Ella May Walton, 81
Ella May Walton died on July 26, 2004, at the Columbia Lutheran Home in Seattle. She was 81 years old.
She was born Feb. 11, 1923, in Seattle.
Ms. Walton was a cook at the Vashon Nursing Home for 10 years until her retirement in 1988. Previously she was a teacher at Adams Grade School in Seattle.
Survivors include son Calvin Rooks, Jr. and his wife Lena of Seattle, son David Walton, formerly of Vashon, daughter Linda Walton Laur of Vashon and sister Rosalie Ostendorf of Ismay, Montana.
Her parents George and Edith Stoerchli and brother George Stoerchli Jr. died previously.
Services are 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7, at Bethany Lutheran Church, 7400 Woodlawn Ave. N.E., Seattle.
JOAN MACDONALD KEIL
July 14, 1929 - July 18, 2004
Joan Macdonald Keil was born on July 14, 1929 in Port Townsend, Washington and passed away July 18, 2004 at the age of 75, in Bellevue, WA at the Gardens at Town Square.
Joan graduated from Garfield High School and worked at Littlers in Seattle.
Joan married
Girard (Jerry) Keil on Jan. 21, 1949 in Seattle. Joan was the daughter of Betty MacDonald, who wrote The Egg and I, Onions in the Stew and the Miss Piggle Wiggle stories.
Joan and Jerry lived in Enatai and Medina with their four children, Heidi, Rebecca, Timothy, and Toby. Joan sang in variety shows to help raise money for Overlake Hospital.
Joan was very creative; she loved to paint, garden, cook and create drive flower arrangements. Joan’s sense of humor always made people laugh.
Joan is survived by her daughter, Heidi Keil Richards and husband Kim Richards, and their daughters, Heather and Devin; son, Tim Keil and his wife Mary Jo, and their daughters Kallyn, Jerrica, Angie, and son Michael; and her son, Toby Keil and his wife Sally, and children Rachel and Griffin.
Memorial services will be Saturday, July 31 at 11 a.m. at First Congregational Church in Bellevue.
Betty Josie Gordon
Oct. 27, 1919 - June 17, 2004
Betty Josie Gordon formally of Vashon Island, passed away peacefully with her family by her side at the age of 84 on June 17, 2004 in Kailua-Kona, HI.
She had spent the last eight years in paradise. She was active in the Kona Outdoor Circle with gardening classes and bridge. Born in Seattle, WA to Clarence and Clara Bryant. Married Frank L. Gordon in Jan of 1943. Frank was off to war and Betty took part in the war effort by working in a lumber mill & being a riveter. Together they raised their two sons & daughter with vacations and weekends going over to the family summer home on Vashon. Betty made sure they retired on Vashon. Together they turned the beach home into a wonderful year round home. They shared many beach parties with oysters and shrimp from the ocean and many local steamer clams. She was known for her fabulous cooking. Betty enjoyed bridge at the VICC. She was an avid gardener & took pride in growing her flowers from seed. She is survived by her son Don Gordon of San Clemente, CA, son Alex (Karen) Gordon of White Sulphur Springs MT, daughter Celia (Rick) Walters of Burton, WA. Five grandchildren and one great grand child.
A memorial was held at the Outdoor Circle in Kona, HI. The family will hold a private ceremony with the scattering of her ashes in Quartermaster Harbor.
Brenno, Adele Tuesday, 27 Jul 2004
Adele Brenno of Vashon died July 16, 2004, on Vashon Island. She was 90 years old.
She was born in Cle Elum on May 5, 1914. She had lived the last two decades on Vashon.
Her husband, Harold Brenno, died earlier, as did her two sons.
Survivors include her stepchildren Bob and Diane Brenno, Betty and Bobby Lewis, George and Barbara Brenno and Barbara and Ken Cooper all of Vashon.
There will be no service at her request.
Remembrances can be made to the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Association.
Bowdish, Harley Waine Saturday, 08 May 2004
Harley Waine Bowdish, 83
Harley Waine Bowdish died May 8, 2004, in Sequim, Wash. He was 83 years old.
