Glenda Phillis

March 10, 1947 -- March 15, 2003

Glenda Phillis died after lengthy illness in her Irondale home at age 56.

She was born in Hailey, Idaho, to Aaron and Ida (Sayer) McWillis.

She married Cline Edward Phillis in Swansonville on Jan. 2, 1965.

For many years, Mrs. Phillis owned and operated His 'n' Her Hair Style, an occupation she greatly enjoyed.

In addition to spending time with her family, her pastimes included home-shopping and camping.

Mrs. Phillis is survived by her husband and father, both of Irondale; son and daughter-in-law Aaron and Angie Phillis of Elma; and one grandson.

She was preceded in death by her mother, sister Carolyn and brother Laverne.

Services: Friday, March 21, at 1 p.m., graveside service in Greenwood Cemetery on state Highway 19, with the Rev. Doug MacLamour officiating. Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: Tri-Area Community Center, 10 W. Valley Road, Chimacum, WA 98325. Please, no flowers.

Dwight Baker Fowler Jr.

Aug. 8, 1952 -- March 6, 2003

Former Port Angeles resident Dwight Baker Fowler Jr., 50, died in his sister's home in Mill Valley, Calif., after a long illness.

He was born in San Mateo, Calif., to Dwight B. and Donna (Taggart) Fowler Sr.

He enlisted in the Army following high school. From July 1970 to March 1972, he served with the 1099th Transportation Co. ``River Rats" in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam.

After the Army, Mr. Fowler became a journeyman carpenter in the Carpenter's Union.

During his 20-year residency in Port Angeles, Mr. Fowler was a foreman for Primo Construction Co. He worked on numerous projects, including Clallam Bay Corrections Center, PB's Corner and the Vern Burton Center. He was also active in local housing construction.

He enjoyed hiking and camping with his daughters in the Olympic Mountains and also enjoyed flying stunt kites.

Survivors include daughters Crystal Council of Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina and Sheralyn McCormick of Tacoma; the mother of his daughters, Karen McCormick of Port Angeles; brother Dale Fowler of Longview; sister Dede Sabbag of Mill Valley, Calif., Donde Robb of Walnut Creek, Calif., and Diann Fowler of Sonora, Calif.; and his father.

His mother died in 2002.

Services: Memorial was held. Daphne Fernwood Mortuary, Mill Valley, Calif., was in charge of cremation.

Memorials: Hospice of choice.

Bette L. Hurning

April 16, 1921--March 17, 2003

Port Angeles resident Bette L. Hurning died at age 81.

She was born in Seattle to William and Nora (Salyer) Baskett.

She owned and operated several restaurants in Anchorage, Alaska, and Port Angeles.

Her first marriage was to Everett Herrington, who died in October 1970.

She married Gordon Hurning in April 1974. He died Aug. 8, 1992.

Mrs. Hurning's survivors include nieces and nephews Sam Bugge and Kathy Bugge Beck, both of Port Angeles; Judy Snodgrass of Bremerton; and Gary and Karen Bruno of Tacoma.

Services: None. Olympic Cremation Association is in charge.

Albert Larry `Al Monroe' Nearhoff

Oct. 27, 1944 -- March 17, 2003

Albert Larry Nearhoff, Forks Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 2001, died in Forks Community Hospital at age 58.

Mr. Nearhoff was known on the air as Al Monroe on the Forks radio stations he owns, KVAC-AM 1490 and KLLM-FM 103.9.

He was born in Bremerton to Bill and Ruth (Case) Nearhoff.

His family owned a tugboat business in Port Orchard.

Mr. Nearhoff was a radio personality in Everett before coming to Forks in 1996.

He was a member of the Forks Chamber of Commerce, of which he served two terms on the board of directors.

He belonged to the Forks Elks Lodge and was a major supporter of the annual Quillayute Valley Scholarship Auction, the latest of which was held last weekend.

He married Marcia McGhie in Forks on April 19, 1998.

