Ernest W. `Bill' Booth
July 20, 1925 -- Jan. 4, 2003
Brinnon resident Ernest W. ``Bill" Booth died of cancer in Olympia at age 77.
He was born in Shelton to Ernest William and Eleanor J. (Shorter) Booth.
Mr. Booth served in the Pacific Theater with the Navy during World War II.
He married Jacque J. Hall in 1974.
Mr. Booth was a logger and deputy sheriff in Mason and Jefferson counties for more than 20 years. He also operated Settlers Real Estate.
He was a past master and secretary of Quilcene/ Jefferson Masonic Lodge.
Family gatherings, traveling and enjoying the outdoors were among his favorite activities.
Mr. Booth is survived by his wife; son and daughter-in-law Ted L. and Linda Booth of Shelton; daughters JoAnn Kazlauskas of Oak Lawn, Ill., and Carol Gustafson of Shelton; daughter and son-in-law Billie and Mike Frye of Shelton; brother and sister-in-law George and Marcia Booth of Shelton; sister Eleanor Lortz of St. James, Mich.; 16 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by sister Georgena Howe.
Services: Saturday, Jan. 11, at 1 p.m., memorial in Masonic Lodge, 63 Herbert St., Quilcene. Miller-Woodlawn, Bremerton, is in charge of arrangements.
Mayobeth Hiserote-Peterson
Aug. 28, 1923 -- Dec. 21, 2002
Former Port Angeles resident Mayobeth ``Bing" Hiserote-Peterson died of bone cancer in Southwest Washington Hospital, Vancouver, Wash., at age 79.
She was born to Earl and Thelma G. (Cox) Fort in Independence, Ore.
Mrs. Hiserote-Peterson lived in Port Angeles in 1960s, at which time she was a doctor's receptionist and active in real estate.
Her marriage to Ralph Hiserote ended with his death in 1989; and her 1994 marriage to Clifford J. Peterson ended with his death in 1996.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law Sandra and Jim Larson of Vancouver, Wash., and Sue and Ben Perdue of Ephrata; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services: Saturday, Jan. 18, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., remembrance at the home of Ben and Sue Perdue, 2498 Road 11.7 NW, Ephrata, WA 99823. Vancouver Funeral Chapel, Vancouver, was in charge.
John Perry Nichols
April 4, 1924 -- Dec. 22, 2002
Port Angeles resident John Perry Nichols died in Gig Harbor at age 78.
He was born to Perry and Alice (Snyder) Nichols in Milwaukee.
An Army veteran, he was a trapper in Montana and on the Olympic Peninsula.
Mr. Nichols was a member of the National Rifle Association and a marksman who enjoyed bullet casting, reloading and deer hunting. He did exhibition pistol shooting at the Seattle World's Fair in 1962.
He is survived by close friend Paul Patrick of Pasco and cousins Betty Chore and Shirley Kann.
Services: Friday, Jan. 10, at 2 p.m., graveside in Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road, Port Angeles. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Harry Junior Thomas
Nov. 2, 1929 -- Dec. 20, 2002
Port Angeles resident Harry Junior Thomas died of ventricular fibrillation at age 73.
He was born in Hoquiam to Harry A. and Bessie L. (Smoot) Thomas.
He came to Port Angeles in 1979 and worked for Diversified Resource Center's New Broom Janitorial Service for 17 years before retiring at age 65.
Because Mr. Thomas missed working, he returned to New Broom at age 70, but retired again at age 72 because of health problems.
He is survived by brother Nolan Thomas of Seattle.
Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by brother Warren Thomas.
Services: Saturday, Jan. 11, at 2 p.m., memorial in St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 132 E. 13th St., Port Angeles. The Rev. Philip Ritter will officiate. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.
Bernadine J. Voss
Oct. 9, 1947 -- Jan. 3, 2003
Sequim resident Bernadine J. ``Bernie" Voss died in Olympic Memorial Hospital, Port Angeles, of multi-organ failure at age 55.
She was the daughter of Herbert and Hilda (Vrahnos) Wetrich and made her home in Auburn until 1986, after which she lived in Sequim.
