JEAN B. SCOTT
1906-2002
Beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother went to be with her late husband, Myron ``Scotty," on Nov. 26, 2002.
She is survived by daughter Lynda Ross, grandsons Jim and Lorne Rooth and 10 great-grandchildren, all of Tacoma.
She was a member of the Port Angeles chapter of PEO and a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. She will truly be missed by all.
A memorial will be held Dec.19, 2002, at 1 p.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Port Angeles. All donations should be made to St. Andrew's.

Enid Elizabeth Byers
Feb. 17, 1910 -- Dec. 3, 2002
Sequim resident Enid Elizabeth Byers died in Port Angeles of pneumonia at age 92.
Born in Sequim to Elda Evelyth and Sarah Mildred (Borst) Lewis, she grew up in Sequim and received her schooling there and in Washington Harbor.
She married Carlos Ray Davis on Sept. 13, 1926, in Port Townsend, and they lived in Jefferson County during their early married life. He died in 1959.
Mrs. Byers moved to Port Angeles and then, in 1976, back to Sequim.
In 1966, she married Fay Elwess; he died in 1974.
She married Harold Byers in 1976; he died in 1989.
Mrs. Byers worked at Olympic Laundry & Cleaners, Deluxe Cleaners and Maybee's Village Cleaners.
She was a member of Women of the Moose and was a baseball fan who especially cheered for the Seattle Mariners.
Mrs. Byers enjoyed, birding, reading and crocheting -- making numerous lap robes for local nursing homes as well as afghans for family and friends.
Mrs. Byers is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Merle and Beverly Davis of Olympia; daughter and son-in-law Betty and Richard Heilman of Agnew; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brother Ernest Lewis of Sequim and sisters Evelyn Morello and Jean Morello, both of Port Townsend.
Services: Monday, Dec. 9, at 11 a.m., graveside service in Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road, Port Angeles. A reception will follow at Agnew Helpful Neighbors Club, 1241 N. Barr Road, Port Angeles. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Virginia M. Harrington
July 26, 1913 -- Dec. 4, 2002
Virginia M. Harrington died in her Sequim home at age 89.
She was born in Columbia Falls, Mont., to Matthius and Martha Emily (Schuppert) Palmer.
She received her bachelor's degree in education from the University of Wisconsin.
On Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, 1937, she married Edward Stephen Harrington at Eau Claire, Wis. He died in June 1994.
The Harringtons operated a fishing resort in northwestern Ontario for seven years, then helped operate a grocery store and lounge in Oregon.
Mrs. Harrington taught elementary school in British Columbia, Arkansas, California and Wisconsin.
In 1980, the Harringtons moved from Arizona to Sequim, where she became a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
Her favorite pastimes included reading, hiking, hunting and fishing.
Mrs. Harrington is survived by daughter Erin Bulman of Julian, Calif.; brother Edward N. Palmer; and sister Betty Anne Rob of Thunder Bay, Ontario.
Services: Monday, Dec. 9, at 8:30 a.m., funeral Mass in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 121 E. Maple St., Sequim. The Rev. Thomas W. Beattie will preside. Inurnment in Dungeness Cemetery will be at a later date. Olympic Cremation Association, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Quma Ann Rudolph Ogden
June 8, 1924 -- Dec. 3, 2002
Lifelong Port Angeles resident Quma Ann Rudolph Ogden died in Port Angeles Care Center at age 78.
The daughter of Raymond G. and Hazel K. (Kidd) Miller graduated from Port Angeles High School in 1943.
She worked as a nanny in Portland, Ore., then returned to Port Angeles.
She enjoyed writing and birding as well as being a member of Peninsula Golf Club, American Legion, PTA and American Heart Association.
Mrs. Ogden was preceded in death by her husbands, Kenneth Rudolph and Landis Ogden.
She is survived by son David Musielak of Joyce; daughters J. Marlouis Smith of Port Angeles and Shannon Rudolph of Kona, Hawaii; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A son, Lamar Rudolph, and a sister, Marny Miller Musielak, preceded her in death.
