Phillip Roy Rodrigues
Nov. 26, 1935 -- May 22, 2003
Sequim resident Phillip Roy Rodrigues died in Port Angeles of cancer. He was 67.
He was born in Lemoore, Calif., to Manuel G. and Cora Belle (Lokey) Rodrigues.
Chief Warrant Officer Rodrigues was a 21-year Army veteran with service from 1955 to 1976 -- including duty in Germany and Vietnam, where he was attached to an anti-aircraft battery as a meteorologist. In California, he was a radar instructor.
After his service with the military, Mr. Rodrigues was a systems analyst with the Boeing Co. in Kent.
His favorite pastime was golf, which he enjoyed both playing and watching. He also enjoyed spectator sports such as football, baseball and basketball.
Mr. Rodrigues' first marriage, to Gisela Zimmer, ended with divorce. She preceded him in death in 1998.
He married Martha Jean ``Jeannie" Munsey, on June 15, 1991.
Survivors include his wife; son David Manuel Rodrigues of Marietta, Ga.; brothers William Rodrigues of Fresno, Calif., Richard Rodrigues of Cool, Calif.; and Chuck Orindo of Foresthills, Calif.; sister Susan Laxton of Fresno, Calif.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services: Today, May 28, at 1 p.m., memorial in Sequim Presbyterian Church, 950 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim. The Rev. Ralph Kieneker will officiate. Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge.

Grace Mae Charnell
May 13, 1909 -- May 15, 2003
Former Port Angeles journalist and patron of the arts Grace Mae Charnell died in Shoreline at age 94.
She was born to Lewis Abraham and Jesse Estelle (Slye) Roberts in Seattle, where she graduated from the Cornish College of the Arts at the University of Washington.
She was a commercial artist from 1931 to 1933 with Frederick and Nelson in Seattle.
She married Henry Victor Charnell Jr. in Seattle on Oct. 14, 1933. The Charnells moved to Port Angeles from Shelton.
While in Port Angeles, Mrs. Charnell helped found the Reading Club in 1938, Town and Gown Dance Club in 1943, Community Concerts in 1948 and Community Players in 1953.
She was a reporter and photographer with Port Angeles Evening News, predecessor to Peninsula Daily News, from 1950 to 1974.
She enjoyed painting, playing the piano and traveling.
In addition to her husband of almost 70 years, survivors include son and daughter-in-law Henry Victor and Jan Charnell III, son Malin David Charnell, daughter Karen Leslie Charnell, eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by son Robert Lewis Charnell, brother Lowell James Roberts, and sisters Phyllis Jeanette Congdon and Kathryn Louise Nack.

Joan Long Dixon

Lifelong Port Angeles resident Joan Long Dixon died in Seattle at age 65.
Beverly Coldren
Aug. 1, 1929 -- May 19, 2003
Former Port Angeles resident Beverly Coldren died in Bellingham of leukemia. She was 73.
Born in Minot, N.D., to Sigurd B. and Bertha I. (Rasmussen) Snydal, she graduated from high school in Williston, N.D., then went to business college.
She married Roy Coldren in 1951 in Tacoma.
The Coldrens located in Port Angeles in 1957.
Both were employed at Peninsula Bottling Co. After his death in 1973, she remained with the company as office manager until her retirement in 1991.
Mrs. Coldren then moved to Bellingham, where she is survived by her daughter, Catherine Coldren.
Other survivors include brothers Richard Snydal of Bakersfield, Calif.; Laurence Snydal of San Jose, Calif.; and Arthur Snydal of Port Angeles; and sisters Arlene Backen, Shirley Thorness and Joy Rockstad, all of North Dakota.
She was preceded in death by sister Patricia Vusick.

Louis Arthur Stevenson
July 4, 1911 -- May 27, 2003
Sequim resident Louis Arthur Stevenson died of pneumonia at age 91.
He was born in Upland, Calif., to Arthur L. and Amy Citoyenne (Clarke) Stevenson.
During World War II, Mr. Stevenson, a member of the Naval Reserve, served in America, Asia and the Pacific doing ship repair as a machinist's mate. At discharge, he was a petty officer first class
He was a graduate of the California Institute of Technology, and was an engineer for United Control and Boeing, from which he retired.
Mr. Stevenson was a member of Clallam County Amateur Radio Club. He also enjoyed woodcarving and gardening.
He is survived by one niece, one nephew and his three children.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1991 and by brother Donald F. Stevenson.

Pamala Kay Sutherland

Pamala Kay Sutherland died of cancer in her Port Angeles home at age 52.
Born to Eugene Arthur and Edna (Huston) Foy in Eugene, Ore., she was raised by her mother and stepfather, Donald T. Fuller.
She grew up in Tillamook, Ore., and lived in Raymond, Astoria, Ore., and Portland, Ore. She moved to Port Angeles in 1987.
Mrs. Sutherland worked in the restaurant industry.
She married Gerald Lee Johnson in Astoria, Ore., on June 5, 1972.
Later, she married Raymond Sutherland in Port Angeles on April 5, 1991.
Mrs. Sutherland enjoyed oil painting, cooking, singing, creative decorating and gardening. She belonged to Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Port Angeles.
Survivors include her husband; sons Brian A. Johnson, Aaron D. Johnson, Todd Waugaman and Ronald Sorenson; daughter Sabrina E. Sorenson; mother Edna Fuller; sister Barbara G. Carpenter; and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father and stepfather.
Services: Monday, June 2, at 11 a.m., memorial in Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, 260 Monroe Road, Port Angeles. The Rev. Kurt Nagle will officiate. A reception will follow at the Sutherland residence, 231 Prawn Drive, Port Angeles.