Survivors include her companion, Herb Tyson, of Sequim; sons Matthew Linder and Tim Tyson; daughters Shellie Gillis, Marlene Fisher, Suzanne Voss, Teri Gage, Lisa Appeal, Diane Bereiter and Rose Knutson; mother Hilda Percival; her father; brother Conrad Wetrich; sister Valerie Wren; 34 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services: Today, Jan. 8, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., viewing at Sequim Valley Chapel, 108 W. Alder St.; followed Friday, Jan. 10, at 1 p.m., by a service in Hill Funeral Home, 217 E. Pioneer Ave., Puyallup. Procession to Sumner City Cemetery, 12324 Valley Ave. E., Puyallup, then a reception in the fellowship hall of Seventh Day Adventist Church, Puyallup.
Keith Warren Achtenberg
March 3, 1958 -- Jan. 4, 2003
Keith Warren Achtenberg, 44, of Brinnon died in Brinnon.
He was born in Renton to Rudolph Roy and Fern Violet (Hintz) Achtenberg. He graduated from Issaquah High School in 1976.
Mr. Achtenberg enjoyed riding Harley-Davidson motorcycles and was a member of the Elks Lodge in Port Townsend and the Lutheran Church in Renton.
His 1981 marriage to Melissa Johnston ended in divorce.
Mr. Achtenberg married Ilene Ackerman in Quilcene Presbyterian Church on July 4, 2002.
In addition to his wife, who lives in Quilcene, Mr. Achtenberg's survivors include stepson Alex Monroe of Quilcene; stepdaughters Stephanie Monroe of Tukwila and Ashley Monroe of Quilcene; and mother of Brinnon.
He was preceded in death by his father and brother, Rick.
Services: Wednesday, Jan. 8, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., visitation in Kosec Funeral Home, 1615 Parkside Drive, Port Townsend, where the funeral will follow on Thursday, Jan. 9, at 11 a.m. The Revs. Becky Anderson and Bill Reid will officiate. Burial will be in New Leipzig, N.D.
Lydell O. Clevenger
March 14, 1932 -- Dec. 31, 2002
Former North Olympic Peninsula resident Lydell O. Clevenger died at home in Republic. He was 70.
He was born in Audubon, Minn., to Owen G. and Irene (Peterson) Clevenger, and attended schools in Minnesota and Illinois before enlisting in the Air Force in 1950.
After his military service, Mr. Clevenger was an aircraft mechanic for Boeing Co.
He then moved to the Peninsula, living at Lake Leland while he was in the logging industry for 30 years.
In 1966, he married Ingrid Klinger in Brinnon; they moved to Detroit Lakes, Minn., in 1987, and then to Republic in 1988.
In addition to his wife, who survives him in Republic, Mr. Clevenger is survived by his son Thor Clevenger in Port Angeles; mother Irene Solberg in Colville; and one grandson.
Services: At his request, none. Bergh Funeral Service of Republic was in charge of cremation.
Verna Satterlee Einarsen
Sept. 17, 1913 -- Dec. 28, 2002
Port Townsend resident Verna Satterlee Einarsen died in Martha and Mary Nursing Home, Poulsbo, at age 89.
She was born in Tacoma to Milton and Jesse (Doyle) Satterlee, and completed training at Swedish Hospital School for Nurses in Seattle.
She married Arthur S. Einarsen in Seattle on Oct. 4, 1935.
Mrs. Einarsen taught Red Cross home nursing while a homemaker in Corvallis, Ore.
After moving to Port Townsend, she was curriculum materials librarian for Jefferson County schools.
Her favorite pastimes included genealogy and eggery as well as beachcombing, traveling, walking, gardening and flower arranging.
Mrs. Einarsen, who was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, also served on the board of the Port Townsend Library and belonged to the Jefferson County Historical Society and Trinity United Methodist Church.
Survivors include sons A. Forester Einarsen of Stafford, Va., and Paul Einarsen of Westport, Conn.; daughter Caroleena Einarsen of Port Townsend; sister Lucile Borrow of Seattle; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Her husband died Dec. 20, 1965.
Services: Saturday, Jan. 18 at 1 p.m., inurnment in Anderson Cemetery, Stanwood; Sunday, Jan. 19, at 2 p.m., memorial in Trinity United Methodist Church, 609 Taylor St., Port Townsend. Cremation was by Miller Woodlawn Funeral Home, Bremerton. Gilbertson Funeral Home, Stanwood, was in charge of arrangements.

