Mary E. (Woods) Williams - Nov. 12, 2008
Mary Ellen (Woods) Williams, 79, a resident of Cosmopolis, died Wednesday morning, November 12, 2008 at Grays Harbor Health & Rehab Center in Aberdeen.
Mary was born August 30, 1929 in Centralia, Washington, to Arlie & Pearl Woods.
Mary played the trumpet in a family swing band through high school with her sisters and father, and many stories of her music and dance band entertained the family for many years.
Mary graduated from Centralia High School and married
the love of her life Fred H. Williams in 1949.
He died in 1997 after 47 years of marriage.
Mary and Fred moved to McCleary in 1962 and opened Fri-Mars In and Out drive in, that was a favorite of the many clam diggers and beach tourists.
Fri-Mars prospered until the freeway was completed and the traffic to the beaches and the Harbor began to take the faster way.
Mom was always adamant that they had the first and best hamburger and fry sauce and that people would drive miles for.
They moved to Cosmopolis where Mary became a homemaker, avid sports fan and catered to her childrens needs.
After the children married
, Mary worked for American Greeting Cards as a merchandiser.
She loved her job and met many new friends.
Mom lived for Christmas with her family and Christmas in the home was the most special time of the year.
She loved shopping and more especially taking her granddaughters shopping on one of her shop till you drop sprees. The granddaughters could never keep up!
Mary loved to watch movies at home, was an avid bowler, loved to fish and was the ultimate family supporter of all their outdoor activities.
One memory that will stay with the children was the yearly hunting and camping trips that her family made for many years.
She was the consummate camp cook, hunting companion and mother.
She will be missed, thought of daily and always loved.
Mary is survived by a daughter Cindy Stevens of Cosmopolis; son Chris and his wife Jennifer Williams of Elma; two grandchildren, Saleana Stevens of Oregon, and Cardi Williams-Hoffman and husband Justin from Olympia, a very special niece Shari Corrigan and husband Mike from Shelton; two sisters, Arlene and Pat; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
There will be a graveside service for Mary at 11 am, Friday, November 14, 2008 at Forest Hill cemetery in Cosmopolis, WA.

Allen L. 'Bud' Fletcher - Dec. 7, 2008
Longtime Harborite Allen Leroy Bud Fletcher died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital. He was 87.
He had been a commercial fisherman out of Westport since before World War II, aboard the Betty Jo.
He retired in 1990.
A potluck memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 13, at the Ocosta Rec Center.
Cremation arrangements were by Fern Hill Funeral Home, Aberdeen.
Elsie Laverne Powell - Dec. 2, 2008
Elsie Laverne Powell, 95, a longtime resident of Aberdeen, died Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at Montesano Health & Rehab Center in Montesano.
Elsie was born June 26, 1913 in Wynot, Nebraska to Wilson and Florence (Nordike) Eisley.
She was one of thirteen children.
She was raised in Lincoln, Nebraska and came to Aberdeen in 1967.
Elsie was married
to Howard Powell. Elsie was an in home caregiver for many years in the Aberdeen area and had worked in the New China Restaurant in the kitchen before that.
Quilting was her passion and one quilt she made in honor of the Iran hostages, now hangs in the Smithsonian in Washington D.C.
She liked to make Quillows Pillow and blanket combined) she also made quilts for babies.
She enjoyed teaching her grandchildren to make quilts and sew.
She also did embroidery.
Elsie is survived by her son Larry Dupsky of Aberdeen; and a daughter Laverne and her husband Bruce Travers of Montesano; several grandchildren, many great grandchildren and some great- great-grandchildren.
Elsie was preceded in death by a son David Powell and a daughter Dorothy Breshears.
Per Elsies request, there will be no service.
She will be inurned with her daughter at Fern Hill cemetery, in Aberdeen.
The family suggests that donations be made to the Aberdeen Animal Shelter, 210 E. Market St., Aberdeen, WA 98520.

