Ditmore, Conrad William Friday, 04 Oct 2002
Conrad William Ditmore, age 87, died Oct. 4 at Messenger House Care Center.
He was born July 13, 1915 in Kenmare, N.D., to Wilmot and Effie (Stansbury) Ditmore.
He graduated from Howard Lake High School in Minnesota.
He had a wonderful singing voice and sang in the Minneapolis Men’s Choir.
In 1942, he married
June Van Nest and entered military service, serving in the Coast Guard in World War II.
In 1951, the family moved to Seattle. He was a marine diesel-engine sales manager for Hatch and Kirk in Ballard, traveling the Northwest from Oregon to Alaska.
Upon retirement he continued to pursue his leisure activities of golf, fishing and reading. He moved to Bainbridge in 1999.
He is survived by his wife, Rhoda, of Bainbridge; three sons: Michael of Santa Barbara, Calif.; Daniel Roy of Washington and Brian of Bainbridge; one daughter, Sue Bunn of Bainbridge; a brother, John, of Sauk Center, Minn., a sister Margaret Barth, Howard Lake, Minn.; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be announced at the future date. Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home, Bainbridge Island.
Sorensen, Barbara Friday, 04 Oct 2002
Longtime Bainbridge resident Barbara Sorensen, age 59, died Oct. 4.
A celebration of her life will be held 2-4 p.m. Oct. 13 at the home of Tom and Luanne Croker, 10458 Arrow Point Dr.
Because of limited parking, car pooling from Battle Point Park’s east entrance parking lot is recommended.

MacNamara, David Donald Wednesday, 02 Oct 2002
Bainbridge Island resident, David Donald MacNamara, age 59, died Oct. 2 from injuries suffered in an automobile crash on Bainbridge.
He was born April 15, 1943 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the son of Donald and Estelle (Fyfe) MacNamara.
His elementary and high school years were spent at Upper Canada College in Toronto.
His college career was interrupted by service in Vietnam, where he earned a Purple Heart for wounds suffered in battle.
He returned to school and graduated from Lake Forest College, Ill., with a degree in art history.
Following 12 years as operations manager with Clarke Transport in Canada, David owned and operated the Market Kitchen Store in Vancouver, BC.
He and his wife Jeanne moved to Bainbridge Island in 1990.
He was active in the island community and his local homeowner’s association. He was a regular at the Thriftway grocery store, where everybody knew him and assisted him with developing his passion as a chef. He participated whenever cooking classes were offered at Pleasant Beach Bistro.
He is survived by Jeanne Soulier, his wife of 22 years, and a brother, John MacNamara of Toronto.
A gathering of family and friends was held Oct. 8. Interment will take place at a future date at Arlington National cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Helpline House, 282 Knechtel.

Spearman, Nevada Letitia Jane Thursday, 26 Sep 2002
Nevada Letitia Jane (Roberts) Spearman, age 105, died Sept. 26 at Messenger House Care Center.
She was born Feb. 8, 1897 in Terre Haute, Ind. to John W. and Julia A. (Bannister) Roberts. In 1925, she married
Theodore F. Spearman in Ellensburg.
She was a longtime resident of Yakima, where she resided in her own home until moving to Messenger House in 1998.
She received a life-time award from the NAACP, of which she was a member. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star at Guiding Star Lodge 6 of the Prince Hall Free and Accepted Masons, the Big Sisters Club and Mount Hope Baptist Church, all in Yakima.
She is survived by her son, Theodore (Marie) Spearman of Bainbridge; granddaughter Simone L. Spearman and great-granddaughter Saja Spearman Weaver of California; and nephew Thomas Tecumseh of Bremerton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore F. Spearman, in 1984.
Services were held Oct. 5 at Shaw and Sons, with interment at Tahoma cemetery in Yakima. Remembrances can be made to Mount Hope Baptist Church, 615 S. Third St., Yakima, WA 98901, to the NAACP or a charity of the donor’s choice.
Green, Robert Ware Saturday, 05 Apr 2003
Island resident Robert Ware Green, born July 12, 1923, died April 5 in Mukilteo. He was 79.
He led a career as a bus driver for the Seattle transit system.
On Bainbridge, where he lived for many years, he was a recognizable figure about town, known for wearing a baseball cap with a large crow beak on the front.
He is survived by two daughters, Nancy Stallings of Mill Creek and Valerie Green of St. Paul, Minn.; three sons, William Green and Peter Green, both of Whidbey Island, and Gary Green of Issaquah; and four grandchildren.
He is also survived by two brothers, Galen Green of Manomet and Winslow Green of Lexington, Mass.; five sisters – Dorothy Darling of Milwaukee, Wis., Helen Fawler of Dubury, Mass., Phyllis Baker and Ariel Tose, both of Hingham, Mass., and Cynthia Platt of Denville, N.J. – and a large extended family.
Services will be held 2 p.m. April 12 at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. Burial will be at Auburn cemetery in Boston, Mass.
Remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Thomas, Ralph Wayne Friday, 04 Apr 2003
Ralph Wayne Thomas, age 55, died April 4 at his home on Bainbridge Island.
He was born Sept. 13, 1947 in Seattle to Raymond and Jenny (Lind) Thomas.
He graduated from Rainier Beach High School and later attended Highline Junior College. He served in Vietnam, where he was a cryptography expert. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds he suffered during battle.
Following his tour of duty, he served at FortLewis as a drill instructor. He worked various jobs after his military service.
He was an avid rock collector and enjoyed travel. He recently completed a Caribbean cruise with his mother.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. April 9 at Evergreen-Washelli in Seattle.
His mother, Jenny Thomas of Bainbridge Island, and one brother, Dick, of Bothell, survive him.

