James W. Machenheimer

May 18, 1913 -- May 25, 2003

Lifelong Port Angeles resident James W. Machenheimer died of pancreatic cancer at age 90.

The son of John Wesley and Claudia (Dunlap) Machenheimer, he served on active duty in the Navy during World War II.

He later worked at Angeles Creamery and at the Crown Zellerbach paper mill.

Mr. Machenheimer was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Clallam County Historical Society, Elks Naval Lodge, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He enjoyed gardening.

He married Stella Robertson on June 16, 1955. She died March 13, 1998.

Mr. Machenheimer is survived by two nieces.

Services: Tuesday, June 3, at 11 a.m., funeral in Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, 260 Monroe Road, Port Angeles. The Rev. Charles Mays will officiate. Graveside service, including military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars, will follow in Ocean View Cemetery, 3127 W. 18th St., Port Angeles.

Memorials: Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1024, Third and Francis streets, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Effie M. Schroeder

May 31, 1908 -- May 29, 2003

Port Angeles resident Effie M. Schroeder died two days before her 95th birthday.

The daughter of Janet Bennett was born in Newcastle, England. Her formal education extended through the third grade.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Art Schroeder.

Mrs. Schroeder was employed as a telephone operator for the city of Los Angeles and was owner/operator of a hotel in Reno, Nev.

She is survived by a niece and nephew.

Services: Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Reno, Nev. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles, is in charge.

Doris Jean Sharp

Aug. 23, 1924 -- May 27, 2003

Doris Jean Sharp died in Sequim at age 78.

She was born in Detroit to Elmer and Lunetty (Lewis) Salsburg.

She received her degree from Borgess Hospital School of Nursing in Kalamazoo, Mich.

She lived in Paradise, Calif., before moving to Washington.

Mrs. Sharp enjoyed observing scenery and wildlife, and was an avid reader.

She is survived by daughter Melanie S. Orenda of Kalamazoo, Mich.; daughters and sons-in-law Debra L. Sharp and Jon Hoover of Sequim and Denise D. Christopher-Hall and Randy of Paw Paw, Mich.; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by son Kevin Burgess Sharp.

Services: None. Olympic Cremation Association, Port Angeles, is in charge.

Memorials: Dungeness Valley Habitat for Humanity, P.O. 1957, Sequim, WA 98382.

Inez Glover

Dec. 18, 1911 -- May 30, 2003

Longtime Peninsula resident Inez Glover died of natural causes in Olympic Medical Center, Port Angeles, at age 91.

She was born in Boulder, Mont., to Thomas Marshall and Helen Bessie (Young) Ingling.

In 1933, she graduated from Washington State College.

She married Arthur E. Glover in Seattle in 1939. He died in 1984.

Mrs. Glover, who worked as a secretary and a homemaker, lived in Alaska and Oregon before moving to Port Angeles in 1962. She recently moved to Sequim.

She was active in many bridge clubs

Mrs. Glover is survived by four nieces and one nephew.

Services: None. Burial in Mount Angeles Memorial Park is under direction of Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles.

Memorials: Hospice of Clallam County, P.O. Box 2014, Port Angeles, WA 98362; or charity of choice.

Freeland E. McLeod

Aug. 8, 1927 -- May 30, 2003

Freeland E. McLeod died of heart failure in his Port Angeles home at age 75.

He was born in Granite, Okla., to Ralph and Ruby E. (Weese) McLeod.

He married Dollie May Henning in Klamath Falls, Ore., on Nov. 13, 1948.

Mr. McLeod retired from Franz Bakery in Portland, Ore., and moved to Port Angeles in 1974, where he and his wife purchased Loomis Tavern on U.S. 101 east of town.

The McLeods operated the tavern and adjacent trailer park for 20 years before selling the business in 1994.

Survivors include his wife; daughter Pamela Rae Rushton of Port Angeles; son Robert Dale McLeod of Portland, Ore.; brother Dale McLeod of Fallbrook, Calif.; sister Mary Kidwell of Lancaster, Calif.; five granddaughters; and one great-grandson.

Services: None. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge.

Louise `Fife' Akers

July 17, 1930 -- June 3, 2003

Louise ``Fife'' Akers died of breast cancer in Port Townsend. She was 72.

Born in Wenatchee to William Keith and Martha Luella (Curtis) Fife, she was raised in Cashmere, where she graduated high school.

She married Jack Akers in Wenatchee on Feb. 11, 1949.

In Seattle, she worked in security for the Boeing Co. After moving back to Wenatchee, she was a church secretary.

A strong supporter of unions, she also was secretary for International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the Plumbers and Pipefitters locals.

Mrs. Akers was raised as a Methodist and belonged to the Independent Order of Foresters.

After retiring in 1991, she traveled in her recreational vehicle. Other pastimes included square dancing and doing crochet and embroidery.

Mrs. Akers is survived by her husband; sons Michael Akers of Houston and Gordon Akers of Tacoma; daughter Cindy Hupp of Everett; sister Jean Wilson of Wenatchee; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Services: Memorial to be held later in Wenatchee. Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge of arrangements.

Joan Long Dixon

Dec. 8, 1937 -- May 27, 2003

Lifelong Port Angeles resident Joan Long Dixon died in Harborview Medical Center, Seattle, from a cerebral aneurysm. She was 65.

She was the daughter of Charles Purcell and Juanda Aurilla (McDaniel) Long.

She attended primary school in Joyce and graduated from Port Angeles High School in 1955.

She also lived in Eden Valley and Sequim.

