Fred W. Dutton
July 12, 1925 -- Jan. 7, 2003
Port Hadlock resident Fred W. Dutton died of a ruptured aneurysm at age 77.
He was born in Bay Village, Ohio, to Fred W. and Marie (Brennan) Dutton.
Mr. Dutton was trained as a bomber pilot the Army Air Corps during World War II.
He was married to Patricia Heim from 1946 to 1955.
Then in 1955 he married Lisbeth Ann Overstreet in Sandusky Bay, Ohio. She preceded him in death.
Mr. Dutton studied art at the Cleveland Institute of Art and The Cooper School, both in Ohio. He was in painting and printmaking for more than 30 years.
Mr. Dutton was a pilot, seaman, working journalist and photographer, boat builder, jazz musician, graphics designer and art director. He lately concentrated on land and seascape painting.
His sports interests included skiing, mountain climbing, sailing and golf.
Survivors include sons Michael Scott Dutton and Loren Edward Dutton, both of Seattle; daughters Shelley Berry of Port Townsend, Lisanne Dutton of Seattle and Lynne C. Hatter of Auburn; and three grandchildren.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by sister Susan King.

Lelia Mary Olson
Feb. 29, 1944 -- Jan. 14, 2003
Sequim resident Lelia Mary Olson died at Providence Hospital, Seattle, after battling several illnesses. She was 58.
She was born to Nelson W. and Selma Darwina (Bromm) Cook in Puyallup, where she grew up and attended school. She also attended school in Winthrop.
She married Donald Horras in 1961, and they lived in Sigourney, Iowa, and Baudette, Minn.
She married Carl A. Olson in Watertown, S.D., on Aug. 4, 1974. They lived in Minnesota until 2000, when they moved to Sequim.
Survivors include her husband in Sequim; son and daughter-in-law Duane and Tracy Horras of Roseau, Minn.; son Jerome Olson and fiancee Kristi Robison of Richfield, Minn.; daughter DeEtt Madoll of Talladega, Ala.; foster daughter Jenny Hufnagle of Duluth, Minn.; sisters and brothers-in-law Zella and James Dow of Sequim and Theresa and Lennis Torregano of Ollala; sisters Margie Freehart of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and Georgette Cook of Puyallup; and six grandchildren.
Mrs. Olson was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother and an infant son, Charles Andrew Olson.

Lawrence `Larry' Schneider
Dec. 6, 1916 -- Jan. 19, 2003
Port Angeles resident Lawrence ``Larry" Schneider, died at age 86.
He was born in Nebraska to Shellie and Hannah (Nelson) Schneider.
He graduated from North Platte High School in Nebraska.
Mr. Schneider was married to Maxine Anderson in Bremerton, who died in 1969. He was also married to Doris Freeman, who died in 1976, and he was preceded in death by longtime companion Virginia Pease in 2001.
Mr. Schneider moved to Washington to drive a taxi. He later started his own logging company in Bremerton. In 1960 he bought a dairy farm in Sequim.
He joined the Teamsters Union in the 1970s and drove trucks for Del Hur Construction in Port Angeles until retiring.
Mr. Schneider enjoyed playing poker at the Eagles Club, and owned horses that raced at Long Acres in Seattle.
He belonged to the Eagles, Elks and Moose lodges, all in Port Angeles.
Survivors include sons Richard and Gary Schneider, both of Sequim; daughters Diane Seamands of Sequim and Jeanine Reeder of Port Angeles; brothers Hap Schneider of Nebraska and Loyd Schneider of Sequim; sister Lyona Willis of Independence, Mo.; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brothers Ernest, Albert and Elmer Schneider.
Services: Thursday, Jan. 23, 2 p.m. graveside service at Sequim View Cemetery, 1505 Sequim-Dungeness Way. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home of Port Angeles is in charge of arrangements.