Survivors include his wife; son Arthur Nearhoff of Everett; sons and daughters-in-law Louis and Michelle Brenner of Bonney Lake and Richard and Beth Brenner of Lake Stevens; daughters and sons-in-law Danista and James Hale of Seattle and Shannon and Brian Benthin of Kent; mother and brother Bill Nearhoff of Port Orchard; brother and sister-in-law Walt and June Nearhoff of Port Orchard; and four grandchildren.

Services: Sunday, March 23, at 2 p.m., memorial service in Assembly of God Church, 81 Huckleberry Lane, Forks. Pastor George Williams of Forks Bible Church will officiate. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: Quillayute Valley Scholarship Foundation, P.O. Box 763, Forks WA 98331, or at the Forks branch of the Bank of America.

Wilma M. Wilks

June 28, 1922--March 17, 2003

Wilma M. Wilks of Port Hadlock died at age 80.

She was born in Albany, Ore., to John Zebed and Ruth (Gilmore) Larson.

Her early years were spent in Albany, Jefferson and Turner, Ore., before she moved to Salem for her senior year of high school.

She married Wilfred ``Wil" Wilks in Salem on Sept. 1, 1941,.

They lived in Los Angeles, Salem and Canby, Ore., before moving to Kirkland in 1958. After retirement, they moved to Port Hadlock.

The Wilkses are charter members of Calvary Chapel of Port Townsend.

Mrs. Wilks is survived by her husband; sons William A. and Mark E. of Port Hadlock; son Paul W. of Redmond; daughter Sharon R. Kisinger of Orting; brother Norman Larson; sisters Genevive Peterson of Bonny Lake and Hazel L. Boyer of Mountlake Terrace; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services: Sunday, March 23, at 2 p.m., memorial service, followed by a reception, in Calvary Chapel, 13474 Airport Cutoff Road, Port Townsend. The Rev. James Rosenquist will officiate. Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge of arrangements. There was cremation.

Charles William Crary

Oct. 1, 1923 -- March 21, 2003

Charles William Crary died at his Carlsborg home at age 79.

Mr. Crary was born in Los Angeles to Charles Walker and Rose Phyllis (Dowland) Crary.

He married Hester Ann Akes in Yakima on Aug. 10, 1947.

Mr. Crary served in the U.S. Army from 1940 to 1945 during World War II in the Pacific Theater, and received the Purple Heart.

He received a bachelor of arts in anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1950, and a master's in education and administration from San Jose State College in 1965. He studied pre-veterinary medicine at Washington State University.

Mr. Crary taught in Salem, Ore., and Monterey, Calif., then served as an assistant principal and principal in Monterey until 1978.

Upon retiring to Carlsborg, he was able to pursue his first choice of careers by working at the Blue Mountain Animal Clinic and Olympic Game Farm. He was one of the first on the Peninsula to rehabilitate injured birds.

He did extensive genealogical research beginning with his Scottish heritage.

Mr. Crary was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, leader of Boy Scouts and 4-H, and a member of California Teachers Association.

Survivors include his wife of Carlsborg; daughters Susan Marie Allen of Silverdale and Carolyn Ann Flint of Carlsborg; daughter and son-in-law Phyllis and Mark Stockand; brothers Phillip Crary of Portland, Ore., and Don Crary of San Diego; sister Helen Quale of Corvallis, Ore.; six grandchildren; and three grandchildren.

He also leaves behind two adopted families, the Pangelinans and the Tudelas, of Saipan.

He was preceded in death by son Clyde Warren Crary.

Services: None. A Disabled American Veterans memorial service will be held later. A family Celebration of Life gathering will be held in early April with the Rev. Don Crary officiating. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edna Ellis

Dec. 15,1923 -- March 15, 2003

Port Townsend resident Edna Ellis died at age 79.

She was born in Hindley Green, England, where she married Harold Ellis.

Mrs. Ellis was a nurse's aide for 17 years at Jefferson General Hospital and especially enjoyed working with newborns.

Her favorite pastimes included being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and gardening.

Mrs. Ellis was a 35-year member of Eagles and 52-year member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Survivors include son Harold Ellis of Port Hadlock; daughters Hannah Rene Hanes and Maureen McKenney, both of Port Townsend; brother Daniel Aldred and sister Maggie Smith, both of England; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by brothers William and Tom and sisters Nellie and Gladys.

