Darren James Biddle
Nov. 15, 1962 -- Nov. 4, 2002
Port Angeles resident Darren James Biddle died as a result of drowning in Lake Sutherland at age 39.
His body was recovered from the lake Wednesday following an extensive search that lasted more than two months. Positive identification was made Friday following an autopsy.
Mr. Biddle was born in Downey, Calif., to Tony Visco and Keani Kruger.
He served in the Army and was honorably discharged Aug. 11, 1980.
Mr. Biddle moved to Sequim from Wyoming in 2002, and to Lake Sutherland shortly before his death.
He was a devout Christian and musician who composed New Age music.
He loved birds and nature, and was particularly fond of his Eclectus parrot, Telly. Mr. Biddle died trying to save the bird when it fell into the lake.
Survivors include companion Gina Garman of Port Angeles; mother of Brea, Calif.; father of California; and brother Eric Biddle and sister Tiffany Wilson, both of Mission Viejo, Calif.
Services: There will be a memorial service in California. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Marie Meister
Nov. 23, 1912 -- Jan. 10, 2003
Marie Meister died in Port Orchard at age 90.
Mrs. Meister was born to Louis and Rose (Enos) Minish in Port Townsend. She married Peter George Meister on Sept. 23, 1930, also in Port Townsend.
Mrs. Meister lived her life in Port Townsend until moving to Port Orchard Care Center in 1995. She had worked at several retail and service jobs and was a homemaker who was devoted to her family.
Mrs. Meister was involved in St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church and St. John's Hospital Auxiliary.
Survivors include son Peter J. Meister and his wife, Jackie, of Port Townsend; daughter Merrilynn Snell of Tacoma and Dorrie Berna of Rochester; brother Jim Minish of Port Townsend; and eight grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brothers Bernard, Robert, Alfred, Robert, Erving, Lawrence, Raymond and John Minish, sister Jeanette Emerson; and daughter Arlene Hall. Her husband died Nov. 21, 1990.
Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14 service at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church with burial following at St. Mary's Cemetery.
Mary Ellen Mueller
Jan. 25, 1913 -- Jan. 9, 2003
Mary Ellen Mueller of Sequim died of cerebro vascular causes in Linden Grove Care Center in Puyallup at age 89.
Mrs. Mueller was born in Lansford, N.D., to Frank A. and Sarah Agnes (Davis) Crisman. She married Gilbert Mueller on Nov. 9, 1936, in Maple Lake, Minn.
She was a waitress on Bainbridge Island for 15 years. The Muellers moved to Sequim in 1984 and spent winters in Arizona.
Mrs. Mueller enjoyed cooking, needlework, gardening and bridge.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and Diamond Point Ladies.
Survivors include her husband of Sequim; daughter and son-in-law Jeannette and John Bruil of Puyallup; daughter Joyce Andrae of Port Orchard; sister Agnes Guimond of Minnesota; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brothers Millard and Neiman Crisman, and sisters Beatrice Roles and Imogine McCrory.
Services: Noon Wednesday, Jan. 15, funeral liturgy at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas W. Beattie presiding. Reception will follow at St. Joseph's Church Hall. Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
MARJORIE LENORE CLAPSHAW
1913-2003
Services for Marjorie L. Clapshaw (nee Pryor), 89, of Port Angeles will be at noon Thursday at the Drennan-Ford Chapel. Mrs. Clapshaw died Saturday, January 11, at home.
Mrs. Clapshaw was born March 15, 1913, in Mount Vernon, Washington, to Frank and Genevieve Bouchard-Hanson Pryor. She married Clifford Calyton Clapshaw on November 14,1933, in Tacoma.
Marjorie lived in Port Angeles for the last 62 years and worked as one of the first telephone operators in this area. She also worked for many years at several of the local retail stores.
Everyone who ever met Marjorie loved her. It is impossible for anyone to name a single person who did not like her. She was tolerant of all people regardless of race, nationality or religion. She loved music, ice skating and dancing.
Survivors include her two sons, Patric A. of Duvall and Michael C. of Port Angeles; sisters Ruth Bettie, Betty Cooper, Viola Griffith and Virginia Lusky; brothers George and Lloyd Durham; grandsons Lane E., Daniel M. and Sean M. Clapshaw; great-grandsons Solomon Patric and Francesco Alberto Clapshaw.
Her husband, Clifford, and seven of her nine brothers preceded her in death.

John J. `Jack' Connell
Nov. 10, 1923 -- Dec. 30, 2002
John J. ``Jack" Connell of Port Townsend died of cancer at age 79.
He was born in San Francisco to Robert E. and Lillian (Derby) Connell.
Mr. Connell attended San Mateo (Calif.) Junior College until entering the Navy on Dec. 12, 1942. He served in the South Pacific as a carpenter's mate second class and was discharged in 1946.
Mr. Connell was a minor league pitcher in the Pacific Coast League -- his teams included the Oakland Oaks and Albuquerque Dukes -- for several years.
He later was a sheet-metal worker, retiring in 1985.
Mr. Connell married Phyllis M. Thulen in Carson City, Nev., on Sept. 23, 1960. She died in 1983.
He moved to Port Townsend in 2002 to be near his daughter.
He was an avid golfer -- he scored two holes-in-one -- and a member of the Oldtimers Baseball League and the Native Sons of San Francisco.
Survivors include his daughter, Sally Radon of Port Ludlow; a brother, Dave Connell of Lafayette, Calif.; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Bob, and a sister, Marilyn.
Services: Jan. 6 in San Francisco, with burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma, Calif. Duggan's Funeral Parlor, San Francisco, was in charge.

