Hartstone, Marcia R. Wednesday, 29 Sep 2004
Marcia R. Hartstone, age 82, died unexpectedly Sept. 29 at her home on Bainbridge Island.
She was born Jan. 12, 1922, in Boston, Mass., to Joseph and Gertrude (Burnce) Rosen.
Following graduation from secretarial school, she married
Leon C. Hartstone, also of Boston (Harvard Class of 1941) and worked at Hingham Shipyard while Lee served in India during World War II. After the war, they settled in Brookline, Mass.
In 1950 they moved with their three children to Valley Stream, N.Y., where they lived until 1964. During this period, Marcia was active in her family’s life and worked as a secretary at ABC-TV.
In 1964, the family moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where she worked for her husband in the record business.
In 1970, they moved to Los Angeles to start a new business venture, Integrity Entertainment, and continued working together until Lee’s death in 1982.
She then spent many years as a volunteer at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, while also pursuing her lifelong interest in world travel and needlecrafts.
In 2001, she moved to Bainbridge Island to spend her final years with her daughters.
She is survived by daughters Jane E. Stone and Judith Hartstone of Bainbridge Island, son Roger Hartstone of Flagstaff, Ariz., and grandchildren Joseph and Laura.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Enid Ruth Jackson of La Jolla, Calif.
There will be a memorial service at 7 p.m. Oct. 7 at Congregation Kol Shalom, 251 Winslow Way West.

Miller, Robert E. Sunday, 19 Sep 2004
Robert E. Miller, 79, of Bainbridge Island, died Sept. 19 at his home.
He was born Aug. 6, 1925, in Seattle, to Edwin and Cleora (Mowbray) Miller.
He graduated from Overlake High School in Bellevue in 1943 and enlisted in the Marine Corps at age 17. He attended Marine Corps Command and Staff College in Quantico, Va., graduating in 1965. He served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam as a fighter pilot, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and nine Air Medals. He retired with the rank of lieutenant colonel. The jets he flew included the F9F, A4 and F4.
After retiring in 1975, he enjoyed living on Bainbridge Island, including morning coffee with his friends at Town and Country Market.
He is survived by his sons Gary (Marian) Miller and Glenn Miller of Oakdale, Calif., and daughter Gail Miller of Tracy, Calif.; sister Marjorie Powell of Cypress, Calif.; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held next spring.
Steward, Joyce Elinor Sunday, 03 Oct 2004
Joyce Elinor Stribling Steward, 87, died Oct. 3 at Kittitas Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center, Ellensburg.
She was born Jan. 16, 1917, in Paton, Iowa, to Oscar Burdell and Hattie May (Jones) Stribling. She attended Paton public schools; Stephens College in Columbia, Mo.; Iowa Univesity; and Grinnell College in Iowa, from which she graduated in 1938. She earned a master’s degree from Drake University in 1951.
She taught English at West High School, Madison, Wis., from 1951-64, and spent the 1961-62 academic year at Yale on a John Hay Fellowship.
From 1964-66, she served as chair of the English department at Lafollette High School in Madison.
In 1966, she joined the Univerisity of Wisconsin-Madison English department, where she taught composition and an innovative Women in Literature course, and also managed the writing laboratory. She authored numerous English textbooks and was active in several professional organizations, notably the National Council of Teachers of English.
She retired from the University of Wisconsin in 1982 and moved to Port Madison on Bainbridge Island, where she continued to write, co-authoring a book for elder writers and lecturing through a program of the Washington Commission for the Humanities.
In 1999, she moved to Ellensburg to be closer to family. In her 80s, she published a book of poetry and taught classes for senior citizens.
She is survived by son Chuck (Peggy) Steward, grandson Derek (Kerry) Steward, great-granddaughter McKenzie Steward and great-grandson Cabot Steward, all of Seattle; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
A private family service is planned, with burial on Bainbridge Island. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Bainbridge Island Library.
Arrangements are by Steward and Williams Tribute Center, Ellensburg.
Glass, Marian Martin Saturday, 25 Sep 2004
Former Bainbridge Island resident Marian Martin Glass, 88, died Sept. 25 at Spokane Hospital.
She was born May 7, 1916, in Culdesac, Idaho, the youngest of 14 children. She attended school in Lapwai, where she played basketball and studied cosmetology.
She met her husband, electrician Larry Glass, when he brought electricity to Lewiston, Idaho, as part of the Rural Electrification Administration in the late 1930s.
During World War II, the couple worked on the construction of the Hanford Nuclear Reservation.
Through the years she lived in Bellevue and Spokane and on Bainbridge Island, first on Ericksen Avenue and later in the Winslow Arms Apartments.
In the mid-1960s, she owned the Village Beauty Shop on High School Road.
She enjoyed driving and took several journeys visiting many states. During her last few years on the island, she could often be seen riding her motorized scooter to the grocery store or out for a meal with loved ones. She was an excellent gardener and floral arranger, and enjoyed Scrabble and bingo.
She is survived by her son Donald, and three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were Oct. 2 at Thornhill Valley Chapel, with burial at Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Bellevue. Memorial donations can be given to the Arthritis Foundation.
Stotts, James Joseph Thursday, 07 Oct 2004
Longtime Bainbridge Island resident James Joseph Stotts, age 75, died Oct. 7 at the family home on Bainbridge Island after a long battle with cancer.
He was born to Howard and Estelle Stotts on Nov. 29, 1928 in Detroit, Mich.
After graduation from Bainbridge Island High School in 1946, he served in the Coast Guard for three years.
His primary career was with Washington State Ferries from which he retired in 1989.
In 1953 he married
his sweetheart, June Woodley, at Holy Family Church in Seattle. Their two children were born on Bainbridge Island.
Survivors include his wife, June, to whom he was married
for 51 years; son Paul Stotts, Bainbridge Island; daughter, Frances (Amadeo) Rossi, Issaquah and their three children, Anthony, Matthew and Brian.
A rosary will be said at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 11, with funeral services to follow at 11 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church. Remembrances may be made to Hospice of Kitsap County, P.O. Box 3416, Silverdale, WA 98383-3416.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home.
Lovgreen, Kate Else Thursday, 23 Dec 2004
Former Bainbridge Island resident Kate Else Lovgreen, 79, died Dec. 23, of natural causes at her home. She was born July 9, 1925 in Schneidemuhl, Germany and immigrated with three members of her family in 1957.
She met and married
Leo Lovgreen in 1958 on Bainbridge Island. In 1961 they moved to Sheltonand bought a dairy farm, which they operated until their retirement in 1986, at that time moving to Olympia.
Leo preceded her in death in 1995.
Kate was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Tumwater and was involved in the Piece Corps quilting group there.
She was also involved in exercising and yoga classes at the YMCA, senior center activities and volunteering at the Thurston County Food Bank.
She was a prior member at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Shelton for over 30 years and was active in the Lydia Ruth Circle there.
She was also a past member of the local Parkinson’s support group.
She enjoyed animals, gardening, nature and arranging flowers. She was known for her generosity and willingness to help others.
She is survived by a daughter, Heidi Lyons and son-in-law, Steve of Tumwater, and four nephews and a niece.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Jan. 5 at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, 206 E. Wyandotte Ave. in Shelton.

