Kvisvik, Della Lucille Tuesday, 01 Apr 2003
Della Lucille Kvisvik, formerly of Vashon Island, died March 30, 2003, in Tacoma, Wash. She was 83 years old.
Born May 7, 1919, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Lucille Maud Cazenave and Dell Bronson Stockwell, Lucille lived on Vashon Island for over six decades.
Her husband of 46 years, Hjalmar, died in 1990.
Survivors include sisters Alice Atkinson and her husband Walter of California, and Peggy Steinheimer and her husband Jack of Nevada, and daughters Alyce Aaby and her husband Bob of Tacoma and Jerry Watson and her husband Hank of California, and son Edgar Owen and his wife Joyce of Texas, as well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
While on Vashon Island, Lucille and Hjalmar were the owners and operators of The Den Café, following which both were longtime employees of Beall’s Greenhouse.
Mrs. Kvisvik was a member of Bethel Church, where she enjoyed Bible study classes and fellowship. She also found pleasure in sewing, bowling and traveling to the ocean to dig clams.
Memorial services will be at Island Funeral Service on April 5, 2003. Call Island Funeral Home at 463-9300 for the time.

Dickinson, Margaret Saturday, 22 Mar 2003
Margaret V. Dickinson died March 22, 2003.
She was born Nov. 16, 1913,
She enjoyed travel, flowers, birds and cats and especially spending time with family and friends.
She had spent many years volunteering at the Bow Lake Garden Club and with the Group Health Ladies Auxiliary.
Her mother Margaret Morrow, father Nathaniel Dobbins, husband Victor Gibbons, brothers Pete and Ben Dobbins, and brother-in-law Al Windsor all died earlier.
Survivors include her sister Betty Windsor of Burien, sister-in-laws Vickie Dobbins of Port Orchard and Naoma Dobbins of Normandy Park, friend Bob Schroedel of Normandy Park, daughter Shannon Sudduth of Vashon Island, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren, loving nephew, nieces, and cousins.
A private family service will at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 27, at Forest Lawn in West Seattle.
Hudis, Mary E. "Liz" Thursday, 20 Mar 2003
Mary E. “Liz” Hudis of Vashon Island, died March 20, 2003, at the Vashon Community Care Center. She was 85 years old.
She was born August 5, 1917, in Missoula, Mont.
Survivors include a daughter, Alanna Hudis of Vashon.
Coulter, Vera LaVonne Copeland "Buzzy" Wednesday, 19 Mar 2003
Vera LaVonne Copeland Coulter of Vashon, known to many as “Buzzy, ” died March 19, 2003. She was 86 years old.
She was born in 1916 in Montgomery County, Iowa, to Charles and Delia Copeland and was the fourth of eight children.
While living in Iowa, she met John Coulter and they married
April 23, 1933. They raised two daughters, Sondra Kay and Deborah Jonette.
Mrs. Coulter will be remembered as a devoted wife and mother relocating to California, Nevada, and finally Vashon though in her heart “home” was always Red Oak. For the past five years, she lived at the Vashon Community Care Center.
In her earlier years she enjoyed many interests including gardening, playing cards and cooking for family gatherings. She was an avid sports fan, her favorite being professional baseball.
Her father, mother, husband, sisters Dorothy Gertrude, Lorene Evaline, Maxine Martha and brother Wayne LaVerne all died earlier.
Survivors include her sister Carmon Louise, her brothers Marion Wesley and Charles Duane, and daughters Sondra Gulledge, and Deborah Richards and their families, including seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, all living in the Northwest, and many other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held at the home of her daughter and son-in-law at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 5.

More, Donald Eugene Monday, 17 Mar 2003
Donald Eugene More, who lived on Vashon Island, died March 17, 2003, in Tacoma. He was 80 years old.
He was born in Seattle on June 4, 1922, the son of Catherine and Luther More.
Mr. More was a Mason, a member of the Ballard Elks and the Vashon Island Golf & Country Club. He was an avid golfer and card player. He also enjoyed Keno at any casino where he could find a game.
He was raised in Seattle but spent all of his summers at his summer home on Vashon.
For most of his working life, he was with the Seattle Engineering Department. He retired in 1976 and, with his wife Nancy Elizabeth, moved to Vashon.
