Robert A. McDowell
April 27, 1935 -- July 5, 2003
Sequim resident Robert A. McDowell died of cancer. He was 68.
The son of Vernon L. and Lillian (Williams) McDowell, he was born in LaGrange, Ga..
He served in the Navy in 1955-58.
Mr. McDowell married Clare Mae Kibbie in San Jose, Calif., on Sept. 27, 1957.
He was retired from IBM in San Jose, and moved to Sequim in 1999.
Mr. McDowell worked for Pennco Transportation in Carlsborg until the time of his death.
Mr. McDowell was a member of Eastern Hills Community Church in Carlsborg.
In addition to his wife, survivors include sons Dan McDowell of Snohomish and Pat McDowell of Arlington; brothers Harold McDowell of Griffin, Ga., Richard McDowell of Stuart, Fla., and Donald McDowell of West Chester, Pa.; and sister Caroline Joyce Gilmore of Tennessee.
Services: Private service for family and friends. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Esther Shideler
July 3, 1906 -- July 3, 2003
Former Port Angeles resident Ruth Shideler died in Des Moines on her 97th birthday.
One of 11 children of Charles and Jesse (Caubel) Paynter, she was born in the Cherokee Strip region of Oklahoma Territory, and graduated from Blackwell (Okla.) Senior High School.
She received a teaching certificate from Northern Oklahoma Teachers College in Alva, and taught in rural Oklahoma schools before starting her own family.
She married Harlend B. Shideler, also of Blackwell, in Howard, Kan.
The Shidelers moved to Wichita, Kan., in 1940, then to Port Angeles in 1947.
Although widowed in 1954, she remained in Port Angeles, affiliated with Olympic Day Nursery and Peninsula Family Crisis Council, until 1962 when she accepted a position with Kamahameha Schools of Honolulu for 12 years.
Mrs. Shideler, who retired to Seattle to be near family, especially enjoyed children.
She is survived by sons Richard Shideler of Ferndale and James Shideler of Spokane; brother Frank Paynter of Port Angeles; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by sons Harlend B. Shideler II, William K. Shideler and Robert G. Shideler.
Services: Saturday, July 12, at 3 p.m., memorial in First Presbyterian Church, 139 W. Eighth St., Port Angeles. Bleitz Funeral Home, Seattle, is in charge of arrangements.
Edward `Steven' Kirkman
Aug. 6, 1944 -- July 1, 2003
Port Angeles resident Edward ``Steven'' Kirkman died at age 58 in Valley Medical Center, Renton, 15 days after being diagnosed with cancer.
He was born in Elizabeth City, N.C., to Edward Malcolm and Lillian (Jones) Kirkman.
Mr. Kirkman was a member of the Coast Guard from 1962 to 1966. His duty included Port Angeles and Spain.
He married Anita Pauline Losey in Port Angeles on Dec. 30, 1966.
The Kirkmans moved to Seattle, where he spent 24 years with United Parcel Service and driving a semi-truck out of Tacoma.
Taking early retirement in 1999, the Kirkmans sold their home and bought an RV in which they traveled for three years, visiting family throughout the country and summering in Port Angeles.
He enjoyed woodworking and 3-D photography.
Mr. Kirkman was a member of Teamsters and Elks.
Survivors include his wife of Port Angeles; daughter and son-in-law Nikki and Steve Bowman of Port Angeles; daughter and son-in-law Monica and Shawn Haman of Orting; sister Patricia Lee of Sophia, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
Services: Saturday, July 12, at 3 p.m., Celebration of Life barbecue at Kitsap Memorial State Park overlooking Hood Canal, 220 Park St., Poulsbo. Cady Cremation Services, Kent, was in charge of arrangements.

Verna E. Bergland
Jan. 27, 1910 -- July 3, 2003
Port Angeles resident Verna E. Bergland died at age 93.
She was born in Tamperi, Finland, to Sam and Aurora Tanner, and came to the United States at about the age of 18 months.
After first living in Cleveland, she moved to Seattle, where she graduated from West Seattle High School.
She married Paul Bergland on Aug. 16, 1929.
The Berglands lived in Seattle until they moved to Colfax in 1944, and she became district manager for the Tuberculosis Association.
The Berglands then spent 10 years in Sacramento, Calif., where she was a Gray Lady hospital volunteer and developed an interest in antiques.
They moved to Port Angeles in 1975, and Mrs. Bergland owned and operated an antique shop.
Mrs. Bergland enjoyed the beach, music and poetry.
She is survived by daughter Shirley Tulin of Colfax; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, son LeRoy and daughter Audrey.
Services: Monday, July 14, at 2:30 p.m., funeral in Bruning Funeral Home, N. 109 Mill St., Colfax, with Pastor Bob Ingalls officiating. Private committal in Colfax Cemetery.

Frances Louise Moore
Feb. 4, 1918 -- July 3, 2003
Sequim resident Frances Louise Moore died in Port Angeles of cardiac arrest. She was 85.
She was born in Center Village, Ohio, to George E. and Blanche (Ross) Dawson.
She is survived by son and daughter-in-law William G. and Connie Fleak of Florida.
Services: Services will be held in Florida. Olympic Cremation Association, Port Angeles, is in charge.
GERALDINE L. FITCHARD
Geraldine (Gerry) L. Fitchard, longtime Port Angeles resident, died May 15, 2003, in Seattle at the age of 88.
She was born on May 13, 1915, to George and Harriet Wallis in Port Angeles.
She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Douglas and Anja Wallis of Hawaii; sister-in-law Adelia Wallis of Port Angeles; and a daughter and son-in-law, Cecile and David Adam of Austin, Texas.
Her two granddaughters, Annie Ervin and Laura Ervin, and great-grandson, Chance Love, all live in Texas.
Gerry's husband, Cecil R. Fitchard, father of their daughter, Cecile, died in 1983.
In 1987, Gerry married George V. Pickens of Seattle. The entire family also mourns his death on May 2, 2003.
A family memorial graveside service for Gerry will take place Saturday, July 12, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Mount Angeles Memorial Park in Port Angeles. Family and friends will celebrate the lives of Gerry, Cecil and George at the home of Adelia Wallis following the brief service.

The family wishes to thank the owners and staff of Gardenview Ridgemont Adult Care Home in Seattle for their loving care of Gerry the last year-and-a-half of her life.
Doreen Mary Bulliman
Aug. 10, 1927 -- June 27, 2003
Sequim resident Doreen Mary Bulliman died in Port Angeles of heart failure. She was 75.
She was born in Manchester, England, to Thomas and Mildred (Miles) Glaiser.
During World War II, she was an assembly line worker in Lancashire, England.
She married Eric Milner Bulliman in Withington, England, on Aug. 25, 1951,
Mrs. Bulliman was a mime for three seasons in productions that included ``Cinderella'' and ``Puss-in-Boots.''
She was a member of Church of England and Shelton Women of Moose.
Survivors include her husband; sons and daughters-in-law Raymond Howard and Roxanne Bulliman of Lynnwood, David Stanley and Terri Bulliman of Issaquah and Eric A. and Catherine Bulliman of Port Townsend; and six grandchildren.
Services: None. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles, is in charge.
