Darwin Morris Crites - Nov. 20, 2008

Darwin Morris Crites, 86, former resident of Aberdeen, died at the Hawthorne House, Tumwater, Thursday, November 20, 2008. He was born in Webster Springs, West Virginia August 12, 1922, the son of Ray C. and Dora L. (Hamon) Crites.

He came with his family to Montesano as a boy and graduated from Montesano High School in 1940.

Darwin worked at the shipyards in Tacoma from 1940 to 1942.

He married the former Mildred I. Hogberg in Aberdeen in June 1942. Darwin joined the Army Air Force in 1942 and served in the 29th Bomber Group in the Pacific Theater. He was discharged in 1945.

He returned to the Harbor and worked for Graystone Concrete Company and in 1971 established Reliable Roofing. He operated the company until he retired in 1998, but continued to work in roofing sales until just a few years ago. He moved to Tumwater 2 years ago.

His wife Mildred, of 64 years, died here November 16, 2006.

Darwin was a member of Light and Life Community Church of Hoquiam and the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars of Aberdeen.

He enjoyed his family and life long friendships, hunting and gardening.

He is survived by two sons, Daniel M. Crites, Spokane, and Steven James Crites, Olympia; three daughters, Carol Ann Lewin, Tumwater, Nancy L. Crites, Phoenix, Ariz., and Janet D. Baker; two brothers, Elwin R. Crites, Yuma, Ariz., and Oshel C. Crites, Tumwater; two sisters, Martha G. Mollett, Mesa, Ariz., and Phern E. Yakovich, Olympia; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Douglas L. Crites; and a sister, Nelda B. Kelly.

Visitation will be held 1:00 to 8:00 pm, Monday, November 24, 2008 in the chapel at Fern Hill Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 1:00 pm Tuesday, November 25th. Interment will take place in Fern Hill cemetery.

Arrangements are by: Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

Edward A. Brincken - Nov. 19, 2008

Edward August Brincken of Aberdeen died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008, at his home. He was 56.

He worked for the National Conservation Resource Services for the last 30 years.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Nov. 24, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Aberdeen.

Arrangements are by Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

Ellen Hokanson - Nov. 25, 2008

Ellen E. Hokanson, a resident of Aberdeen since 1963, died at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen, Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008. She was 84.

She had been a bookkeeper for some of the lumber mills of the Harbor for many years.

A memorial service is planned for mid-December at St. Andrews Episcopal Church and will be announced in a complete obituary later in the Daily World.

Arrangements are by Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

Ernest Frank May - Nov. 22, 2008

Ernest Frank May, 92, a longtime resident of the Harbor, died at his home in Aberdeen, Saturday, November 22, 2008. He was born in Romania April 7, 1916, the son of Frank and Emma Mai.

He came with his family to the United States at the age of 11. They settled in the Adna area and he graduated from Boistfort High School in 1934.

Ernie came to Aberdeen in the late 1930s and had worked in lumber mills. He married Anne Petrovich May 25, 1940. Ernie had worked as a warehouseman for Grays Harbor Public Utilities for many years and had retired thirty years ago.

He was a member of the Aberdeen Eagles and joined with the Swansons coffee klatch many mornings. He also liked to fish, hunt, raise a vegetable garden and go to Reno once in a while.

Besides his wife of 68 years, Anne, Ernie is survived by a daughter, Shirley Smith of Hoquiam; grandson, Steven Smith and a great-granddaughter, Devon Smith; and several nieces and nephews and relatives in the Raymond area.

Visitation will be held in the chapel at Fern Hill Funeral Home, Monday from 9 am until service time. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 am in Fern Hill cemetery.

Arrangements have been entrusted to; Fern Hill Funeral Home, Aberdeen.

Henry L. Sherman - Nov. 4, 2008

Hoquiam resident Henry Louis Sherman, former truck driver for Pettit Oil Co., died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, at this home. He was 70.

There will be a time of visitation from 1 to 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 7, at Fern Hill Funeral Home. A memorial service will take place at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 8, at Light and Life Community Church in Hoquiam.