Services: At her request, none. Cremains will be dispersed in Port Angeles, Joyce and Kona, Hawaii. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Ralph B. Baker
Nov. 4, 1923 -- Dec. 6, 2002
Ralph B. Baker died of cancer in Sequim at age 79.
Mr. Baker was born to Richard and Charlotte (Blowers) Baker in New York.
He married Doris E. Baker in Oklahoma in 1944. She died in 1999 in Sequim.
Mr. Baker was a professional artist for many years in California, and retired to the Sequim area in 1984.
Survivors include son Rick Baker of Toluca Lake, Calif., and two grandchildren.
Services: No services. There was cremation.

Gregory Lee Emerick
Aug. 29, 1948 -- Dec. 6, 2002
Gregory Lee Emerick died in Port Angeles at age 54.
Mr. Emerick was born in Hollywood, Calif., to C. Edward and Gladys (Reed) Emerick.
He married Gloria Wallace on Nov. 4, 1967, in Van Nuys, Calif.
Mr. Emerick worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 38 years in California and Washington, serving as the Sequim postmaster since 1993.
In Sequim he was active on the Irrigation Festival Committee, New Dungeness Lighthouse Society and North Olympic Peninsula Railroad Club. He was an avid stamp and postal memorabilia collector, railroad enthusiast and a devoted family man.
Mr. Emerick was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife of Sequim; son Cam Emerick of Sequim; daughter Shanon Cimbura and her husband Brian of North Carolina; brothers Ed and Ralph Emerick, both of California; sisters Cindy Osgood and Nanette Toland, both of California; and three grandchildren.
Services: Private memorial service. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge.
Edith Johanna Gardner
Aug. 6, 1914 -- Dec. 3, 2002
Sequim resident Edith Johanna Gardner died in Olympic Care and Rehabilitation Center from a stroke. She was 88.
Born in Baudette, Minn., to Fred and Anne Lore, she grew up in Minnesota.
She married Charles L. Young July 18, 1937. He died in February 1970.
She married Gilbert Gardner In November 1981. He died in September 1991.
Mrs. Gardner was an avid reader and skilled craftswoman, who made many teddy bears and toy bunnies for the Police Department in Issaquah, where she lived before coming to the Peninsula.
She is survived by sons Charles Young of Mill Creek, Fred Young of Okanogan and Michael Young of Libby, Mont.; daughters Shirley Mullikin of Sequim, Carol Warman of Everett, Linda Hill of Port Angeles, Eleanore Boswell of Alyn, Susan Gerke of Fall City and Sallie Linnertz of Minot, N.D.; sister Barbara Hocking of Hibbing, Minn.; 24 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
Services: Saturday, Dec. 7, memorial in Our Savior Lutheran Church, Issaquah. Evergreen-Washelli Funeral Home, Seattle, was in charge of arrangements.

Chinh Thi Vu
Sept. 15, 1915 -- Dec. 5, 2002
Chinh Thi Vu died in Forks Community Hospital at age 87.
She was born in Vietnam to Nguyen Thi Mam.
He was employed in sales.
Survivors include sons Nguyen Van Van and Nguyen Van Tuat; daughters Nguyen Thi Thu, Nguyen Thi Thin, and Nguyen Thi Mui; and 17 grandchildren.
Services: Monday, Dec. 9 at 1 p.m., graveside service at Forks Cemetery with the Rev. Dennis Romance officiating. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.
Myrtle Erickson
May 9, 1917 -- Nov. 26, 2002
Myrtle Erickson of Port Townsend died at Martha & Mary Health Center in Poulsbo. She was 85.
Services: Chapel service Sunday, Dec. 1, at 11 a.m. at Kosec Funeral Home, 1615 Parkside Drive, Port Townsend. Pastor Jerry Benjamin will officiate.
Prosper Ostrowski
Former Port Angeles Mayor Prosper Ostrowski dies in Seattle
Former Port Angeles Mayor Prosper Ostrowski, who died Tuesday, is being remembered by those who worked with him as a ``true gentlemen" who was ``friendly to everyone."
Family members said Ostrowski, 77, died at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle from complications of chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
Ostrowski served on the Port Angeles City Council from November 1989 to December 1997. He was mayor during his last two years on the council.