Hazel Brillhart Gellatly
Sept. 17, 1910 -- Jan. 5, 2003
Sequim resident Hazel Brillhart Gellatly died in Port Angeles at age 92.
She was born in Mound Valley, Kan., to Charles and Sylvia (Haynes) Brillhart.
She married Robert W. Gellatly in Portland, Ore., on Dec. 9, 1941.
Mrs. Gellatly, a dog enthusiast who made her home in Port Angeles and Sequim for the past 14 years, was active in raising and showing Belgian schiperkes for many years. She also enjoyed gardening and sewing.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Gellatly's survivors include brother Darrel Brillhart of Toronto, Kan.; and sister Lucille Wenko of Kingston.
She was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
Services: Friday, Jan. 10, from noon until 12:30 p.m., visitation in Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, 60 Monroe Road, Port Angeles, immediately preceding the 1 p.m. funeral; a reception will follow in the funeral home. Private burial will be at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent.
Josephine K. Goldsmith
Jan. 10, 1906 -- Jan. 2, 2003
Josephine K. Goldsmith died in Sequim eight days before her 97th birthday.
She was born in Alvord, Iowa, to Theodore and Anna (Schmit) Goldschmit.
Miss Goldsmith graduated from the University of Northern Iowa, and did postgraduate studies at University of California, Los Angeles, and the Claremont Colleges in California.
Miss Goldsmith pursued a career in education and was a member of many professional organizations.
After first teaching in Clarion, Iowa, she advanced to administration and served as a school principal, eventually retiring in Ontario, Calif.
Miss Goldsmith enjoyed relationships with extended family and friends: former students, many now grandparents, who kept in touch with her by phone at every class reunion.
For the past 20 years in Sequim, at least a dozen former students would visit her.
Miss Goldsmith was an avid stamp collector, a benefactor to many charities, and a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Sequim.
In addition to her sister, Lucille M. Springer, Miss Goldsmith's survivors are many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.
Services: Monday, Jan. 13, at 10:30 a.m., funeral in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 121 E. Maple St., Sequim. The Rev. Thomas Beattie will preside. A reception will follow in the church hall. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Culver City, Calif. Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Helen G. Johnson
July 10, 1918 -- Jan. 1, 2003
Helen G. Johnson died in her Port Townsend residence at age 84.
She was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, to George Andrew and Ada (Reeves) Young, but spent most of her life in Santa Monica, Calif.
She married Francis L. ``Roy" Johnson in Santa Monica on Nov. 18, 1939.
Mrs. Johnson retired to an island in British Columbia for four years, then moved to Northern California, where she and her husband lived before moving to Port Townsend in September 2001.
During her 55 years of marriage, Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker with a strong interest in painting, which she taught in classes at the YMCA and at 4-H, as well as in an arts and crafts store she and her husband owned for 20 years.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by daughter Margaret Schumacher, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1995.
Services: Memorial tentative scheduled for April 27. Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge.
Nicholas Emmert Rogers
Aug. 15, 1942 -- Jan. 2, 2003
Former Port Angeles resident Nicholas Emmert Rogers died of complications from diabetes in Bremerton at age 60.
Born in Port Angeles, the son of Verna A. (Breitenbach) Emmert Rogers, he graduated from Port Angeles High School in 1961 before enlisting in the Navy.
While on 20 years active duty, Mr. Rogers was a hospital corpsman serving with the Pacific Fleet in Vietnam and Antarctica.
Following military retirement in 1981, he spent two years with the Merchant Marine, then worked in sales in Bremerton.
He married Carole Applegate at Reno, Nev., in June 1982.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Rogers' survivors include stepdaughters Michelle Shoemaker of Seattle and Bernadine Flores of Arizona; mother of Port Angeles; brother Steve Rogers of South Prairie; sisters Kris Ferris of Des Moines and Jeanne Klockers of Plano, Texas; and two grandchildren.
His birth father, Ken Emmert, died in 1948; his mother's second husband and his adoptive father, Myron Rogers, died in 1996.
Services: Private. Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home, Bremerton, is in charge.
