DALE COVERSTONE

Dec. 30, 1932 -- June 12, 2003

Dale Coverstone was born in Portland, Ore., on Dec. 20, 1932, and raised in Medford, Ore., graduating from Medford Senior High School in 1950.

Dale served in the Air Force from 1951 to 1954, during which he was primarily stationed as a radar operator in post-World War II Germany.

After his discharge from the Air Force, Dale returned to Oregon to attend college. He was awarded a bachelor of science degree from Oregon State University in 1958. He later returned to college and received a bachelor of landscape architecture (B.L.A.) degree from University of Oregon in 1969.

While attending OSU, Dale met Jane Pattsner of Port Townsend, Wash., whom he married on March 23, 1958.

Dale owned a landscape architecture office in Medford, Ore., for over 25 years, during which he received awards for his designs throughout the area. One of only two landscape architects in Southern Oregon when he began his career, Dale designed many landmark sites. His projects included private homes, commercial buildings, and golf courses.

Through his work, Dale was able to combine his love of plants and nature with an enjoyment of interacting with people as he helped them create a pleasing environment. People appreciated his knowledge and vision, his attention to detail, and the kind and gracious manner he had with all people.

Dale was part of many organizations in Medford and Jacksonville, Ore., his family's home after 1972. He was very involved with the First Presbyterian Churches of Medford and Jacksonville and sang in the choir of each. He was also active with the Airport Commission, Rotary Club and the Jacksonville Planning Commission.

He enjoyed many recreational activities as well, including outdoor recreation, singing in a local barbershop quartet, and coaching little league softball.

In the mid-1980s, Dale undertook a second career and became a financial planner. In 1987, he and his wife moved closer to her birthplace and the open waters of Puget Sound, where Dale was able to pursue a lifelong ambition of learning to sail. He truly loved being on the water and spent as much time on his boat as he could.

They moved first to Mukilteo, Wash., then Port Townsend, where Dale remained active and continued to sing in the Presbyterian churches of each city.

In Port Townsend, Dale became involved with the Ecumenical Christian Helping Hands Organization (ECHHO), helping to provide needed assistive services, medical equipment and companionship to those who were in need and may not have met the criteria for help elsewhere.

Dale's service with ECHHO was only a more-visible example of the values and ideals that he maintained throughout his life. He was known for thinking of others before himself, and for giving of himself before asking of others.

Those whose lives he touched will remember his kindness, his charity, his compassion and his thoughtfulness. His family will always remember his leadership, his generosity, and his love.

We will say he died this year. What we will mean is that we can no longer see him in front of us. We will always be able to see him by looking inward.

Dale Coverstone died of cancer on July 12, 2003. He left his wife and three children, Michael Coverstone of Medford, Ore., Susan Mooney of Beaverton, Ore., and John Coverstone of Shoreview, Minn.

A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, July 19, at 1 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Port Townsend, Wash.

DELMORE (DEL) LESLIE HUGGINS

May 26, 1915 -- July 11, 2003

Born on May 26, 1915, in Grants Pass, Ore., to May Evans and Theron Huggins. Del passed away on July 11, 2003, as a result of a tractor accident. He was 88 years old.

As a young boy, he lived with his parents on a wheat farm in Alberta, Canada. Later, while attending grade school, he lived on a chicken farm in Clearlake, Wash. He graduated from high school in Sedro-Wooley, Wash.

He married Muriel Coward on Nov. 2, 1935. They had a son, Jerold Delmore, who preceded Del's death, and a daughter, Judith Huggins Hall, who resides in Forks.

There were nine grandchildren, one of whom preceded him in death, and 15 great-grandchildren.

The Huggins family moved to Forks in September 1941. Del worked as a logger for various logging companies.

In 1948, Del and Muriel purchased a five-and-dime store, where Muriel had been employed as a store clerk. Del continued work in the woods for a few more years while Muriel took care of the store.

Their store now houses a Mexican mercantile in the Odd Fellows building.

A vacant lot was later purchased at the corner of Highway 101 and East Division Street. The building was built by Del. The five-and-dime was moved into the building during the summer of 1954, and the U.S. Post Office occupied part of the rear of it. The new business sold shoes, clothing, toys, housewares and hardware. It is now known as The Huggins Building and is occupied by Chinook Pharmacy.

Christmas was a very special time for Del and Muriel, as well as much of the town. Every year, Santa was flown into the Forks airport, and he was escorted by one of the Forks Fire Department trucks to the Forks Department and Variety Store.

Every year, Del greeted Santa at the store entrance, and escorted him into the store, where dozens and dozens of children were waiting to sit on Santa's lap.

Both Del and Muriel worked hard every day to make their new business a success, and successful it was.

In 1958, Del built a new home on East Division, where they had earlier purchased several acres of farmland. The farm was named Mur-Del Acres after the two of them.

In the mid 1960s, property was purchased on Spartan Avenue, and Del began the construction of another building. The U.S. Post Office was moved into the new structure, from the back of the Huggins Building, where it remains today.

Del was a self-taught carpenter, and everything he built was built to last.

Del loved to fish and hunt, and he went on several safaris out of the country. He was a pilot who owned his own plane, and he was a commercial fisherman for several years.

On Jan. 1, 1974, Del and Muriel, after selling their store business, retired to the farm, where Del continued doing the things he loved most. These things were farming and raising cattle, hunting and fishing, and enjoying time with his grandchildren.

He was a teacher, scholar, father and friend to all of his family, and all who knew him respected him.

At Del's request, there was cremation.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, July 19, at 1 p.m. in the Congregational Church Fellowship Hall in Forks.

Arrangements entrusted to Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles, Wash.
