Betty Josie Gordon formally of Vashon Island, passed away peacefully with her family by her side at the age of 84 on June 17, 2004 in Kailua-Kona, HI.
She had spent the last eight years in paradise. She was active in the Kona Outdoor Circle with gardening classes and bridge. Born in Seattle, WA to Clarence and Clara Bryant. Married Frank L. Gordon in Jan of 1943. Frank was off to war and Betty took part in the war effort by working in a lumber mill & being a riveter. Together they raised their two sons & daughter with vacations and weekends going over to the family summer home on Vashon. Betty made sure they retired on Vashon. Together they turned the beach home into a wonderful year round home. They shared many beach parties with oysters and shrimp from the ocean and many local steamer clams. She was known for her fabulous cooking. Betty enjoyed bridge at the VICC. She was an avid gardener & took pride in growing her flowers from seed. She is survived by her son Don Gordon of San Clemente, CA, son Alex (Karen) Gordon of White Sulphur Springs MT, daughter Celia (Rick) Walters of Burton, WA. Five grandchildren and one great grand child.
A memorial was held at the Outdoor Circle in Kona, HI. The family will hold a private ceremony with the scattering of her ashes in Quartermaster Harbor.
Brenno, Adele Tuesday, 27 Jul 2004
Adele Brenno of Vashon died July 16, 2004, on Vashon Island. She was 90 years old.
She was born in Cle Elum on May 5, 1914. She had lived the last two decades on Vashon.
Her husband, Harold Brenno, died earlier, as did her two sons.
Survivors include her stepchildren Bob and Diane Brenno, Betty and Bobby Lewis, George and Barbara Brenno and Barbara and Ken Cooper all of Vashon.
There will be no service at her request.
Remembrances can be made to the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Association.
Bowdish, Harley Waine Saturday, 08 May 2004
Harley Waine Bowdish, 83
Harley Waine Bowdish died May 8, 2004, in Sequim, Wash. He was 83 years old.
Mr. Bowdish was born June 13, 1920, in California.
He served in World War II in the South Pacific and returned home to operate service stations in Seattle before beginning his career with the Boeing Company. The highlight of his career at Boeing was piloting and training pilots on the Boeing Hydrofoil in Puget Sound, Asia and Europe.
He enjoyed long hours on the golf course, week-long elk hunting trips, fly fishing and boating with family and friends.
He lived 15 years on Vashon.
Friends and family say they remember him as a hard-working, kind, quiet, funny, loving husband and father who will be missed by everyone whose lives he touched.
Survivors include his wife Ellie, daughters Sandra Kreis and her husband Roger of Shelton, Barbara Knight of Poulsbo, and son Mike and his wife Lori of Redmond, grandchildren Jacob Kreis, Joanna Jacobson, Mary and Danielle Bowdish, great grandchildren Tyler, Corey, Cameron and Spencer Kreis, sister Rayma Burger and numerous nieces and nephews.
His wives Mary and Virginia and brothers Darrel and Mel died earlier.
Eagleson, Glen A Wednesday, 21 Jul 2004
Glen A. Eagleson died Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at his home in Renton. He was 75 years old.
Mr. Eagleson was born July 29, 1928 in Union, N.D. He married
in Milton, N.D., in October 1952. He retired from Boeing in 1987.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Joyce Juanita Eagleson, sons Larry Eagleson of Vashon, David Eagleson of Kent, Randy Eagleson of Renton, daughter Shelly Jo of Kent, sisters Gladys of Crockston, Minn., Alyce of Edinburg, N.D., Donna and Joyce, both of Woodburn, Ore., and three grandchildren.
Services were at Cross and Crown Lutheran Church. Burial was at Tahoma National cemetery.
Johnson, Johnny Thursday, 08 Jul 2004
Johnny Johnson, formerly of Vashon Island, died July 8, 2004, in Sun City, Ariz. He was 84 years old.
Survivors include his wife, sister, three children and many grand and great grandchildren.
Braun Funeral Home of Cashmere, Wash., was in charge of arrangements.
A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 17.
In lieu of flowers, donation in his memory to Cashmere First Baptist Church, 103 Aplets Way, Cashmere, Wash.
Quenneville, Lawrence J. Wednesday, 20 Oct 2004
Lawrence J. “Larry” Quenneville, died Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2004. He was 47 years old.
Mr. Quenneville was born to Michael and Freda Quenneville in Fort Wayne, Ind. on March 27, 1957.
He lived on Vashon and suffered from a lifelong illness, but that did not stop him from finding his passion — music. He loved to play the guitar.
He was loved by his family and will be missed by his father Michael and stepmother Nancy Quenneville; sisters Teresa, Suzette (Michael), Michelle and Renee; and two nieces and nephews.
His mother died earlier.
A funeral mass was said at St. John Vianney Catholic Church on Oct. 18.
Divis, John D. Saturday, 09 Oct 2004
John D. Divis, formerly of Vashon, died Oct. 9, 2004, at Whidbey General Hospital in Coupeville, Wash. He was 63 years old.
Mr. Divis was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Dec. 11, 1940.
He lived on Vashon for many years and retired from Vashon Sand and Gravel after a stroke in 1998.
Survivors include his wife Holly K. Divis of Vashon, son David Divis of Illinois, daughter Kim Turnbow of Oak Harbor, Wash. and 10 grandchildren.