After her death in 1986, he continued to live on Vashon during the summers and spent winters in Sun City, Ariz. The past couple of years he had been living at the Weatherly Inn, an assisted living facility in Tacoma.
Survivors include his two sons, Thomas L. More of Anacortes and Michael J. More of Vashon, five grandchildren, six great grandchildren and close friend and companion Betty Dybdro.
At his request, there will be no funeral, but a celebration of his life is being planned for family and friends at a later date.
Larsen, Julia Kamilla Monday, 17 Mar 2003
Julia Kamilla Larsen died March 17, 2003, at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle. She was 93 years old.
She was born April 18, 1909, in Portage, Wash, the fourth of seven children born to Laurits and Jorga Larsen.
She lived in the home built by her parents in the early 1900s on Maury Island. She attended Maury Grade School and Burton High School. She continued her education off island at Bellingham Normal School and became an elementary school teacher. He first position was at Lisabeula School where she taught grades 1-8 in one classroom.
Most of her years teaching were in Fall City, Wash., and later in Seattle at Jefferson and Georgetown elementary schools.
She attended Sunday School Class on Maury Island in the afternoons as ministers on the island took turns conducting church services. She chose to be baptized at the Burton Church and later accepted Christ as her savior at an evangelistic meeting sponsored by a very active young people’s group from the west side.
She shared apartments with her sister Grace on Broadway and then in Ballard. After her retirement, she moved back to the family home on Maury in 1997 where she lived until her recent illness took her to the hospital.
Julia loved to shop and was very good at finding bargains. She enjoyed beautiful dishes, china and teacups and was a very thoughtful, warm hostess.
Survivors include her special sister Grace and eight nephews and nieces, many grand nephews and niece and great grand nephews and nieces.
Services were last Saturday at Island Funeral Service Chapel followed by a graveside service at Vashon cemetery.
Arrangements were entrusted to Island Funeral Service.
King, Don Sunday, 16 Mar 2003
Don King died at his home in Burton March 16, 2003, with his wife, Gretchen, at his side. He was 74 years old.
He was born Sept. 30, 1928, in Los Angeles.
As a child he moved to Berkeley where he attended high school and after a two-year stint in the Army as a paratrooper, attended the University of California where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
After his college days, he returned to the Los Angeles area where he spent his entire business career with the same organization, reaching the position of president. The company was in the printing, packaging, and display of consumer products industry.
Max Factor was such a major account that Mr. King maintained an office at their headquarters in Hollywood. He was responsible for personally creating some of the Max Factor displays that were seen world wide in department stores.
An avid sailor, he participated in numerous races in California, off-shore and to Mexico. His favorite was his 32-foot sleek racing sloop, the “Trinket, ” which was a familiar sight off the coast of California.
In 1981, he and Gretchen visited a friend who had moved to Vashon. This part of the world was new to them, and they became enchanted with the island. They immediately made plans to move and did so later that year.
Just two weeks ago he stated that it was the best and smartest decision he could have ever made, a friend said. The friend said Mr. King dearly loved the island and the people, his friends and family. He gladly changed from the attire of his favorite shop on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills for the good things he found at Granny’s Attic.
He was active as a member of the Vashon Golf & Country Club and the Quartermaster Yacht Club where he berthed his ketch, the “Rocinante.”
Golfing, bridge, and cruising north to Canada every summer to him was an ideal life.
Survivors include his wife, Gretchen and his children, the twins, Kelly and Kevin King of Northridge, California; Darby of Suches, Georgia; Mark of Santa Rosa and Sara of Sebastopol, California; great memories, and a whole bunch of people who will sorely miss him.
A memorial service will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 30, at the Vashon Island Golf & Country Club.
At the request of the family, please do not send flowers but rather donate to an organization doing cancer research.
Smith, Theodore Gordon Thursday, 06 Mar 2003
Theodore (Ted) Gordon Smith of Stanwood died March 6, 2003. He was 74 years old.
He was born March 21, 1928, in Tukwila, Wash., to Robert “Chet” and Josephine Marie (Patowski) Smith.
Mr. Smith was a former member of the Elks in Ballard, did volunteer work and was always willing to help anyone and everyone, according to his friends.