Services: Tuesday, March 25, at 3 p.m., Celebration of Life in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1020 Jefferson St. The Rev. Gail M. Helgeson will officiate. Inurnment will be in Laurel Grove Cemetery, after which a reception will follow at St. Paul's parish hall.

Memorials: St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1020 Jefferson St., Port Townsend, WA 98368; or children's hospital of choice.

Astrid Fredriksen

Oct. 14, 1907 -- March 19, 2003

Astrid Fredriksen died in Port Angeles at age 96.

She was born in Lillsand, Norway, to Frank and Johanna (Nielsen) Fredriksen.

During 84 years in Port Angeles, she was a real estate agent as well as a member of the Port Angeles Board of Realtors, Sons of Norway and Clallam Art League.

Miss Fredriksen enjoyed painting and gardening.

She is survived by sisters Helene Jagger and Marian Downing, both of Port Angeles, and Agnes McCorrol of Louisiana.

Services: At her request, none. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles, is in charge.

Willie K. Knoepfle Sr.

Oct. 16, 1919 -- March 11, 2003

Longtime Port Hadlock resident Willie Kenneth Knoepfle Sr. died of pneumonia in the Veterans Home at Retsil. He was 83.

Born in Upham, N.D., to John and Sofia (Klain) Knoepfle, he left school during the Depression to join the Civilian Conservation Corps as a teenager.

He later graduated from barber school in Seattle.

On Feb. 3, 1941, he entered active duty with the Army. He spent the majority of World War II in the Aleutian Islands.

He was honorably discharged on July 14, 1945, and received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign medal and American Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star.

He had careers as a barber, automobile mechanic, farmer and heavy-duty diesel mechanic before retiring from civil service in July 1974.

Mr. Knoepfle and other veterans at Retsil received high school diplomas from South Kitsap High School on Nov. 11, 2002, in honor of their service during World War II.

He enjoyed the outdoors, especially camping and hunting.

His July 5, 1945, marriage to Ruth LaNelle Wall ended in divorce.

He married Norine Twiggs Keogan in Port Hadlock on Nov. 24, 1973.

Mr. Knoepfle is survived by his wife and stepchildren Ken Merritt, Don Merritt and Karl Keogan, all of Port Hadlock; son Willie Kenneth Knoepfle Jr. of Discovery Bay; daughters Winnie Greenaway of Sequim and Kaye Clark and Susan Bianchi, both of Olympia; stepdaughter Deana Osmer of Chimacum; brother Herbert Knoepfle of Minot, N.D.; stepbrothers Harvey Green and Stanley Green, both of California; sisters Frieda Molina of San Diego and Minnie Brimhall of Whitefish, Mont.; 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by brother Emil Knoepfle; sisters Agnes Pace and Verna Knoepfle; and stepdaughter Kathy Weitz.

Services: Memorial was held March 15 in Sequim Presbyterian Church. Cremation was under direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home, Bremerton.

Gerald Ernest Mahlum

Dec. 14, 1928 -- March 18, 2003

Sequim resident Gerald Ernest Mahlum died of cancer at age 74.

The oldest son of nine children was born in Newark Township, Wis., to Gustive Adoulf and Orpha Tolina (Hanson) Mahlum.

He married Rachel Anne Schoville in Wisconsin in 1956.

He served with the Army in Germany as a private first class from 1956 to 1957.

Mr. Mahlum moved to Sequim in 1970 and was a millwright with Merrill and Ring for more than 20 years. He retired in 1993.

Mr. Mahlum was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He enjoyed the outdoors, farming and gardening.

In addition to his wife, survivors include sons Jerry Wayne and Steve Mahlum, both of Wisconsin, and Chuck Mahlum of Tacoma and Brian Mahlum of Kirkland; daughters Sheila Grunwaldt of Sequim and Sheryl Lynn Mahlum of Wisconsin; three brothers and three sisters, all of Wisconsin; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: None. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.
