, Kevin of Suquamish, Julie of Alameda California; and six great-grandchildren.
A family memorial celebration will be held after the Fourth of July. Remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Bucklin, C. Vann Friday, 07 May 2004
C. Vann Bucklin of Bainbridge Island died May 7 at Island Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was the last survivor of five boys born to island pioneers Robert Eben and Hattie Bucklin.
He was born May 2, 1912, in Port Orchard, and came to the island at age 4 and stayed the rest of his life. He grew up on the family farm, went to island schools and attended Washington State College.
After a stint in the Civilian Conservation Corps, he held management positions with Chevron; Naval Shipyard Winslow during World War II; the Washington State Parks Department during Gov. Arthur Langley’s administration; Olympic Foundry; and Minnick Realty.
Always active in local affairs, he served for many years on the Bainbridge school board and the Bainbridge Island Historical Society; as a member and president of Bainbridge Rotary; and was as lifetime member of the Sportsmen’s Club. He played the drums in local bands, and was a sought-after MC for events. He was an avid reader and a lifelong correspondence-school student.
After retirement, he became a hobby woodworker, donating hundreds of wooden toys to the Marine Corps toy drive, the Historical Society and Helpline. He was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Grace, in 1989. He is survived by daughters Elizabeth and Sally; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Memorials can be made to Helpline House. Arrangements are by Miller Woodlawn; no services are planned.
Anderson, Florence Hill Friday, 07 May 2004
Catherine Florence Hill Anderson, 102, of Bremerton, died May 7 at Island Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born July 30, 1901, in Fond du Lac, Wisc., to Walter A. and Ida Mae Hill. She attended school in Enderline, N.D.
She married
Russell Anderson on Dec. 6, 1923, in Moorhead, Minn. She and her husband were farmers until 1926, when they moved to Spring Valley, Wisc., to become shopkeepers in a variety store.
In 1931, they returned to Enderline and opened their own store, which they operated until the Depression; they then moved to Bremerton, where she worked as a supply clerk at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard during the war.
She was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star; she was a member of the Lutheran faith, and attended United Methodist Church in Bremerton.
She is survived by nieces Myrna Hill Johnson of Bainbridge Island, Barbara Hill Stanley of Ranch Mirage, Calif., Sandra Hill of Keyport, Ardis Fretland Brown of Roseburg, Ore., and Lois Fretland Newby of Orange, Calif.; nephew Fredrick Bohm, Jr., of Enderlin, N.D.; sister-in-law Jessie McCarthy of St. Paul, Minn.; and many grandnieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her sisters Doris Fretland and Gladys Bohm, and brother James L. Hill.
A small family gathering will be held at the mausoleum at Forest Lawn cemetery, Bremerton.
Caro II, Lucien A. Friday, 07 May 2004
Former Bainbridge resident Lucien A. Caro II, age 85, of Sequim, died May 7 at his home.
He was born April 28, 1919, in Louisiana to Lucien A. Caro Sr. and Louise Seicshnaydre.
He served in the Army in the European and Pacific theaters in World War II, and was discharged at the rank of staff sergeant.
He moved to Kenai, Alaska, in 1947, and married
Virginia L. Eide on Feb. 24, 1957, in that town.
He was a owner/operator of Luke’s Welding and Stran Steel Buildings in Kenai.
He was also a skilled woodworker, and enjoyed reading and music.
He was a past member of Holy Rollers RV Club and the North Olympic Fruit Club. He enjoyed growing sweet peas, which he shared with friends and neighbors.
He lived on Bainbridge Island before moving to Sequim.
He is survived by his wife Virginia, of Sequim; sons Nick Miller of Kenai, and Terry Miller of Anchorage, Alaska, and Lucien A. Caro III of Bainbridge Island; daughters Kathi Reynolds of Fairbanks, Alaska, Melinda Gascon of Breaux Bridge, La., and Beth Feller of Washington; and 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
Services were May 29 at Trinity Methodist Church in Sequim; his ashes will be scattered at Kenai at a later date.