He was a “Jack of all Trades” and the “Ultimate Packrat.” As a beloved father and wonderful husband who loved to tell stories, he was stubbornly opinionated and above all, loved by all who met him. Mr Smith, according to his family, was a gentle giant.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jean Smith, sons Gary (Karen) Smith, Mark Smith, Craig (Lisa) Smith, daughters Linda (Michael) Erben, Nancy (Pat) Dwyer, sister-in-law Joan Shanahan, grandchildren Bridgette, Katie, Sarah (Justin) Cress, Lyndsey, Michelle, Chelsea, Allison, Hannah and Nick Dwyer.
A time of visitation was at Shaefer-Shipman Funeral Home on Friday, March 7, and memorial and graveside services were at Evergreen Washeli cemetery on Monday, March 10.
The Smiths moved from Vashon about six months ago, according to the funeral home, after living many years on the island.
Memorial contributions may be given to Vashon Health Clinic or to Granny’s Attic.
Proffitt, Dorothy "Dot" Monday, 28 Jul 2003
Dorothy ‘Dot’ Rolando Therkelsen Bacon Proffitt died July 28, 2003, at her home on Vashon Island. She was 82 years old.
Mrs. Proffitt was born on May 11, 1921, in Centralia, Wash., to Stephen and Jennie Rolando.
She moved to Vashon at age 6 and learned to love life on the island that would be her home for the next 77 years. Her family home was on the top of Shawnee and the family grew and sold lilies.
Dot attended schools on Vashon, graduating from Vashon High School in 1937, where she skipped two years of school.
Not long after graduation, Dot married
Max Therkelsen, a mechanic who owned a garage at Center. They had one daughter, Janice Ann. After divorcing Max, Dot worked at Garla Acres growing garlic, which was being commercially sold at the time.
Dot married
Joseph Bacon in 1947, and they had two children, Steven and Angela. During their 20-year marriage, Dot was an active homemaker. She was active in the Rebeccas and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
She was also active in many traditional activities — crocheting, canning, knitting and gardening. But Dot was also proficient at what for women were non-traditional activities — hunting deer and pheasants as well as being a master geoduck hunter.
Following Joseph’s death in 1967, Dot cooked for the Baptist Assembly Grounds (Camp Burton) and worked at the Burton Store. Her involvement with the Eagles Auxiliary introduced her to Zola Proffitt, whom she married
on April 5, 1972. With Zola, six step children joined her family. She and Zola loved to travel, including to Arkansas for family reunions.
She also enjoyed bowling, golfing at the Vashon Island Golf & Country Club and walking the Burton Loop.
She was a loyal friend and a strong-willed woman who knew her own mind. She expected much out of her family and much from herself. A hard worker, Dot also loved to party, to dance to country and Western music and to celebrate holidays.
Survivors include her husband of 31 years, Zola Proffitt, her children Janice and her husband Tom McCasland of Evergreen, Colo., Steven Bacon of Vashon and Angela Nordling of Vashon and her step children Ron Proffitt, Sheriel and husband Bob Pilkington, Jerry Proffitt, Jim and wife Gerlinda Proffitt, Randy Proffitt and Carie and husband Tom Safford.
Other survivors include 19 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren as well as her sister Maxine Bice of Tukwila, two nephews, a niece and numerous cousins.
A service to celebrate her life was Saturday, Aug. 2, at the family home. A private interment preceded the service.
McEntire, Betty Jo Wednesday, 23 Jul 2003
Betty Jo McEntire, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, died peacefully in Edmonds, Wash., on July 23, 2003, with her family at her side. She was 71 years old.
She was born Sept. 11, 1931, in Seattle to Edward and Gladys LaSpronce.
Betty grew up in West Seattle, graduated from West Seattle High School and earned a degree in interior design from Cornish Institute.
She married
Melvin McEntire on Aug. 8, 1953; they resided in West Seattle until moving their family to Vashon in 1968.
Her father, mother and various aunts and uncles died earlier.
Survivors include her husband Melvin, son Michael and his wife Cind) McEntire, daughter Patty and her husband Scott Noble and her grandchildren Erin and Bryan McEntire and Nick and Katie Noble.
She was buried at Vashon Island cemetery on Saturday, July 26, after graveside service.