Timothy Allen Michael Bailey - Nov. 28, 2008
McCLEARY - Timothy Allen Michael Bailey, infant son of Carrie Bailey and Greg Bouch of Elma, died at birth at Mark Reed Hospital in McCleary, Nov. 28.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 9, in the chapel at Fern Hill Funeral Home, Aberdeen.
Elsie M. Campbell - Jan. 6, 2009
Longtime resident of Aberdeen, Elsie Mae Campbell, 95, died Tuesday, January 6, 2009 in Aberdeen.
Mrs. Campbell was born in McCleary, October 22, 1913 the daughter of William and Caroline (VonBargen) VanKirk.
On December 31, 1934, she and John Peter Jack Campbell were married
.
Both worked for years at Grays Harbor Chair Mfg. Co. in Hoquiam and enjoyed outdoor activities together.
Among their favorite activities were fishing, camping and clamming.
Jack died in 1967.
In 1975, Elsie took early retirement at age 62.
Elsie had a very active retirement.
She continued to clam, pick wild blackberries and mushrooms, garden and played cards.
Her passion for gardening led her to be active in garden clubs, participating in workshops, and attending gardening shows.
She traveled to Alaska with her niece, Carla.
With her sister, Hazel, took a Caribbean cruise and traveled to Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii.
Through the years, she would visit with her daughter, Sheila and her family at Camano Island.
She was a member of the Civic Garden Club, Pinochle Club, Sociable Senior Club (formerly Hoquiam REAC), Aberdeen Eagles Aerie (formerly a member of Hoquiam Eagles), and played bingo one of her weekly enjoyments.
Elsie felt strongly about living in the Aberdeen and Hoquiam community. She will be greatly missed by friends and family.
She is survived by her daughter, Sheila Mae Ferguson (Ralph) of Camano Island; four grandchildren: David Ferguson (Tina) of Bothell, Pamela Ferguson (Bob Johnson) of Sammamish, Russell Ferguson of Everett, and Bradley Ferguson (Kadi) of Camano Island; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
She was preceded in death by her four siblings, Edward Van Kirk, Stella Clark, Pearl Dubay and Hazel Peterson.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm Saturday, January 24, 2009 at Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.
A reception will follow the service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Salvation Army, 118 Wishkah St. Aberdeen, 98520.

James S. 'Jim' B Burton - Jan. 24, 2009
James 'Jim' B Burton passed away Jan. 24, 2009, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital surrounded by his family members.
He had put up a courageous fight against his cancer before going home.
Jim was born March 22, 1953, to Francis and Betty (Powell) Burton and was raised in Aberdeen.
He married
Pauline Arndt on June 25, 1977, and they spent their married
life in Aberdeen.
Jim was born to be a truck driver and drove log, dump, lowboy, tanker and container trucks for over 35 years.
His son, Ed followed in his fathers footsteps and became what Jim referred to as a great driver.
Jim enjoyed the outdoors and loved to go fishing and calm digging with his sons.
Jeff especially remembers clam digging in the dark (with no lantern!) and fishing in the rain.
If you couldnt find him at home he would probably be with his brothers and sisters and his Big Book sharing what he learned in the last 18 years.
Jim wanted to be remembered for his smile and his love of life.
He was a caring man and many people were fortunate to have had him touch their lives.
His last year with us found him fishing with Davey and drag racing his brothers 28 Ford sedan.
Jim believed that you are to live life to the fullest and when it comes time to go you slide sideways into Heaven hollering Wahoo, what a ride!. He will be truly missed by many.
Jim is survived by his wife, Pauline at the family home in Aberdeen; son, Jeff Muhlhauser of Aberdeen; two granddaughters, Jordan Ann Muhlhauser and Alyx Alaina Muhlhauser; and son, Edward Muhlhauser of Fond Dulac, Wis.; and two grandsons, Jakob Dean Labisch and Joshua John Muhlhauser.
Jim is also survived by his three brothers, Bob of Hoquiam, Michael (Barbara) of Aberdeen and Roger (Mary) of Hoquiam.
There will be a pot-luck gathering of family and friends at the Cosmopolis Lions Club on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009, from 1-5 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