LORRAINE RYAN
Lori Ryan, age 58, a longtime resident of Port Townsend, Washington, died at home on January 15th, 2003, after a long and hard-fought struggle with breast cancer.
She was born on February 8th, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan, to Walter and Adel Pronyk.
Lori graduated from Wayne State University with a degree in education. She then taught in Detroit and in San Diego, where she met Joe Ryan, who she married in 1968.
Lori then taught in the Panama Canal Zone and in Eugene, Oregon, where she earned her master's degree and was head of the counseling program at Sheldon High School.
A love of sailing and the beauty of the Olympic Peninsula first brought the couple to Brinnon, where they lived on their sailboat, Makai.
They then moved to Port Townsend, where they began work on building their dream house. Lori began working as a vocation rehabilitation counselor and started her own company, which eventually included offices in Port Townsend, Bremerton and Port Angeles.
During this time she was also instrumental in encouraging Peninsula College to start an office and computer skills learning lab in Port Townsend. Lori continued her teaching career at the lab, focusing on providing highly individualized strategies for each of her students.
In addition to work and sailing, her many other interests included a love of jazz, and Portuguese Water Dogs, but above all the well-being of her friends and family. Lori's genius certainly included her energy, courage and intelligence, but was best shown in her kindness and willingness to love other people. She will be sorely missed by those who knew her.
She is survived by her husband, Joe Ryan, of Port Townsend; her mother, Adel Pronyk, of Holland, Michigan; sister Marlene Ritchie of Hamilton, Michigan; brother-in-law Larry Ritchie; nephews Norm and Jeff; and their families.
She was preceded in death by her father, Walter.
A celebration of Lori's life will be held at Fort Worden State Park beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 22nd. All who knew her are invited.

William `Bill' Cook
July 19, 1940 -- Jan. 16, 2003
Clallam Bay resident William ``Bill" Cook died of pancreatic cancer at age 62.
He was born in Seattle to Paul and Lenore V. (Smith) Cook.
He married Patricia A. Turner in Port Angeles on Dec. 20, 1975.
The Cooks, who have lived in Clallam Bay for 15 years, owned and operated P.B.'s MiniMart in Clallam Bay.
Mr. Cook's favorite pastimes included fishing, camping and football.
Survivors include his wife; sons Joseph Cook of The Dalles, Ore., Michael Cook of Vancouver, Wash., and Anthony Cook; daughters Anna Margaret Coburn and Shelly Raymer, both of Port Angeles, and Dorinda L. Kelly of Sultan; sister Sandra Lidral; 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Grover C. `Chuck' Maiden Jr.
Aug. 19, 1919 -- Jan. 20, 2003
Grover C. ``Chuck" Maiden Jr. of Quilcene died in Crestwood Convalescent Center, Port Angeles, of peritonitis. He was 83.
He was born in Ayrshire, Iowa, to Grover Cleveland and Myrtle Irene (Dannewitz) Maiden Sr., and graduated from Buena Vista College, Storm Lake, Iowa in 1939.
During World War II, Mr. Maiden was a naval aviator in the Pacific Theater, attaining the rank of lieutenant commander.
From 1947 to 1958, he was a teacher at Bremerton High School. From 1958 to 1974, he taught at Olympic College.
In 1952, he was the first field corps teacher of the Student Conservation Corps in Olympic National Park.
Mr. Maiden earned a master's degree in counseling from Western Washington University in 1961.
He moved to Port Townsend in 1970 and Quilcene in 1991.
Mr. Maiden enjoyed the outdoors, mainly camping and mountain climbing. He scaled all the major peaks in Washington state.
He, was active with ski schools, Special Olympics, 4-H, Boy Scouts of America, and the Boys & Girls Club. In 1992, he was honored with a Clallam County Community Service Award
He was a member of the Olympic Peninsula Retired Naval Aviator Squadron, Port Townsend United Methodist Church and Sequim Kiwanis.
He married Virginia Latta in Seattle on June 18, 1955. She died in June 1991.
Mr. Maiden's survivors include son John of Quilcene; daughters Debbie Wahlborg of Seattle and Mari Anne Maiden of Phoenix; brother Hank Maiden of Sequim; sisters Amelia Ingalls of Poulsbo, Valera Minear of Manchester and Rose Bolstad of Bremerton; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brother Elmer Maiden.