A memorial service for John will during the 10:30 a.m. service, Sunday, Oct. 24, at the Vashon United Methodist Church.

Holtschlag, Delores "Peggy" Wednesday, 13 Oct 2004
Delores “Peggy” Holtschlag died Sept. 29, 2004, at West Seattle’s Admiral Heights Assisted Living of natural causes. She was 87 years old.
Born in New Madrid, Mo., on Feb. 19, 1917, Peggy spent her early years on a farm. She was orphaned at the age of 10 and spent the rest of her childhood in the households of various relatives. She did farm chores, including picking cotton, to earn her keep.
She married
Ralph Jacob Holtschlag in 1938, and moved with her family to Seattle in 1954. In 1974 the couple moved to Vashon to retire. Ralph died in 2000.
Peggy sold dahlias and produce a the Pike Place Market, as well as the early days of the Vashon Saturday Market.
She will be remembered by her family and friends, whose lives were enriched by her love, her friendliness and her resilient spirit.
Survivors include her daughter, Patricia Henry of Seattle and sons Steve of Columbia, S.C. and Tim of Vashon, as well as six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Caffey, Emma "Kate" Saturday, 21 Aug 2004
Emma G. “Kate” Caffey of Vashon died Aug. 21, 2004, in Seattle. She was 69 years old.
She was born April 12, 1935, in Waco, Texas, and lived there until she moved to California.
Kate attended college in Oregon and earned her bachelor’s degree in Community Service and Public Affairs in 1972. Kate discovered Vashon Island in 1976 and made the Island her home.
She enjoyed water, music, animals, people and travel.
In 1985, she and her partner travelled around the world together.
Survivors include her life partner Reva Sparkes of Vashon, her sister Carol McPeak of Stockton, Calif. and a niece of Modesto, Calif.
A celebration of Kate’s life will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, at the Grange.
Lunch will be provided. Islanders are invited and are asked to bring their favorite Kate story.
Contributions can be made in Kate’s honor to the Vashon Senior Center.
Frazier, Olive Louise Thursday, 12 Aug 2004
Olive Louise Frazier died Aug. 12, 2004, at her home on Vashon after an extended illness. She was 86 years old.
She was born Dec. 29, 1917, in Paulina, Ore., to Homer and Laura York.
She was married
to Donald W. Frazier on Dec. 26, 1941. She gave up her teaching career after marriage to raise a family. He died earlier.
Survivors include her six children: Sharon Palmer (Charlie) of Vashon, Bonnie Raume (Ron) of Vashon, Duane Frazier (Carmen) of Omak, Jackie Lorance (Dana) of Vashon, Elaine Ericksen (Erick) of Vashon and Diana Wahlman (Erik) of Shingletown, Calif. Additional survivors include 14 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter.
Services were Aug. 16 at Island Funeral Home.
Randall, Mary Catherine Sunday, 27 Jun 2004
Mary Catherine (Kay) Randall died on June 27, 2004. She was 84 years old.
Mrs. Randall was born Feb. 29, 1920, in Spencer, South Dakota. In 1940 she moved west to Oregon with her parents, joining other family members who were already in the area. Eventually she made her way to the Seattle area.
Mrs. Randall was a Jill-of-all trades, doing many different kinds of jobs including teaching, bookkeeping, accounting, carhopping, cashiering, helping Boeing build airplanes (bombers) and typing for the Navy. She once convinced her dentist he needed her as an office assistant.
She met her future husband, Gray Randall, while cocktail waitressing at the American Legion Club. They were married
in 1948.
Her next adventure lasted many years as she was the wife of a Foreign Service officer in the U.S. Embassy (CIA). She lived in many places around the world including Saigon; Hong Kong; McLean, Va., Rabat, Morocco; Brazzaville, Congo; Paris, France; Abidjan, Ivory Coast and Kampala, Uganda.
The couple retired in 1970 and came back to the the Seattle area and eventually settled on Vashon Island.
She had many interests including gardening, fishing, sewing and dancing. She belonged to the Vashon Island Golf and Country Club for many years and pursued her golf and bridge interests.
Friends and family say she was quick to smile, always a gracious hostess, and was game for just about anything. Her son Gray and his wife Jeanne will miss the twinkle in her eye, even at the end.
Other survivors include sisters Leah Scott of Canistota, S.D. and Alice Carey, of Portland, Ore., and numerous nieces and nephew
Galus, Catherine Mary Tuesday, 31 Aug 2004
Catherine Mary Galus died Aug. 31, 2004, after a sudden illness. She was 82 years old.
She was born Catherine Gorynski March 21, 1922, in Seattle.
She married
Frank Galus on Nov. 14, 1942, and worked in personnel at American Marietta (now Unifar) and the Seattle Post Intelligencer. She was a long-time West Seattle resident before moving to Issaquah. She volunteered for many years n the sewing group at Mt. St. Vincent.
She loved her family, gardening and feeding birds.
Survivors include her daughters, Veronica and her husband Gary Schroeder, Stephanie and her husband Daniel Fitzgerald, son John and his wife Georgia Galus, five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and a brother, Ray Gorynski. Her husband Frank died earlier as did her parents, sister Marge Morgan and brothers Richard and Henry.
Private services are planned. Memorials to a favorite charity are welcome.