Joan C. Paré
Sept. 8, 1938 -- Jan. 10, 2003
Port Angeles native Joan C. Paré died in Orofino, Idaho, at age 64.
She was born in Port Angeles to Celly and Elsie (Smith) Hopkins, and graduated from Port Angeles High School in 1956.
She worked for airlines, then joined the Peace Corps, serving in Ecuador in 1962-64. She married Maurice R. Paré in Ibarra, Ecuador, on May 25, 1963.
She received bachelor's and master's degrees in social work from Eastern Washington University. She worked for the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare.
Survivors include her husband, in Orofino; sons Shawn of Bothell and Tom of Concord, N.C.; a daughter, Michele Magera of Selah; brothers Paul Hopkins and Dick Hopkins, both of Port Angeles; and three grandchildren.
Services: Saturday, Jan. 18, 11 a.m. memorial service at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel, Orofino, Idaho, with the Rev. Clarence Howard officiating.

Mary Cathrine Seabright
Oct. 8, 1929 -- Jan. 10, 2003
Sequim resident Mary Cathrine Seabright died at home of cardiomyopathy. She was 73.
She was born in San Diego to Thomas J. and Mabel Evelyn (Munshower) Roche.
She graduated from St. Mary's High School in Colorado Springs, Colo., in 1947, and received a scholarship from Senten School of Nursing. After graduation from Senten she received a full scholarship to gain her bachelor of science nursing degree in Denver.
Mrs. Seabright was married and traveled with her husband in circuses before divorcing.
She worked as a registered nurse for more than 37 years in Dallas and as a post-operative nurse in Colorado.
She moved to Sequim four years ago to live with her daughter and son-in-law and their children.
Mrs. Seabright belonged to St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Sequim.
Survivors include daughters Molly Daker of Sequim and Sally Seabright of Colorado Springs; brothers Joseph Thomas Roche of Denver and John Michael Roche of Matheson, Colo.; sister Teresa Pettis of Spokane; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by sister Elizabeth Ann Roche.
Services: Saturday, Jan. 18, 10:30 a.m. Mass in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 121 E. Maple St., Sequim. The Rev. Thomas W. Beattie will officiate. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Arthur Raymond Albright
April 6, 1917 -- Jan. 12, 2003
Port Angeles resident Arthur Raymond Albright died of heart and kidney failure at age 85.
He was born in Port Angeles to Ray and Louise (Ahlvers) Albright.
Mr. Albright served 25 years in the Navy, with duty in both World War II and the Korean War before being discharged as a chief radioman.
He married Sarah ``Sally" Long in Port Angeles on Aug. 8, 1974.
Mr. Albright was a truck driver-rigger in heavy construction and logging, and was also employed by the Port Angeles Parks Department before retiring.
For many years, he flew as a pilot in the Civil Air Patrol, and was a member of the Aircraft Owner's and Pilot's Association and life member of Elks Naval Lodge.
He was active in the Masonic community, where he was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Royal Arch Masons, Crescent Council, Order of Eastern Star, Past Royal Patron of Order of Amaranth, Scottish Rite of Bremerton, Nile Temple Shriners of Seattle and Olympic Peninsula Shrine Club.
Survivors include his wife, daughter Lorraine Anderson and sister Anna Newell, all of Port Angeles; daughter Nikki Traverso of Seattle; sons Ray Albright of Whidbey Island and Lonnie Albright of Seattle; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services: None. Olympic Cremation Association, Port Angeles, is in charge.
Doris O. Bruner-Buckardt
May 30, 1915 -- Jan. 10, 2003
Sequim resident Doris O. Bruner-Buckardt died of congestive heart failure at age 87.
She was born to Newton and Charlotte (Moore) Mills in Niagra, N.D.
For many years, she was a switchboard operator at the Bon Marché department store in Seattle.
Her hobbies included painting and dancing. She was a member of Cards for Cardiacs in Sequim.
She married Ralph Bruner in First Methodist Church, Seattle, on Nov. 9, 1946. He died in 1964.
She married Paul Buckardt on Jan. 24, 1970, at St. Bernadette's, also in Seattle. He died in 1996.
Mrs. Bruner-Buckardt is survived by stepdaughters Kirstine Bennett of Sequim and Barbara Horne of Falls Church, Va.; brothers Edgar Mills of Sequim and Frank Mills of Minnesota; and sisters Ann Davis of Seattle and Ellen Hettinger of North Aurora, Ill.
She was preceded in death by brothers Elbert, Roy, Cliff and Norman Mills; and sisters Thelma Coulthorpe and Audrey.
Services: Thursday, Jan. 16, at 1:30 p.m., funeral in Forest Lawn Funeral Chapel, 6701 30th Ave SW, Seattle; Monday, Feb. 3, at 8:30 a.m., memorial Mass in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 121 E. Maple St., Sequim.

Russell James Christensen
July 29, 1923 -- Jan. 13, 2003
Sequim resident Russell James Christensen died at age 79.
He was born in Winlock to Hans and Martha Marie (Danielsen) Christensen.
He served in the Air Force for 24 years before retiring Sept. 30, 1965.
Mr. Christensen, who was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, was a fighter pilot who flew propeller and jet aircraft, his favorite being the P-38 Lightning.
As a civilian, he worked for Old National Bank of Spokane, which later became US Bank. He lived in Spokane for 30 years before moving to Sequim in 2000.
He was a member of Daedalians, the national fraternity of military pilots.
Mr. Christensen married Cathryn Mancuso in Clovis, N.M., on July 29, 1956. She died April 17, 2001.
Survivors include son Russell Christensen II of Duvall; daughter Karen Sundahl of Tumwater; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
When a child, he was preceded in death by brother Arnold Christensen.