Elias, Nigel B. Thursday, 18 Nov 2004
Former Bainbridge Island resident Nigel B. Elias, 27, died Nov. 18 at his home in Eureka, Ill.
He was born Dec. 29, 1976, in Streator, Ill., to William and Mary Muscato Elias.
He attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He was a sous chef in the Seattle and Bainbridge area for the last five years.
He enjoyed the outdoors, especially canoeing, kayaking and camping.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Mary and Mike Biros; his father William Elias; and two half-brothers and one half-sister.
A celebration of Nigel’s life was held Nov. 22 at Argo-Ruestman-Harris Funeral Home in Eureka Ill. The Rev. Richard P. Richards officiated.
Beaulieu, Mary Beth Sunday, 19 Dec 2004
Kingston resident Mary Beth Beaulieu died Dec. 19. She was 71.
She was born to Tom and Vivian Hoban in Seattle on Dec. 11, 1933. She graduated from Blessed Sacrament Grade School and then from Roosevelt High School in 1950.
She worked as a dental assistant and attended Seattle University. In the summer of 1951, she won the title of Miss University District in the Seafair celebration. She was selected as the First Lady in Waiting to the Queen and represented Seattle in parades and community events around the Northwest when the Queen could not. In 1952, she was selected as Miss Liberty by the American Legion. She also appeared in the Ice Follies.
She married
Robert Charles Beaulieu on June 25, 1955.
Beaulieu earned a real estate license, and worked for Windermere Real Estate for 22 years, both in Seattle and Poulsbo, and then joined John L. Scott in Kingston in 2001.
She and her husband had a summer home in Mission Beach where they enjoyed boating, fishing and other special activities with their family. In 1989, the couple moved to Kingston where Beaulieu often participated in the Kingston Fourth of July Parade as the Tooth Fairy.
She is survived by her husband Chuck of Kingston; sons Charlie of Indianola, Christopher (Patti) of Los Altos, Calif., Joseph (Penny) of Kingston and Edward (Sharon) of Edmonds; daughter Deb Boardman (Al) of Kingston; brother Tom Hoban of Marysville; sister Margaret Moore of Kingston; 10 grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Dec. 29 at St. Peter’s Mission in Suquamish with a reception following at the Kiana Lodge in Suquamish. Arrangements are under the care of the Stone Chapel in Poulsbo.

Groundwater, James R. Saturday, 25 Dec 2004
James R. Groundwater, age 87, died Dec. 25 at Island Health and Rehabilitation on Bainbridge Island.
He was born Feb. 1, 1917, in Chicago, Ill., to James C. and Hattie L. (Fritsche) Groundwater.
Following graduation from a Chicago high school in 1936, he attended the University of Chicago.
He then entered the military service in World War II in the U.S. Army, and served in Japan and Germany.
Following his military service he became a postal clerk. He retired from the U.S. Post Office in 1972 after 26 years of service.
For the next 10 years he was a guest columnist for the Chesterton (Indiana) Tribune. In 1982 he moved to Sun City, Ariz., where he lived until 2001, when he moved to Bainbridge Island and then Poulsbo.
During his younger years, he played semi-pro football and starred on both sides of the ball. He was a linebacker and running back.
“I loved to tackle, ” his stepson Don recalled him saying.
He was an accomplished writer, poet, innovator and active environmentalist.
He is survived by his step-children, Don and his wife Kerry Sickle, Seattle; Eileen and Doug Hatfield, Bainbridge Island; Susanne and her son Daniel Weider, Byfield, Mass.; niece Jean (James Vesely) and their daughters, Debbie Twelker, Kirkland, and Rebecca Vesely, San Francisco.
Funeral services were held Dec. 28 at Kass Funeral Home with burial at Hillcrest cemetery, Bainbridge Island.