A. Marie Gilbert - Dec. 29, 2008
A. Marie Gilbert, 83, a longtime resident of Hoquiam, died at Grays Harbor Health and Rehabilitation Center in Aberdeen, Monday, Dec. 29, 2008. She was born in Yakima, Feb. 15, 1925, to Ragnar and Gladys (Grimes) Friberg.
The family moved to Tacoma and then to the Harbor where Marie graduated from Aberdeen Weatherwax High School in 1943.
As a young woman during World War II, she worked in the Naval Shipyard at Bremerton.
Years later she owned and operated a ceramics shop in Hoquiam.
She married
Leslie Gilbert, Sr., in 1945, and they were later divorced.
Marie was a member of the Light and Life Community Church in Hoquiam and enjoyed making quilts, needle work, writing poetry and reading her Bible and praying.
She is survived by a son, Leslie, Monroe; daughter, Alice Corbus of Hoquiam; very close friend, Don Rochon of Aberdeen; six grandchildren, Beth Morrison, Meghan Gilbert, John Henry Gilbert, Jacque Gilbert, Rachel Stroup and Kelli Shaffroth; and four great-grandchildren.
A son, John Gilbert died before her in 2000, and two brothers, Alan and Jim Friberg in 1981.
Her life was lived in such a way that all who met her never forgot her. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Rose Delima Stidham - Jan. 24, 2009
Rose Delima Stidham, 95, a longtime resident of Aberdeen and former sales clerk at Kress Dept. Store, died Saturday morning, January 24, 2009 at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen.
Rose was born February 20, 1913 in Argyle, Minnesota to Edmund and Catherine (Safranski) Charboneau.
At age 11 her family moved to Portland, Ore. where she lived until moving to Aberdeen.
Rose married
Robert E. Carroll.
He passed away in 1966.
She then married
Berlie Stidham in 1969.
He passed away in 1996.
Rose worked for many years at Kress as a sales clerk and retired in 1978.
She loved to sew and crochet. She liked to watch CNN & CSPAN and talk politics.
Rose is survived by a daughter, Joanne Beard of Denver, Colo.; brother Edward Charboneau; sisters, Rena McFeron, Agnes Beane and Lorraine Davis, all of the Portland area; daughter-in-law, Lois Carroll of Aberdeen; a granddaughter, seven grandsons, many great- grandchildren and great- great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by son Richard E. Carroll; brother, Edmund Charboneau; sisters, Bernice Mauk and Marcella Olsen; grandchildren Jeanine Beard and David Carroll, and great-grandson Andrew Beard.
There will be a time of visitation and viewing from 9-2 pm Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at Fern Hill Funeral Home followed by a funeral at 2:00 pm in Fern Hills Chapel.
Burial will take place at Fern Hill cemetery.

Russell Whiting Hindman - Jan. 18, 2009
Russell Whiting Hindman 91, longtime resident of Aberdeen, died at Evergreen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Olympia, Sunday, January 18, 2009.
He was born in Seattle, March 23, 1917, the son of Thomas and Esther (Whiting) Hindman.
The family came to Grand Mound in Thurston County and Russell attended grade school there. He played baseball at Grand Mound School and the team won the division championship. He went on to Rochester High School where he played tennis and he and his twin brother, Tom, were cheerleaders.
Russell graduated in 1935.
Russell worked as a cook in logging camps at Onalaska before he started Coast Poultry Co. in Aberdeen when he was 18.
He supplied chickens to butcher shops on the Harbor and had a warehouse on F Street. In 1939, Russell was voted Best Looking Truck Driver.
He operated the business until he was 25 when he joined to Coast Guard to serve during WW II.
He had been a cook on board the lightships he served.
Upon his release from the service in October, 1945, he and a friend, Bob Larson, established Duffy's Tavern on Simpson Ave. in Aberdeen.
They opened on Christmas Eve 1945 and the business has been in continuous operation ever since, first as the tavern, and in 1969 after food service became the bigger end of the business, the name was changed to Duffys Restaurant.
They later had restaurants in Hoquiam and East Aberdeen.
Russell retired from the business operation in 1979.
Russell liked to travel in RVs, having several travel trailers and motor homes.
He had a home in Arizona where he would spend winters, driving his motor home there each time right up until just a couple of years ago.
He also liked to fish out of Westport and he owned several boats.
Russell remodeled several homes and taught his grandson, Mike Balagot, the tricks of remodeling.
After he retired at the age of 62, he obtained his private pilots license.
But he still liked to cook and bake, and was famous for his lemon cakes, sharing them with anyone for any occasion.
He married
Maxine Petticore in Aberdeen in 1938 and she died here in 1990 after 51 years of marriage.
Russell then married
Olga Lesich Parr in 1991 and she survives in Hoquiam.
He is also survived by two daughters: Cheryl Bales of Shelton and Janis Hindman of Hoquiam; his twin brother: Tom of Aberdeen; two grandchildren: Lisa Woodland of Aberdeen and Mike Balagot of Lacey; four great-grandchildren: Adam Woodland, Chehalis, Aaron Woodland, all of Aberdeen, and Morgan and Paige Balagot, both of University Place, Wash.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday, January 23, 2009 in the chapel at Fern Hill Funeral Home.
A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 24, 2009 at the United Christian Church, 300 1st St., Aberdeen.
Interment with military honors by the Grays Harbor All Services Honor Guard will be in Fern Hill cemetery.
A reception will follow at the Aberdeen Elks Lodge.
The family suggests memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Cripple Children, 3101 SW Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, OR 97201.