Mr. Bowdish was born June 13, 1920, in California.
He served in World War II in the South Pacific and returned home to operate service stations in Seattle before beginning his career with the Boeing Company. The highlight of his career at Boeing was piloting and training pilots on the Boeing Hydrofoil in Puget Sound, Asia and Europe.
He enjoyed long hours on the golf course, week-long elk hunting trips, fly fishing and boating with family and friends.
He lived 15 years on Vashon.
Friends and family say they remember him as a hard-working, kind, quiet, funny, loving husband and father who will be missed by everyone whose lives he touched.
Survivors include his wife Ellie, daughters Sandra Kreis and her husband Roger of Shelton, Barbara Knight of Poulsbo, and son Mike and his wife Lori of Redmond, grandchildren Jacob Kreis, Joanna Jacobson, Mary and Danielle Bowdish, great grandchildren Tyler, Corey, Cameron and Spencer Kreis, sister Rayma Burger and numerous nieces and nephews.
His wives Mary and Virginia and brothers Darrel and Mel died earlier.
Eagleson, Glen A Wednesday, 21 Jul 2004
Glen A. Eagleson died Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at his home in Renton. He was 75 years old.
Mr. Eagleson was born July 29, 1928 in Union, N.D. He married
in Milton, N.D., in October 1952. He retired from Boeing in 1987.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Joyce Juanita Eagleson, sons Larry Eagleson of Vashon, David Eagleson of Kent, Randy Eagleson of Renton, daughter Shelly Jo of Kent, sisters Gladys of Crockston, Minn., Alyce of Edinburg, N.D., Donna and Joyce, both of Woodburn, Ore., and three grandchildren.
Services were at Cross and Crown Lutheran Church. Burial was at Tahoma National cemetery.
Adami, Hans Tuesday, 29 Jun 2004
Hans A. Adami, age 79, passed away at his home on Vashon Island on June 29th, 2004. His death followed a brief illness, which permitted close family members the opportunity to gather together to share stories and say goodbyes.
Hans was born January 12, 1925 in Vallendar, Germany, near Koblenz.
Following service in the Luftwaffe as an aircraft engine mechanic, he completed engineering training and immigrated to North America. He met and married
his wife Peggie in Vancouver BC; they were married
for 45 years, spending 43 of them on Vashon. Hans earned his Professional Engineer license in 1971, and his career as a mechanical engineer included jobs at Boeing, Rocket Research, and The Robbins Company.
Hans will be recalled fondly in many ways. Outwardly gruff to some and fiercely loyal to others, his idealism, patriotism, and charisma made him consistently memorable to those who met him, even if that meeting was brief.
He had special fondness for people who, like himself, devoted their personal energy to overcoming obstacles and creating achievements through hard work and sacrifice. More than one Island youth found inspiration in his stories and personality.
In addition to his wife Peggie, he leaves sons John (Bellevue) and Brian (Richland), and daughter Heidi (O’Malley, Selah) and their families. No memorial services are planned.
Fox, Edna Velma Friday, 16 Jul 2004
Edna Velma Fox passed away July 2, 2004 on Vashon Island, Washington. She was born July 16, 1907 in Red Lodge, Montana to Mary Agnes and Arthur Thompson. She married
Harold Macy Fox in 1928.
Edna is survived by her children: Bruce Fox (Marilyn), Sandra Whitney, Sharron Powell (Vern), 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; a sister, Hazel Schmeil of Bellingham, Washington and many nieces and nephews.
Mom will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor, her skill and expression in reciting poetry, and her love of travel in her later years.
She was a nurse in her early years, and then worked at Mt. Rainier ordinance Depot and Camp Murray until retiring and moving to Bellingham.
We’ll miss you, Mom.

Graveside services were July 8, 2004 at Haven of Rest cemetery in Gig Harbor, Washington.
