Lester J. Lancaster: Former longtime county assessor remembered

SEQUIM -- The family of longtime resident and former Clallam County Assessor Lester J. Lancaster, who died Sept. 20, 2002, in his home at age 85, remembers his generosity and his love for gardening and his grandchildren.

``He was a giver,'' his wife Betty Lancaster said Tuesday. ``It was impossible to keep tools around the house.''

Mrs. Lancaster, a court reporter while Lancaster was county assessor, remembers a time when they were leaving the courthouse together.

``It was about closing time, and as we walked by this man, he said, `darn it.' And Les asked him what was the matter,'' Mrs. Lancaster recalled. ``He said he needed to get his car license but had forgotten his wallet, so Les asked `how much do you need?' and told him he could pay him back later.''

Lancaster was born Dec. 2, 1916, in Reno County, Kan., the eldest of six children and son of Arthur and Annie Gertrude (Schuler) Lancaster.

In addition to being raised on his parents' farm, he was a dairy farmer himself for most of his life.

Lancaster married Joan Weber in 1942 in Kansas.

In 1948, the Lancasters moved to Sequim, where they managed the dairy at Graymarsh Farm.

Lancaster's son, Tim, said his father was proud of dairy cows that set records for milk and butterfat production.

He expanded the farm to include berries in 1964.

It was during his time as a farmer that Tim said he saw his father's generosity in action when Lancaster loaded up a truck with hay to deliver to a farm in Carlsborg where cattle had been stranded by snow.

``The road was slippery and when he went to stop, the truck slammed into the train,'' Tim said. ``But he still delivered that load of hay.''

Appointed assessor

After turning the dairy over to his son, Jay, Lancaster accepted appointment as Clallam County assessor in 1973.

He served as assessor until 1984 when he returned to farming.

Although he enjoyed serving the public as assessor, his family recalls how difficult campaigning was for him.

``He would sweat bullets before the times he had to speak in public,'' Mrs. Lancaster said.

Tim said taping a commercial at KONP radio station had to be recorded several times until it was perfected.

``But a few years later, hearing him at a public forum, I was surprised how much he'd improved over time,'' Tim said.

In addition to serving as assessor, Lancaster was on the Sequim School Board and the county's Board of Equalization.

Although retired from farming, Lancaster kept a garden with 15 to 20 roses and a vegetable garden.

He also enjoyed attending livestock shows at fairs around the state.

``He never got tired of them,'' Mrs. Lancaster said. ``In fact, he was mad because I wouldn't take him to the Puyallup Fair, even though he was so weak he couldn't open an envelope.''

Surviving family members

In January 1975, his wife, Joan, died.

On Aug. 1, 1976, he married Betty Woodward Kemp, a Superior Court reporter.

He was preceded in death by his sister Peggy Wichser.