Josephine D. Serpa Moraga
Oct. 14, 1911 -- Jan. 18, 2003
Port Angeles resident Josephine D. Moraga died at age 91.
She was born in Hanford, Calif., to Frank and Anna (Lawrence) Serpa.
She married Delfred Moraga in August 1948.
The Moragas made their home in San Jose, Calif., until his death Jan. 24, 1997, and her relocation to Clallam County in 1999.
Mrs. Moraga was a lifelong homemaker who enjoyed cooking and was active in the Catholic Church.
She was a member of Queen of Angels, SPRSI (a Portuguese fraternal organization) and Native Daughters of the Golden West.
She is survived by daughter and son-in-law Mardell and Carlos Xavier of Port Angeles; sister Olivia ``Ollie" Evangelho of Hanford, Calif.; one grandson, two step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandson.
Besides her husband she was preceded in death by 14 brothers and sisters.
Services: Tonight, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m., the Rosary will be recited in Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, 260 Monroe Road, Port Angeles; Thursday, Jan. 23 at 10 a.m., the Funeral Mass at Queen of Angels Catholic Church, 209 W. 11th St., Port Angeles, with the Rev. Reynaldo Yu celebrating. Burial will be in Ocean View Cemetery, 3127 W. 18th St., Port Angeles.

Joy A. Schwab
May 23, 1927 -- Jan. 18, 2003
Port Angeles resident Joy A. Schwab died at age 75 of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and emphysema.
She was born in Everett to Elmer D. and Beulah B. (Reid) Thompson.
At age 15, she left home to work in Puget Sound Naval Shipyard at Bremerton.
She married Clarence Fredrick ``Fritz" Schwab in Bremerton on May 15, 1948.
Mrs. Schwab accompanied her husband during his Navy career, which included Guam, Illinois, Newport, R.I., San Diego, San Francisco and Wilmington, Calif., before he retired in 1968.
After her husband's death March 27, 1983, she came to Port Angeles, where she was a Chore Girl in 1983-88. She was also a waitress or cook at area restaurants.
She enjoyed summer Music on the Pier concerts and Bible study at Hillcrest Baptist Church; and participated in activities of the Senior Center, Circle of Friends (formerly affiliated with Grandmother's Club), sharing potluck dinners with friends and playing the dice game Zilch.
She is survived by daughter Sandra J. Brunsmann of Torrance, Calif.; sisters Beulah B. Koch of Everett; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were sisters Marilyn J. Cope, Bonnie J. Girdler, Patsy R. Thompson and Betty L. Thompson.
Services: Saturday, Jan. 25, 10 a.m., visitation at Evergreen Funeral Home and Cemetery, 4504 Broadway, Everett, followed by 11 a.m. graveside service. Then on Monday, Jan. 27, at 1 p.m., a memorial -- with reception following -- will be held at St. Andrew's Assisted Living, 520 E. Park Ave., Port Angeles, with the Revs. Ed McKay and Jayne Gott officiating.

Helen Miller Wickertsheimer
May 11, 1908 -- Jan. 17, 2003
Sequim resident Helen Miller Wickertsheimer died at age 94. She had dementia.
Born in Teglingen, Germany, to Herman Heinrick and Anna Helena (Tiek) Miller, the family came to New York City in 1912, then traveled by train to Seattle.
A year later, they moved to Winesap where Helen and her older brother rode horseback to a one-room schoolhouse.
In 1920, she became a U.S. citizen and moved to a farm in the Okanogan Valley.
In 1926 she married Paul Wickertsheimer in Tonasket. He preceded her in death.
She was a seamstress as well as skilled at crocheting and other arts and crafts.
After her second marriage to Ernest Neff, in 1943, she lived in various parts of the state. At the time of his death, she returned to using her former name.
In 1982, Mrs. Wickertsheimer moved to Sequim, where she was a member of St. Joseph's Altar Society, Rebekahs and Garden Club. During the past several years, she lived at Sherwood Assisted Living and Olympic Care and Rehabilitation Center.
She is survived by son Darwin Wickertsheimer and daughter June Nelson, both of Sequim; and sisters Margaret Davis and Mary Hightchew, both of Seattle.
