Mary Bolman Hartman
Jan. 28, 1913 -- June 10, 2003
Mary Bolman Hartman, 90, died in Port Townsend from complications of cancer.
The daughter of William J. and Louise Elizabeth (Yaden) Bolman was born in Salt Lake City. She moved with her family to Yakima at age 3.
She married Ira Dean Hartman in Yakima on June 30, 1937.
She graduated from Washington State Normal School (now Central Washington College) with a teaching certificate in 1936. In the next 26 years, she taught in Seattle, Benton City, Richland and Salem, Ore.
She came to Port Townsend in 2002 and was a resident of Laurel Gardens Adult Family Home.
Mrs. Hartman was a member of the Washington Education and National Education associations, active in Eastern Star at Benton City, auxiliary volunteer at Kadlec Medical Center in Richland and Contact Checkline.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Port Townsend, and enjoyed painting in oils.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, retired Coast Guard Capt. Jeffrey Dean and Sylvia Hartman of Port Townsend and retired Navy Master Chief Lance Scott and Marie Hartman of Bremerton; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Her husband of 49 years died Oct. 24, 1986. She was also preceded in death by grandson Michael David Hartman.
Services: Saturday, June 28, 11 a.m., memorial, with Wendell Aakeny officiating, in Trinity United Methodist Church, 609 Taylor St., Port Townsend. Graveside service Sunday, June 29, 2 p.m., in Evergreen Cemetery, Benton City. Each service will be followed by a reception. Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge of arrangements.

Millard Orr
June 5, 1931 -- June 8, 2003
Millard Orr died of lung cancer in his Port Angeles home at age 72.
He was born in Rising Star, Texas, to Noah and Juanita (Davis) Orr.
He was a Navy veteran and received a master's degree in the humanities from the University of San Francisco.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Mr. Orr owned and operated Grebins store on Front Street in Port Angeles.
He was an artist best known for stained-glass lamps, handcrafted hanging baskets and landscaping.
Mr. Orr is survived by his mother, Juanita Davis.
Services: July 10, 6 p.m., Celebration of Life at the Grattan family home, 173 Lake Farm Road, Port Angeles, after which a dinner buffet will be served.

Brian E. Dunn, Janey Bernice Pettygrove
Brian E. Dunn
June 24, 1946 -- June 8, 2003
Brian E. Dunn, a resident of Bainbridge Island and Quilcene, died in Quilcene at age 56.
He was born in Princeton, Ind., to Eugene and Edythe (Hall) Wall, and grew up in southern Illinois.
He served in the Navy in 1965-69.
He married Nena McLin in Albion, Ill., on July 10, 1966.
Mr. Dunn came to Bainbridge Island in 1982, after which he bought a second home in Quilcene.
He was sole proprietor of Quilcreek Design (originally Island Wordsmith), and worked with environmental groups and Association of Bainbridge Communities.
Mr. Dunn's enjoyment of nature especially included birding and mushrooming. He also enjoyed studying the Civil War and the Lewis and Clark expedition, and appreciated poetry.
Mr. Dunn is survived by his wife; mother Edythe Justice of Ballard; brother Errol W. Wall of Phoenix; and sister Jania Elliott of Naples, Fla.

Janey Bernice Pettygrove
Dec. 7, 1917 -- June 1, 2003
Longtime Peninsula resident Janey Bernice Pettygrove died at Clairemont East Assisted Living, Bremerton, at age 85.
She was born in Oakville to Charles Ernest and Bessie E. (Dessy) Newsted, but grew up at Discovery Bay, where she played basketball on the high school girls' team.
She married Benjamin ``Ben'' Pettygrove in Gardiner on Jan. 7, 1935.
After the Pettygroves moved to Port Angeles in 1947, she was employed in shipping and receiving at Peoples Department Store, and as a presser for Olympic Laundry.
With a group of friends, the couple moved to Jackson Cove at Brinnon in 1979.
The Pettygroves were constant companions who shared a calendar of annual rituals that included dancing in the new year; 56 years of opening trout season at Lake Leland; digging razor clams at Kalaloch on Memorial Day; clamming, shrimping and crabbing in June at Jackson Cove in Brinnon; berry picking and making the season's first wild berry pie in June and July; and 26 years of celebrating Thanksgiving and Christmas in Yuma, Ariz., where they stayed from October through March.
In addition to doing league bowling, Mrs. Pettygrove was a member of Eastern Star and of the Presbyterian Church.
Health-care needs required the couple to move to Bremerton in 2001.
Mrs. Pettygrove is survived by son and daughter-in-law Ron and Carole Pettygrove of Bremerton; brother Bob Newsted of Las Vegas; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Her husband died Oct. 21, 2002. She was also preceded in death by brothers Ernest, Charles and William Newsted, and sister Polly Nichols.

