Rowland-Davies, Mary

Mary-Rowland Davies of Silverdale died Dec. 17 at Naval Hospital in Bremerton. She was 66 years old.
She was born May 4, 1935 in Manila, the Philippines, to Edward and Mary-Rowland (Carter) Bomar.
She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington, D.C., in 1952 and attended Mary Washington College in Virginia for two years. She married Peter Gale Davies on May 2, 1981 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
She was a homemaker and former owner of The Sign Man before selling it in 1996.
She was president and past treasurer of the Bremerton Symphony League and chaplain for Chapter C.G.P.E.O. Sisterhood.
She is survived by two daughters, Lolana Grace Fontaign of Boise, Idaho, and Rebecca Lynn Paige of Vancouver; a son, Sam Paige of Salem, Ore.; and a brother, Edward Bomar III of Bainbridge Island; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents. Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 5, at Summit Avenue Presbyterian Church, 403 Summit Ave. in Bremerton.
Memorial donations may be made to the Mary-Rowland Davies Musical Scholarship for Olympic College, care of the Bremerton Symphony League, P.O. Box 996, Bremerton, 98337.

Hodes, Maxine

Bainbridge Island resident Maxine M. Hodes, 87, died at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle Dec. 15.
She was born Feb. 2, 1914, in Myrtle Point, Ore., to Norman W. and Nellie McDonald.
The familiy moved to the Clear Creek area when Maxine was four years old. She attended Clear Creek Elementary School and Central Kitsap High School before graduating from Bremerton High School in 1932. She earned a scholarship to study English at Washington State University, but her matriculation was pre-empted when she received a marriage proposal from Austin Haley. They married in 1933.
Austin Haley was a machinist at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton before being loaned to the Philippine Shipyard. The family lived there for three years.
When the war began, Austin Haley was transferred to Washington, D.C. and Maxine and the couple’s children were stranded in the Philippines. After her mother sent a desperate appeal to freshman Sen. Warren Magnuson, they escaped on the last ship before Japanese occupation.
Austin Haley joined the Army during World War II, and died in an airplane crash in December 1947. Maxine Haley and her boys returned to Bremerton.
She married Lewis Hodes in 1955 and they lived on Mercer Island from 1957-77.
With the exception of two years in Green Valley, Ariz., she lived on Bainbridge Island from 1977 until her death.
Hodes is survived by three sons, Dennis R. Haley of Port Aransas, Texas, Patrick A. Haley of Myrtle Point, Ore., and Marshall Haley of Glendale, Ariz.; two sisters, Mary Ellen Adams of Seattle and Dorothy Whitley of Tacoma; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her oldest son, Brian, at age six, and Lewis Hodes in 1991.
A memorial was conducted Dec. 18 at the Wyatt House, 186 Wyatt Way on Bainbridge Island. Memorial donations may be sent to the Wyatt House.

Calhoun, Samantha

Samantha Rachelle Calhoun of Silverdale died Dec. 9 in Silverdale. She was born the same day to Ben C. Calhoun and Elizabeth R. (Spurlock) Calhoun.
She is survived by her parents, of Silverdale; her grandparents, Ben and Tammy Calhoun and Debbie Andrews and Steve Spurlock. Memorial donations may be made to the Make A Wish Foundation, 107 Cherry Street suite 305, Seattle, 98104.

Somers, Victoria

Victoria Louise Somers of Kingston died Saturday, Dec. 8, at Children’s Hospital in Seattle. She was a 9-year-old fourth grader at the Island School on Bainbridge Island.
Somers was born March 19, 1992, to Alan and Sue Somers.
Her favorite class in school was math, and she also enjoyed writing. She enjoyed the outdoors and was active in the Camp Fire girls. Somers was an avid fan of Harry Potter.
Somers also was an animal lover who enjoyed spending time with her dogs, Muffy and Brandy. She had hoped to be a veterinarian when she grew up.
She is survived by her parents; her grandparents, Robert and Mary Johnson; her aunt and uncle, Jan and Jim Van Fredenberg; and cousins John, Kathy, Jerry and Jeff.
A memorial service is scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, at Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church.

Graham, Jay

Long-time Bremerton resident Jay Graham died Friday, Dec. 7 at his home in West Bremerton. He was 87 years old.
He was born May 22, 1914 to Lloyd and Louise Graham in Spokane.
The family moved to Bremerton in 1916, when Lloyd Graham began working at the Puget Sound Navy Yard. The family moved to Seattle, where Graham attended Queen Anne HIgh School. He graduated from Wenatchee High School in 1932.
Graham married Audrey Way Nov. 6, 1938, in Ellensburg.
The couple moved to Bremerton in 1940, where he worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard during World War II.
In 1950, the family moved to Grandview, where he worked for General Electric. He returned to work at PSNS in 1967, retiring in 1975.
He is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Graham McDade of Bremerton and Madeleine O’Donnell of LaConner...

Shotwell, Jacob

Jacob Richard Shotwell of Charlotte, N.C., died Tuesday, April 6 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. while undergoing a cord-blood stem cell transplant. The former Bremerton resident was only 14 years old and battled life-long illnesses caused by being born immune suppressed.
Jacob was the son of Luz Saunders of Charlotte and Steve Shotwell of Hansville. Born in Bremerton on March 7, 1990, he attended Naval Avenue and Crown Hill elementary schools and underwent treatment at Children’s Hospital in Seattle.
In 1998 he moved to Charlotte and attended Kennedy Middle School while undergoing treatments at Duke and Hemby Children’s Hospital.
He is survived by his parents; sister Kayla; brother Najee; stepmother Melody Shotwell of Hansville; stepfather Tony Langley of Charlotte; grandparents Frank and Ginna Shotwell of Bremerton; aunt Stacie and uncle Chris Schmechel of Mountain View, Calif; and stepbrothers and stepsisters Michelle, Cameron, Jon, Crystal, Kayla and Nicole, all of Hansville.
A celebration of Jacob’s life is planned for May 16 at the Hansville Community Center. Services are Saturday, April 17, in Charlotte. An online memorial is available at www.caringbridge. org/nc/jacob.

