Samuel `Everett' Richmond
Oct. 26, 1929 -- June 28, 2003
Forks resident Samuel ``Everett" Richmond died at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle following a massive stroke. He was 73.
Mr. Richmond was born in Olney, Mont., to Lyle and Pearl (Greene) Richmond.
He married Emily Elizabeth Brown in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, on Oct. 4, 1969.
An Army veteran, he studied radiological technology at Oregon Institute of Technology.
Mr. Richmond was an X-ray technician in Montana, Oregon, Eastern Washington and Forks.
He enjoyed photography, playing pinochle and darts, and woodworking.
Mr. Richmond was a member of the Forks Elks Lodge.
Survivors include his wife of Forks; daughters Janis Anderson of Scottsdale, Ariz., Cindy Richmond of White Plains, N.Y., and Heidi Richmond of Forks; brothers Wayne Richmond of Kalispell, Mont., and Randall Richmond of Eureka, Mont.; sister Ruth Burchum of Kalispell; and four grandchildren.
Services: Wednesday, June 2, 1 p.m., memorial, followed by potluck at Forks Elk Lodge, 941 Merchant Road, Forks. Forest Lawn Cemetery of Seattle is in charge of arrangements.

Harvey Ward Smith
Oct. 21, 1910 -- June 28, 2003
Harvey Ward Smith died at home in Port Townsend.
He was born in Tacoma to Peter and Helen (Stafford) Smith.

William John Tanski Jr.
June 14, 1930 -- June 28, 2003
Port Angeles resident William John Tanski Jr. died of respiratory failure at age 73.
He was born in East Brookfield, Mass., to William John Tanski Sr. and Ida (Hoyt) Tanski.
A member of the Air Force from 1947 to 1974, he was a master sergeant and Pararescue Survival School instructor. He served in the Korean War and was stationed at air force bases in Nevada, Florida, Washington state, Philippines and Japan.
He married Keiko Otomo in Sapporo, Japan, on Nov. 1, 1957.
After retirement from the Air Force, he worked for the U.S. Forest Service from 1976 to 1995, coming to Port Angeles for the final years of his career.
Mr. Tanski enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife of Port Angeles; sons John Tanski of Los Alamos, N.M., Richard Tanski of Las Vegas, Nev., and Edward Tanski of Port Angeles; sister Carolin; and one grandchild.
He was preceded in death by brother David and sister Elisabeth.
Services: Tuesday, July 1, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., visitation at Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, 105 W. Fourth St., Port Angeles. Funeral Wednesday, July 2, 11 a.m., at Harper-Ridgeview. The Rev. Kurt Nagel will officiate.

Jessica D. Daniels
Sept. 16, 1920 -- June 27, 2003
Sequim resident Jessica D. Daniels died of aortic stenosis at the age of 82.
She was born in Scotland and received a nursing degree from Oxford University. During World War II, she served as a second lieutenant nurse with the British Royal Army.
She married Wilbur Daniels on April 7, 1966, in Lordsburg, N.M. After working as a secretary at the University of Arizona Law School, she moved to Sequim with husband 27 years ago.
Her husband, Wilbur, is her only survivor. She was preceded in death by a son, Christopher H. Warner.

Katherine P. Schlaffman
March 25, 1952 -- July 1, 2003
Katherine P. Schlaffman of Port Angeles died at Olympic Medical Center at the age of 51.
The eldest of 13 children, she was born to David Frederick and Patsy Ann (Fayette) Howell in Chandler, Ariz.
She was a 1970 graduate of Port Angeles High School.
On Nov. 25, 1977, she married Eric Schlaffman.
Mrs. Schlaffman was a bartender in Kodiak, Alaska, and a retail clerk for Albertsons in Port Angeles. She belonged to the Retail Clerks Union.
She enjoyed sewing, fishing, the outdoors and her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband; sons Steven Phillip Schlaffman and Thomas Paul Schlaffman; and daughter Elizabeth Ann Schlaffman, all of Port Angeles; parents and grandmother Clara K. Howell, all of Sequim; brothers Joseph and Jim Howell, both of Denver, and Mike Howell of Port Angeles; sisters Therese Agesson of Sacramento, Calif., Laura Rushton of Sequim, and Ann Dryke, Margaret Warren, Patti Polwell, Paula Howell, Barbara Anders and Julie Boyd, all of Port Angeles; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brother David Howell.
Services: Thursday, July 3, 11 a.m. memorial followed by reception at Queen of Angels Catholic Church, 11th and Oak streets, Port Angeles. The Rev. Reynaldo Yu will officiate. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
Harvey Ward Smith
Oct. 21, 1910 -- June 28, 2003
Harvey Ward Smith died from heart failure in his Port Townsend home at the age of 92.
He was born to Peter and Helen (Stafford) Smith in Tacoma, where he had to drop out of school in the ninth grade due to his father's illness.
His main professions were upholstery and ice cream making. He coined the phrase, ``Old upholsterers never die, they just keep recovering."
On June 6, 1944, he married Mabel Hayes. She died on July 18, 1971.
He later married Phanoy Crisler Engles. She died in July 2002.
Mr. Smith lived on Vashon Island from 1944 to 1991, when he moved to Tacoma, then to Port Townsend on Nov. 26, 1999.
He enjoyed painting in watercolors and drawing with charcoal.
Survivors include sons Bruce Smith of Port Townsend and Harvey Norman Smith of Anchorage, Alaska; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert, and sister, Mary Helen.
Services: No services. Kosec Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be on Vashon Island.