Her marriage to Arthur Cook Dixon on June 30, 1955, ended in a 1973 divorce.

She married Roy Franklin Curtis on Oct. 10, 1980.

Mrs. Dixon worked for Port Angeles Creamery, KAPY radio, Safeway, G&B Shake, Sequim Electric and Olympic Memorial Hospital, as well as writing a column for the Sequim Press newspaper.

She was a member of Mountain View Rebekah Lodge and of the diaconate of First Baptist Church.

She also held memberships in Dry Creek Grange and United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local No. 381.

In addition to writing, reading, and working with ceramics, Mrs. Dixon liked to follow genealogy, sew, garden, cook and decorate cakes.

Survivors include husband Roy Curtis, son John Dixon and son and daughter-in-law Jeff and Barb Dixon, all of Port Angeles; son and daughter-in-law Jim and Karol Dixon of Forks; stepson and stepdaughter-in-law Scott and Barb Curtis of Penticton, British Columbia; stepbrother Ron Knox of Winston-Salem, N.C.; sister Patti Long and sister and brother-in-law Kathy and Cliff Prince, all of Port Angeles; stepsister and stepbrother-in-law Robin and Kevin Tice of Olympia; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by stepson Les Curtis and grandson James A. Dixon Jr.

Services: Saturday, June 7, at 2 p.m., memorial in First Baptist Church, Sixth and Laurel streets, Port Angeles. The Rev. George Boudet will officiate. A reception at the church will follow the service. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Jane Simpson

June 30, 1928 -- June 1, 2003

Mary Jane Simpson died of lung cancer in her Port Angeles home. She was 74.

She was born in Lakewood, N.J., to Richard Rodney and Margaret Dirby (Buckley) Dennett.

She married Port Angeles resident Robert Williams Simpson in Manhattan Beach, Calif., on Dec. 21, 1946.

When the Simpsons returned to Port Angeles, she returned to school and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1950.

Mrs. Simpson, who belonged to the Port Angeles Senior Center, also enjoyed dressing and repairing dolls as a member of the Wee Wonder Miniature Club. She played with the Pinochle Club on Saturday nights at The Terrace.

Survivors include sons Robert W. Simpson Jr. of Lyle and John E. and Phillip F. Simpson, both of Port Angeles; daughters Joi Lea of San Leandro, Calif., Teena M. Williams of Puyallup and Jeena R. Jelle and Sandra J. Mills, both of Port Angeles; sister Margaret Ann Mains; 23 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Services: None. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles, is in charge of cremation. Interment at Mount Angeles, Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road.

Ronald Edward Thomas

July 20, 1940 -- May 1, 2003

A memorial service will be held Sunday for Sequim resident Ronald Edward Thomas, 62, who died in Brea, Calif., of a heart attack.

He was born in Kansas City, Mo., to Merle and Patricia (Moulder) Thomas.

He married Cathy Eaton in Federal Way on April 23, 1983.

Mr. Thomas was a tow truck operator in Westminster, Calif., before a rare form of multiple sclerosis forced him into retirement.

Mr. Thomas held memberships in the Sequim Lodge of F&AM, Olympic Peninsula Shrine Club and Oly-Pen Scottish Rite Club, and served as a Rainbow Dad for Sequim Rainbow Assembly.

Survivors include his wife of Sequim; daughter Dani Thomas of Sequim; sons John of West Seattle and Glen of Snohomish County; son and daughter-in-law Ron and Diana Thomas of Bothell; and sister and brother-in-law Diane and Jim Mueller of La Habra Heights, Calif.

Services: Sunday, June 8 at 1 p.m., memorial in Sequim Masonic Temple, 700 S. Fifth Ave., Sequim. A reception will follow the service. Memory Gardens, Brea, Calif., was in charge of arrangements.

Edwin Walden

Feb. 19, 1914 -- May 31, 2003

Port Angeles resident Edwin Walden died of pneumonia at age 89.

He was born in Canford, British Columbia, to August and Lena (Lovick) Walden.

He grew up in Vancouver, Wash., where he graduated from Union High School.

He worked as a plasterer in Seattle before retiring to Port Angeles five years ago.

Mr. Walden was a member of the Laborers International Union and enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include brother Clarence Walden of Woodland, Calif., and sisters Bessie Holsman and Margaret Anderson, both of Vancouver, Wash.

Services: Will be held later. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Diane Ruth Breidenbach

Sept. 26, 1951 -- June 2, 2003

Longtime Forks resident, Diane Ruth Breidenbach died in Harborview Medical Center, Seattle, at age 51.

She was born in Anchorage, Alaska, to William and Joan (Bennett) Patrick.

She graduated from Rubidoux High School in Riverside, Calif., in 1969.

She lived in California before moving to Washington, and residing in Forks in 1971.

She married Michael D. Breidenbach in Quinault in 1979.

In addition to being a homemaker, Mrs. Breidenbach was a waitress at the Vagabond and Pay & Save, and manager of the True-Value hardware store.

She was a community volunteer at the senior center and food and clothing banks.

Survivors include her husband of Forks; sons Tyler and Jesse of Forks; mother Joan Seifer of Yreka, Calif.; father William Patrick of Yreka; sisters Susan Duble, Martha Patrick and Carlean Folsom; and brothers Steven Patrick, Monty Patrick and Mike Patrick.

Services: At her request, none. First Call Plus, Seattle, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: Olympic Community Action Agency, 651 E. Division St. (P.O. Box 1742), Forks, WA 98331; or charity of choice.