Earl Brockett, 92

Earl E. Brockett of Poulsbo, Wash. died Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at Martha & Mary Health Care Center of natural causes. He was 92.
Brockett was born on Sept. 25, 1911 in Hartsville, Tenn. to Oscar and Minnie (Gross) Brockett.
After graduating from Hartsville High School in 1929, he joined the U.S. Navy and rose to the rank of lieutenant commander over a 30-year career where he spent time on aircraft carriers and destroyers before becoming a submariner in 1939.
He also married his wife Alyce (Berger) Brockett in Tijuana, Mexico in 1939.
Upon retiring in 1959 from the Navy, Brockett worked as a real estate broker and had his own business doing appraisals until 1987.
He was a member of the Vinland Lutheran Church in Poulsbo, Retired Officers Association, the Nile Temple in Seattle, the Masons in Hansville, Multiple Listing Service, Appraisal Institute, the Clallam County Board of Equalization and investment clubs in Seattle, Port Angeles and Poulsbo. He also enjoyed learning, hunting, fishing and working on his beefalo ranch in Port Angeles.
He is survived by his wife; sons Terry Brockett of Curtice, Ohio, Bruce Brockett of Eagle River, Alaska, and Ralph Brockett of Port Angeles; grandchildren Ted, Alan, Mitch, Dannah, Jennifer, Glenn, Brent and Loni; three great-grandchildren and his brother, Oscar “OG” Brockett of Austin, Texas.
A memorial service was Monday in Poulsbo, followed by a committal service Tuesday at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent, Wash. Memorial donations can be made to Martha & Mary Health Care Center, 19160 Front St. N.E., Poulsbo, WA 98370. Arrangements under the direction of the Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove Memorial Park in Poulsbo.

Allred, Florence

Florence L. Allred of Silverdale died Sunday, May 30, at Harrison Hospital. She was 80.
Allred was a supervisor in the purchasing department at Naval Supply Center Puget Sound for 17 years before her retirement in 1983. She also worked at Hill Air Force Base in Ogden, Utah.
She was born July 25, 1923, in Salt Lake City to Carl and Ethel (Young) Fornelius. Allred attended Davis High School in Kaysville, Utah, where she graduated in 1941.
In 1945 she married John F. Allred in Salt Lake City. He preceded her in death in 1969.
Allred enjoyed gardening, crafts and studying family history. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Silverdale second ward.
She is survived by her daughters Kathleen (husband Adarin) Gohl of Port Orchard and Jeannette Allred of Silverdale, along with four grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her brothers Carl and LaVoy Fornelius, sister Bea Worsley, and granddaughter Corina Packard.
Services were June 4 at the Silverdale Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Internment is at Haven of Rest Memorial Park in Gig Harbor. Arrangements by Rill Chapel’s Life Tribute Center in Port Orchard.

Culbertson, Bud

Bud J. Culbertson died Sunday, May 23, at the age of 79.
Culbertson owned and operated the Clear Creek Grocery Store for 20 years. Before that he had worked as an engineer for Boeing for 12 years and was also a rural postal carrier for 15 years.
He attended North Kitsap High School and was in the U.S. Army Aircorps during World War II.
He enjoyed fishing, golfing and playing the guitar and singing. He had earned a private pilot llicense and enjoyed all things dealing with planes. He was a member of the Central Kitsap School Board for two terms and spent 15 years as a volunteer driver for Chuck Wagon home delivered meals.
He was married to Betty Orwiler who preceeded him in death in 2003.
He is survived by a son Tom (Toni) Culbertson of Tahuya and daughter Jolene Culbertson (husband Bill Maiers) of Poulsbo, brothers Don (Michelle) Culbertson of Spokane, Dick Culbertson of Selah, Len (Norma) Culbertson of Spokane and sister Evelyn Briggs of Rockville, Maryland and also grandchildren Tommy and Kellie Culbertson and numerous neices and nephews and his golden retriever, Taylor.
There will be a memorial service at Lewis Funeral Chapel at 1 p.m. Thursday, May, 27. Memorial donations may be made to Chuck Wagon Senior Nutrition Program, 2817 Wheaton Way, No. 208, Bremerton, 98310.

Robison, Regan

Regan Roger Robison, a 23-year veteran of the Navy, died Saturday, May 1, 2004, at his home in Silverdale, Wash., at the age of 64.
While in the Navy, Robison reached the rank of Chief Petty Officer with numerous citations. After his retirement in 1982, he worked for 15 years as a security liaison for the Navy Exchange at Naval Station Bremerton.
Robison was born July 17, 1939, in Sparta, Ill., to George and Fay (Higgins) Robison. He married his wife Karen M. (Gunderson) Robison on Jan. 11, 1975.
Among his interests were camping, hunting, fishing, woodworking and collecting stamps and coins from around the world.
He is survived by his wife, Karen Robison, of Silverdale; his sons David and Christopher Robison of Vancouver, Wash.; and his sister, Roxie Fairall of Bremerton.
A memorial service is planned for 4:30 p.m. today, May 5, at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Bremerton. His body will be cremated and scattered at sea in a Navy ceremony. Donations to the U.S. Navy Memorial Fund can be made in the name of MAC Regan R. Robison, U.S. Navy Memorial Foundation, Dept. WETC, 701 Pennsylvania Ave. N.W., Suite 123, Washington, D.C. 20004-2608. Arrangements by Lewis Funeral Chapel.