Harold L. Shook - Nov. 10, 2008

Harold Lee Shook, 75, a longtime resident of Central Park and former Assistant Chief for Central Park Fire Dept., died Monday, November 10, 2008 at Pacific Care Center in Hoquiam.

Harold was born, June 8, 1933 in Sandpoint, Idaho to Kenneth M. and Marie H. (Cochennette) Shook. His family moved to Port Angeles and then to Hoquiam before moving to Central Park when Harold was eight. He graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1951. Later that year on November 16th, Harold married Mary Teman in Aberdeen. She resides at the family home.

Harold was a 57-year member of the Carpenters Union Local #317 in Aberdeen and had worked for Franciscovich Inc, General contractors for fifteen years and also for Rognlins. Harold had been the Recording Secretary for the union for 28 years.

Harold was an avid scuba diver and had taught diving at the YMCA. He loved to go sailing and do underwater photography. He enjoyed woodworking and had made wooden boats. He made toys after his injury for kids in Haiti and go-carts for the neighbor kids.

Harold was an EMT and First Responder for the Central Park Fire Dept. for 26 years and Assistant Chief for 15 years. He taught EMT training at Grays Harbor Community College when the program first started.

Harold is survived by his wife Mary of 56 years of Central Park; son, Tom and his wife Paula of Satsop; daughter, Connie and her husband Rory Barreith of Cosmopolis; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

There will be a memorial service for Harold at 2:00 pm Saturday, November 15, 2008 at Central Park Baptist Church. A private burial was held at Fern Hill cemetery, Aberdeen.

The family suggests that donations can be made to either: The Central Park Fire Dept., 6317 Olympic Hwy, Aberdeen, WA 98520 or Central Park Baptist Church, 6308 Central Park Drive, Aberdeen, WA 98520.

Arrangements are through; Fern Hill Funeral Home Aberdeen.

Hazel H. Wormstedt - Nov. 1, 2008

Hazel H. Wormstedt, 84, a Westport resident since 1961, died at her home there Saturday, November 1, 2008. She was born in StaffordSprings, Conn., the daughter of Jospeh and Lydia (Robert) Fisher. She attended schools there and had worked for Pratt & Whitney, building aircraft engines during World War II.

She married William A. Wormstedt in Stafford Springs in 1950. They came to Westport in 1961 when he was stationed with the Coast Guard. Upon his discharge they continued to live there. Mr. Wormstedt died here in 1978.

Hazel had been a homemaker and mother to her children, but she also worked for the Ocosta School District until her retirement in 1989.

In 1988 she met Austin Vaal in Westport and they have continued their relationship through the years. They have traveled many places including Alaska cruises and a trip to Branson, Mo. They also went on a cruise on the QE2 to the Mediteranean, visiting Africa, Monte Carlo, Italy, Ireland and England before flying home on the Concorde.

She was a member of St. Pauls Catholic Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post No. 3057 of Westport. She liked to travel and work crossword puzzles. According to her family she made a mean apple pie.

Hazel is survived by her companion, Austin Vaal, Westport; a son: William A. Jr., Shoreline; two daughters: Kathy A. Jarrett, Westport and Peggy A. Mooney, Petersburg, Alaska; and four grandchildren: Tom and Tavia A. Wormstedt, Sara Mooney and Billy Jarrett. She was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.

A funeral service will be held at 1 pm Friday, November 7, 2008, in the chapel at Fern Hill Funeral Home, Aberdeen. Burial will take place in Fern Hill cemetery, Aberdeen.

The family suggests memorial may be made to the cancer fund at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 3057, 211 E. Pacific Ave., Westport, WA 98595

Arrangements are entrusted to; Fern Hill Funeral Home of Aberdeen.

James Chester McCormick - Nov. 7, 2008

James Chester McCormick went home to be with the Lord early Friday morning, November 7, 2008 at his family home.

He was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, March 2, 1941 to the late Raymond and Rose McCormick.

Fishing, hunting and helping others were some of the things he loved to do, but being with his family and his many friends was the thing he loved the most. Jim worked as a commercial fisherman at 15 years old and then worked as a Lather for 45 years and was a member of the Carpenters Union Local #1144.

Jim owned and operated McCormick Construction, Inc., from 1997-2000. He belonged to the Hoquiam Eagles for 35 years. Jim was a wonderful and talented man that was deeply loved by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.