Earl L. Swanberg
Sept. 9, 1929 -- May 22, 2003
Former Port Angeles resident Earl L. Swanberg of Everett died of Cancer in the Veterans Administration hospital, Seattle. He was 73.
He was born in Scobey, Mont., to Earl Leo and Esther (Johnson) Swanberg.
He married Fae Wasankari in Port Angeles on July 13, 1956.
Mr. Swanberg served in the Army during the Korean War.
He studied accounting and was a real estate broker in various parts of the state, including Port Angeles.
He was active at Roosevelt School in Port Angeles and with the Shriners. He belonged to the Masonic Lodge and enjoyed square dancing.
Survivors include his wife; sons Jeffery Swanberg with the Air Force in Georgia and Roy Swanberg in Port Angeles; daughter Julie Swanberg-Baxter of Everett; brother Leroy Swanberg and sister Mary Payne, both of Port Angeles; and five grandchildren.
Services: Today, May 30, at 1 p.m., reception in the Nile Temple, 6601 244th St. SW, Mountlake Terrace. Inurnment, with the Rev. Harvey Bagley officiating, was in Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent. Columbian Funeral Home, Seattle, is in charge of arrangements.

Garnett Joseph Watters
Oct. 26, 1919 -- May 27, 2003
Sequim resident Garnett Joseph Watters died at age 83.
He was born in Young, Saskatchewan, to Garnett E. and Florence (Fleener) Watters.
He married Doris Barton in Seattle on Oct. 19, 1946.
Mr. Watters helped make B-52 bombers with the Boeing Co. for seven years, then worked at 3M as a sales supervisor for 38 years before retiring in 1979 and moving to Sequim.
He was a private pilot and a volunteer fireman for Diamond Point, serving as department chief for much of his 15 years of service.
Mr. Watters, who was a 17-year member of Rhododendron Grange. also belonged to St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Elks Club and Civil Air Patrol.
Survivors include his wife; sons Don of Jacksonville, N.C., and Larry of Waldorf, Md.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by son Rick.
Services: Tuesday, June 3, at 1 p.m., memorial in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim. The Rev. Robert Rhoads will officiate. Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Irene Cecelia Wylam
Dec. 27, 1910 -- May 29, 2003
Irene Cecelia- Wylam died of heart failure in her Port Angeles home. She was 92.
Born on a farm near Minto, N.D., to Frank and Elizabeth (Malone) Fee, she attended high school in Minto and St. Michael's School of Nursing in Grand Forks, N.D.
She worked briefly as a nurse in Minnesota before moving to Hoquiam, where she also was a nurse.
She married Leonard Wylam in Hoquiam on Oct. 22, 1938.
The Wylams moved to Port Angeles in 1955, and she worked at Olympic Memorial Hospital until her retirement in 1975.
Mrs. Wylam was a member of Peninsula Golf Club and Queen of Angels Catholic Church, and volunteered at the Port Angeles Senior Center.
She enjoyed weekly bridge games, meeting with other retired nurses and family gatherings.
Mrs. Wylam is survived by daughter and son-in-law Patricia and Kenneth Morgan of Port Angeles; and sisters Madeline Schanilec, Geraldine Forester and Patricia Jensen, all of North Dakota.
She was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1991, as well as five brothers and two sisters.
Services: Monday, June 2 at 7 p.m., rosary will be recited in Queen of Angels Catholic Church, 209 W. 11th St., Port Angeles; Tuesday, June 3, at 11 a.m., memorial Mass will be celebrated in the church by the Rev. Kurt Nagel and followed by a reception in the church's Fireside Room. Private inurnment will be in Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road, Port Angeles. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Albert John Amell
Jan. 2, 1918 -- May 28, 2003
Albert John Amell of Port Townsend died at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle at age 85.
Mr. Amell was born to Mabel Girard in Chippewa, Minn.
He married Pauline P. Hirshberg in Minneapolis on June 3, 1939.
Mr. Amell moved to California in 1948. He retired from Sears, Roebuck and Co. in 1970 and moved to Port Townsend, where he purchased and operated Olympic Hardware on Water Street.
He enjoyed being out on the water and his dogs. He was known for his ability fix and repair anything.
Mr. Amell was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge.
Survivors include his wife of Port Townsend; sons Dale F. Amell of Canyon Country, Calif. and Michael D. Amell of Pittsburg, Calif.; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by son James A. Amell.
Services: Memorial Celebration at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 7, at the Port Townsend Odd Fellows Lodge, 1118 Lawrence St. Inurnment will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Concord, Calif.