Harold N. `Tommy' Thompson
Dec. 15, 1917 -- July 1, 2003
Sequim resident Harold N. ``Tommy" Thompson died in Tacoma of pneumonia at the age of 85.
He was born in Scott, Ohio, to Harley and Nell (Cussen) Thompson.
He married Mary J. Mathot on March 4, 1966, in Anchorage, Alaska.
Mr. Thompson was a captain and jet pilot with the Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1947, serving in the Asian theater and in the European theater, where he was a prisoner of war.
He worked as a builder in Anchorage and in Sequim.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; sons Robert Thompson of San Bernardino, Calif., John Thompson of Anchorage and Derek Miller of Athens, Ga.; daughter Pamela Cooper of Palos Verdes, Calif.; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services: None. Arrangements were by Personal Alternative in Tacoma.
Reba L. Tjemsland
July 6, 1920 -- June 29, 2003
Reba L. Tjemsland died of chronic renal failure at her Sequim home. She was 82.
Born in Naverne, Kan., to Roscoe and Myrl (Strole) Reed, she lived most of her life in Kansas and California.
On Nov. 10, 1945, she married Thomas Tjemsland in Long Beach, Calif. He preceded her in death on March 15, 1997.
She moved with her husband to Sequim in 1986.
Survivors include son Kent Tjemsland of Nevada; daughter Myrlene Tjemsland of Sequim; brothers Eldon Reed of Kansas and Lowell Reed of California; sister Darlene Sexton of Kansas; and two grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by son Keith Tjemsland and brother Wayne Reed.
Services: There will be a memorial service later. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Nadene `Tiger' Giard
Aug. 2, 1918 -- June 30, 2003
Nadene ``Tiger" Giard, formerly of Gardiner, died in Olympia at age 84.
Mrs. Giard was born in Pasco to Alfred and Clara Palmer. She married Ken Giard, who died in 1978, on April 24, 1936, in Eugene, Ore.
The Giards retired to Gardiner in 1972.
In 1978, Mrs. Giard moved to Olympia to live with her son Gene.
Survivors include sons Bart and Gene Giard, both of Olympia; daughter Jill Giard of Winnemucca, Nev.; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by son Ted Nielson and daughter Gail Brainard.
Services: Celebration of Life at 3 p.m. Monday, July 7, at Gardiner Community Church. Burial in Gardiner Cemetery. Reception at Gardiner Community Center. Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Donald L. `Teach' Graham

H. RUTH CAYS WESTMORELAND
July 7, 1905-July 4, 2003
Ruth Westmoreland, 97, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, died Friday, July 4, 2003, in Port Angeles, Wash.
She was born July 7, 1905, in Hoquiam, Wash., to Charles B. and Margaret A. (Tucker) Russell. Losing her mother as a baby, she lived with relatives in Oklahoma until 1918 when her father brought her to Washington, then to Port Angeles in 1923. There, she worked at J.C. Penney's until her marriage on Oct. 16, 1925, to Morris E. Cays.
She and her husband built a house in 1928-29 on the Hospital Reserve on Caroline Street, and moved the house to its present site at Caroline and Race streets in 1949. She lived in Port Angeles for 80 years, and in this house for 74 years.
Morris Cays died June 5, 1957, in Olympia, Wash., and she later married Merle F. Westmoreland on Sept. 13, 1965, in Emmett, Idaho. Mr. Westmoreland died May 1, 1999.
Ruth worked for a number of years at Miller's (later Riedel's) department store, at Tradewell, and retired from Penney's.
Her first interest was always her family, and she remained closely involved with them all her life. She was accomplished in needlework and crafts, and was noted for her beautiful Christmas tree ornaments, given to many friends and family members.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Bernie Russell, in 1927, and two grandchildren. She leaves a daughter, Sidney Cays of Port Angeles; grandchildren Michele Reynolds and husband Jeff, Jeff Scott and wife Jennifer, and Julie Thompson and husband Kevin, all of Port Angeles. There are five great-grandchildren.
At her request, there will be no services. There will be cremation.

Edward `Steven' Kirkman
Aug. 6, 1944 -- July 1, 2003
Port Angeles resident Edward ``Steven" Kirkman died at age 58 in Valley Medical Center, Renton, 15 days after being diagnosed with cancer.
He was born in Elizabeth City, N.C., to Edward Malcolm and Lillian (Jones) Kirkman.
Mr. Kirkman was a member of the Coast Guard from 1962 to 1966. His duty included Port Angeles and Spain.
He married Anita Pauline Losey in Port Angeles on Dec. 30, 1966.
The Kirkmans moved to Seattle, where he spent 24 years with United Parcel Service and driving a semi-truck out of Tacoma.
Taking early retirement in 1999, the Kirkmans sold their home and bought an RV in which they traveled for three years, visiting family throughout the country and summering in Port Angeles.
He enjoyed woodworking and 3-D photography.
Mr. Kirkman was a member of Teamsters and Elks.
Survivors include his wife of Port Angeles; daughter and son-in-law Nikki and Steve Bowman of Port Angeles; daughter and son-in-law Monica and Shawn Haman of Orting; sister Patricia Lee of Sophia, N.C.; and three grandchildren.
Services: Saturday, July 12, at 3 p.m., Celebration of Life barbecue at Kitsap Memorial State Park overlooking Hood Canal, 220 Park St., Poulsbo. Cady Cremation Services, Kent, was in charge of arrangements.
