Hendricks, Robert Friday, 06 Sep 2002
Robert Hendricks, age 94, died Sept. 6 at Horizon House in Seattle.
He was born May 17, 1908 in Kaslo, B.C., to Robert Hendricks and Elizabeth Ann Thatcher. He was educated at Washington State University, where he graduated in 1929.
In 1932, he married to Mildred Bernice Hayton of Mount Vernon.
A metallurgical engineer and mining executive, he spent his entire professional career with the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada (Cominco), where he rose from a member of the assay staff to CEO and chairman.
He was preceded in death by Mildred, his devoted wife of 54 years. He is survived by his companion Jane Pelly of Seattle; his son Robert Wayne and daughter-in-law Delores Black Hendricks of Blacksburg, Va.; his daughter Judith Anne Brown and son-in-law George Brown of Bainbridge; five grandchildren – Christopher Brown and Sarah Barnett of Washington, D.C., James and Elizabeth Hendricks of Superior, Colo., Eric and Sacha Brown of Altadena, Calif., Kathleen and Christian Hill of Everett and Karen and Brian Chemel of Salem, Mass.; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Sept. 21 at Horizon House, with interment at the family plot in Mount Vernon on Sept. 22.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Residents’ Assistance Fund at Horizon House.

Biggs, Ann Louise Wednesday, 04 Sep 2002
Ann Louise Biggs, age 81, died Sept. 4. She was born March 11, 1921 in Spokane to Earle and Marion Walden. She grew up in Laurelhurst and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1938.
She later graduated from Metropolitan Business College. In 1940, she married Ernest G. Biggs.
She was an active volunteer in youth groups, Children’s Hospital and Goodwill Industries. She enjoyed dancing, sewing, gardening, painting and music.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years; children Linda (David) Swolgaard, Peter (Leanne) Biggs and Bryon Biggs, all of Bainbridge; David (Kathy) Biggs of Sebastolpol, Calif.; Carol (Hal) Kummerow of Sitka, Alaska; and Robin (Don) Gann of Cloverdale, Ore.; 11 grandchildren and a sister, Mary Taggart.
A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Hospice of Kitsap County or the Eagle Harbor Congregational Church.

Hagan, Arthur W. Monday, 02 Sep 2002
Arthur W. Hagan, age 89, died Sept. 2 at his home on Bainbridge.
He was born Feb. 8, 1913 in Seattle to Charles and Ida May (Sweet) Hagan. His father immigrated to the United States from Sweden in 1906.
He graduated from Ballard High School in 1931 and Wilson and Peterson Business Schools, and attended University of Washington.
He served in the U.S. Army for three years during World War II. He retired from the Seattle District Army Corp of Engineers in 1973 to a home he and his wife built on Bainbridge.
He was a lifetime member of Ballard Golden Beavers, Masonic Occidental Lodge No. 72 and Wing Point Golf and Country Club. An avid golfer, he began playing in his teens as a caddy at Olympic Golf Club. The highlight of his golfing years was playing at St. Andrew’s in Scotland in 1961.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Agnes C. (McKinley) Hagan, of Bainbridge; one sister, Edith Maines of Seattle; and numerous nieces and nephews: Judy (Ed) Pedersen, Dan (Cleone) Maines; Chatham, Blaize and Daimon Curry; Jennifer and Janet Maines, Bridget (John) Montgomery, Bryan (Mary Sue) Pedersen. He was preceded in death in 2001 by his youngest sister, Bernice Hagan.
A celebration of his life will be held at 4 p.m. Oct. 5 at Wing Point Golf and Country Club.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home.

Smith, Larry A. Monday, 02 Sep 2002
Larry A. Smith, age 55, of Bainbridge Island died Sept. 2 at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle.
He was born Jan. 25, 1947 in Grants Pass, Ore. to Victor J. Smith and Jewel Bernice (Butler) Muller.
He graduated from N. Kitsap High School in 1965. From 1966 to 1972, he served in the U.S. Army, attaining the rank of SP-4 and receiving bronze service stars.
For the next 35 years, he led a career as a self-employed contractor.
He was a member of the Harley Riding Club.
He is survived by three sisters – Diana Anderson of Stanwood; Debbie Mowell of San Antonio, Texas; and Jewel May of Tacoma.
Services were held Sept. 7 under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home in Bremerton.

