Rev. Willet Justin Bowerman
Rev. Willet Justin Bowerman passed away August 14, 2003.
He was born on Flag Day, June 14, 1909 in Damascus, OR. He was the oldest child of a farmer and sawmill worker. Three sisters rounded out Willet's family, Hazel, Ethel and Evelyn. As the family grew it became known throughout the community for its musical talent.
At age 10 Willet went to a free Methodist camp meeting, and there made a decision to accept Jesus Christ as his Savior. In 1929 he entered Seattle Pacific College and received a B.A. Degree in History. All through college he sang in the Victory quartet, which gave him a scholarship paying his tuition. He also paid his living expenses with summer jobs picking cherries and apricots, and putting up hay. He married his college voice teacher, Verna Fink, further proving the importance of music in his life. After college he moved to Illinois, singing in a select choir in Chicago and working door-to-door for five years as a vacuum cleaner salesman. He admitted that his sales experience was good training to build confidence into a young man who had a tendency to be withdrawn.
In January 1938, Willet felt called of God to enter the ministry and began a Free Methodist pastoral career that included churches in Davenport Iowa, Illinois, and seven churches in the State of Washington (Bremerton, Ballard, Sedro Woolley, Snohomish, Bothell, Quincy and Wenatchee). Every church he served grew during his tenure.
Willet and Verna had four children, Jay Bowerman and his wife Vi of Austin, TX, Mary Bowerman Gunhus and her husband Helmer of Nine Mile Falls, WA, Myrtle Bowerman Isaak Hintz and her husband Helmut of Ephrata, WA, and Glenn Bowerman and his wife Naomi of Seattle, WA.
Verna died while she and Willet were serving in Bothell. Friends suggested that Willet meet Hazel Moran, a widow who was a dorm mother at Seattle Pacific College. He called her for a date and they had a 5 month courtship playfully watched by Hazel's girls in the dorm. They were married June 1967. She passed away in August 2000.
Willet, at the age of 64, was encouraged by his son Jay to begin an exercise program. He set a goal of running 1,000 miles a year. Willet became interested in the Kenneth Cooper aerobics points system, and demonstrated extraordinary discipline to earn the necessary 100 points a week through walking, jogging and working out on his exercise bike and trampoline.
A few months after Hazel's passing Willet announced to his family that it was not meant for man to live alone. His daughter Myrtle recommended that he call Vera Iverson, which he did. Vera and he were freshman together at Seattle Pacific College in 1929. Willet later was her pastor for eight years in Snohomish. He called Vera and asked her to lunch. At the age of 90, he drove from Wenatchee to Warm Beach, took Vera to lunch and drove back to Wenatchee in the same day. They were married on the 20th of April 2001. Vera was a godly, encouraging and loving wife.
Willet Bowerman was truly an amazing man. There is no way to count the number of people who have been impacted by his gracious, compassionate visitation ministry, one he continued to carry on even though officially retired.
Willet was preceded in death by his wives, Verna and Hazel; and two of his sisters, Hazel Ebey and Ethel Keller.
He is survived by is wife Vera Iverson Bowerman; his sister Evelyn Gossett; his four children and their spouses; 15 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren. He is also survived by stepchildren, Gayle Moran Corea and her husband Chick, Marv Moran and his wife Karen, Virgil Iverson and his wife Norma Jean, Verlyn Iverson and his wife Mariam, and many step grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a step daughter Velma Mae Iverson Touma.
The Memorial Service will be held Sunday, August 24th at 6:00 p.m. at the Cedar Lodge Chapel, located at the Warm Beach Camp and Conference Center near Stanwood, WA.
Memorials may be made to InterVarsity Fellowship, P.O. Box 7895, Madison, WI 53707. Willet's granddaughter Karen and her husband Steve Lutin are on staff with InterVarsity.
Rosemarie Randall
Rosemarie "Rosi" Randall passed away peacefully at her Edmonds home on August 14, 2003.
She was born to Emil and Berta Gersdorf, the fifth of six children on March 26, 1928 in Munich, Germany. At an early age, she discovered ballet, her passion and true love. She worked very hard and was able to make a career in her chosen art and performed in many cities throughout Germany, even during WWII. She met and fell in love with Walter Randall while he was stationed in Germany. They married and he brought her to the states in 1958. They came to Washington in 1963, choosing this area because of its similarities to her beloved Bavaria. She satisfied her love for ballet by teaching in her home for many years. She also conducted acrobatic and exercise classes for several years, always including graceful movements, and is remembered fondly by many of her students. She balanced her teaching with keeping house for her family, which included five children. Walter and Rosemarie were very active and enjoyed a wealth of friends. They loved to sing, dance and travel and made many trips back to Germany to visit with family and friends. The last several years Rosi struggled with her health but was still determined to enjoy swimming, her beautiful garden and her many, many friends. She will be missed by all those who knew her, but we know that she has found peace.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister Melly Samberger; and her two brothers, Max and Werner Gersdorf. Surviving her is her beloved husband, Walter R. Randall; her five children, Werner (Beckye) Randall, Evelyn Steele (Paul), Diana Kushnick (Walter), Norman (Robbin) Randall, and Ellenore Schleitweiler (Troy); and her 12 grandchildren, Scott, Rick, Jeremy, Kenny, Daniele, Ben, Nick, Jim, Jessica, Samantha, Jacquelyn, and Nicole; and her two sisters Hilde and Heidi residing in Munich.