Bagley, Mary Helen Hart Monday, 28 Jun 2004
Mary Helen Hart Bagley, at 87 years of age, passed away on June 28, 2004.
Born in Olympia, Washington on July 4, 1916, her family moved to Seattle when she was five. She was the daughter of Harry A. and Helen Parker Hart.
Her paternal grandfather, Emmett N. Parker, was a Chief Justice of the Washington State Supreme Court.
Mary graduated from Roosevelt High School and the University of Washington where she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. In 1937 she married
Park Daniel Bagley, a member of a Seattle area pioneer family, who passed away in 1985.
Mary described the most eventful moment of her life as being when her parents rented a cottage on Vashon Island in 1928 where they spent the summers. At the end of the war, Mary and Park bought the cottage and eventually built a new, permanent home. Today that home is part of a four building complex which is enjoyed as a gathering point by her family, particularly on holidays and special occasions.
Having never run a business before, Mary successfully started and ran the Gulls Nest and Sandpiper retail stores on Vashon.
Mary and Park were renowned square and round dancing instructors in the 60’s and 70’s.
At age 80, Mary took residence in The Garden Club Retirement Home in Bellevue where she cherished every day with her many friends and her special friend, Bob Burgess.
Mary is survived by her daughter Sarah Bagley Mathews (Jerry), son John H. Bagley (Diane), brother Robert Hart, grandchildren Daniel, Michael, Jennifer, Tom and Tim, and great grandchildren Olivia, John, Michael, Chrissie, Charley, Katherine, Lucas, Marcus and Jack.
For many years Mary was the family matriarch who took great pleasure in every family event and tradition leaving this as her legacy.

Tennant, Forrest Wednesday, 21 Jun 2006
Forrest Tennant died June 21, 2006, in West Seattle. He was 92 years old.
Survivors include a daughter, Cherry Morgan, of Vashon. Services will be in Spokane with interment in Wilbaux, Mont.
Services were entrusted to Island Funeral Service.
Hess, William "Bill" Norman Thursday, 08 Jun 2006
William Norman “Bill” Hess, died June 8, 2006. He was 83 years old.
Mr. Hess was born May 23, 1923, in St. Louis, Mo. He was the first child of William Norman Julius and Beulah Pearl Simpson Hess.
He spent his formative years in St. Louis. He attended Webster Groves High School until 1941.
During World War II he served in the 387th Field Artillery Battalion, 104th Infantry Division, seeing action in France, Holland and Germany. He returned to the U.S. in June 1945, married
his high school sweetheart and was discharged from the Army in 1945.
His war experience gave him a focus on life. He completed his high school studies and graduated from technical colleges.
He was employed for 30 years as a television technician with the Radio Corporation of America (RCA). Bill was also a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Number 1, and held the position of shop steward.
Mr. Hess retired from RCA in 1983 and began an active retired life. He moved to the Ozark Mountain town of Shell Knob, Missouri, where he lived and played for 20 years.
In January 2003 he moved to the Vashon Community Care Center, spending his remaining years amusing, and being amused.
Friends and family recall him as a loving husband, wise father, indulgent grandfather and generous friend.
His hobbies and interests centered on youth and water. He held several adult leadership positions in the St. Louis Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America, including Scoutmaster, Explorer Post Adviser, Area Commissioner and Merit Badge Counselor.
He also loved fishing and boating. He was active in the Shell Knob branch of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, holding several leadership positions there.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Betty Jane Fyffe, sister Betty Lee Duffy, son Dennis Hess, daughter-in-law Lori, grandson Brian, granddaughter Robin, many cousins, nieces and nephews, and is fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Du Fresne, Signe Wednesday, 07 Jun 2006
Signe Du Fresne, born Dec. 30, 1957, in Seattle died June 7, 2006. She was a lifelong Islander.
Survivors include her mother Connie Du Fresne and siblings La Fawn, Shawn, Renard, Matthew and Rhoda.
There will be a family and friends gathering at a later date. The family requests any memorials be sent to the Washington Advocates for the Mentally Ill.
