Melba Josephine Sheppard
Melba Josephine Sheppard passed away quietly November 20, 2003 in her home that she so loved, with family at her side.
She was born in 1912 in Sydney, MT to Joseph and Emma Creech, moved to Washington when she was young and lived in many areas including Spokane and the Yakima Valley where she graduated high school in 1926 from Mabton. She married James "Ted" Sheppard in 1936 and they made their home in the Everett area. Melba worked in the business field as bookkeeper/credit manager for the Everett City Bus Lines, Erickson Brothers Furniture, H.O. Seiffert Co. and Western Consolidated Cedar. She sold real estate for Begis Realty, owned and operated the Laurel Drive Grocery and Kar-Mel Realty and her final working years were with Providence Hospital and General Hospital Credit Unions before retirement in 1987.
Her legacy is not really where she lived, what she did, or where she worked. Her home and family defined her. Nothing meant more to her than her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. As the matriarch of our family, she kept the door to her home open to any family member at any stage of life, with any need - no questions asked, no key needed. As her grandchildren grew and brought friends to the home, Melba became known as "Gram" to all who visited and all were given the same love. Friends too, were always welcomed with grace. It was important to her to know that her guests were comfortable and cared for. Even as her health declined, she would fret if visitors were not offered nourishment.
The family will always remember her grace, her dignity, her sense of humor and her love of Big Band music - growing up meant Lawrence Welk on Saturday night and Guy Lombardo on New Year's Eve. We will remember her involvement with politics, sometimes baiting her just a bit to get a good argument going. She spent much time phoning Senators, Representatives and even the President if she felt they were not handling things as they should.
Melba is survived by her son Jerry (Nancy) Sheppard; daughter Vicki (Robert) Adams; daughter-in-law Mary Jean Russell; grandchildren, Stephanie (Steve) Minter, Brad (Linda) Sheppard, Barrett Sheppard, Danya (David) Toohey, Erin (Les) Herman, Mike Sheppard, Jill (John) Ferguson, Jennifer (Travis) Warthen, Joseph (Kelly) Adams; 14 great grandchildren; and many friends who loved her.
She was preceded in death by her husband James T. Sheppard; her son Dennis Sheppard; her grandson Jamie Adams; her brothers, Robert and Sidney Creech; and her parents.
The family wishes to thank Providence Home Health and Hospice for their support and friendship during these past few months.
Visitation will be held on Saturday from 1:00 until 5:00pm and on Monday from 10:00am until the service. The Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, November 24, 2003 at 11:00am at Purdy & Walters with Cassidy Funeral home.