Henderson, Percy Francis Wednesday, 28 Aug 2002
Bainbridge native Percy Francis Henderson, age 90, died Aug. 28 at Martha & Mary Health Care Center in Poulsbo.
He was born Nov. 20, 1911 at his family’s home on Parfitt Avenue in Winslow to Percy G. and Irma (Wright) Henderson and was a lifelong resident of Bainbridge until moving to Martha & Mary in 1996.
He attended Bainbridge schools, graduating from Bainbridge High School in 1930. He fished in Alaska from the 1930s to the early 1960s, serving as engineer on the fishing boat Cypress. Later he worked as a groundskeeper for the Seattle School District until his retirement in 1977.
In 1952 he married Eleanora Van Pelt. The couple divorced in 1980.
He was a charter member of Bainbridge Aeire No. 3586 Fraternal Order of Eagles. He served as president in the 1980s and volunteered in the organization’s bingo hall for many years.
Interested in Bainbridge Island history, he was a member of the Bainbridge Island Historical Society; his recollections were featured in the book, “Glimpses of Bainbridge, ” by Phoebe Smith (1992). He was also an avid reader and tinkerer.
He is survived by children David Henderson and wife Barbara Allen of Tucson, Ariz., Susan Henderson Neese and husband Steve Norberg of Port Angeles, Percy Henderson and wife Marlys of Seattle and Michael Henderson of Suquamish; step-children Victoria Farnsworth and husband Neil of Federal Way, and Warren Van Pelt and Jerry Van Pelt, both of Bremerton; grandchildren Garrett Neese, Walter, Clare, and Eleanor Allen-Henderson, Angela Hamilton, Sheri Ellermeier, Ann Uluilakepa and Wendy, Kristi, and Nick Van Pelt. He is also survived by sister Ariel Stranne of Bainbridge Island and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Jessie Komedal, Virginia Komedal, and Kathleen Kolehmain, and brother Wilson “Bill” Henderson.
A graveside service will be held at 2:15 p.m. Sept. 7 at Seabold cemetery. A reception will follow at Seabold Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bainbridge Island Historical Society, 7650 NE High School Road, Bainbridge Island, WA 98110 or Martha & Mary Health Care Center, PO Box 127, Poulsbo, WA 98370.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home, Bainbridge Island.

Minster, Phyllis Louise Saturday, 24 Aug 2002
Bainbridge native Phyllis Louise Minster, age 91, died Aug. 24 at Martha and Mary Health Care Center in Poulsbo.
She was born in the Port Blakely neighborhood of Bainbridge on Nov. 2, 1910, to Alfred and Amanda Anderson.
She attended the Port Blakely grade school until it closed in 1925. She graduated from Olympic High School (now Bainbridge High School) in 1929.
She raised her two sons on her own and held numerous jobs throughout her life. She worked at the Bainbridge Island strawberry cannery from 1939 until 1940; the Winslow Shipyard from 1941 until 1945; the Bremerton Naval Shipyard (PSNS) from 1946 until 1948; and the Society Candy Company until her retirement in 1975.
She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church for many years and was one of the first to help establish the Senior Friendship Club, now known as the Senior Center. She also spent a lot of her free time volunteering at the Island Health and Rehabilitation Center, and she became a friend and family to many residents there.
She enjoyed gardening, singing, working on crossword puzzles and seeing her many friends.
She is survived by her two sons, James William “Bill’’ Minster of Seattle and Larry Alfred Minster, of Hansville; three grandchildren – Brent Minster and wife Jan of Lynnwood, Blake Minster and wife Tina of Vancouver, Wa. and Heather Minster and husband Tom Oreiro of Poulsbo, Washington; and great-grandsons Craig, Frazer and Brandon.
She was buried in a private service at Port Blakely cemetery next to her mother and father.
Remembrances may be made to the Port Blakely cemetery.

Parker, Jay M. Saturday, 24 Aug 2002
Bainbridge resident Jay M. Parker, age 76 died Aug. 24 at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle.
He was born July 3, 1926 in Roseville, Calif.
During World War II, he served in the Asia-Pacific Theater with the U.S. Navy.
He went on to a 32-year career with Aerojet General Corporation, during which he worked on the Apollo Space Program.
He retired from Aerojet in 1988 as Senior Aerospace Engineer.
He was an award-winning photographer and a volunteer videographer for the Bainbridge Island City Council and public access television. He was a volunteer at the Bainbridge Island Senior Community Center, and was an honorary member of the Sons of Norway in Poulsbo.
On May 10, 1947 he married Nila C. Parker in Tujunga, Calif., . They were married 50 years before her death.
He is survived by a daughter, Vicki Ann Parker of Huizen, The Netherlands; sons Randy Jay Parker of Suquamish and Jayme Scot Parker of Loveland, Calif.; sister Valla Riggins of Hampton, Va.; two grandchildren; five step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
At his request, a private family service was held Aug. 31.
Remembrances can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or a medical research field of the donor’s choice.

Neuer, John J. Thursday, 19 Jun 2003
Bainbridge resident Col. John J. Neuer, USAF retired, age 81, died June 19 at Harrison Hospital.
He was born Oct. 15, 1921 in Wilmington, N.C. to John J. Neuer and Emma Hazel (King) Neuer.
After graduating from New Hanover High School in Wilmington in 1938, he attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., graduating in 1942. In 1953, he completed his master’s degree in nuclear physics from Ohio State University.
He entered the U.S. Air Force in June 1943, retiring in 1969 as a colonel. He was awarded the Legion of Merit in 1969, and a Distinguished Service Medal in 1970.
In 1969 he joined Lockheed Missiles and Space, Inc., where he worked for 19 years before his retirement in 1988.
On April 7, 2003, he married Mary (Maas) Kowalczyk on Bainbridge.
He was a member of the American Legion – Colin Hyde Post 172, the U.S. Military Academy Association of Graduates and the Association of USAF Retired Officers, and attended St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. A fan of model trains, he was a member of the Kitsap Western Division of Bremerton Northern Model RR Club.
He is survived by his wife Mary Kowalczyk-Neuer of Bainbridge; son John J. Neuer, Jr., of San Jose, Calif., and daughters Leann T. Holland of Bainbridge and Patricia A. Best of Naples, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Jean E. (Norton) Neuer.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. June 28 at St. Barnabas. Memorial donations may be made to St. Barnabas Memorial Fund, the Salvation Army, Helpline House, or any veterans organization. Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home.