Jim is survived by his wife, Marian of 49 years; children, Susan McCormick of Hoquiam, Barbara Forbes of Olympia, Carolyn Bowers of Aberdeen and Jim McCormick of Hoquiam; grandchildren, Jennifer, Marian, Desiree, Sharon, Adam, Travis, Xavier, Whitney, Taylor and Parker; great- grandchildren, Keevan, Gwendeln, Zachary and Luke; brothers, Pat Howell and Robert McCormick; sisters, Dorthy Tosland, Mary Page, and Linda Caraway. Jim was preceded in death by brothers Larry and Eddie Ray McCormick.

There will be a time of visitation 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm Friday, November 14, 2008 and 9:00 am to 12:00 pm Saturday, November 15, 2008 at Fern Hill Funeral Home.

A graveside service will take place at Fern Hill cemetery at 1:00 pm, followed by a Memorial service and reception at the Wishkah Valley Community Church 4281 Wishkah Rd, Aberdeen at 2:00 pm, Saturday.

Janice M. Tronson - Nov 8, 2008

Olympia Janice Marie Tronson of Olympia died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008, at Puget Sound Healthcare Center in Olympia. She was 78.

She was born in White Star and lived much of her life in Grays Harbor and Thurston counties.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 29 at Forest Funeral Home in Olympia.

Kenneth Boo Graham

Ocosta resident Kenneth Boo Graham died Friday, Nov. 14, 2008, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen. He was 49.

There will be a celebration of his life held at 1 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 30, at the Ocosta Rec Hall.

Cremation arrangements are by Fern Hill Funeral Home of Aberdeen.

Leo Albert Pilas - Nov. 13, 2008

Leo Albert Pilas, 67, a former resident of Aberdeen, died Thursday, November 13, 2008 at Cristwood Nursing Center in Seattle, following a four year battle with prostate cancer.

Leo was born February 28, 1941 in Aberdeen to Leo Joseph and Mabel (Pearson) Pilas.

He graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1960 and then attended Grays Harbor College for two years. He joined the United States Air Force for four years working with the Security Services. After being Honorably Discharged he moved to Seattle where he worked for Safeco Insurance from 1968-1976 and then for Prodata Systems, Inc. of Bothell from 1977 until his retirement last year where he worked as an Account Executive.

Leo loved sailing on his sailboat, skiing, hiking, bike riding and photography. He also enjoyed playing golf.

Leo is survived by his sister Kathy and husband Michael Martinelli of Edmonds, and brother Jim Pilas of Des Moines, also a niece Sherry and husband Aarron Lawson of Seattle.

Per Leos request, there will be no services. He will be inurned at Fern Hill cemetery in Aberdeen.

He had requested that donations be made to either the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 202, Aberdeen, WA 98520 or your favorite charity.

Arrangements are through; Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

Mabel Paulson - Nov. 4, 2008

Mabel Paulson passed peacefully at The Willapa Harbor Health Care in Raymond, Washington November 4, 2008.

She was born in Aberdeen May 14, 1920 and graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1939.

Mabel married Martin Paulson in Seattle in 1950. At the time, she was working for Boeing on the B-52s. She witnessed the flying of the Spruce Goose.

Martin and Mabel settled in Grayland where she assisted in the family cranberry farm and was a homemaker.

She enjoyed her winters in Desert Hot Springs and at the time of her passing missed her many friends whom she is with now.

Mabel was proud of her Finnish heritage, and visited Scandinavia and Russia. She also was a member of the Finnish Lodge.

Mabel is survived by her husband of 58 years, Martin of Grayland; a daughter Janice Scarboro of Freemont, Calif., a son and daughter-in-law, Marty and Kris Paulson in Grayland; and a grandson, Ryan Paulson of Seattle. Mabel was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Jennifer Paulson in 2000.

Graveside service for Mabel will be held at 1:00 pm, Monday, November 10,2008 at Fern Hill cemetery in Aberdeen.

The family suggests that donations be made to The Jennifer Paulson Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 1851, Westport, WA 98595.

Arrangements are entrusted to Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.