Jacoby, Robert Ralph Friday, 04 Apr 2003
Port Blakely pioneer Robert Ralph “Jake” Jacoby, age 91, died April 4 on Bainbridge Island.
He was born Jan. 17, 1912, in Seattle to Ralph and Grace Jacoby, and grew up in DesMoines.
In the 1940s, he built his own dock by hand on the north shore of Blakely Harbor, using block, tackle and minus tides; the dock still stands today.
He worked on the Port Blakely water system and helped build the Masonic Lodge. He was a Mason for 50 years and a Shriner, and attended Christ Memorial Church in Poulsbo.
He married
Ethel Boyts in 1942, and they were married
for 59 years until her death in November 2001.
As a young man, he went to Alaska many times by boat. He owned many boats over the years, but never fished. He enjoyed clam digging and taking friends for excursions. He and his family slept under the stars on camping trips, and he took children and grandchildren on excursions to Alaskan waters in 1979 and 1985.
He commuted from Point White to Bremerton on the passenger boat Carlisle for many years. retired from Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in 1977.
He is survived by children Fred (Joanne) Jacoby of Bellevue, Don Jacoby of Bainbridge Island, and Linda (Jim) Click of Tacoma; grandsons John A. (Robin) Cummins, Jr., of Sumner, David A. (Kelly) Cummins of Tacoma, Stephen A. Cummins of Tacoma; and great-grandchildren Nick, Savannah, Sabrina, Shyanne and Mason.
A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. April 26 at the Masonic Lodge on Bainbridge Island.
Munjone, Patricia Ann Monday, 24 Mar 2003
Bainbridge Island resident Patricia Ann Munjone, age 61, died March 24 at her home.
She was born Dec. 14, 1941 in Allentown, Pa., to Ernest and Sarah (Petruska) Munjone.
Following graduation from Allentown High School in 1959, she joined the Army.
She left military service for work with the Los Angeles County treasurer as a retirement specialist from 1961-1977. Following that, she moved to Washington and worked for the United States Government Department of Education until 1982 and later for the Department of Defense as a Contracting Specialist.
From 1995 until the time of her death, she was a financial analyst for Primerica Financial Services.
She enjoyed people, children, family, and had a passion for the healing arts. She was an avid learner and held a doctorate in metaphysics.
She is survived by her friend of 26 years, Sharon Alston, Bainbridge Island; one son, Deon Munjone, Suquamish; one god-son, Jamil Alston, Seattle; one brother, Ernest Munjone, Jr., Central Valley, Pa., and sister Diane Gollinger, Allentown, Pa.
Graveside services were held March 27 at Tahoma National cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. April 2 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church.

Duchaine, Mary Elizabeth “Mary Beth” C. Sunday, 23 Mar 2003
Bainbridge resident Mary Elizabeth “Mary Beth” C. Duchaine, age 62, died March 23.
She was born April 28, 1940 in Bridgeton N.J.
She and her husband Richard settled on Bainbridge Island in 1991 after having lived in Florida, Connecticut, New York, and Germany.
Nursing was her profession, and after 40 years she retired as the executive director of Hospice of Kitsap County.
She joined Hospice as their director of nursing, and shortly thereafter was appointed interim executive director. Because of her leadership, the position was made permanent. She left with reluctance when her health would not allow her to continue.
She was proud of helping open a neighborhood health care center in Peekskill, N.Y., which recently celebrated is 26th year of service.
Among her many interests were gardening, sewing, needlecraft and taking in nature while sailing. Her life was filled with music through singing, conducting children’s choirs and attending the symphony.
She was an active member of Washington State Nurses Association, the American Cancer Society, the Washington State Oncology Nursing Society, Washington State Hospice Organization, St. Barnabas Episcopal Church and the Silverdale Rotary, where she served on their long-range planning committee.
She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Richard A. Duchaine; daughter Suzanne Rodgers, her husband Jeff and children Michael, Daniel, Keith and Adam of Kissimmee, Fla.; mother Elizabeth F. Correll of Hobe Sound Fla.; brother W. Ralph Correll of Parsippany, N.J.; and sisters Carolyn Correll and Judy Schleicker of Stuart, Fla.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. April 1 at Saint Cecilia Catholic Church, Bainbridge Island.