Quitslund, Leona Agnes Ederer Saturday, 14 Jun 2003
Bainbridge resident Leona Agnes Ederer Quitslund, age 95, died June 14 in Seattle.
She was born April 4, 1908 in Woodland to Ludwig Ederer and Katherine Kohler. She graduated from Sacred Heart School in Portland, Ore., and attended Girls’ Polytechnic, studying millenary.
She enjoyed travel to the end of her life; before marrying, she would save money for boat trips to San Francisco.
She married Phelps Garney Quitslund in July 1932. They raised four children, in Portland, Ore., Seattle, Panther Lake and North Bend. In 1965 they retired to Bainbridge, where her husband had been born and raised.
She enjoyed sewing, knitting, gardening and cooking.
After her husband died in 1985, she moved to Eugene, Ore., where she lived from 1986 to 2002, before returning to the island last June.
During those years, she traveled to Mexico, Hawaii, the Bahamas, and frequently to the East Coast. Her last trip was to Washington, D.C. in April, at age 95.
She is survived by her children Garnie, Sonya, Tanya (Mason) and Ingrid; five grandchildren: Eric and Josef Quitslund, Teresa Bailey, Tammie Jordahl and Derek Mason; and eight great-grandsons – Aaron and Timothy Quitslund, Dominic and Malachi Mason, Tyler Bailey, Cameron and Joshua Jordahl and River Quitslund.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. June 28 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Marge Williams Office Center, or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Myers, Kenneth G. Friday, 13 Jun 2003
Former Bainbridge Island resident Kenneth G. Myers, age 94, of Seattle, died June 13.
He was born June 24, 1908 in Seattle to Alexander Myers and Mary (Brown) Myers.
He graduated from Garfield High School and the University of Washington, and received an honorary doctorate from Whitworth College.
Bainbridge Island became special to him when he spent the first of a lifetime of summers here at his family’s cabin on Yeomalt.
He later began a romance on the Mosquito Fleet ferries with Winslow High graduate Luella Nelson, whom he married .
In 1930, they hired Paul Hardy to build their Yeomalt home (without plumbing) for $1, 325.
They moved to Seattle in 1938, keeping the Yeomalt property as their summer home until Ken and a partner purchased the abandoned YWCA camp on Yeomalt Point in 1952 and subdivided it (waterfront lots then sold for $60 per front foot).
He kept the lot on the point for a new home. It was from this spot that he and a friend saved an Air Force pilot from drowning when his plane crashed into Puget Sound.
During a career in the insurance industry, he was the recipient of the state’s second CPCU designation and served as president of the King County Insurance Association.
While active in business on the island, he served as president of the Bainbridge Island Chamber of Commerce and worked on such community activities as the Strawberry Festival and lighting the high school football field.
He was a charter member of Bainbridge Island Rotary, was involved in the development of Meadowmeer, and was treasurer of the Meadowmeer Golf Club, where he played well into his eighties.
During the spring of 1942, when Japanese Americans were ordered into wartime internment, Myers supported Review editor Walt Woodward in standing up for the rights of his fellow community members and friends.
He was among the islanders who stood at the Eagledale dock as Japanese Americans boarded the ferry Keholoken. He helped look after their property while they were gone and assisted them upon their return, securing insurance for the first returning internee.
Service to his community also included chairing the Seattle City Transit Commission, serving 32 years on the Kenney Home board, chairing the Whitworth College board of Trustees, YMCA leadership activities, and serving as president of the Seabeck Christian Conference Ground for 25 years.
He was treasurer of Dwight Eisenhower’s 1953 and Richard Nixon’s 1968 Washington primary campaigns, Gordon Clinton’s campaigns for mayor of Seattle, and the 1976 Billy Graham Seattle Kingdome Crusade.
His strong faith in Christ was lived out in business and family relationships, and in serving in Christian Endeavor and Presbyterian leadership roles including elder at the Rolling Bay, University and First Presbyterian churches.
At Bayview Manor, where he lived his last 20 years, he served as president of the residents council and the Bayview Manor Foundation.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Luella. He is survived by his children, Nancy, Dick, David and Jim, and nine grandchildren, Julie, Rick, Jenny, Kim, Kathy, Kenny, Andy, Peter and Laura.
A celebration of life was held June 26 at Bayview Manor in Seattle. Memorials can be made to the “Let It Not Happen Again” Memorial Fund, c/o 1298 Grow Avenue, Bainbridge 98110.