Ostrowski was also a member of the City Council in Aberdeen from 1962 to 1976, including one year as council president.
``He was a true gentlemen and a pleasure to work with," said Mayor Glenn Wiggins on Wednesday.
``He was a great ambassador for the area, and people all over the state knew Prosper."
Larry Doyle, a former mayor who served on the city council with Ostrowski, remembers the former mayor as very outgoing.
``He would introduce himself to people and talk about just about anything," Doyle said. ``He was good-natured and friendly to everyone."
Doyle said Ostrowski was ``extremely respected" as a forester and forestry consultant.
50-year friendship
Longtime friend Jack Hendrickson said he knew Ostrowski for more than 50 years.
``One thing I can say about him is he was a guy that was friendly to everyone, and he sincerely wanted to know everything he could about everyone he met," Hendrickson said.
Hendrickson and Ostrowski attended the University of Washington together in the 1950s.
``He graduated with a forestry degree in 1951, and I got mine in 1952," he said. ``We often worked in the same area and remained friends throughout the years."
Councilman Orville Campbell described Ostrowski as a warm person with a wonderful sense of humor.
``He was very approachable and didn't have an enemy in the world," Campbell said.
Campbell credited Ostrowski with establishing a relationship that is still ongoing between Port Angeles and the mayor and city of Victoria.
``Prosper was an excellent leader and was able to really pull the council together," he said.
Services Monday
Ostrowski was a longtime member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church, where he served on the parish board. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for more than 50 years.
A funeral mass will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Queen of Angels Church, with a reception following at the Parish Hall.
Interment will take place at a family plot at Calvary Cemetery in Seattle under the direction of Hoffner, Fisher and Harvey Funeral Directors.

Grew up on farm
Ostrowski is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sheila; four children: John of Seattle; Matthew of Port Angeles; Annya of Boise, Idaho; and Nicole of San Francisco; and a brother, Alfred Ostrowski, and sister, Emily Levendoski, both of Hatley, Wis.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Victor, Hubert, Sylvester, Chester and Myron and sisters Irene Balthazor and Theresa Turnski.
Ostrowski was born March 5, 1925 in Hatley, Wis., to Peter and Agnes Ostrowski and was the seventh of 10 children.
He grew up on a farm and graduated from high school in Birnamwood, Wis.
He moved to Washington state in 1945 and spent summers working for the U.S. Forest Service in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.
He graduated from the College of Forestry at the University of Washington in 1951.
He married his wife, the former Sheila Harvey, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Seattle on June 19, 1954.
Forest industries
Ostrowski served in the U.S. Army with the 1st Cavalry Division between 1946 and 1948 and spent 15 months of occupation duty in Tokyo.
He moved to Grays Harbor County in 1951 and was employed by private forest industries for more than 50 years.
He worked for Rayonier, Inc. as inventory forester, West Tacoma Newsprint Co., Boise Cascade Corp. as operations forester and Grays Harbor Hardwood Co. in log procurement.
The family moved to Port Angeles in 1976, and Ostrowski worked for Milwaukee Land Co. as an area forester and as its last general manager, managing a 35,000-acre tree farm.
After Milwaukee Land Co., he worked as a independent forestry consultant for more than 12 years.
He was a member of the Society of American Foresters, serving as chapter chairman one year and two years as state chairman of the Puget Sound Section; trustee of the Washington Forest Protection Association; trustee of the Keep Washington Green Association; House of Section Delegate to the National Society of America Foresters; College of Forest Resources Alumni, University of Washington.
Many boards
He also served on state and local boards and commissions, including the Disability Board; Firemen's Pension Board; Volunteer Firemen's Board; Lauridsen Trust Board; Peninsula Development; Clallam Transit System Authority Board, including one year as chairman; Peninsula Regional Transportation Planning Organization, including one year as chairman; and the Association of Washington Cities Board of Trustees.
He had also been an active member of the board of directors of the Hospice of Clallam County serving two years as president; was a member and past president of the Juan de Fuca Kiwanis Club and was a member of the Port Angeles Chamber of Commerce and the Aberdeen Rotary Club.
He also served as district chairman of the Grays Harbor Boy Scouts of America.