Johnny (Gerard) Grange
Oct. 2, 1922 -- June 10, 2003
Johnny (Gerard) Grange died in Port Townsend at age 80.
Mr. Grange was born to Charles Clayton and Rosemary (Mulloy) Grange in Vancouver, British Columbia.
He was raised in North Dakota and moved to Kirkland in the 1930s.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and later worked as a cook and caterer.
Mr. Grange turned ``drifting'' into an art form until he met country singer Paul Stoffel. Johnny's lyrics combined with Paul's smooth southern voice and flowing melodies. As a songwriter he had six country-western albums.
He was a member of the Catholic Church.

Frederick H. Schmidt

Frederick H. ``Fred'' Schmidt died at home in Port Angeles at age 85.
He was born in Detroit.

Edward Joseph Solleder
Sept. 9, 1917 -- June 13, 2003
Longtime Port Angeles resident Edward Joseph Solleder died at age 85.
Born in Shanagolden, Wis., to Joseph and Anna (Zimmerman) Solleder, he grew up in Wisconsin, then moved to Michigan before coming to Port Angeles in 1948.
He married Elva Lenore Bruch in Butternut, Wis., on June 15, 1940.
Mr. Solleder worked as a farmer and heavy equipment operator as well as in construction and logging.
He was a member of International Union of Operating Engineers, Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and the Eagles.
Mr. Solleder was an avid fisherman who also enjoyed camping at the beach and hunting.
He is survived by his wife; son Allan ``Pat'' Solleder of Escondido, Calif.; daughter Sharon Bilow of Phoenix; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by sisters Bertha Einichner, Rose Kempf and Tracy Kemp.
Services: Monday, June 16, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., visitation at Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, 260 Monroe Road, Port Angeles, immediately preceding 1 p.m. graveside service in Mount Angeles Memorial Park, Monroe Road and U.S. Highway 101. The Rev. Reynaldo Yu will officiate.

Victor Carl Urban
Jan. 15, 1928 -- June 12, 2003
Sequim resident Victor Carl Urban died of Hodgkin's lymphoma at age 75.
He was born at City Island, Bronx, N.Y., to Ladislaus Wilhelm Joseph Rudolf and Bertha Julia (Ulmer) Baron de Urban.
He served in the Air Force in 1946-49 as a weather observer, and attained the rank of staff sergeant.
He earned his bachelor's degree from Whitworth College, and master's degrees in divinity and business administration.
Mr. Urban worked as a minister, care giver and administrator for the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
He was a member of Federal Prison Retirees, Sequim Presbyterian Church and Sequim Sunrise Rotary Club.
He married Muriel Faith Seely at Spokane on Aug. 29, 1951.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Urban's survivors include son David Scott Urban of Aurora, Colo.; daughter Sheralee U. Sohn of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sister Katherine Jewell of Plainview, N.Y.; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters.

Darleen R. Young
Dec. 16, 1925 -- June 12, 2003
Darleen R. Young died in her Sequim home at age 77.
She was born in Sioux Falls, S.D., to Donald and Lucille (Sherman) Brown.
She married James Denis Brown in Southern California on Feb. 2, 1949.
On June 14, 1970, she married Robert Leeson Young. Mr. Young died April 20, 1999.
Mrs. Young lived in Southern California until 1972, when she and her husband moved to Albuquerque, N.M.
They then moved to Seattle and, in October 1996, to Sequim.
She was a 25-year member of the National Ski Patrol, and an active member of TOPS.
Mrs. Young enjoyed sewing and crafts.
Survivors include son Thomas Brown of Buena Park, Calif.; stepdaughter Michael Markovits of Pensacola, Fla.; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services: Private memorial will be at a later time. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge.

John Daniel Christle
Nov. 16, 1976 -- June 13, 2003
Port Townsend resident John Daniel Christle died from injuries received in a vehicle collision on state Highway 20 in Burlington. He was 26.
Born in Alta, Iowa, to Edward Dale and Susanna Beatrice (Bailey) Christle, he moved to Yelm in 1989, then returned to Alta in 1991 before coming to Port Townsend.
He graduated from Port Townsend High School with honors.
Mr. Christle married Janet Marie White on May 30, 1997.
He was a security guard for Port Townsend Paper and an attendant at Hilltop Texaco for about two years. For the past six years, he commuted to Burlington, where he did auto body repair.
His favorite pastimes included off-road riding, fixing cars and other items and shopping.
Mr. Christle is survived by his wife and mother, both of Port Townsend; father of Alta, Iowa; brothers Kevin Dale Christle of Marysville, Jim Tyler Christle of Bellevue and Brian Edward Christle of Ames, Iowa; sister Susan Marie Kenney of Emettsburg, Iowa; and grandmother Anna Mary Schick of San Jacinto, Calif.
Services: Saturday, June 21, at noon, Celebration of Life in St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church parish hall, 1335 Blaine St., Port Townsend. The family asks that participants bring memories to share Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge of arrangements.
